11.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhāvābhāvavikāraśca svabhāvāditi niścayī | nirvikāro gatakleśaḥ sukhenaivopaśāmyati ||

One who is certain that existence, non-existence and change all arise from the nature of things becomes changeless and free of distress, and easily finds peace.

Meaning today and context

Things begin, end and change; that is simply how the world works, not a personal attack. Accepting this makes change much easier to bear.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that coming into being, ceasing and change are just the nature of things becomes unchanging, free of distress and at peace.

11.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

īśvaraḥ sarvanirmātā nehānya iti niścayī | antargalitasarvāśaḥ śāntaḥ kvāpi na sajjate ||

One who is certain that the Lord is the creator of all and there is no other here, with all his hopes melted away within, is at peace and is not attached to anything.

Meaning today and context

Trusting that you are not the one holding the whole world together takes an enormous weight off. Anxious expectations can soften into peace.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that the Lord is the maker of all and no one else, with all expectations melted within, is at peace and clings to nothing.

11.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

āpadaḥ sampadaḥ kāle daivādeveti niścayī | tṛptaḥ svasthendriyo nityaṃ na vāñchati na śocati ||

One who is certain that misfortune and good fortune come in their own time, by destiny alone, is contented, his senses at ease; he neither longs nor grieves.

Accepting what comes is not passivity: still act to prevent harm, seek treatment and help, and take responsible decisions.

Meaning today and context

Good and bad times both come, often beyond our control. Accepting this lets you work for things without being destroyed when luck turns.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that misfortunes and fortunes come in their time by destiny is content, with senses at ease, neither longing nor grieving.

11.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sukhaduḥkhe janmamṛtyū daivādeveti niścayī | sādhyādarśī nirāyāsaḥ kurvannapi na lipyate ||

One who is certain that pleasure and pain, birth and death come by destiny alone, seeing nothing that must be achieved, is free of strain; though acting, he is not tainted.

Accepting what comes is not passivity: still act to prevent harm, seek treatment and help, and take responsible decisions.

Meaning today and context

You can keep working fully without the frantic sense that everything depends on you. Action without that strain is lighter and less binding.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that pleasure and pain, birth and death come by destiny, seeing nothing to be achieved, is free of strain and is not tainted even while acting.

11.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

One who is certain that suffering here is born of anxious thought and of nothing else, being free of it, is happy and calm, his longings fallen away everywhere.

Not a dismissal of real problems or of illness. Persistent anxiety or depression deserves professional help; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our pain is added by the mind going over and over things. Noticing worry as worry, not as reality, can bring real relief.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that suffering here comes from anxious thinking and nothing else, freed of it, is happy, calm and without longing anywhere.

11.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nāhaṃ deho na me deho bodho'hamiti niścayī | kaivalyamiva saṃprāpto na smaratyakṛtaṃ kṛtam ||

One who is certain 'I am not the body, nor is the body mine; I am awareness' has, as it were, attained the state of absolute freedom, and no longer remembers what he has done or left undone.

Not a reason to neglect the body, health or treatment, or to dismiss one's responsibilities; the teaching is about identity, not self-neglect.

Meaning today and context

Knowing yourself as awareness rather than as a body or a record of deeds can free you from regret and from always measuring what you have or haven't done.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain 'I am not the body, nor is the body mine; I am awareness' attains as it were the state of aloneness, and no longer recalls what was done or left undone.

11.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

One who is certain 'from Brahmā down to a tuft of grass, I alone am' is free of mental constructions, pure and at peace, indifferent to what is gained or not gained.

Meaning today and context

When you feel one with all that exists, gaining or missing out matters much less. Comparison and fear of loss lose their footing.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that from Brahma down to a blade of grass all is 'I' alone is free of mental constructions, pure, at peace, and unconcerned with gain or loss.

11.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nānāścaryamidaṃ viśvaṃ na kiṃciditi niścayī | nirvāsanaḥ sphūrtimātro na kiṃcidiva śāmyati ||

One who is certain that this universe, with its many wonders, is nothing at all, becomes free of latent desires, mere shining awareness, and is at peace as if nothing existed.

Meaning today and context

When the world's dazzle no longer grips you, a deep quiet opens up. This is not despair about life but freedom from being driven by it.

Ashtavakra describes the peace of one with firm understanding (niścayī): one certain that this manifold, wondrous universe is nothing, free of latent desires, pure shining awareness, is at peace as if nothing at all were.
