Prakaraṇa 8

8.1 Shankaracharya

citisvarūpaṃ svata eva me mate rasādiyogastava mohakāritaḥ | ato na kiṃcittava ceṣṭitena me phalaṃ bhavetsarvaviśeṣahānataḥ ||

[O mind,] I hold that I am, by my own nature, pure consciousness. Your connection with taste and the other [sense objects] is caused by delusion. So no result at all can come to me from your activity, since I am free of every particular attribute.

Meaning today and context

You can speak to your restless mind as this verse does: its cravings and schemes do not add to or take from who you are. That can quiet the feeling that everything depends on getting the next thing.

In the chapter 'Dissolving the Mind', the Self, speaking in the first person, addresses the mind: your tie to sense pleasures comes from delusion, and nothing you do adds anything to me.

8.2 Shankaracharya

vimucya māyāmayakāryatāmiha praśāntimāyāhyasadīhitātsadā | ahaṃ paraṃ brahma sadā vimuktavattathājamekaṃ dvayavarjitaṃ yataḥ ||

Give up, here and now, being the doer of what is made of māyā, and come to lasting peace from your striving after the unreal. For I am the supreme Brahman, ever free as it were, unborn, one, without a second.

This speaks to the mind's chasing after what is unreal; it is not advice to stop working or caring for your responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

The mind is told, kindly but firmly, to stop running. For a person today it can mean: notice how much of your restlessness is chasing things that will not last, and let the mind settle.

The Self continues to address the mind, urging it to drop its unreal striving and come to rest.

8.3 Shankaracharya

sadā ca bhūteṣu samo'smi kevalo yathā ca khaṃ sarvagamakṣaraṃ śivam | nirantaraṃ niṣkalamakriyaṃ paraṃ tato na me'stīha phalaṃ tavehitaiḥ ||

I am always the same in all beings, alone, like space: all-pervading, imperishable, auspicious, without gaps, without parts, actionless, supreme. Therefore I get no fruit here from your strivings.

Meaning today and context

Space is not improved by what happens inside it. The verse points to a part of you that needs no achievement to be whole, which can make effort lighter rather than desperate.

The Self tells the mind that, being like space, it is the same in all beings and gains nothing from the mind's efforts.

8.4 Shankaracharya

ahaṃ mamaiko na tadanyadiṣyate tathā na kasyāpyahamasmyasaṅgataḥ | asaṅgarūpo'hamato na me tvayā kṛtena kāryaṃ tava cādvayatvataḥ ||

I alone am my own; nothing other than that is admitted. Nor do I belong to anyone, being unattached. I am of the nature of non-attachment; so I have no need of what you do, and you [have nothing to do] either, since there is no second.

'I belong to no one' is about the Self, not a reason to abandon family, friends or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level no one owns you and you own no one. Inwardly this frees love from possessiveness; it is not a reason to withdraw from the people you care for.

The Self tells the mind that it belongs to itself alone and to no one else, being unattached, so neither has anything to do for it.

8.5 Shankaracharya

phale ca hetau ca jano viṣaktavāniti pracintyāhamato vimokṣaṇe | janasya saṃvādamimaṃ prakḷptavānsvarūpatattvārthavibodhakāraṇam ||

Reflecting that people are attached to results and to their causes, I composed this dialogue for their freedom, as a means of awakening to the truth of their own nature.

Meaning today and context

The teaching is offered as a tool: a conversation you can have with your own mind when it is caught up in results.

Shankaracharya explains why he composed this dialogue between the Self and the mind.

8.6 Shankaracharya

saṃvādametaṃ yadi cintayennaro vimucyate'jñānamahābhayāgamāt | vimuktakāmaśca tathā janaḥ sadā caratyaśokaḥ sama ātmavitsukhī ||

If a person reflects on this dialogue, he is freed from the great fear that comes from ignorance. Free of desires, such a person always goes about without grief, even-minded, knowing the Self, happy.

Meaning today and context

Much fear comes from mistaking ourselves for what can be lost. Seeing through that, a person can move through life with less dread, more balance and a quieter kind of happiness.

Shankaracharya states the fruit of reflecting on the dialogue: release from the fear born of ignorance, and a life free of grief.
