Chapter 18

18.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yasya bodhodaye tāvatsvapnavadbhavati bhramaḥ | tasmai sukhaikarūpāya namaḥ śāntāya tejase ||

Salutations to that peaceful light, whose one form is bliss, at whose awakening all delusion becomes like a dream.

Meaning today and context

When we wake from a bad dream, its terrors simply lose their hold. The verse honours the kind of clear seeing that does the same to our confusions about who we are.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he opens with a salutation to the light of awareness, at whose dawning delusion turns out to be like a dream.

18.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

arjayitvākhilānarthānbhogānāpnoti puṣkalān | na hi sarvaparityāgamantareṇa sukhī bhavet ||

One may earn every kind of wealth and obtain abundant pleasures, yet without giving up everything no one becomes truly happy.

Inner letting go is meant here; this is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Getting more can bring pleasure, but not lasting contentment. Peace comes when the grip of wanting loosens, whatever one happens to have.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that gaining every kind of wealth brings plenty of enjoyment, but happiness comes only by letting go of everything.

18.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kartavyaduḥkhamārtaṇḍajvālādagdhāntarātmanaḥ | kutaḥ praśamapīyūṣadhārāsāramṛte sukham ||

For one whose inner being is burnt by the blazing sun of the pain of duties to be done, where is happiness without a downpour of the nectar of calm?

Speaks of inner calm, not of neglecting duties; if exhaustion or burnout is severe, rest and professional help matter (Tele-MANAS 14416).

Meaning today and context

An endless to-do list can scorch the mind like a summer sun. More doing will not cool it; what helps is a settling inside, a calm that is not waiting for the list to end.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he describes the inner self scorched by the sun of 'things I must do', and says only the rain of calm can bring happiness.

18.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhavo'yaṃ bhāvanāmātro na kiṃcitparamārthataḥ | nāstyabhāvaḥ svabhāvānāṃ bhāvābhāvavibhāvinām ||

This worldly existence is mere imagining; in the highest truth it is nothing. Yet for those who discern both being and non-being, their own true nature never ceases to be.

Meaning today and context

Much of what weighs on us is the story the mind builds around events. Seeing that clearly does not make you vanish; it shows what in you stays, whatever comes and goes.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says worldly existence is only a projection of the mind; for those who see through being and non-being, their own true nature never ceases to be.

18.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na dūraṃ na ca saṅkocāllabdhamevātmanaḥ padam | nirvikalpaṃ nirāyāsaṃ nirvikāraṃ nirañjanam ||

The state of the Self is not far off, nor is it gained by limiting oneself; it is already attained: beyond thought-constructs, effortless, changeless and spotless.

Meaning today and context

We often treat peace as a distant prize earned by squeezing ourselves into a smaller shape. The verse says what you are looking for is already here, before any effort.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the Self is neither far away nor gained by narrowing oneself; it is already attained, free of thought, effort, change and stain.

18.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

vyāmohamātraviratau svarūpādānamātrataḥ | vītaśokā virājante nirāvaraṇadṛṣṭayaḥ ||

When mere delusion ceases, simply by taking hold of their own nature, people shine free of sorrow, their sight no longer covered.

When someone is grieving a loss, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not dismiss mourning.

Meaning today and context

Sorrow often rests on a mistaken picture of ourselves. Nothing new has to be added; when the confusion drops, what was already clear can be seen.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that when delusion simply stops and one just recognises one's own nature, people shine free of sorrow, their vision unveiled.

18.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

samastaṃ kalpanāmātramātmā muktaḥ sanātanaḥ | iti vijñāya dhīro hi kimabhyasyati bālavat ||

Knowing that all this is mere imagination and the Self is free and eternal, why would the wise one go on practising like a child?

The verse speaks of the goal, not against useful practice; meditation, therapy or treatment that helps someone should not be dropped because of it.

Meaning today and context

Practice is a means, not an identity. Once something is truly understood, endlessly rehearsing it can become one more way of not trusting it.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that one who knows everything is imagination and the Self is ever free does not go on 'practising' like a child.

18.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ātmā brahmeti niścitya bhāvābhāvau ca kalpitau | niṣkāmaḥ kiṃ vijānāti kiṃ brūte ca karoti kiṃ ||

Having become certain that the Self is Brahman and that being and non-being are imagined, what does the desireless one know, what does he say, what does he do?

Meaning today and context

When the need to prove, explain or achieve falls away, one can still act and speak, but without the inner pressure behind it.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one who is sure that the Self is Brahman, and that being and non-being are imagined, has no desire left: what is there for him to know, say or do?

18.9 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ayaṃ so'hamayaṃ nāhamiti kṣīṇā vikalpanāḥ | sarvamātmeti niścitya tūṣṇībhūtasya yoginaḥ ||

For the yogi who has become silent, certain that everything is the Self, the notions 'this I am' and 'this I am not' have worn away.

Meaning today and context

Much inner noise is the constant sorting of 'me' and 'not me': my group, my image, my side. Seeing the whole as one quiets that sorting.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that for the yogi who has fallen silent, sure that all is the Self, thoughts like 'this I am, this I am not' have worn away.

18.10 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na vikṣepo na caikāgryaṃ nātibodho na mūḍhatā | na sukhaṃ na ca vā duḥkhamupaśāntasya yoginaḥ ||

For the yogi who is fully at peace there is no distraction and no one-pointedness, no surplus of knowing and no dullness, no pleasure and no pain.

Meaning today and context

We judge our days by whether we were focused or scattered, sharp or dull, happy or sad. There is a deeper ease that does not depend on which of these is passing through.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that for the yogi who is fully at peace there is neither distraction nor concentration, neither excess knowing nor dullness, neither pleasure nor pain.

18.11 Ashtavakra to Janaka

svārājye bhaikṣavṛttau ca lābhālābhe jane vane | nirvikalpasvabhāvasya na viśeṣo'sti yoginaḥ ||

Whether in sovereignty or living on alms, in gain or loss, among people or in the forest, there is no difference for the yogi whose nature is free of thought-constructs.

Inner letting go is meant here; this is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Status, money and surroundings change; an inner steadiness need not. Whether you are promoted or laid off, in a busy city or alone, the same calm can be there.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that for the yogi whose nature is free of mental constructs, ruling a kingdom or living on alms, gain or loss, crowds or forest, make no difference.

18.12 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kva dharmaḥ kva ca vā kāmaḥ kva cārthaḥ kva vivekitā | idaṃ kṛtamidaṃ neti dvandvairmuktasya yoginaḥ ||

Where is dharma, where desire, where wealth, where even discrimination, for the yogi freed from the pairs of opposites such as 'this is done, this is not done'?

Describes the inner freedom of one already free of ego; it is not a licence to drop ethics, harm anyone or ignore the consequences of one's actions.

Meaning today and context

The goals of life matter, but they can turn into a ledger we anxiously tally. The verse points to a freedom beneath the ledger, not to throwing ethics away.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that for the yogi free of opposites like 'this is done, this is not', where is dharma, desire, wealth, or even discrimination?

18.13 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kṛtyaṃ kimapi naivāsti na kāpi hṛdi rañjanā | yathājīvanameveha jīvanmuktasya yoginaḥ ||

For the yogi liberated while living, there is nothing whatever that must be done, no attachment in the heart; here he simply lives as life comes.

Describes the inner state of a free person; it is not advice to stop working or caring for others.

Meaning today and context

There is a way of living without the constant feeling of 'I must'. Work still gets done, but from ease rather than compulsion.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that for the yogi liberated while living there is nothing that must be done and no colouring in the heart; he simply lives as life comes.

18.14 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kva mohaḥ kva ca vā viśvaṃ kva taddhyānaṃ kva muktatā | sarvasaṅkalpasīmāyāṃ viśrāntasya mahātmanaḥ ||

Where is delusion, where the world, where meditation on That, where liberation, for the great soul at rest at the boundary of all intentions?

Meaning today and context

Even the wish to be liberated is one more wanting. Real rest comes when the mind stops reaching, even for spiritual goals.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that for the great soul resting where all intentions end, there is no delusion, no world, no meditation on That, and no liberation.

18.15 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Let one who has seen this world as real go on saying 'it does not exist'. What does the one without latent desires do? Even while seeing, he does not see.

Meaning today and context

Fighting a craving by constantly telling yourself it doesn't matter keeps it alive. When the pull is truly gone, there is nothing to fight.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he contrasts one who has seen the world and so must deny it, with the one without latent desires, who sees yet does not see.

18.16 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yena dṛṣṭaṃ paraṃ brahma so'haṃ brahmeti cintayet | kiṃ cintayati niścinto dvitīyaṃ yo na paśyati ||

One who has seen the supreme Brahman may reflect 'I am Brahman'. But what is there to think for one beyond thought, who sees no second?

Meaning today and context

Affirmations about who we are can help, but they still keep a gap between the one repeating and what is repeated. Full understanding needs no repetition.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one who has seen Brahman may think 'I am Brahman', but the one beyond thought, who sees no second, has nothing to think.

18.17 Ashtavakra to Janaka

dṛṣṭo yenātmavikṣepo nirodhaṃ kurute tvasau | udārastu na vikṣiptaḥ sādhyābhāvātkaroti kim ||

One who has seen his own mind scattered practises restraint. But the noble one is not scattered; with nothing to achieve, what is he to do?

Meaning today and context

Discipline is a response to a problem. It is useful while the mind scatters; but the aim is a mind that no longer needs to be held down.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one who notices his own distraction practises restraint, but the noble one is not distracted; having nothing to achieve, what should he do?

18.18 Ashtavakra to Janaka

dhīro lokaviparyasto varttamāno'pi lokavat | na samādhiṃ na vikṣepaṃ na lepaṃ svasya paśyati ||

The wise one, though turned the opposite way from the world, lives like ordinary people; he sees in himself neither samadhi, nor distraction, nor any taint.

Meaning today and context

Inner freedom need not look special from outside. One can go to work, shop and chat like everyone else, without anxiously checking how spiritual one is.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the wise one, though inwardly the opposite of the world, lives just like others, and sees in himself neither absorption, nor distraction, nor taint.

18.19 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhāvābhāvavihīno yastṛpto nirvāsano budhaḥ | naiva kiṃcitkṛtaṃ tena lokadṛṣṭyā vikurvatā ||

The wise one who is beyond being and non-being, contented and free of latent desires, does nothing at all, though in the world's eyes he acts.

Meaning today and context

Two people can do the same work; one is driven and consumed, the other is content and untouched. The difference is inside, not in the activity.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the wise one, beyond being and non-being, content and free of latent desires, does nothing at all, though in the world's eyes he is active.

18.20 Ashtavakra to Janaka

pravṛttau vā nirvṛttau vā naiva dhīrasya durgrahaḥ | yadā yatkartumāyāti tatkṛtvā tiṣṭhataḥ sukham ||

The wise one has no stubborn grip either on action or on withdrawal; whatever comes to be done, he does it and remains at ease.

Meaning today and context

Some people cling to being busy, others to retreat. Freedom is doing what the moment asks, then letting it go, without making a rule of either.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the wise one has no stubborn hold on either activity or withdrawal; he does whatever comes to be done and stays at ease.

18.21 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nirvāsano nirālambaḥ svacchando muktabandhanaḥ | kṣiptaḥ saṃskāravātena ceṣṭate śuṣkaparṇavat ||

Free of latent desire, depending on nothing, free in his ways, his bonds released, he moves like a dry leaf blown by the wind of past impressions.

Describes the effortless life of a free person; it is not advice to drift, give up responsibility or act on every impulse.

Meaning today and context

A leaf in the wind does not argue with the wind. Letting habits of body and mind play out without adding resistance or ownership can bring great ease.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he compares the one free of desire, dependence and bondage to a dry leaf moved by the wind of past impressions.

18.22 Ashtavakra to Janaka

For one who is no longer bound by the world, there is no elation and no dejection anywhere; ever cool-minded, he shines as if without a body.

Meaning today and context

Highs and lows need not throw us around. A cool mind still feels, but is not carried off by every surge of joy or gloom.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one no longer caught in worldly existence has neither elation nor dejection anywhere; with a cool mind he shines as if bodiless.

18.23 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kutrāpi na jihāsāsti nāśo vāpi na kutracit | ātmārāmasya dhīrasya śītalācchatarātmanaḥ ||

The wise one who delights in the Self, whose inner being is cool and utterly clear, has no wish to give anything up, nor any sense of loss anywhere.

Meaning today and context

Even 'giving up' can be a struggle. When we are content inside, we neither cling nor need to push things away.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the wise one who delights in the Self, cool and clear within, has no wish to give up anything and no sense of loss anywhere.

18.24 Ashtavakra to Janaka

prakṛtyā śūnyacittasya kurvato'sya yadṛcchayā | prākṛtasyeva dhīrasya na māno nāvamānatā ||

The wise one, whose mind is naturally empty and who acts as things come, is like an ordinary person; yet for him there is neither pride nor humiliation.

Meaning today and context

Praise and insult land hard when we carry an image to defend. Without that image, one can live simply among others and not be wounded by their opinions.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the wise one, empty of mental agitation by nature and acting as things come, is like an ordinary person yet untouched by honour or dishonour.

kṛtaṃ dehena karmedaṃ na mayā śuddharūpiṇā | iti cintānurodhī yaḥ kurvannapi karoti na ||

'This action is done by the body, not by me, the pure one': one who keeps to this thought does not act even while acting.

'Not the doer' is about identity, not responsibility: we still answer for what our bodies and words do to others.

Meaning today and context

We can do our work fully while not tying our sense of self to every action. That frees us from carrying each task as a weight on our identity.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one who keeps in view the thought 'this act is done by the body, not by me, who am pure', does not act even while acting.

Meaning today and context

Real understanding rarely needs to announce itself. A free person can look quite ordinary, without preaching, and still be clear and content.

Meaning today and context

Overthinking can exhaust itself. There comes a point where the mind stops chasing answers and simply rests, and that rest is itself a kind of answer.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the wise one, worn out by many kinds of reasoning, has come to rest; he no longer imagines, knows, hears or sees as before.

Being neither in samadhi nor distracted, neither seeking liberation nor otherwise, having seen with certainty that all is imagined, the great-hearted one abides as Brahman itself.

Meaning today and context

Labels like 'seeker', 'meditator' or 'worldly' can become another role to play. Beyond them is simply being what one is.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the great-hearted one, being neither in absorption nor in distraction, neither a seeker of liberation nor anything else, sees all as imagined and abides as Brahman.

Describes the inner freedom of one already free of ego; it is not a licence to drop ethics, harm anyone or ignore the consequences of one's actions.

Meaning today and context

Sitting idle while inwardly plotting, comparing and resenting is still busy-ness. Without the 'I' that claims credit and blame, even a full day of work leaves no burden.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one with ego inside acts even when not acting, while for the egoless wise one, nothing is done or left undone.

Sometimes the best work and the deepest stillness come when we are not trying to produce them. Effort without strain is a real possibility.

tattvaṃ yathārthamākarṇya mandaḥ prāpnoti mūḍhatām | atha vāyāti saṅkocamamūḍhaḥ ko'pi mūḍhavat ||

Hearing the truth as it is, a dull person becomes bewildered; or else some rare one who is not deluded draws inward and seems like one who is dull.

Meaning today and context

The same truth can confuse one person and settle another. Someone who has gone quiet after deep understanding may look slow from outside.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says a dull person who hears the truth as it is becomes bewildered, while a rare clear one may draw inward and look like a dull person.

Concentration and restraint are practised intensely by the deluded. The wise, established in their own state as if asleep, see nothing that has to be done.

The verse speaks of the goal, not against useful practice; meditation, therapy or treatment that helps someone should not be dropped because of it.

Meaning today and context

Straining hard to become calm can keep you tense. There is a calm that is your natural state, found by resting rather than by forcing.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the deluded strenuously practise concentration and restraint, while the wise, settled in their own state like one asleep, see nothing to be done.

18.34 Ashtavakra to Janaka

aprayatnātprayatnādvā mūḍho nāpnoti nirvṛtim | tattvaniścayamātreṇa prājño bhavati nirvṛtaḥ ||

Meaning today and context

Neither trying harder nor giving up brings peace if the underlying misunderstanding stays. Clarity about what you are is what changes things.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the deluded do not find peace by effort or by its absence, while the wise become content simply by being certain of the truth.

18.35 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Technique can become a way of chasing what is already present. The verse reminds us that the Self is not something manufactured by method.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says those devoted to practice do not know the Self: pure, awake, beloved, complete, beyond the world's spread, untroubled.

18.36 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nāpnoti karmaṇā mokṣaṃ vimūḍho'bhyāsarūpiṇā | dhanyo vijñānamātreṇa muktastiṣṭhatyavikriyaḥ ||

Meaning today and context

Repetition alone does not produce insight. What matters is actually seeing, and that can happen in a moment.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the deluded one does not gain liberation through action in the form of practice; the blessed one, by understanding alone, stands free and unchanging.

mūḍho nāpnoti tadbrahma yato bhavitumicchati | anicchannapi dhīro hi parabrahmasvarūpabhāk ||

The deluded one does not attain Brahman, because he wishes to become it. The wise one, even without wishing, partakes of the nature of the supreme Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Wanting to become something keeps you separate from it. Peace often comes not when we grab for it, but when we stop grabbing.

Meaning today and context

Restless grasping keeps a cycle of worry and wanting alive. Seeing it clearly is how the root is cut, rather than lopping off branches one by one.

na śāntiṃ labhate mūḍho yataḥ śamitumicchati | dhīrastattvaṃ viniścitya sarvadā śāntamānasaḥ ||

The deluded one does not find peace, because he wants to make himself peaceful. The wise one, having ascertained the truth, is always tranquil in mind.

If anxiety is severe or constant, seek support from a doctor or counsellor (Tele-MANAS 14416); the verse does not replace care.

Meaning today and context

Trying anxiously to be calm is itself a form of agitation. Peace grows from understanding, not from fighting the restlessness.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the deluded one does not find peace because he is trying to become peaceful, while the wise one, certain of the truth, is always at peace.

kvātmano darśanaṃ tasya yaddṛṣṭamavalambate | dhīrāstaṃ taṃ na paśyanti paśyantyātmānamavyayam ||

How can one who clings to what is seen have sight of the Self? The wise do not see this and that; they see the imperishable Self.

Meaning today and context

If we look for ourselves only in roles, looks and possessions, we keep missing the one who is looking. Turning attention to that awareness is a different kind of seeing.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one who leans on what is seen cannot see the Self, while the wise do not see 'this and that' but see the imperishable Self.

Where is mental stillness for the deluded one who forces it? For the wise one who rests in the Self alone, it is always natural and unforced.

Meaning today and context

A mind held down by force springs back. Stillness that comes from contentment does not need to be guarded.

Someone imagines that things exist; another imagines that nothing exists. Rare is the one who imagines neither, and so remains untroubled.

Meaning today and context

Arguing over big positions can become another source of agitation. Not needing to win the argument leaves the mind at ease.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says some hold that things exist, others that nothing exists; rare is one who holds neither, and so stays untroubled.

Meaning today and context

Imagining the Self as an idea to concentrate on is not the same as knowing it. Treating it as an object keeps it at a distance.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the dull-minded meditate on the pure non-dual Self, but through delusion never know it and remain unfulfilled all their lives.

For addiction or compulsive habits, avoiding triggers and getting professional help are wise; the verse does not argue against them.

Meaning today and context

Running from temptation into strict control is understandable. But hiding is a sign that we still feel threatened; it is a stage, not the destination.

Meaning today and context

When craving is gone, temptations lose their power; the same things may still be around, but they now serve you instead of ruling you.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says that on seeing the desireless lion, the elephants of sense objects quietly flee, or, unable to, serve him with flattery.

18.47 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na muktikārikāṃ dhatte niḥśaṅko yuktamānasaḥ | paśyañchṛṇvanspṛśañjighrannaśnannāste yathāsukham ||

Free of doubt, his mind integrated, he does not cling to any means of liberation. Seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, he lives at ease.

Meaning today and context

Ordinary life lived with a settled mind can itself be free. There is no need to keep a set of rules like a charm against bondage.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the one free of doubt, whose mind is settled, does not hold on to methods for liberation; seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and eating, he lives at ease.

vastuśravaṇamātreṇa śuddhabuddhirnirākulaḥ | naivācāramanācāramaudāsyaṃ vā prapaśyati ||

Purified in understanding merely by hearing of the Real and untroubled, he sees neither right conduct, nor wrong conduct, nor indifference.

Describes the inner freedom of one already free of ego; it is not a licence to drop ethics, harm anyone or ignore the consequences of one's actions.

Meaning today and context

For a free person, goodness is no longer a matter of anxious rule-keeping; it flows naturally. This describes that freedom, not permission for harm.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says one whose understanding is purified by simply hearing the truth, and who is untroubled, sees neither proper conduct, nor its lack, nor indifference.

18.49 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yadā yatkartumāyāti tadā tatkurute ṛjuḥ | śubhaṃ vāpyaśubhaṃ vāpi tasya ceṣṭā hi bālavat ||

Whatever comes to be done, the straightforward one does it then; whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, his actions are like a child's.

Describes the inner freedom of one already free of ego; it is not a licence to drop ethics, harm anyone or ignore the consequences of one's actions.

Meaning today and context

A child acts without calculating its image. Doing what the moment needs without scheming or second-guessing has its own freshness.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he says the straightforward one does whatever comes to be done, good or bad, and his conduct is like a child's.

18.50 Ashtavakra to Janaka

svātantryātsukhamāpnoti svātantryāllabhate param | svātantryānnirvṛtiṃ gacchetsvātantryātparamaṃ padam ||

Through freedom one attains happiness; through freedom one reaches the highest; through freedom one comes to peace; through freedom, the supreme state.

Inner freedom does not mean cutting off people or ignoring those who depend on us.

Meaning today and context

Freedom here means not depending on things, people or outcomes for one's peace. That inner independence is what makes happiness lasting.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka in the final chapter on peace (shanti): he praises inner freedom: through it one gains happiness, the highest, final peace and the supreme state.

akartṛtvamabhoktṛtvaṃ svātmano manyate yadā | tadā kṣīṇā bhavantyeva samastāścittavṛttayaḥ ||

When a person knows his own Self to be neither the doer nor the enjoyer, then all the movements of his mind wear away.

Meaning today and context

Much of our mental noise is a story of 'I did this, I must get that'. When you see that awareness itself is not the one scrambling and grabbing, that noise loses its grip, even while you keep living and working.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the mind's restless movements end once one sees the Self as neither doer nor enjoyer.

18.52 Ashtavakra to Janaka

ucchṛṅkhalāpyakṛtikā sthitirdhīrasya rājate | na tu saspṛhacittasya śāntirmūḍhasya kṛtrimā ||

The way of the wise shines, free and unrestrained yet wholly uncontrived; not so the artificial calm of the deluded, whose mind is still full of craving.

Meaning today and context

Calm that is acted out while desire churns underneath is a performance, and it tires you. Real peace is natural; it does not need to look serene.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, contrasts the natural freedom of the wise with the forced, artificial calm of one still full of desire.

18.53 Ashtavakra to Janaka

vilasanti mahābhogairviśanti girigahvarān | nirastakalpanā dhīrā abaddhā muktabuddhayaḥ ||

The wise, their mental constructs cast off, unbound and free in understanding, may revel in great enjoyments or may enter mountain caves.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not a particular lifestyle. You can be bound in a cave and free in a palace; what matters is whether the mind is caught in its own ideas.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that the free can live in luxury or in mountain caves alike, since their freedom does not depend on circumstances.

18.54 Ashtavakra to Janaka

śrotriyaṃ devatāṃ tīrthamaṅganāṃ bhūpatiṃ priyam | dṛṣṭvā sampūjya dhīrasya na kāpi hṛdi vāsanā ||

Seeing and honouring a learned priest, a deity, a holy place, a woman, a king or a beloved, the wise one has no craving at all in his heart.

Meaning today and context

You can respect and enjoy people, places and power without needing anything from them. Honour without hunger keeps relationships clean.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that the wise meet and honour people and things others crave or revere, yet no desire stirs in them.

18.55 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhṛtyaiḥ putraiḥ kalatraiśca dauhitraiścāpi gotrajaiḥ | vihasya dhikkṛto yogī na yāti vikṛtiṃ manāk ||

Even when laughed at and scorned by servants, sons, wives, grandsons and kinsmen, the yogi is not disturbed in the slightest.

Not being shaken by insult is inner steadiness, not a reason to stay in mistreatment or abuse. If you are being harmed at home, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

The sharpest insults often come from family. Steadiness here means your sense of who you are does not hang on their approval; you can still respond, set limits, or walk away.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the yogi is not disturbed in the least even when mocked and scorned by his own household and relatives.

18.56 Ashtavakra to Janaka

santuṣṭo'pi na santuṣṭaḥ khinno'pi na ca khidyate | tasyāścaryadaśāṃ tāṃ tāṃ tādṛśā eva jānate ||

Though pleased, he is not pleased; though pained, he is not pained. Only those like him know that wondrous state of his.

Meaning today and context

Joy and pain still come, but they pass through without taking over. This is hard to explain to someone who has not tasted it.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the wise one is pleased yet not pleased, pained yet not pained, a wondrous state only the like-minded understand.

18.57 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kartavyataiva saṃsāro na tāṃ paśyanti sūrayaḥ | śūnyākārā nirākārā nirvikārā nirāmayāḥ ||

The very sense of 'something must be done' is saṃsāra. The wise do not see it; they are like the void, formless, changeless and untainted.

Seeing through the compulsion of 'must-do' is not permission to neglect real responsibilities to family, work or health. The teaching is about the inner burden, not the tasks themselves.

Meaning today and context

The endless to-do list in the head, the feeling that you are never allowed to rest, is itself the trap. Tasks still get done, but without that inner compulsion life feels lighter.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the feeling that one must always be doing something is itself bondage, and the wise do not see it.

18.58 Ashtavakra to Janaka

akurvannapi saṃkṣobhādvyagraḥ sarvatra mūḍhadhīḥ | kurvannapi tu kṛtyāni kuśalo hi nirākulaḥ ||

The deluded one, even doing nothing, is restless everywhere from inner agitation; the skilful one, even while doing all his work, stays untroubled.

Meaning today and context

Stress is not measured by how much you do. You can be frantic on a holiday and calm on a deadline; the difference is inside.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the deluded are agitated even when idle, while the skilful remain untroubled even while busy.

18.59 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sukhamāste sukhaṃ śete sukhamāyāti yāti ca | sukhaṃ vakti sukhaṃ bhuṅkte vyavahāre'pi śāntadhīḥ ||

Happily he sits, happily he sleeps, happily he comes and goes, happily he speaks, happily he eats: the one whose mind is at peace, even in the business of daily life.

Meaning today and context

Peace is not found only on a meditation cushion. It shows in how you eat, talk, travel and sleep on an ordinary day.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, describes the ease of one whose mind is at peace, in every ordinary activity.

18.60 Ashtavakra to Janaka

svabhāvādyasya naivārtirlokavadvyavahāriṇaḥ | mahāhrada ivākṣobhyo gatakleśaḥ suśobhate ||

He who by his very nature feels no distress, though he deals with the world like anyone else, shines free of affliction, unshakeable like a great lake.

Meaning today and context

You do not have to look different from others to be free. A deep lake has ripples on top but stays still beneath.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the wise one lives and deals with people like everyone else yet feels no inner distress, like a deep, unshaken lake.

18.61 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nivṛttirapi mūḍhasya pravṛttirupajāyate | pravṛttirapi dhīrasya nivṛttiphalabhāginī ||

Even the withdrawal of the deluded turns into activity; even the activity of the wise bears the fruit of withdrawal.

Meaning today and context

Dropping out does not free you if the mind keeps grasping; you just get busy with renouncing. Acting fully without grasping can be the real letting go.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that for the deluded even renunciation becomes a kind of activity, while for the wise even activity bears the fruit of renunciation.

18.62 Ashtavakra to Janaka

parigraheṣu vairāgyaṃ prāyo mūḍhasya dṛśyate | dehe vigalitāśasya kva rāgaḥ kva virāgatā ||

Dispassion toward possessions is mostly seen in the deluded. For one whose hopes in the body have melted away, where is attachment, where is detachment?

Meaning today and context

Loudly rejecting things can be another way of being tied to them. When you stop building your identity on the body and what it owns, there is nothing to cling to or push away.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the deluded make a show of dispassion toward possessions, while for one who no longer pins hopes on the body, attachment and non-attachment both fall away.

18.63 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhāvanābhāvanāsaktā dṛṣṭirmūḍhasya sarvadā | bhāvyabhāvanayā sā tu svasthasyādṛṣṭirūpiṇī ||

The outlook of the deluded is always caught up in meditating or not meditating; but for one at rest in himself, that outlook, even as he contemplates what is to be contemplated, is of the nature of no-outlook.

Meaning today and context

Worrying about whether you meditated enough, or rightly, can become its own trap. For someone settled, practice is not a project with a scorecard.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the deluded are always caught up in meditating or not meditating, while for one at rest in the Self even contemplation is a kind of not-seeing.

18.64 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sarvārambheṣu niṣkāmo yaścaredbālavanmuniḥ | na lepastasya śuddhasya kriyamāṇe'pi karmaṇi ||

The sage who moves like a child, free of desire in all his undertakings, is pure; no stain clings to him even in the work being done.

Meaning today and context

A child plays fully without carrying the game around afterwards. Working with that freshness, without anxious scheming, leaves no residue of stress or guilt.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the sage who acts like a child, without desire in any undertaking, is untouched by the work he does.

18.65 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sa eva dhanya ātmajñaḥ sarvabhāveṣu yaḥ samaḥ | paśyanśṛṇvanspṛśanjighrannaśnannistarṣamānasaḥ ||

Blessed indeed is that knower of the Self who is the same in every state, whose mind is free of thirst while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and eating.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not closing the senses but enjoying what comes without a desperate thirst for more. You can taste food fully without being ruled by cravings.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, praises the knower of the Self who stays even in all states and is free of thirst while using all the senses.

18.66 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kva saṃsāraḥ kva cābhāsaḥ kva sādhyaṃ kva ca sādhanam | ākāśasyeva dhīrasya nirvikalpasya sarvadā ||

Where is saṃsāra, where is mere appearance, where is the goal, where the means, for the wise one who, like space, is ever free of mental constructs?

Meaning today and context

Much spiritual struggle is a chase from means to goal. Seen from awareness itself, which is open like the sky, there is nothing to reach; this can ease the strain of constant self-improvement.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks rhetorically what world, appearance, goal or means can exist for the wise one who, like space, is ever free of mental constructs.

18.67 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sa jayatyarthasaṃnyāsī pūrṇasvarasavigrahaḥ | akṛtrimo'navacchinne samādhiryasya vartate ||

Victorious is he who has renounced all aims, the very embodiment of his own full delight, whose unforced samādhi rests in the unbounded.

Meaning today and context

When you stop needing life to deliver some outcome, a quiet fullness can show itself. That ease is natural, not a forced trance.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, praises the one who has given up all aims, is full of his own nature, and whose natural absorption never breaks.

18.68 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bahunātra kimuktena jñātatattvo mahāśayaḥ | bhogamokṣanirākāṅkṣī sadā sarvatra nīrasaḥ ||

What use is saying more? The great-souled one who knows the truth longs neither for enjoyment nor for liberation, and is always and everywhere without relish for anything.

Meaning today and context

Even the wish to be liberated can be one more craving. Real freedom is not wanting a better version of yourself or your life so badly.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, sums up: the great-souled knower of truth wants neither enjoyment nor liberation and is unattached everywhere.

18.69 Ashtavakra to Janaka

mahadādi jagaddvaitaṃ nāmamātravijṛmbhitam | vihāya śuddhabodhasya kiṃ kṛtyamavaśiṣyate ||

The world of duality, from the great principle (mahat) downward, is only a display of names. Having left it behind, what remains to be done for one who is pure awareness?

Meaning today and context

Many of our worries attach to labels: status, titles, roles. Seeing them as names rather than who you are can quiet the pressure to keep proving something.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the whole world of duality is only an unfolding of names, and for one who is pure awareness nothing is left to do.

18.70 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bhramabhūtamidaṃ sarvaṃ kiṃcinnāstīti niścayī | alakṣyasphuraṇaḥ śuddhaḥ svabhāvenaiva śāmyati ||

Firmly convinced that 'all this is born of error; nothing at all really is', the pure one, whose radiance cannot be pointed to, becomes peaceful by his own nature.

Calling the world an illusion is a teaching about identity, not a reason to stop caring for your body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

This is not a claim that your life or people do not matter. It points out that the dramas that torment us are often built from misreading; seeing that, peace comes without effort.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that one firmly convinced that all this is a mistaken appearance becomes peaceful by his very nature.

18.71 Ashtavakra to Janaka

śuddhasphuraṇarūpasya dṛśyabhāvamapaśyataḥ | kva vidhiḥ kva ca vairāgyaṃ kva tyāgaḥ kva śamo'pi vā ||

For one whose nature is pure radiance, who does not see the objective world as real, where is injunction, where dispassion, where renunciation, or even calm?

Meaning today and context

Disciplines are a raft, not the shore. They help while we need them; the point is not to cling to being a 'disciplined spiritual person'.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks what rules, dispassion, renunciation or calm mean for one who is pure radiance and does not see objects as real.

18.72 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sphurato'nantarūpeṇa prakṛtiṃ ca na paśyataḥ | kva bandhaḥ kva ca vā mokṣaḥ kva harṣaḥ kva viṣāditā ||

For one who shines as the infinite and does not see prakṛti (nature) at all, where is bondage, where liberation, where elation, where dejection?

Meaning today and context

Up and down moods belong to the changing world of body and mind. Recognising yourself as the awareness in which they come and go takes away some of their power.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks where bondage and liberation, joy and sorrow can be for one who shines as the infinite and does not see nature as separate.

18.73 Ashtavakra to Janaka

buddhiparyantasaṃsāre māyāmātraṃ vivartate | nirmamo nirahaṅkāro niṣkāmaḥ śobhate budhaḥ ||

In this world, which reaches only as far as the intellect, mere illusion unfolds. Free of 'mine', free of ego, free of desire, the wise one shines.

Meaning today and context

'Mine', 'I' and 'I want' are the three knots that make life heavy. Loosening them does not mean owning nothing; it means not being owned by what you have.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the world that the intellect builds is only illusion unfolding, and the wise shine free of 'mine', ego and desire.

18.74 Ashtavakra to Janaka

akṣayaṃ gatasantāpamātmānaṃ paśyato muneḥ | kva vidyā ca kva vā viśvaṃ kva deho'haṃ mameti vā ||

For the sage who sees the Self as imperishable and beyond all suffering, where is knowledge, where is the universe, where is the body, or 'I' and 'mine'?

Meaning today and context

There is a place in you untouched by what hurts. Resting there, the stories of 'my body, my life, my loss' grip less tightly, though life goes on.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks where knowledge, the world, the body, or 'I' and 'mine' are for the sage who sees the Self as imperishable and free of suffering.

18.75 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nirodhādīni karmāṇi jahāti jaḍadhīryadi | manorathānpralāpāṃśca kartumāpnotyatatkṣaṇāt ||

If a dull-minded person gives up practices such as restraining the mind, he immediately takes to daydreams and idle chatter.

Meaning today and context

Hearing that 'practice is not needed' is risky if you are not ready. Dropping discipline too early usually means the mind simply fills with fantasies and chatter again.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, warns that if a dull-minded person simply drops disciplines like controlling the mind, he at once slips into fantasies and idle talk.

18.76 Ashtavakra to Janaka

mandaḥ śrutvāpi tadvastu na jahāti vimūḍhatām | nirvikalpo bahiryatnādantarviṣayalālasaḥ ||

The dull one, even after hearing that reality, does not give up his delusion. By outward effort he appears free of thought, but inside he still hankers after sense pleasures.

Meaning today and context

You can look calm and spiritual while cravings run the show inside. Honesty about what is still pulling at you matters more than appearing detached.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the dull one hears the truth yet keeps his delusion: outwardly free of thoughts by effort, inwardly hungry for sense objects.

18.77 Ashtavakra to Janaka

jñānādgalitakarmā yo lokadṛṣṭyāpi karmakṛt | nāpnotyavasaraṃ kartuṃ vaktumeva na kiṃcana ||

He whose actions have fallen away through knowledge, though in the eyes of the world he still acts, finds no occasion to do or even to say anything.

Meaning today and context

From outside, a free person may look as busy as anyone. Inside there is no 'doer' pushing to act or prove a point.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that one whose actions have dropped away through knowledge, though seen by others to act, finds no occasion to do or say anything as his own.

18.78 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kva tamaḥ kva prakāśo vā hānaṃ kva ca na kiṃcana | nirvikārasya dhīrasya nirātaṅkasya sarvadā ||

Where is darkness, where light, where loss? There is nothing at all for the wise one who is ever changeless and free of fear.

Meaning today and context

Awareness is not dimmed by dark times or brightened by good ones. Remembering this can give a quiet steadiness when fear rises.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks where darkness, light or loss can be for the wise one who is ever changeless and fearless.

18.79 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kva dhairyaṃ kva vivekitvaṃ kva nirātaṅkatāpi vā | anirvācyasvabhāvasya niḥsvabhāvasya yoginaḥ ||

Where is fortitude, where discernment, where even fearlessness, for the yogi whose nature cannot be described and who has no separate nature at all?

Meaning today and context

Even good qualities can become a self-image to protect. At the deepest level you are not your virtues or your faults.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that for the yogi whose nature is beyond words, even virtues like fortitude, discernment and fearlessness have no place.

18.80 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na svargo naiva narako jīvanmuktirna caiva hi | bahunātra kimuktena yogadṛṣṭyā na kiṃcana ||

There is no heaven, no hell, not even liberation while living. What use saying more? In the vision of yoga, there is nothing at all.

Meaning today and context

Fear of punishment and hope of reward keep many people anxious about the spiritual life. This verse sets awareness beyond both; it can free you from spiritual fear.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that in the yogic vision there is neither heaven nor hell, nor even liberation while living.

18.81 Ashtavakra to Janaka

naiva prārthayate lābhaṃ nālābhenānuśocati | dhīrasya śītalaṃ cittamamṛtenaiva pūritam ||

He neither prays for gain nor grieves over loss. The cool mind of the wise one is filled as if with nectar.

Meaning today and context

Most stress comes from chasing gains and mourning losses. A mind that does not swing with profit and loss stays cool and nourished from within.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the wise neither beg for gain nor grieve at loss; their mind stays cool, as if filled with nectar.

18.82 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na śāntaṃ stauti niṣkāmo na duṣṭamapi nindati | samaduḥkhasukhastṛptaḥ kiṃcitkṛtyaṃ na paśyati ||

Free of desire, he neither praises the peaceful nor blames even the wicked. Even in sorrow and joy, content, he sees nothing that he must do.

Not condemning the wicked is about one's inner state, not about ignoring harm or injustice. Wrongdoing should still be faced and reported where needed.

Meaning today and context

Constant judging, of saints and sinners alike, keeps the mind busy and agitated. Dropping the habit of verdicts brings contentment, though you can still act wisely.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the desireless one neither praises the good nor blames the wicked, is even in joy and sorrow, and sees nothing he must do.

18.83 Ashtavakra to Janaka

The wise one neither hates saṃsāra nor longs to see the Self. Free of elation and resentment, he is neither dead nor alive.

This is about freedom from fear, not indifference to life. If you are thinking about death or feel life is not worth living, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Hating the world and craving enlightenment are both forms of struggle. Freedom here means living without fighting life or grasping at something beyond it.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the wise neither hate the world nor crave to see the Self; free of elation and resentment, they are neither dead nor alive in the usual sense.

18.84 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Without clinging affection for son, wife and the rest, without desire for sense objects, free of worry even about his own body, free of expectation, the wise one shines.

This is not advice to stop loving or caring for family, or to neglect your own health. It speaks of possessive clinging and anxious worry, not of responsibility or affection.

Meaning today and context

Love without possessiveness is lighter for everyone. You can care deeply for family and health without the anxious clinging that makes love heavy.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the wise one shines without clinging to children and spouse, without desire for objects, without worry even for his own body.

18.85 Ashtavakra to Janaka

The wise one is content everywhere, living on whatever chance brings, wandering freely through the lands, lying down wherever the sun sets.

This describes inner detachment, not a call to leave family, work or home. For most people it means holding roles and possessions lightly while still caring for them.

Meaning today and context

Contentment does not need ideal conditions. Accepting what each day brings, rather than demanding a fixed plan, can free you from much frustration.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, describes the contentment of the wise who live on whatever comes, wandering freely and sleeping wherever evening finds them.

18.86 Ashtavakra to Janaka

patatūdetu vā deho nāsya cintā mahātmanaḥ | svabhāvabhūmiviśrāntivismṛtāśeṣasaṃsṛteḥ ||

Let the body fall or let it rise, the great soul has no concern about it, for resting on the ground of his own nature he has forgotten all of worldly existence.

Not caring whether the body lives or dies describes freedom from fear, not a wish to die or a reason to neglect health or treatment. If you are thinking about ending your life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Fear of death loosens when you know yourself as more than the body. This is a teaching about identity and fear, not about neglecting health.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says the great soul, resting in his own nature, has forgotten all of saṃsāra and does not care whether the body lives or dies.

Meaning today and context

Joy does not have to depend on having, or on certainty about everything. Being at peace on your own, without needing things or answers, is a deep freedom.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, describes the wise one who owns nothing, moves freely, is beyond opposites and doubt, unattached, and delights alone in himself.

nirmamaḥ śobhate dhīraḥ samaloṣṭāśmakāñcanaḥ | subhinnahṛdayagranthirvinirdhūtarajastamaḥ ||

Free of 'mine', the wise one shines: a clod, a stone and gold are the same to him, the knot of his heart is cut through, and restlessness and dullness are shaken off.

Meaning today and context

When gold no longer feels like your worth, money becomes a tool rather than a master. Inner knots of fear and possession are what really bind.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, describes the wise one, free of 'mine', to whom clod, stone and gold are the same, the knot of the heart cut, restlessness and dullness shaken off.

sarvatrānavadhānasya na kiṃcidvāsanā hṛdi | muktātmano vitṛptasya tulanā kena jāyate ||

For one who fixes his attention nowhere, with no trace of desire in his heart, liberated and wholly content, with whom can he be compared?

Meaning today and context

Comparison feeds on wanting what others have. A heart without lingering desire has nothing to compare, and so it rests.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks with whom one could compare the liberated one who fixes on nothing, has no lingering desire, and is wholly content.

18.90 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Knowing, he does not know; seeing, he does not see; speaking, he does not speak. Who could this be but one free of latent desires?

Meaning today and context

It is possible to do things without a 'me' grabbing credit or ownership. Actions flow, but there is no inner claim on them.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says only one free of latent desire can know without 'knowing', see without 'seeing', speak without 'speaking'.

18.91 Ashtavakra to Janaka

Whether beggar or king, he shines who is free of desire, whose notions of things as attractive or repulsive have melted away.

Meaning today and context

Your worth is not your position. Rich or poor, boss or worker, inner freedom from craving and fixed likes and dislikes is what makes a person shine.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, says that beggar or king, the desireless one shines, whose fixed notions of good and bad about things have dropped away.

Meaning today and context

A truly simple and honest person does not need to swing between indulgence and self-control, or argue about philosophy. Straightforwardness itself becomes the path.

Ashtavakra, continuing his final teaching to Janaka on the person of steady wisdom, asks where licence, restraint or even settled conclusions about truth can be for the yogi who has become guileless and has fulfilled life's purpose.
