These real desires are covered over by the unreal. Though they are real, the unreal is their covering. That is why, when any of one's people departs from here, one does not get to see them here again.
Mourning is natural and should be given its time. This verse offers a way of understanding loss, not a reason to deny grief. If grief feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

The pain of losing someone feels final. The Upanishad says the separation belongs to the surface of things, to what covers the real; the bond itself is not unreal.
Chandogya 8.3.1: the teacher explains why we do not experience these real desires: they are covered over by the unreal, so that we cannot even see our departed loved ones.

And those of his people who are alive here, and those who have departed, and whatever else he wishes for and does not get: all of that he finds by going there, for there are these real desires of his, covered by the unreal. Just as people who do not know the ground might walk again and again over a hidden store of gold and never find it, so all these creatures go day after day into this world of Brahman and do not find it, for they are carried off course by the unreal.

What we search for outside is already within us, as close as gold under our feet. We pass over it every day, in sleep and in quiet moments, because our attention is pulled elsewhere.
Chandogya 8.3.2: the teacher says all we long for, the living and the departed, is found within, and gives the image of people walking over buried gold without finding it.
This Self is in the heart. Its explanation is this: 'hṛdy ayam', 'this is in the heart'; that is why it is called hṛdayam, the heart. One who knows this goes day after day to the heavenly world.

The very word 'heart' is read as a reminder that the Self lives within. Each day, in sleep and in stillness, one who understands this touches that inner home.
Chandogya 8.3.3: the teacher explains the word 'heart' (hṛdayam) as 'this is in the heart' (hṛdy ayam).
Now this serene one, rising up from this body and reaching the highest light, appears in its own true form. 'That is the Self,' he said. 'That is the immortal, the fearless; that is Brahman.' And the name of this Brahman is 'the Real' (satyam).

Beneath the body's pressures and the mind's noise there is a serene self, and it is our true form. Its nature is fearlessness: to touch it is to find a steadiness that fear cannot shake.
Chandogya 8.3.4: the teacher describes the serene self that rises from the body, reaches the highest light and appears in its own form; Brahman's name is 'the Real'.
