Śikṣā Vallī, Anuvāka 3

1.3.1 Upanishadic seer

saha nau yaśaḥ | saha nau brahmavarcasam | athātaḥ saṃhitāyā upaniṣadaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ | pañcasvadhikaraṇeṣu | adhilokamadhijyautiṣamadhividyamadhiprajamadhyātmam | tā mahāsaṃhitāyā ityācakṣate | athādhilokam | pṛthivī pūrvarūpam | dyauruttararūpam | ākāśaḥ sandhiḥ ||

May glory be ours together; may the radiance of sacred knowledge be ours together. Now we will explain the hidden teaching of joining, under five heads: concerning the worlds, the lights, knowledge, offspring, and the self. These they call the great joinings. First, concerning the worlds: earth is the first form, heaven the second form, space the meeting-place,

Meaning today and context

Teacher and student pray for success together, not one at the other's cost. The meditation that follows trains the eye to see how separate things are joined into a whole.

Taittirīya 1.3.1 opens with a joint prayer of teacher and student, then begins a meditation on 'joining' (saṃhitā) in five spheres, starting with the worlds.

1.3.2 Upanishadic seer

vāyuḥ sandhānam | ityadhilokam | athādhijautiṣam | agniḥ pūrvarūpam | āditya uttararūpam | āpaḥ sandhiḥ | vaidyutaḥ sandhānam | ityadhijyautiṣam | athādhividyam | ācāryaḥ pūrvarūpam ||

wind the link. So much concerning the worlds. Now concerning the lights: fire is the first form, the sun the second form, the waters the meeting-place, lightning the link. So much concerning the lights. Now concerning knowledge: the teacher is the first form,

Meaning today and context

The pattern repeats in every sphere: two sides, a place where they meet, and something that binds them. It is a way of seeing relationship rather than isolated parts.

Taittirīya 1.3.2 continues the meditation on joining: the worlds, then the lights, and begins the sphere of knowledge.

1.3.3 Upanishadic seer

antevāsyuttararūpam | vidyā sandhiḥ | pravacanaṃ sandhānam | ityadhividyam | athādhiprajam | mātā pūrvarūpam | pitottararūpam | prajā sandhiḥ | prajananaṃ sandhānam | ityadhiprajam ||

the student the second form, knowledge the meeting-place, teaching the link. So much concerning knowledge. Now concerning offspring: the mother is the first form, the father the second form, the child the meeting-place, begetting the link. So much concerning offspring.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge is what a teacher and student meet in, and teaching is what binds them. Real learning lives in that relationship, not only in books.

Taittirīya 1.3.3: in the sphere of knowledge the teacher and the student are joined by knowledge and linked by teaching; in the sphere of offspring, mother and father are joined by the child.

1.3.4 Upanishadic seer

athādhyātmam | adharā hanuḥ pūrvarūpam | uttarā hanuruttara rūpam | vāksandhiḥ | jihvāsandhānam | ityadhyātmam | itīmā mahāsaṃhitāḥ | ya evametā mahāsaṃhitā vyākhyātā veda | sandhīyate prajayā paśubhiḥ | brahmavarcasenānnādyena suvargyeṇa lokena ||

Now concerning the self: the lower jaw is the first form, the upper jaw the second form, speech the meeting-place, the tongue the link. So much concerning the self. These are the great joinings. Whoever knows these great joinings as they have been explained is joined with offspring, with cattle, with the radiance of sacred knowledge, with food to eat, and with the heavenly world.

Meaning today and context

Even speech is seen as a meeting of parts held together by the tongue. The verse promises a full life to one who sees these connections; it is the old Vedic picture of a blessed householder.

Taittirīya 1.3.4 completes the meditation on joining with the body (speech between the jaws) and states the fruit for one who knows it.
