3.10.1 Upanishadic seer

na kañcana vasatau pratyācakṣīta | tadavratam | tasmādyayā kayā ca vidhayā bahvannaṃ prāpnuyāt | arādhyasmā annamityācakṣate | etadvai mukhato'naṃ rāddham | mukhato'smā annaṃ rādhyate | etadvai madhyato'naṃ rāddham | madhyato'smā annaṃ rādhyate | etadvai antato'nnaṃ rāddham | antato'smā annaṃ rādhyate ||

Turn no one away who comes to your home; that is the vow. Therefore one should gain plenty of food by whatever means; people say [of such a one], 'Food has been made ready for him.' If food is prepared and given in the best way, food comes to him in the best way. If it is given in a middling way, it comes to him in a middling way. If it is given in the lowest way, it comes to him in the lowest way.

'By whatever means' does not permit dishonest or unlawful earning. Hospitality does not mean letting in anyone who puts you or your family at risk; for danger, call 112.

Meaning today and context

Hospitality is a vow, not a favour: whoever comes to your door should be fed. And the spirit in which you give comes back to you; give with respect and generosity, not grudgingly.

Taittiriya 3.10.1: the fourth vow: turn no one away from your home. Hence one should gather plenty of food, and as food is given to a guest, so it returns to the giver.

3.10.2 Upanishadic seer

kṣema iti vāci | yogakṣema iti prāṇāpānayoḥ | karmeti hastayoḥ | gatiriti pādayoḥ | vimuktiriti pāyau | iti mānuṣīḥ samājñāḥ | atha daivīḥ | tṛptiriti vṛṣṭau | balamiti vidyuti ||

[One should meditate on Brahman] as preservation in speech, as gaining and keeping in the in-breath and out-breath, as action in the hands, as movement in the feet, as release in the organ of excretion. These are the human meditations. Now the divine ones: as satisfaction in rain, as strength in lightning,

Meaning today and context

The sacred is not only in temples; it can be seen in ordinary functions of the body and in rain and lightning. Every ability we have, even the humblest, can be received as a gift.

Taittiriya 3.10.2: forms of meditation on Brahman as present in the powers of the body (the 'human' meditations) and in nature (the 'divine' ones).

3.10.3 Upanishadic seer

yaśa iti paśuṣu | jyotiriti nakṣatreṣu | prajātiramṛtamānanda ityupasthe | sarvamityākāśe | tatpratiṣṭhetyupāsīta | pratiṣṭhāvānbhavati | tanmaha ityupāsīta | mahānbhavati | tanmana ityupāsīta | mānavānbhavati ||

as fame in cattle, as light in the stars, as procreation, immortality and joy in the organ of generation, as the All in space. One should meditate on it as foundation; one becomes well-founded. One should meditate on it as greatness; one becomes great. One should meditate on it as mind; one becomes thoughtful.

Meaning today and context

What we hold in mind and revere, we slowly grow into. Choosing to see stability, greatness and thoughtfulness as sacred helps those qualities take root in us.

Taittiriya 3.10.3: the divine meditations continue, then a teaching that whatever quality one meditates on Brahman as, one comes to have.

3.10.4 Upanishadic seer

tannama ityupāsīta | namyante'smai kāmāḥ | tadabrahmetyupāsīta | brahmavānbhavati | tadabrahmaṇaḥ parimara ityupāsīta | paryeṇaṃ mriyante dviṣantaḥ sapatnāḥ | pari ye'priyā bhrātṛvyāḥ | sa yaścāyaṃ puruṣe | yaścāsāvāditye | sa ekaḥ ||

One should meditate on it as homage; desires bow down to him. One should meditate on it as Brahman; one comes to possess Brahman. One should meditate on it as 'the dying-around of Brahman'; around him die the rivals who hate him, and the hostile kinsmen he dislikes. He who is here in the person and he who is there in the sun: he is one.

The line about rivals dying is an old ritual formula. It is never a reason to wish harm on anyone or to act against them; for threats or danger, call 112.

Meaning today and context

Bowing before something greater softens our grip on desire. The line about rivals belongs to an old ritual setting; read today, it says that one who rests in the whole is no longer threatened by those who oppose him.

Taittiriya 3.10.4: more meditations and their fruits, including an old formula against rivals, and the repeated statement that the one in the person and the one in the sun are one.

3.10.5 Upanishadic seer

One who knows this, on departing from this world, having reached this self made of food, this self made of breath, this self made of mind, this self made of understanding, this self made of bliss, roams these worlds eating what he wishes and taking what form he wishes, and sits singing this chant: 'Hā-u! Hā-u! Hā-u!'

'Departing from this world' describes what the knower reaches, not an invitation to think about dying. If you are thinking about death or ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Freedom here is not grim or solemn; it ends in song. When a person knows the whole, the natural response is wonder and joy beyond words.

Taittiriya 3.10.5: the knower, having passed through all five sheaths, moves freely through the worlds and sings a wordless chant of joy.

3.10.6 Upanishadic seer

'I am food, I am food, I am food! I am the eater of food, I am the eater of food, I am the eater of food! I am the one who joins them, I am the one who joins them, I am the one who joins them! I am the first-born of the cosmic order, earlier than the gods, the navel of immortality. Whoever gives me away, he truly has saved me. I, being food, eat the one who eats food. I have overcome the whole world. My light is like the sun's.' One who knows this. Such is the secret teaching.

Meaning today and context

In the end the knower sees no wall between eater and eaten, self and world. One practical line stands out: food that is shared is food that is kept. Giving is how what we have is truly preserved.

Taittiriya 3.10.6, the end of the Upanishad: the liberated one's song, in which he declares himself both food and eater, the first-born of the cosmic order, one with the whole world.
