Chapter 8

8.1 Dattatreya to the Lord

tvadyātrayā vyāpakatā hatā te dhyānena cetaḥparatā hatā te | stutyā mayā vākparatā hatā te kṣamasva nityaṃ trividhāparādhān ||

By my pilgrimage to you I have denied that you are everywhere; by meditation, that you are beyond the mind; by my praise, that you are beyond words. Forgive me always for these three offences.

Meaning today and context

Every way we approach God or truth falls short of it, and that is all right. Humility in worship means doing it wholeheartedly while knowing the divine is always more than our practices.

Chapter 8 opens with Dattatreya's prayer to the all-pervading Lord, asking forgiveness for three unavoidable 'offences' of worship: going on pilgrimage, meditating, and praising.

8.2 Krishna

kāmairahatadhīrdānto mṛduḥ śucirakiñcanaḥ | anīho mitabhukśāntaḥ sthiro maccharaṇo muniḥ ||

His mind is not struck down by desires; he is self-controlled, gentle, pure, owning nothing, free of craving, eating in moderation, peaceful, steady, taking refuge in me: such is the sage.

Owning nothing and eating sparingly describe a renunciate's ideal; this is not advice to give up one's livelihood, nor dietary advice.

Meaning today and context

A good life does not need much: a mind not pushed around by wants, gentleness, moderation, steadiness and trust in something higher. These are qualities anyone can grow, in any walk of life.

Dattatreya lists the qualities of the true sage (muni); these three verses also appear in the Bhagavata Purana (11.11.29-31), where Krishna speaks them, which explains 'taking refuge in me'; here, self-control, simplicity and peace.

8.3 Krishna

apramatto gabhīrātmā dhṛtimānjitaṣaḍguṇaḥ | amānī mānadaḥ kalpo maitraḥ kāruṇikaḥ kaviḥ ||

He is vigilant, deep of soul, steadfast, master of the six (waves of hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, old age and death); he seeks no honour yet honours others; he is capable, friendly, compassionate and wise.

Meaning today and context

Not needing respect, yet freely giving it to others, is a rare and powerful quality. It makes us easier to live and work with, and frees us from the hunger for recognition.

Dattatreya lists the qualities of the true sage (muni); these three verses also appear in the Bhagavata Purana (11.11.29-31), where Krishna speaks them, which explains 'taking refuge in me'; here, vigilance, depth, humility and kindness.

8.4 Krishna

kṛpālurakṛtadrohastitikṣuḥ sarvadehinām | satyasāro'navadyātmā samaḥ sarvopakārakaḥ ||

He is kind, does harm to no one, bears patiently with all embodied beings; truth is his strength, his soul is blameless, he is even-minded and does good to all.

Forbearance is not putting up with abuse or danger. If you are being harmed, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Here the free person is not someone aloof but someone kind, patient and helpful to everyone. Truthfulness and doing no harm are the backbone of a spiritual life.

Dattatreya lists the qualities of the true sage (muni); these three verses also appear in the Bhagavata Purana (11.11.29-31), where Krishna speaks them, which explains 'taking refuge in me'; here, kindness, non-harm, forbearance and service to all.

8.5 Dattatreya

avadhūtalakṣaṇaṃ varṇairjñātavyaṃ bhagavattamaiḥ | vedavarṇārthatattvajñairvedavedāntavādibhiḥ ||

The marks of the Avadhuta are to be understood from the letters (of the word) by the most blessed, who know the truth of the letters and meanings of the Veda and who expound Veda and Vedanta.

Meaning today and context

Even a single word can hold a whole way of life when it is unpacked with care. The next verses show what 'Avadhuta' means, letter by letter.

Dattatreya introduces the acrostic that follows: the marks of the Avadhuta are to be read from the letters of the word a-va-dhu-ta, as those versed in the Veda and Vedanta understand them.

8.6 Dattatreya

āśāpāśavinirmukta ādimadhyāntanirmalaḥ | ānande vartate nityamakāraṃ tasya lakṣaṇam ||

Freed from the noose of hope, pure in beginning, middle and end, he dwells ever in bliss (ananda): this is the mark of the letter 'a'.

Hope here means restless craving, not the hope that helps someone through a hard time. If you feel hopeless, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Joy that does not depend on what we are hoping for is steadier than joy that waits on outcomes. Freedom from the 'noose of hope' is the first mark of a free person.

The first letter of the acrostic: 'a' of avadhuta, the mark of one free from the noose of hope who dwells in bliss.

8.7 Dattatreya

vāsanā varjitā yena vaktavyaṃ ca nirāmayam | vartamāneṣu varteta vakāraṃ tasya lakṣaṇam ||

He by whom latent desires (vasanas) have been given up, whose speech is wholesome, and who lives in what is present: this is the mark of the letter 'va'.

Meaning today and context

Living in the present, speaking without harm, and not being driven by old habits of desire: this is practical wisdom anyone can work on today.

The second letter of the acrostic: 'va', the mark of one free of latent desires, whose speech is wholesome and who lives in the present.

8.8 Dattatreya

dhūlidhūsaragātrāṇi dhūtacitto nirāmayaḥ | dhāraṇādhyānanirmukto dhūkārastasya lakṣaṇam ||

His limbs are grey with dust; his mind is shaken clean, free of all sickness; he is free even of concentration and meditation: this is the mark of the letter 'dhu'.

A dusty body describes a wandering renunciate; it is not advice to neglect hygiene, health or meditation practice. This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

What matters is a mind cleansed of agitation, not how one looks. Practice like meditation is a means; for one whose mind is already clear, it is no longer an effort.

The third letter of the acrostic: 'dhu', the mark of one whose body is grey with dust and whose mind has been 'shaken clean' (dhuta).

8.9 Dattatreya

tattvacintā dhṛtā yena cintāceṣṭāvivarjitaḥ | tamo'haṃkāranirmuktastakārastasya lakṣaṇam ||

He by whom contemplation of the truth is held fast, who is free of anxious thought and restless effort, released from darkness and ego: this is the mark of the letter 'ta'.

Meaning today and context

Holding one's attention on what is true, rather than on worry and busyness, frees us from dullness and ego. It is a quiet steadiness, not a withdrawal from life.

The fourth letter of the acrostic: 'ta', the mark of one who holds to the contemplation of truth (tattva) and is free of darkness (tamas) and ego.

8.10 Narrator

dattātreyāvadhūtena nirmitānandarūpiṇā | ye paṭhanti ca śṛṇvanti teṣāṃ naiva punarbhavaḥ ||

Composed by Dattatreya the Avadhuta, whose form is bliss: those who read it and those who hear it will never be born again.

Meaning today and context

Traditional texts end with a promise of their fruit, to encourage study. Its real point is that understanding this teaching deeply frees us.

The closing verse (phala-shruti) of the Avadhuta Gita, speaking of Dattatreya in the third person and promising freedom from rebirth to those who read or hear it.
