Question 5

5.1 Satyakama Shaibya to Pippalada

atha hainaṃ śaibyaḥ satyakāmaḥ papraccha | sa yo ha vai tadbhagavanmanuṣyeṣu prāyaṇāntamoṃkāramabhidhyāyīta | katamaṃ vāva sa tena lokaṃ jayatīti ||

Then Śaibya Satyakāma asked him: "Sir, if someone among men meditates on Om until the end of his life, what world does he win by that?"

Meaning today and context

This is the question of anyone who has kept up a practice for years: where does it lead? The Upanishad takes it seriously.

The fifth question. Śaibya Satyakāma asks about a person who meditates on Om all his life, until death: what world does he win by it?

5.2 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

tasmai sa hovāca | etadvai satyakāma paraṃ cāparaṃ ca brahma yadoṃkāraḥ | tasmādvidvānetenaivāyatanenaikataramanveti ||

He said to him: "Satyakāma, this Om is both the higher and the lower Brahman. Therefore the one who knows, by this support alone, reaches one or the other."

Meditation on Om is a spiritual practice, best learned from a qualified teacher. It is not a medical treatment and does not replace care for physical or mental health.

Meaning today and context

A single sound can be a support for the whole spiritual path, from the simplest prayer to the deepest knowledge. Where it takes us depends on how deeply we understand and practise it.

Pippalāda answers Satyakāma: Om is both the higher and the lower Brahman, so through Om as one's support one reaches either.

5.3 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

sa yadyekamātramabhidhyāyīta | sa tenaiva saṃveditastūrṇameva jagatyāmabhisampadyate | tamṛco manuṣyalokamupanayante | sa tatra tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śraddhayā sampanno mahimānamanubhavati ||

"If he meditates on it as one measure, enlightened by that alone, he soon comes back to the earth. The Ṛg verses lead him to the human world. There, endowed with austerity, chastity and faith, he experiences greatness."

Meaning today and context

Even partial practice is not wasted: it brings one back into a human life rich in discipline and faith. Every sincere beginning counts.

Pippalāda: one who meditates on Om as a single measure (the sound 'a') returns quickly to the human world, led by the Ṛg verses, and there lives a great life of discipline and faith.

5.4 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

atha yadi dvimātreṇa manasi saṃpadyate | so'ntarīkṣaṃ yajurbhirunnīyate somalokam | sa somaloke vibhūtimanubhūya punarāvartate ||

"If, with two measures, he becomes absorbed in the mind, he is led up by the Yajus formulas to the mid-region, the world of the moon. Having enjoyed glory in the world of the moon, he returns again."

Meaning today and context

Some practices bring real rewards and pleasant experiences, but rewards end. The Upanishad keeps pointing beyond what can be enjoyed and used up.

Pippalāda: one who meditates on two measures of Om ('a-u') is led by the Yajus to the world of the moon, enjoys its splendour, and returns.

5.5 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

yaḥ punaretaṃ trimātreṇomityetenaivākṣareṇa paraṃ puruṣamabhidhyāyīta | sa tejasi sūrye saṃpannaḥ | yathā pādodarastvacā vinirmucyate | evaṃ ha vai sa pāpmanā vinirmuktaḥ sa sāmabhirunnīyate brahmalokam | sa etasmājjīvadhanātparāparaṃ puriśayaṃ puruṣamīkṣate tadetau ślokau bhavataḥ ||

"But one who meditates on the supreme Person with this very syllable Om, of three measures, becomes one with the light, the sun. As a snake is freed from its skin, so he is freed from sin. He is led up by the Sāman chants to the world of Brahman. From this mass of living beings he sees the Person, higher than the high, who dwells in the city (of the body). On this there are two verses:"

Meditation on Om is a spiritual practice, best learned from a qualified teacher. It is not a medical treatment and does not replace care for physical or mental health.

Meaning today and context

Old mistakes and burdens can fall away like a snake's old skin. Full, wholehearted practice is described as leading to seeing the one who lives in every body, including our own.

Pippalāda: one who meditates on the supreme Person through the full three-measure Om is freed from sin as a snake from its old skin and sees the Person who dwells in every body; two verses follow.

5.6 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

tisro mātrā mṛtyumatyaḥ prayuktā anyonyasaktā anaviprayuktāḥ | kriyāsu bāhyābhyantaramadhyamāsu samyakprayuktāsu na kampate jñaḥ ||

"The three measures, when used (separately), are subject to death. When they are joined to one another and not used apart, and rightly employed in activities outer, inner and in between, the knower does not tremble."

Meditation on Om is a spiritual practice, best learned from a qualified teacher. It is not a medical treatment and does not replace care for physical or mental health.

Meaning today and context

Fragments of practice give fragments of result; a life held together as a whole, outer and inner joined, gives steadiness. The one who knows does not tremble.

The first verse: the three measures of Om, each mortal on its own, when joined and rightly used together in outer, inner and middle activity, leave the knower unshaken.

5.7 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

ṛgbhiretaṃ yajurbhirantarikṣaṃ sāmabhiryattatkavayo vedayante | tamoṃkāreṇaivāyatanenānveti vidvānyattacchāntamajaramamṛtamabhayaṃ paraṃ ceti ||

"By the Ṛg verses (one reaches) this world, by the Yajus the mid-region, by the Sāman that which the wise know. By Om alone as support, the one who knows reaches that which is peaceful, unageing, deathless, fearless and supreme."

Meditation on Om is a spiritual practice, best learned from a qualified teacher. It is not a medical treatment and does not replace care for physical or mental health.

Meaning today and context

What we are looking for under all our fears is something peaceful, unageing and fearless. The Upanishad says it can be reached, and gives one simple support for the way: Om.

The second verse, ending the fifth answer: by Om alone as support, the knower reaches the peaceful, unageing, deathless, fearless supreme.
