Chapter 20

20.1 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva bhūtāni kva deho vā kvendriyāṇi kva vā manaḥ | kva śūnyaṃ kva ca nairāśyaṃ matsvarūpe nirañjane ||

Where are the elements, where the body, where the senses, where the mind? Where is emptiness, and where despair, in my own stainless nature?

'Not the body' is about identity, not about neglecting the body or health. If you feel empty or hopeless, please talk to someone you trust or Tele-MANAS (14416).

Meaning today and context

The body, senses and moods are real experiences, but they are not the whole of who you are. Even a feeling of emptiness or hopelessness is something seen, not the seer.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that elements, body, senses and mind, and even emptiness and despair, have no place in his own stainless nature.

20.2 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva śāstraṃ kvātmavijñānaṃ kva vā nirviṣayaṃ manaḥ | kva tṛptiḥ kva vitṛṣṇatvaṃ gatadvandvasya me sadā ||

Where is scripture, where knowledge of the Self, where a mind free of objects? Where is contentment, where freedom from craving, for me who am always beyond the pairs of opposites?

Meaning today and context

Even 'having no desires' can become a new goal to chase. True ease is not winning over craving but no longer being divided between craving and its opposite.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that scripture, self-knowledge, a mind without objects, satisfaction and freedom from craving all belong to the pairs he has gone beyond.

20.3 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva vidyā kva ca vāvidyā kvāhaṃ kvedaṃ mama kva vā | kva bandhaḥ kva ca vā mokṣaḥ svarūpasya kva rūpitā ||

Where is knowledge, where ignorance; where is 'I', where 'this', where 'mine'? Where is bondage, where liberation? How can one's own nature have any form?

Meaning today and context

Much suffering hangs on 'I' and 'mine': my image, my things, my way. Seeing that your deepest nature has no shape to defend makes it easier to hold these lightly.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that knowledge and ignorance, 'I' and 'mine', bondage and liberation do not apply to his own nature, which has no form.

20.4 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva prārabdhāni karmāṇi jīvanmuktirapi kva vā | kva tadvidehakaivalyaṃ nirviśeṣasya sarvadā ||

Where are the actions already set in motion (prārabdha), where is liberation while living, where that liberation at the body's end, for me who am forever without distinguishing marks?

A statement about the Self, not a reason to ignore the consequences of one's actions on others.

Meaning today and context

People often worry about their karma and whether they will ever be free. The verse says the deepest Self is not a thing that carries karma or waits for liberation.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that, being always without distinguishing marks, he has no use for ideas of karma already in motion, liberation while living, or liberation after the body falls.

20.5 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva kartā kva ca vā bhoktā niṣkriyaṃ sphuraṇaṃ kva vā | kvāparokṣaṃ phalaṃ vā kva niḥsvabhāvasya me sadā ||

Where is the doer, where the enjoyer; where is actionlessness, or the shining forth of thought? Where is direct knowing, or any fruit, for me who am ever without a separate nature?

Describes the Self as not the doer; it is not a reason to avoid work, responsibility or owning up to what one has done.

Meaning today and context

When we stop seeing ourselves as the one who must make everything happen and must get its reward, a heavy pressure lifts. Work can continue, without the anxious ownership.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that, having no separate nature of his own, there is no doer, no enjoyer, no actionless shining and no result to be experienced.

20.6 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva lokaḥ kva mumukṣurvā kva yogī jñānavānkva vā | kva baddhaḥ kva ca vā muktaḥ svasvarūpe'hamadvaye ||

Where is the world, where the seeker of liberation; where the yogi, where the man of knowledge; where the bound, where the free, when I am in my own non-dual nature?

Meaning today and context

Spiritual identities can become a new ego: 'I am a seeker', 'I am a yogi', 'I am further along'. The verse drops even these labels.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that, resting in his own non-dual nature, the labels of world, seeker, yogi, knower, bound and free no longer apply.

20.7 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva sṛṣṭiḥ kva ca saṃhāraḥ kva sādhyaṃ kva ca sādhanam | kva sādhakaḥ kva siddhirvā svasvarūpe'hamadvaye ||

Where is creation, where dissolution; where is the goal, where the means; where the practitioner, where attainment, when I am in my own non-dual nature?

Spoken from the end of the path; for most people practice remains helpful. The point is not to drop a practice that helps you.

Meaning today and context

Practice is useful, but treating peace as something far away to be earned can keep it far away. What you seek is not separate from the one seeking.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that creation and dissolution, goal and means, practitioner and attainment have no place in his non-dual nature.

20.8 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva pramātā pramāṇaṃ vā kva prameyaṃ kva ca pramā | kva kiṃcitkva na kiṃcidvā sarvadā vimalasya me ||

Where is the knower, the means of knowing, where the object known, where knowledge itself? Where is something, where nothing, for me who am ever pure?

Meaning today and context

We usually split experience into me, my knowing and the thing known. Underneath that split is a simple awareness that is not divided, and resting there is very quiet.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that knower, means of knowing, the known and knowledge itself, something and nothing, do not exist for him who is always pure.

20.9 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva vikṣepaḥ kva caikāgryaṃ kva nirbodhaḥ kva mūḍhatā | kva harṣaḥ kva viṣādo vā sarvadā niṣkriyasya me ||

Where is distraction, where one-pointedness; where is ignorance, where dullness; where is joy, where sorrow, for me who am ever actionless?

Seeing moods from a steadier place does not replace care. If low moods last or feel overwhelming, please talk to a doctor or Tele-MANAS (14416).

Meaning today and context

Moods swing between scattered and focused, happy and low. You can notice that the one who sees these swings is not swinging, and that gives a steadier footing.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that distraction and concentration, dullness, joy and sorrow do not touch him who is ever actionless.

20.10 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva caiṣa vyavahāro vā kva ca sā paramārthatā | kva sukhaṃ kva ca vā duḥkhaṃ nirvimarśasya me sadā ||

Where is this worldly dealing, and where that supreme truth? Where is happiness, where sorrow, for me who am ever beyond deliberation?

Meaning today and context

We often split life into the spiritual and the practical, and suffer over pleasure and pain. Resting as awareness, neither the split nor the swings rule you.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that ordinary dealings and the highest truth, pleasure and pain, have no hold on him who is ever free of mental deliberation.

20.11 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva māyā kva ca saṃsāraḥ kva prītirviratiḥ kva vā | kva jīvaḥ kva ca tadbrahma sarvadā vimalasya me ||

Where is maya, where the cycle of worldly life; where is attachment, where detachment; where is the individual soul, and where that Brahman, for me who am ever pure?

Meaning today and context

Even detachment can be held as an achievement, and 'I am Brahman' as a new idea to cling to. The verse lets go of both attachment and the effort to be detached.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that maya and samsara, attachment and detachment, the individual soul and Brahman, have no place in his ever-pure nature.

20.12 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva pravṛttirnirvṛttirvā kva muktiḥ kva ca bandhanam | kūṭasthanirvibhāgasya svasthasya mama sarvadā ||

Where is engaging in action, or turning away from it; where is liberation, where bondage, for me who am unchanging, undivided and ever established in myself?

Not advice to withdraw from family, work or responsibilities; for most people this means inner steadiness while engaged.

Meaning today and context

People agonise over whether to engage with the world or withdraw from it. The verse points to a centre that stays the same whether you are busy or quiet.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that activity and withdrawal, liberation and bondage, do not apply to him who is unchanging, undivided and always established in himself.

20.13 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kvopadeśaḥ kva vā śāstraṃ kva śiṣyaḥ kva ca vā guruḥ | kva cāsti puruṣārtho vā nirupādheḥ śivasya me ||

Where is instruction, where scripture; where is the disciple, where the teacher; where is any goal of human life, for me who am without limiting adjuncts, auspicious (Śiva)?

Spoken by a disciple after realisation; it is not a reason for a seeker to reject guidance. Also be wary of anyone claiming to be beyond all rules and teachers while demanding money or obedience.

Meaning today and context

Teachers and teachings point beyond themselves, like a finger to the moon. Their final gift is to leave you resting in what you are, not dependent on them.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra that, as auspicious awareness without limiting conditions, there is no instruction, scripture, disciple, teacher or goal of life for him.

20.14 Janaka to Ashtavakra

kva cāsti kva ca vā nāsti kvāsti caikaṃ kva ca dvayam | bahunātra kimuktena kiṃcinnottiṣṭhate mama ||

Where is 'it is', where 'it is not'; where is one, where two? What use is saying more here? Nothing at all arises for me.

Meaning today and context

The Ashtavakra Gita ends in silence. After all the words, what remains is a quiet in which nothing needs to be argued, proved or added.

In the final chapter, Janaka tells Ashtavakra in the last verse of the text that existence and non-existence, one and two, no longer arise for him, and nothing more need be said.
