Chapter 7

7.1 Dattatreya

rathyākarpaṭaviracitakanthaḥ puṇyāpuṇyavivarjitapanthaḥ | śūnyāgāre tiṣṭhati nagno śuddhanirañjanasamarasamagnaḥ ||

His patched cloak is made of rags from the street; his path is beyond merit and demerit. He stays naked in an empty house, immersed in the pure, stainless sameness.

Rags, nakedness and empty houses describe the outer life of a wandering renunciate of that tradition; this is not advice to abandon family, home, work or hygiene. For most people it means inner freedom from possessions. 'Beyond merit and demerit' describes one already free; it is not a licence to drop ethics or care for others.

Meaning today and context

The Avadhuta needs nothing from the world to be complete. Most of us will not live like this, but the verse asks how much of our peace we have tied to possessions and appearances.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, his outer life: a ragged cloak, an empty house, a path beyond merit and sin.

7.2 Dattatreya

lakṣyālakṣyavivarjitalakṣyo yuktāyuktavivarjitadakṣaḥ | kevalatattvanirañjanapūto vādavivādaḥ kathamavadhūtaḥ ||

His aim is beyond any aim and no-aim; his skill is beyond the fitting and unfitting. Purified by the one stainless truth alone, how could the Avadhuta engage in argument and debate?

Meaning today and context

When we are secure in what we know to be true, we don't need to win every argument. Much religious and personal quarrelling comes from insecurity, not from understanding.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that one who rests in the one truth has no use for argument and debate.

7.3 Dattatreya

āśāpāśavibandhanamuktāḥ śaucācāravivarjitayuktāḥ | evaṃ sarvavivarjitaśāntāstattvaṃ śuddhanirañjanavantaḥ ||

Freed from the binding noose of hope, joined (to truth) beyond rules of purity and conduct, thus at peace, having let go of everything, they possess the pure, stainless truth.

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities. Hope here means restless craving, not the hope that helps someone through a hard time.

Meaning today and context

The 'noose of hope', always waiting for something more, keeps us restless. Letting go of that constant expectation is where real peace begins.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, those freed from the noose of hope, who rest in peace beyond all rules.

7.4 Dattatreya

kathamiha dehavidehavicāraḥ kathamiha rāgavirāgavicāraḥ | nirmalaniścalagaganākāraṃ svayamiha tattvaṃ sahajākāram ||

How here can there be the question of body and bodilessness? How here the question of attachment and detachment? The truth itself, here, is stainless, unmoving, like the sky, of its own natural form.

Meaning today and context

The truth is not something to be built through effort; it is natural (sahaja), like open sky, already here. Seeking can relax into recognising.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that the truth is natural and sky-like, leaving no room for the debates of body and attachment.

7.5 Dattatreya

kathamiha tattvaṃ vindati yatra rūpamarūpaṃ kathamiha tatra | gaganākāraḥ paramo yatra viṣayīkaraṇaṃ kathamiha tatra ||

How here can one 'find' the truth? Where it is, how can there be form or formlessness? Where the Supreme is like the sky, how can it be made into an object?

Meaning today and context

We often treat spiritual truth as an experience to get, like any other object. The Self is the one who sees, so it can never be one more thing seen.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that the truth, like the sky, cannot be made into an object to be found.

7.6 Dattatreya

gaganākāranirantarahaṃsastattvaviśuddhanirañjanahaṃsaḥ | evaṃ kathamiha bhinnavibhinnaṃ bandhavibandhavikāravibhinnam ||

The swan (the Self) is sky-like and unbroken; the swan is the pure, stainless truth. So how here can there be different and not different, or what is set apart by bondage, release and change?

Meaning today and context

The image of the swan, free to fly anywhere, points to a self that is not caged by any condition. Bondage and release are stories told about it, not facts of it.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, the Self as the 'swan' (hamsa), sky-like and pure.

7.7 Dattatreya

kevalatattvanirantarasarvaṃ yogaviyogau kathamiha garvam | evaṃ paramanirantarasarvamevaṃ kathamiha sāravisāram ||

All is the one truth alone, unbroken; union and separation, how here can they give rise to pride? Thus all is supreme and unbroken; thus how here can there be essence and non-essence?

Meaning today and context

Spiritual pride, 'I have attained union', is still the small self taking credit. If all is one, there is nothing to be proud of and nothing to be ashamed of having lost.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that where all is the one truth, there is no place for pride in union or loss.

7.8 Dattatreya

kevalatattvanirañjanasarvaṃ gaganākāranirantaraśuddham | evaṃ kathamiha saṅgavisaṅgaṃ satyaṃ kathamiha raṅgaviraṅgam ||

All is the one stainless truth alone, sky-like, unbroken and pure. So how here can there be clinging and non-clinging? In truth, how here can there be colour and colourlessness?

Meaning today and context

We try hard to be attached or detached, to colour our lives with feeling or keep them plain. Underneath, the self is like clear sky, which no colour sticks to.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that in the pure, sky-like truth there is no clinging or not clinging.

7.9 Dattatreya

yogaviyogai rahito yogī bhogavibhogai rahito bhogī | evaṃ carati hi mandaṃ mandaṃ manasā kalpitasahajānandam ||

The yogi is free of union and separation; the enjoyer is free of enjoying and not enjoying. So he moves on slowly, gently, in the natural bliss that the mind can only imagine.

Meaning today and context

There is a quiet, unhurried joy that does not depend on gaining or giving up anything. Moving 'slowly, slowly' is a good picture of a life no longer driven by craving.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, how the true yogi and true enjoyer moves through life.

7.10 Dattatreya

bodhavibodhaiḥ satataṃ yukto dvaitādvaitaiḥ kathamiha muktaḥ | sahajo virajaḥ kathamiha yogī śuddhanirañjanasamarasabhogī ||

One who is always bound up with knowing and not-knowing, with duality and non-duality, how is he free? The natural, stainless one, how can he even be called a yogi? He is the enjoyer of pure, stainless sameness.

Meaning today and context

Even arguing about duality and non-duality can become another cage. Freedom is not holding the right position, but resting in what is beyond positions.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that one still holding on to ideas of knowing and duality is not yet free, while the natural one is beyond even being called a yogi.

7.11 Dattatreya

bhagnābhagnavivarjitabhagno lagnālagnavivarjitalagnaḥ | evaṃ kathamiha sāravisāraḥ samarasatattvaṃ gaganākāraḥ ||

Broken beyond broken and unbroken, joined beyond joined and unjoined: so how here can there be essence and non-essence? The truth of sameness is like the sky.

Meaning today and context

Words like broken and whole, attached and free, fall short of what we are. The sky is the text's best image: it holds everything and is touched by nothing.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, in paradoxes: broken and unbroken, attached and unattached no longer apply.

7.12 Dattatreya

satataṃ sarvavivarjitayuktaḥ sarvaṃ tattvavivarjitamuktaḥ | evaṃ kathamiha jīvitamaraṇaṃ dhyānādhyānaiḥ kathamiha karaṇam ||

Ever joined while free of everything, liberated, free even of all categories of truth: so how here can there be life and death? How here can anything be done by meditation and non-meditation?

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities. For someone thinking about death or in crisis, help is available: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The Self is not produced by meditation nor lost without it; practice uncovers what is already there. For one who sees this, even life and death lose their terror.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that for one ever free, life and death, meditation and non-meditation lose their hold.

7.13 Dattatreya

indrajālamidaṃ sarvaṃ yathā marumarīcikā | akhaṇḍitamanākāro vartate kevalaḥ śivaḥ ||

All this is a conjurer's show, like a mirage in the desert. Shiva alone remains, undivided and formless.

Calling the world unreal is about not being ruled by appearances; it is never a reason to neglect your body, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

The dramas that seem so solid, success and failure, praise and blame, are passing appearances. Seeing them as a show doesn't stop us playing our part, but it stops the show from swallowing us.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, in a plain sloka, that all this is a magic show and only Shiva remains.

7.14 Dattatreya

dharmādau mokṣaparyantaṃ nirīhāḥ sarvathā vayam | kathaṃ rāgavirāgaiśca kalpayanti vipaścitaḥ ||

From dharma up to moksha, we are wholly without wanting. How then do the learned imagine us in terms of attachment and detachment?

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Even the wish for liberation can be one more craving. The free person does not reject the aims of life but no longer grasps at any of them, including moksha.

In chapter 7 Dattatreya describes the Avadhuta, the one who has 'shaken off' everything; here, that the free have no wish even for the four aims of life, from dharma up to moksha.

7.15 Dattatreya

vindati vindati na hi na hi yatra chandolakṣaṇaṃ na hi na hi tatra | samarasamagno bhāvitapūtaḥ pralapati tattvaṃ paramavadhūtaḥ ||

Where there is no 'it is found, it is found', no, none at all; where there is no rule of metre, no, none at all: there, immersed in the one sameness, purified by inner realisation, the supreme Avadhuta pours out the truth.

Meaning today and context

The text reminds us that its words are an overflow of realisation, not a rulebook. It invites listening with the heart more than analysing the grammar.

Chapter 7 closes with the same verse that ended chapter 6, describing how the Avadhuta's song arises from absorption in the one reality, not from rules of verse.
