Chapter 17

17.1 Ashtavakra to Janaka

tena jñānaphalaṃ prāptaṃ yogābhyāsaphalaṃ tathā | tṛptaḥ svacchendriyo nityamekākī ramate tu yaḥ ||

He has gained the fruit of knowledge and the fruit of the practice of yoga who, contented and with purified senses, always delights in his own solitude.

Delight in solitude is not isolation. If loneliness is painful or you feel cut off, reaching out to people matters; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The proof of inner work is not knowledge or technique but contentment: being at ease with yourself without needing constant stimulation.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): he who is content, with clear senses, and delights in being alone has reached the fruit of knowledge and of yoga.

17.2 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na kadācijjagatyasmiṃstattvajño hanta khidyati | yata ekena tenedaṃ pūrṇaṃ brahmāṇḍamaṇḍalam ||

Ah, the knower of truth is never distressed in this world, for this entire sphere of the universe is filled by him alone.

Meaning today and context

When you feel yourself as part of the whole, not a lonely fragment against the world, much of the daily distress loses its grip.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the knower of truth is never distressed in this world, because the whole universe is filled by him alone.

17.3 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na jātu viṣayāḥ ke'pi svārāmaṃ harṣayantyamī | sallakīpallavaprītamivebhaṃ nimbapallavāḥ ||

No sense objects ever thrill one who delights in the Self, just as neem leaves do not please an elephant that loves sallakī leaves.

Meaning today and context

Once you have tasted something deeper, lesser pleasures lose their pull naturally, without force. A richer inner life makes many cravings simply bitter.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): with an image of an elephant, he says sense objects never delight one who rejoices in the Self.

17.4 Ashtavakra to Janaka

yastu bhogeṣu bhukteṣu na bhavatyadhivāsitaḥ | abhukteṣu nirākāṅkṣī tādṛśo bhavadurlabhaḥ ||

One who is not left coloured by the pleasures he has enjoyed, and has no longing for those he has not, is hard to find in the world.

Meaning today and context

Most of us replay past pleasures and chase new ones. Being able to enjoy something and let it go, and not pine for what we missed, is a rare freedom.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): one who is not left with lingering impressions from pleasures enjoyed, and does not long for those not enjoyed, is rare in the world.

17.5 Ashtavakra to Janaka

bubhukṣuriha saṃsāre mumukṣurapi dṛśyate | bhogamokṣanirākāṅkṣī viralo hi mahāśayaḥ ||

In this world one sees those who seek enjoyment and also those who seek liberation; rare indeed is the great-hearted one who longs for neither enjoyment nor liberation.

Meaning today and context

Even the wish to be free can become one more ambition. The deepest ease is when there is nothing left to chase, worldly or spiritual.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): in this world one sees people who want enjoyment and people who want liberation; rare is the great soul who wants neither.

17.6 Ashtavakra to Janaka

dharmārthakāmamokṣeṣu jīvite maraṇe tathā | kasyāpyudāracittasya heyopādeyatā na hi ||

Among duty, wealth, pleasure and liberation, and likewise in life and in death, only some large-hearted person has no sense of 'this to reject, that to accept'.

Equanimity toward life and death is not a reason to neglect health or to wish to die. If you are thinking about ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is a picture of a heart so wide that it does not cling to any outcome, even living longer. It is an ideal of inner openness, not indifference to one's own life or others'.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): for a rare large-hearted person, there is nothing to reject or accept among the aims of life, or in life and death.

17.7 Ashtavakra to Janaka

vāñchā na viśvavilaye na dveṣastasya ca sthitau | yathā jīvikayā tasmāddhanya āste yathā sukhaṃ ||

He has no wish for the dissolution of the universe and no aversion to its continuing. Therefore the blessed one lives happily on whatever livelihood comes his way.

Meaning today and context

Not wishing the world were different, nor resenting it as it is, frees a great deal of energy. One can then live simply and gladly on what life brings.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the free person has no wish for the world to end and no aversion to its continuing, so he lives at ease on whatever livelihood comes.

17.8 Ashtavakra to Janaka

kṛtārtho'nena jñānenetyevaṃ galitadhīḥ kṛtī | paśyanśṛṇvanspṛśanjighrannaśnannāste yathā sukhaṃ ||

Fulfilled by this knowledge, with his reasoning mind dissolved, the accomplished one lives happily, seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating.

Meaning today and context

Freedom does not mean stepping out of ordinary life. It is living the same everyday acts, eating, listening, walking, without the constant inner commentary.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the accomplished one, fulfilled by this knowledge and with his thinking mind dissolved, lives at ease while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and eating.

17.9 Ashtavakra to Janaka

śūnyā dṛṣṭirvṛthā ceṣṭā vikalānīndriyāṇi ca | na spṛhā na viraktirvā kṣīṇasaṃsārasāgare ||

For one in whom the ocean of worldly existence has run dry, the gaze is empty, activity is without purpose, the senses are idle; there is neither longing nor aversion.

A blank gaze, purposeless action and dulled senses can also be signs of depression or dissociation, which are not liberation. If you feel numb or empty, please seek help; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This describes a mind no longer grasping at anything through the senses. It is meant as deep freedom, not as numbness or withdrawal from life.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): for one whose ocean of worldly life has dried up, the gaze is empty, action purposeless, the senses inactive, and there is neither craving nor aversion.

17.10 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na jāgarti na nidrāti nonmīlati na mīlati | aho paradaśā kvāpi vartate muktacetasaḥ ||

He is neither awake nor asleep; he neither opens nor closes his eyes. Ah, the liberated mind abides in some supreme state, wherever it may be.

Meaning today and context

Ordinary states like waking and sleeping come and go, but there is an awareness that is not one of them. The verse points to that, beyond our usual categories.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the liberated mind is neither awake nor asleep, neither opening nor closing its eyes; its state is beyond description.

17.11 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sarvatra dṛśyate svasthaḥ sarvatra vimalāśayaḥ | samastavāsanā mukto muktaḥ sarvatra rājate ||

Everywhere he is seen at ease in himself, everywhere pure in heart. Freed from all latent tendencies, the liberated one shines in every situation.

Meaning today and context

Inner freedom shows as steadiness in every setting, at home, at work, in trouble. It is the same person everywhere, without hidden agendas.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the liberated one appears at ease and pure-hearted everywhere, free of all latent tendencies, shining in every situation.

17.12 Ashtavakra to Janaka

paśyanśṛṇvanspṛśanjighrannaśnangṛhṇanvadanvrajan | īhitānīhitairmukto mukta eva mahāśayaḥ ||

Seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, taking, speaking, walking, the great-souled one, free from what is wished for and what is not, is truly liberated.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is found within ordinary activity, not by stopping it. You can do everything you normally do without being pushed and pulled by liking and disliking.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the great-souled one, while seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, taking, speaking and walking, is free from wanting and not wanting.

17.13 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na nindati na ca stauti na hṛṣyati na kupyati | na dadāti na gṛhṇāti muktaḥ sarvatra nīrasaḥ ||

He neither blames nor praises, neither rejoices nor grows angry, neither gives nor takes. The liberated one is without relish for anything, anywhere.

'Neither gives nor takes' describes freedom from attachment to giving and receiving, not a reason to stop helping others or caring for those who depend on you.

Meaning today and context

Much of our energy goes into judging, praising, getting excited and getting angry. A settled mind lets things be without needing to react to each one.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the liberated one neither blames nor praises, neither rejoices nor gets angry, neither gives nor takes; he is free of relish everywhere.

17.14 Ashtavakra to Janaka

sānurāgāṃ striyaṃ dṛṣṭvā mṛtyuṃ vā samupasthitam | avihvalamanāḥ svastho mukta eva mahāśayaḥ ||

Seeing a woman full of passion, or death drawing near, the great-souled one remains unperturbed in mind and at ease in himself; he is truly liberated.

Written from a renunciate male viewpoint of its time; the point is one's own craving, and it must never be used to blame, demean or control women. Calm before death is not a wish to die; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse picks the two strongest pulls on a person, desire and the fear of death, and says the free mind is steady before both.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): whether he sees a woman full of desire for him or death standing before him, the great-souled one stays unshaken and at ease.

17.15 Ashtavakra to Janaka

In pleasure and in pain, in man and in woman, in prosperity and in adversity, the steady one, seeing the same everywhere, finds no difference at all.

Meaning today and context

Equanimity means not being thrown by good times or bad, and seeing every person as essentially the same, beyond labels.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the steady one sees evenly everywhere and makes no distinction between pleasure and pain, man and woman, prosperity and adversity.

17.16 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na hiṃsā naiva kāruṇyaṃ nauddhatyaṃ na ca dīnatā | nāścaryaṃ naiva ca kṣobhaḥ kṣīṇasaṃsaraṇe nare ||

In the person whose worldly wandering has ended there is no violence and no pity, no arrogance and no humility, no amazement and no agitation.

'No pity' means freedom from emotional swings, not a reason to stop being kind or caring. Compassion and helping others remain good.

Meaning today and context

The verse describes a mind no longer swinging between emotional extremes. It is about inner stillness, not about becoming cold toward people.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): in one whose worldly wandering has ended, there is no violence and no pity, no arrogance and no meekness, no wonder and no agitation.

17.17 Ashtavakra to Janaka

na mukto viṣayadveṣṭā na vā viṣayalolupaḥ | asaṃsaktamanā nityaṃ prāptāprāptamupāśnute ||

The liberated one neither hates sense objects nor is greedy for them. With a mind ever unattached, he accepts both what has come and what has not.

Meaning today and context

Neither fighting desire nor feeding it, you can accept what life gives and what it withholds. That acceptance is a quiet kind of freedom.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): the liberated one neither hates sense objects nor craves them; with an unattached mind he takes what comes and what does not.

17.18 Ashtavakra to Janaka

samādhānāsamādhānahitāhitavikalpanāḥ | śūnyacitto na jānāti kaivalyamiva saṃsthitaḥ ||

The one whose mind is empty does not know the notions of concentration and distraction, of good and harm; he abides as if in absolute aloneness.

Not knowing 'good and harm' refers to inner meditative stillness, not to dropping ordinary judgement about safety, health or right and wrong in daily life.

Meaning today and context

Worrying whether your meditation is 'going well' is itself a distraction. At its deepest, the mind stops grading its own state.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): one with an empty mind does not know the distinctions of concentration and distraction, good and bad; he abides as if in aloneness (kaivalya).

17.19 Ashtavakra to Janaka

nirmamo nirahaṃkāro na kiṃciditi niścitaḥ | antargalitasarvāśaḥ kurvannapi karoti na ||

Free of 'mine', free of ego, convinced that 'nothing is', with all desires melted away within, he does not act even while acting.

Meaning today and context

When work is done without 'this is mine' and 'I am the doer', it stops weighing on you. You still act fully, but without the inner burden.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): free of 'mine' and of ego, certain that nothing is, with all desires dissolved within, he does not act even while acting.

17.20 Ashtavakra to Janaka

manaḥprakāśasammohasvapnajāḍyavivarjitaḥ | daśāṃ kāmapi saṃprāpto bhavedgalitamānasaḥ ||

Free from the mind's display, from delusion, dreaming and dullness, the one whose mind has melted away reaches a state that cannot be named.

Meaning today and context

Beyond racing thoughts, confusion, daydreaming and heaviness lies a clarity that words cannot capture. The verse invites us to sense that there is more to us than the busy mind.

Ashtavakra teaches Janaka (chapter 17, the knower of truth): he closes the chapter: one whose mind has dissolved, free of mental display, delusion, dreaming and dullness, reaches an indescribable state.
