Chapter 19

19.1 Janaka to Ashtavakra

tattvavijñānasandaṃśamādāya hṛdayodarāt | nānāvidhaparāmarśaśalyoddhāraḥ kṛto mayā ||

Taking the tongs of the knowledge of truth, I have pulled out from the depths of my heart the thorn of all kinds of opinions and judgements.

Meaning today and context

Many of our pains are opinions lodged inside us like thorns: what others should be, what life owes us, what we must prove. Seeing clearly can draw them out one by one, and the relief is real.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that with the tongs of true knowledge he has pulled out the thorns of his many opinions from deep within his heart.

19.2 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva dharmaḥ kva ca vā kāmaḥ kva cārthaḥ kva vivekitā | kva dvaitaṃ kva ca vādvaitaṃ svamahimni sthitasya me ||

Where is dharma, where is pleasure, where is wealth, where is discrimination? Where is duality, and where even non-duality, for me who abide in my own greatness?

Describes the inner state of a knower, not permission to ignore ethics, honesty or responsibilities to others.

Meaning today and context

Even our best frameworks, including spiritual ones, are tools. When you rest in who you are, you no longer need to defend a position, even 'non-duality' itself.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that for one established in his own greatness, the aims of life and even the debate between duality and non-duality no longer arise.

19.3 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva bhūtaṃ kva bhaviṣyadvā vartamānamapi kva vā | kva deśaḥ kva ca vā nityaṃ svamahimni sthitasya me ||

Where is the past, where the future, where even the present? Where is place, and where even the eternal, for me who abide in my own greatness?

Meaning today and context

Regret lives in the past and worry in the future. The awareness in which they appear is not itself caught in time, and resting there loosens both.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that past, future, present, place and even permanence do not touch one resting in his own greatness.

19.4 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva cātmā kva ca vānātmā kva śubhaṃ kvāśubhaṃ yathā | kva cintā kva ca vācintā svamahimni sthitasya me ||

Where is the Self, where the not-Self, where good and where bad; where is thought, and where even thoughtlessness, for me who abide in my own greatness?

Speaks of the Self beyond categories, not a denial of right and wrong in how we treat others.

Meaning today and context

Trying hard not to think is still thinking. Peace is not a struggle between thought and no-thought but a resting that does not need either.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that the very categories of Self and not-Self, good and bad, thinking and not-thinking have fallen away.

19.5 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva svapnaḥ kva suṣuptirvā kva ca jāgaraṇaṃ tathā | kva turīyaṃ bhayaṃ vāpi svamahimni sthitasya me ||

Where is dream, where deep sleep, and where waking too; where is the fourth state, or even fear, for me who abide in my own greatness?

Meaning today and context

States come and go, waking, dreaming, sleeping, and even special meditative states. What knows them all is not one more state to chase, and fear has no foothold there.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that waking, dream, deep sleep, the 'fourth' state and fear all lie outside his own nature.

19.6 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva dūraṃ kva samīpaṃ vā bāhyaṃ kvābhyantaraṃ kva vā | kva sthūlaṃ kva ca vā sūkṣmaṃ svamahimni sthitasya me ||

Where is far, where near; where outside, where inside; where is gross and where subtle, for me who abide in my own greatness?

Meaning today and context

We often feel the peace we want is far away or hidden deep inside. Awareness is not located anywhere; it is never distant from you.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that distance and nearness, inside and outside, gross and subtle do not apply to his own nature.

19.7 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva mṛtyurjīvitaṃ vā kva lokāḥ kvāsya kva laukikam | kva layaḥ kva samādhirvā svamahimni sthitasya me ||

Where is death, or life; where are the worlds, where worldly concerns for such a one; where is dissolution, or samadhi, for me who abide in my own greatness?

Meaning today and context

The fear of death is the fear of something ending. The verse points to awareness that is not born and does not end, and to a peace that is not even dependent on reaching samadhi.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that death and life, the worlds and worldly affairs, dissolution and samadhi have no place in his own nature.

19.8 Janaka to Ashtavakra

alaṃ trivargakathayā yogasya kathayāpyalam | alaṃ vijñānakathayā viśrāntasya mamātmani ||

Enough of talk about the three aims of life; enough too of talk about yoga; enough of talk about knowledge, for me who have come to rest in the Self.

Meaning today and context

There comes a point where more reading and discussing adds nothing; what is needed is to rest in what has been understood. Talk about peace is not peace.

Janaka, at rest in his own nature after Ashtavakra's teaching, tells his teacher that, resting in the Self, he has had enough of talk about the aims of life, about yoga, and even about knowledge.
