Question 4

4.1 Sauryayani Gargya to Pippalada

atha hainaṃ sauryāyaṇī gārgyaḥ papraccha | bhagavannetasminpuruṣe kāni svapanti | kānyasmiñjāgrati | katara eṣa devaḥ svapnānpaśyati | kasyaitatsukhaṃ bhavati | kasminnu sarve saṃpratiṣṭhitā bhavantīti ||

Then Sauryāyaṇī Gārgya asked him: "Sir, what is it in this person that sleeps? What stays awake in him? Which god sees the dreams? Whose is this happiness? In what, indeed, do all these come to rest?"

Meaning today and context

Every night we pass through waking, dreams and deep sleep without asking who goes through them. This question turns ordinary sleep into a doorway to self-knowledge.

The fourth question. Sauryāyaṇī Gārgya asks about sleep, waking and dreams: what in a person sleeps, what stays awake, who sees dreams, whose is the happiness of deep sleep, and in what everything comes to rest.

4.2 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

He said to him: "Gārgya, as the rays of the setting sun all become one in that disc of light, and spread out again and again as it rises, so all of this (the senses) becomes one in the highest god, the mind. Then this person does not hear, does not see, does not smell, does not taste, does not touch, does not speak, does not take, does not enjoy, does not excrete, does not move about. They say: 'He is sleeping.'"

Meaning today and context

Sleep is a nightly withdrawal of the senses, like sunset gathering in its rays. Letting the senses rest is natural and healing; the mind gathering itself in is not a loss but a return.

Pippalāda answers Gārgya: in sleep the senses merge into the mind as the rays of the setting sun gather into its disc, and spread out again on waking.

4.3 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

prāṇāgnaya evaitasminpure jāgrati | gārhapatyo ha vā eṣo'pānaḥ | vyāno'nvāhāryapacanaḥ | yadgārhapatyātpraṇīyate praṇayanāt | āhavanīyaḥ prāṇaḥ ||

"It is the fires of prāṇa that stay awake in this city (the body). Apāna is the household fire (gārhapatya); vyāna is the southern fire (anvāhāryapacana); prāṇa is the offering fire (āhavanīya), because it is carried forth from the household fire."

This describes prāṇa in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise, not anatomy, and not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Even when we are unconscious in sleep, something in us keeps watch and keeps us alive. Our body's quiet work deserves gratitude.

Pippalāda: while the senses sleep, the fires of prāṇa stay awake, like the three sacred fires kept burning in a household.

4.4 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

yaducchvāsaniḥśvāsāvetāvāhutī samaṃ nayatīti sa samānaḥ | mano ha vāva yajamānaḥ | iṣṭaphalamevodānaḥ | sa enaṃ yajamānamaharaharbrahma gamayati ||

"Samāna is so called because it brings the two offerings, the in-breath and the out-breath, into balance. The mind is the sacrificer. The fruit of the sacrifice is udāna; it leads this sacrificer day after day to Brahman."

This describes prāṇa in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise, not anatomy, and not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Deep sleep is pictured as a daily visit home: every night the mind is carried back to its source and rests there. That is why good sleep refreshes us so deeply.

Pippalāda completes the image of sleep as an inner sacrifice: samāna balances the in- and out-breath, the mind is the sacrificer, and udāna leads it each day (in deep sleep) to Brahman.

4.5 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

atraiṣa devaḥ svapne mahimānamanubhavati | yaddṛṣṭaṃ iṣṭamanupaśyati | śrutaṃ śrutamevārthamanuśṛṇoti | deśadigantaraiśca pratyanubhūtaṃ punaḥ punaḥ pratyanubhavati | dṛṣṭaṃ cādṛṣṭaṃ ca śrutaṃ cāśrutaṃ cānubhūtaṃ cānanubhūtaṃ ca saccāsacca sarvaṃ paśyati | sarvaḥ paśyati ||

"Here, in dream, this god experiences his own greatness. Whatever has been seen, he sees again; whatever has been heard, he hears again; what he has experienced in other lands and regions he experiences again and again. The seen and the unseen, the heard and the unheard, the experienced and the unexperienced, the real and the unreal: he sees it all; being all, he sees."

Meaning today and context

In dreams the mind becomes the whole world it sees: every person and place in a dream is the mind itself. Noticing this can loosen the grip of our stories by day as well; much of what disturbs us is the mind replaying itself.

Pippalāda on dreaming: in dream the mind ('this god') experiences its own vastness, replaying what it has seen and heard and also creating what it never experienced.

4.6 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

sa yadā tejasābhibhūto bhavati | atraiṣa devaḥ svapnānna paśyati | atha tadaitasmiñśarīra etatsukhaṃ bhavati ||

"When he is overpowered by light (tejas), then this god sees no dreams. Then, in this body, this happiness arises."

Meaning today and context

In dreamless sleep there are no objects, no problems and no stories, and yet it is happy. That suggests peace does not come from getting things, but from the mind becoming quiet.

Pippalāda on deep sleep: when the mind is overpowered by light, it sees no dreams, and the person feels a happiness within the body.

4.7 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

"Just as birds, dear one, come to rest in the tree where they roost, so all of this comes to rest in the supreme Self."

This is teaching about the Self as awareness. It is not a reason to neglect the body, family, work or medical and mental-health care.

Meaning today and context

At the end of the day, like birds returning to their tree, everything in us can come home and rest. There is a place of rest within us that does not need anything to be fixed first.

Pippalāda answers "in what does everything rest?": as birds go home to a tree to roost, all of this comes to rest in the supreme Self.

Meaning today and context

Every part of experience comes in pairs, a faculty and its object, even the sense of 'I'. All of it, the Upanishad says, rests in something that is not one more item on the list.

Pippalāda lists everything that comes to rest in the Self: the elements and their subtle forms, each sense with its object, each organ of action with its task, and mind, intellect, ego, thought, light and life with their objects.

4.9 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

eṣa hi draṣṭā spraṣṭā śrotā ghrātā rasayitā mantā boddhā kartā vijñānātmā puruṣaḥ | sa pare'kṣara ātmani saṃpratiṣṭhate ||

"For it is he who sees, touches, hears, smells, tastes, thinks, understands and acts: the person whose nature is understanding (vijñānātman). He comes to rest in the supreme, imperishable Self."

This is teaching about the Self as awareness. It is not a reason to neglect the body, family, work or medical and mental-health care.

Meaning today and context

Behind all our seeing, thinking and doing there is a 'someone' who knows. Even that knower rests in something deeper and unchanging, which can steady us when our activities and roles shift.

Pippalāda names the one who experiences all this: the knowing person within, who sees, hears and acts, and who rests in the imperishable supreme Self.

4.10 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

paramevākṣaraṃ pratipadyate | sa yo ha vai tadacchāyamaśarīramalohitaṃ śubhramakṣaraṃ vedayate yastu somya | sa sarvaḥ sarvo bhavati | tadeṣa ślokaḥ ||

"He reaches the supreme imperishable itself. Whoever, dear one, knows that imperishable which is without shadow, without body, without colour, and bright, becomes all-knowing and becomes all. On this there is a verse:"

This is teaching about the Self as awareness. It is not a reason to neglect the body, family, work or medical and mental-health care.

Meaning today and context

What we most deeply are has no shadow, no body, no colour: nothing that can be stained or aged. Knowing that is described not as shrinking into a corner but as becoming one with everything.

Pippalāda: one who knows the imperishable, shadowless and bodiless, reaches it and becomes all; a verse follows.

4.11 Pippalada to Sauryayani Gargya

vijñānātmā saha devaiśca sarvaiḥ prāṇā bhūtāni saṃpratiṣṭhanti yatra | tadakṣaraṃ vedayate yastu somya sa sarvajñaḥ sarvamevāviveśeti ||

"Dear one, whoever knows that imperishable in which the knowing self, together with all the powers, the breaths and the elements, comes to rest, he, knowing all, enters into all."

This is teaching about the Self as awareness. It is not a reason to neglect the body, family, work or medical and mental-health care.

Meaning today and context

There is one ground that holds the knower, the senses and the world together. Knowing it is described as no longer feeling a stranger to anything.

The verse ending Pippalāda's answer to Gārgya: knowing the imperishable in which the knowing self, the senses, the breaths and the elements all rest, one knows all and enters all.
