Chapter 10

10.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

vihāya vairiṇaṃ kāmamarthaṃ cānarthasaṅkulam | dharmamapyetayorhetuṃ sarvatrānādaraṃ kuru ||

Giving up desire, which is an enemy, and wealth, which is full of misfortune, and even dharma, which is the cause of both, be indifferent to everything.

Not advice to give up ethics, honesty, livelihood or care for others. 'Indifference' here is inner non-clinging, not neglect of duties.

Meaning today and context

The verse goes beyond giving up pleasure and money: even our pride in being good can become a chain. Freedom lies beyond all three of these aims of life.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): give up desire, the enemy, and wealth, full of trouble, and even dharma, their cause, and be indifferent to all.

10.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

svapnendrajālavatpaśya dināni trīṇi pañca vā | mitrakṣetradhanāgāradāradāyādisampadaḥ ||

See friends, land, wealth, house, wife, gifts, inheritance and all such fortune as a dream or a magician's show, lasting three days or five.

Not advice to neglect one's spouse, friends or family; listing a wife among possessions reflects its time, and no person is property.

Meaning today and context

Everything we hold onto is ours only for a short while. Remembering that can make us cherish people more and fight over property less.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): see friends, land, wealth, house, wife, gifts, inheritance and the like as a dream or magic show lasting three or five days.

10.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yatra yatra bhavettṛṣṇā, saṃsāraṃ viddhi tatra vai | prauḍhavairāgyamāśritya vītatṛṣṇaḥ sukhī bhava ||

Wherever there is thirst, know that there is worldly existence. Taking refuge in mature dispassion, free of thirst, be happy.

Meaning today and context

Wherever you feel 'I won't be okay until I get this', that is where you are bound. Happiness comes from loosening that thirst, not from finally quenching it.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): wherever there is thirst, there is worldly existence; resting in mature dispassion, free of thirst, be happy.

10.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

tṛṣṇāmātrātmako bandhas, tannāśo mokṣa ucyate | bhavāsaṃsaktimātreṇa prāptituṣṭirmuhurmuhuḥ ||

Bondage consists of thirst alone; its destruction is called liberation. By mere non-attachment to worldly existence, one gains the joy of contentment again and again.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not far away or complicated: each time you let go of a craving, you taste contentment. It is a practice you can return to many times a day.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): bondage is nothing but thirst, and its end is liberation; by simply not clinging to worldly life, one finds contentment again and again.

10.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

You are one, conscious and pure; the world is inert and unreal. Ignorance too is nothing at all. Even so, what is it you still wish to know?

Meaning today and context

There comes a point where endless seeking and reading becomes another form of restlessness. The verse invites you to stop hunting and rest in what you already are.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): you alone are conscious and pure, the world is inert and unreal, and ignorance too is nothing; so what is left to seek to know?

10.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

rājyaṃ sutāḥ kalatrāṇi śarīrāṇi sukhāni ca | saṃsaktasyāpi naṣṭāni tava janmani janmani ||

Kingdoms, sons, wives, bodies and pleasures: though you were attached to them, they have been lost to you, birth after birth.

For someone who has lost a loved one: grief is natural and deserves care. This verse does not dismiss mourning or say love was a mistake.

Meaning today and context

Clinging has never been able to keep anything. Knowing that loss is part of life can help us love without clutching, and hold our grief with less bitterness.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): kingdoms, sons, wives, bodies and pleasures, however attached you were, have been lost to you birth after birth.

10.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

alamarthena kāmena sukṛtenāpi karmaṇā | ebhyaḥ saṃsārakāntāre na viśrāntamabhūnmanaḥ ||

Enough of wealth, of desire, and even of meritorious action! Through these the mind found no rest in the dense forest of worldly existence.

Not a call to give up work, earning or helping others; it points to where rest is found.

Meaning today and context

More money, more pleasure and even more good deeds will not by themselves bring rest. Peace has to be found in a different direction: inward.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): enough of wealth, desire and even good deeds: through them the mind has found no rest in the wilderness of worldly life.

10.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kṛtaṃ na kati janmāni kāyena manasā girā | duḥkhamāyāsadaṃ karma tadadyāpyuparamyatām ||

For how many births have you not performed action with body, mind and speech, action that is painful and wearying? Now at least, let it cease.

Not advice to stop working or abandon responsibilities. If you feel burnt out or exhausted, talk to someone you trust or a counsellor; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Endless striving, much of it driven by compulsion, wears us out. The verse invites a stop to that inner driven-ness, the restless 'doing' behind the doing.

Ashtavakra teaches tranquillity (upaśama): in how many births have you not toiled with body, mind and speech in painful, wearying action? Now at least, let it cease.
