Chapter 13

13.1 Janaka to Ashtavakra

akiṃcanabhavaṃ svāsthyaṃ kaupīnatve'pi durlabham | tyāgādāne vihāyāsmādahamāse yathāsukham ||

The ease that comes from having nothing is hard to find even for one who wears only a loincloth. So, giving up both renouncing and acquiring, I live at ease.

Not advice to give up one's home, possessions or responsibilities; the verse says outer renunciation is not the point.

Meaning today and context

Owning less does not by itself bring peace; a person can be proud of renouncing. Peace comes when we stop keeping score of what we give up or gain.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: the ease of owning nothing inwardly is rare even for a renunciant in a loincloth.

13.2 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kutrāpi khedaḥ kāyasya, jihvā kutrāpi khidyate | manaḥ kutrāpi tattyaktvā puruṣārthe sthitaḥ sukham ||

Somewhere the body grows weary, somewhere the tongue grows tired, somewhere the mind. Leaving all that, I rest happily in the true goal of life.

Meaning today and context

Every kind of effort, physical, verbal, mental, eventually tires us. There is a rest that does not depend on any of these efforts.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: body, speech and mind each get tired in their own work, so he rests in the true aim instead.

13.3 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kṛtaṃ kimapi naiva syāditi sañcintya tattvataḥ | yadā yatkartumāyāti tatkṛtvāse yathāsukham ||

Reflecting in truth that nothing at all is really done, I do whatever comes to be done, and live at ease.

Meaning today and context

Doing what the moment asks, without the heavy sense of 'I am the great doer', lets us work fully without being crushed by it.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: knowing that nothing is truly done by the Self, he does whatever comes to be done.

13.4 Janaka to Ashtavakra

karmanaiṣkarmyanirbandhabhāvā dehasthayoginaḥ | saṃyogāyogavirahādahamāse yathāsukham ||

Yogis who identify with the body are bound by insisting on action or on non-action. Free of both joining and separating, I live at ease.

Meaning today and context

Rigid rules, 'always act' or 'never act', come from identifying with the body and its doing. Freedom does not need either rule.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: yogis who identify with the body insist on action or on inaction, but he is free of both.

13.5 Janaka to Ashtavakra

arthānarthau na me sthityā gatyā na śayanena vā | tiṣṭhangacchansvapantasmādahamāse yathāsukham ||

Neither gain nor loss comes to me from standing, walking or lying down. So, whether standing, walking or sleeping, I live at ease.

Meaning today and context

Peace that depends on the right posture or the right circumstance is fragile. The peace Janaka describes is present in whatever we happen to be doing.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: standing, walking or lying down bring him neither gain nor loss.

13.6 Janaka to Ashtavakra

svapato nāsti me hāniḥ siddhiryatnavato na vā | nāśollāsau vihāyāsmādahamāse yathāsukham ||

I lose nothing by sleeping, nor do I gain anything by striving. So, leaving aside dejection at loss and elation at gain, I live at ease.

Spoken about the Self, which nothing can add to; it is not advice to stop working, studying or looking after one's responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

What we really are is not increased by effort or reduced by rest. Knowing this can free us from feeling worthless whenever we are not productive.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: he loses nothing by resting and gains nothing by striving, so he has dropped both loss and elation.

13.7 Janaka to Ashtavakra

sukhādirūpā niyamaṃ bhāveṣvālokya bhūriśaḥ | śubhāśubhe vihāyāsmādahamāse yathāsukham ||

Seeing again and again that pleasure and its like never hold steady in anything, I leave aside the pleasant and the unpleasant and live at ease.

Meaning today and context

The same thing that pleases today may hurt tomorrow. Noticing this again and again loosens our grip on chasing some things and fleeing others.

Janaka tells Ashtavakra how he now lives at ease: having seen how unreliable pleasure and pain are in things, he lets go of good and bad.
