Prakaraṇa 7

7.1 Shankaracharya

buddhyārūḍhaṃ sadā sarvaṃ dṛśyate yatra tatra vā | mayā tasmātparaṃ brahma sarvajñaścāsmi sarvagaḥ ||

Everything that has mounted onto the intellect, anywhere at all, is always seen by me. Therefore I am the supreme Brahman, all-knowing and all-pervading.

Meaning today and context

Every thought, image and feeling shows up in front of awareness. The verse invites you to identify with that awareness, which is present to all of it, rather than with any one passing content.

Opening the chapter on the intellect, Shankaracharya argues that whatever appears in any intellect is seen by the one consciousness, so that consciousness is Brahman.

7.2 Shankaracharya

yathātmabuddhicārāṇāṃ sākṣī tadvatpareṣvapi | naivāpoḍhuṃ na vādātuṃ śakyastasmātparo hyaham ||

As I am the witness of the movements of my own intellect, so I am of others' as well. I can neither be removed nor taken up; therefore I am the Supreme.

Meaning today and context

Your thoughts and moods keep moving; the one who watches them does not. You cannot throw away or pick up your own awareness. Resting as that witness can loosen the grip of anxious thinking.

Shankaracharya: the Self is the witness of the intellect's movements, its own and others', and can neither be set aside nor taken up like an object.

7.3 Shankaracharya

vikāritvamaśuddhatvaṃ bhautikatvaṃ na cātmanaḥ | aśeṣabuddhisākṣitvādbuddhivaccālpavedanā ||

Change, impurity and being made of the elements do not belong to the Self, since it is the witness of every intellect without exception; nor is its knowing limited, as the intellect's is.

Meaning today and context

What watches change does not itself change. On a day when your mind feels muddied or small, the verse reminds you that the awareness noticing it is not muddied or small.

Shankaracharya: because the Self witnesses every intellect, it cannot share the intellect's traits of change, impurity, material make-up or limited knowing.

7.4 Shankaracharya

maṇau prakāśyate yadvadraktādyākāratātape | mayi saṃdṛśyate sarvamātapeneva tanmayā ||

As in a crystal the appearance of red and other colours is made visible in sunlight, so everything is seen in me, and it is by me, as by sunlight, [that it is revealed].

Meaning today and context

A clear crystal looks red beside a red flower, but it is not red. Feelings colour awareness in the same way without staining it; the light by which you see them is your own.

Shankaracharya's image: in sunlight a clear crystal shows red and other colours; so everything appears in the Self, lit up by it as by the sun.

7.5 Shankaracharya

buddhau dṛśyaṃ bhavedbuddhau satyāṃ nāsti viparyaye | draṣṭā yasmātsadā draṣṭā tasmāddvaitaṃ na vidyate ||

The seen exists in the intellect only while the intellect exists, and not when it is absent. Since the seer is always the seer, duality does not exist.

Meaning today and context

Worlds of worry come and go with the mind's activity, as in sleep they vanish. What stays through all of it is the one who sees. That steadiness is closer to you than any problem.

Shankaracharya argues that objects appear only while the intellect is active, while the seer is always seeing; so there is no real second thing.

7.6 Shankaracharya

avivekātparābhāvaṃ yathā buddhiravettathā | vivekāttu parādanyaḥ svayaṃ cāpi na vidyate ||

As the intellect, from lack of discrimination, takes the Supreme to be non-existent, so from discrimination it [knows] that, apart from the Supreme, it itself does not exist either.

Meaning today and context

A mind that does not look carefully decides there is nothing beyond itself. Looking closely, it finds it has no life of its own apart from the awareness that lights it.

Shankaracharya closes the chapter: without discrimination the intellect denies the Supreme; with discrimination it sees that, apart from the Supreme, it does not exist itself.
