Chapter 6

6.1 Dattatreya

bahudhā śrutayaḥ pravadanti vayaṃ viyadādiridaṃ mṛgatoyasamam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamupameyamathohyupamā ca katham ||

The scriptures say in many ways, and so do we, that this world, beginning with space, is like the water of a mirage. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be a thing compared, and how a comparison?

Calling the world unreal is about not being ruled by appearances; it is never a reason to neglect your body, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

Even the image of a mirage is only a pointer; what is real cannot be measured against anything else. It invites us to hold our descriptions of life, even spiritual ones, lightly.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that the world is like a mirage and so cannot even be compared to anything.

6.2 Dattatreya

avibhaktivibhaktivihīnaparaṃ nanu kāryavikāryavihīnaparam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ yajanaṃ ca kathaṃ tapanaṃ ca katham ||

The Supreme is beyond both division and non-division; truly, the Supreme is beyond cause, effect and change. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be sacrifice, and how austerity?

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Rituals and disciplines are means; the reality they point to is not produced by them. This is said from the standpoint of the goal, not as a reason to drop practice on the way.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how sacrifice and austerity could have any place.

6.3 Dattatreya

mana eva nirantarasarvagataṃ hyaviśālaviśālavihīnaparam | mana eva nirantarasarvaśivaṃ manasāpi kathaṃ vacasā ca katham ||

The mind alone is unbroken and all-pervading, the Supreme beyond small and vast. The mind alone is the unbroken, wholly auspicious one. How then can it be reached by the mind, and how by speech?

Meaning today and context

What we are looking for is not something far away for the mind to catch; it is the very awareness in which thinking happens. That is why no thought or word can contain it, and why stillness can reveal it.

Dattatreya says the mind itself, rightly seen, is the all-pervading, auspicious reality, which therefore cannot be grasped by thought or speech.

6.4 Dattatreya

dinarātrivibhedanirākaraṇamuditānuditasya nirākaraṇam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ ravicandramasau jvalanaśca katham ||

The distinction between day and night is set aside; rising and not rising are set aside. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be sun and moon, and how fire?

Meaning today and context

The light by which we know day and night does not itself rise or set. Sensing that steady awareness can make the ups and downs of time feel less absolute.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how day and night, sun, moon and fire could be separate.

6.5 Dattatreya

gatakāmavikāmavibheda iti gataceṣṭaviceṣṭavibheda iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ bahirantarabhinnamatiśca katham ||

The distinction between desire and freedom from desire is gone; the distinction between striving and not striving is gone. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can the mind think of outside and inside as different?

Meaning today and context

Even 'having no desires' can become one more goal to chase. The verse points beyond both wanting and the effort not to want, to a self that is not divided into inner and outer.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how the mind could split the world into inside and outside.

6.6 Dattatreya

yadi sāravisāravihīna iti yadi śūnyaviśūnyavihīna iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ prathamaṃ ca kathaṃ caramaṃ ca katham ||

If it is beyond essence and non-essence, if it is beyond the void and the non-void, if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be a first, and how a last?

Meaning today and context

Our lives seem to be stories with beginnings and endings, but the awareness that witnesses them is not itself a story. That can steady us when something begins or ends.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how there could be a beginning and an end.

6.7 Dattatreya

yadibhedavibhedanirākaraṇaṃ yadi vedakavedyanirākaraṇam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ tṛtīyaṃ ca kathaṃ turīyaṃ ca katham ||

If difference and non-difference are set aside, if knower and known are set aside, if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be a third state, and how a fourth (turiya)?

Meaning today and context

Even calling the Self 'the fourth state' is a teaching device; in itself it is not one item in a list. Spiritual maps help, but they are not the territory.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how the states of consciousness could even be counted.

6.8 Dattatreya

gaditāviditaṃ na hi satyamiti viditāviditaṃ nahi satyamiti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ viṣayendriyabuddhimanāṃsi katham ||

What is spoken or unspoken is not the truth; what is known or unknown is not the truth. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be objects, senses, intellect and mind?

Meaning today and context

Truth is not an item of information, said or unsaid, known or unknown. It is what all knowing happens in, which can make us humbler about our certainties.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how the senses, objects, intellect and mind could exist as separate things.

6.9 Dattatreya

gaganaṃ pavano na hi satyamiti dharaṇī dahano na hi satyamiti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ jaladaśca kathaṃ salilaṃ ca katham ||

Space and wind are not truly real; earth and fire are not truly real. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be cloud, and how water?

Calling the world unreal is about not being ruled by appearances; it is never a reason to neglect your body, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

The solid-seeming world is a play of changing forms. Seeing this need not make life feel empty; it can loosen the grip of things we fear losing.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that the elements themselves are not ultimately real.

6.10 Dattatreya

yadi kalpitalokanirākaraṇaṃ yadi kalpitadevanirākaraṇam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ guṇadoṣavicāramatiśca katham ||

If imagined worlds are set aside, if imagined gods are set aside, if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be a mind that weighs virtue and fault?

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities. Calling the gods 'imagined' is said from the standpoint of the one reality, not to mock anyone's faith.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from constantly judging, ourselves and others, as good or bad. The verse points to a ground beneath that judging; it does not mean right and wrong stop mattering in how we live.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how a mind that sorts things into virtue and fault could stand.

6.11 Dattatreya

maraṇāmaraṇaṃ hi nirākaraṇaṃ karaṇākaraṇaṃ hi nirākaraṇam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ gamanāgamanaṃ hi kathaṃ vadati ||

Death and deathlessness are set aside; doing and not doing are set aside. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can anyone speak of going and coming?

When someone is grieving or thinking about death, this verse is about the Self, never an invitation to die. Help is available: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The Self does not come into the world or leave it; only forms come and go. For someone afraid of death, this can be a quiet reassurance about what we most truly are.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how anyone could speak of going and coming, of death and rebirth.

6.12 Dattatreya

prakṛtiḥ puruṣo na hi bheda iti na hi kāraṇakāryavibheda iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ puruṣāpuruṣaṃ ca kathaṃ vadati ||

There is no difference between Prakriti (nature) and Purusha (spirit); there is no difference between cause and effect. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can anyone speak of spirit and non-spirit?

Meaning today and context

Philosophies divide reality into matter and spirit, cause and effect; the Avadhuta sees one reality in which those divisions are only ways of speaking.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that even the Samkhya pair of nature and spirit is not two.

6.13 Dattatreya

tṛtīyaṃ na hi duḥkhasamāgamanaṃ na guṇāddvitīyasya samāgamanam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ sthaviraśca yuvā ca śiśuśca katham ||

There is no coming of sorrow as a third; there is no coming of a second out of the gunas. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be the old man, the youth and the child?

Meaning today and context

The body passes through childhood, youth and old age, but the awareness that knows each stage does not age. For someone feeling the weight of years, this can be a source of steadiness.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how there could be old age, youth and childhood. The first line is obscure in the text.

6.14 Dattatreya

nanu āśramavarṇavihīnaparaṃ nanu kāraṇakartṛvihīnaparam | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamavinaṣṭavinaṣṭamatiśca katham ||

Truly, the Supreme is without stage of life (ashrama) or class (varna); truly, the Supreme is without cause or doer. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be the idea of perishing and not perishing?

Meaning today and context

What we most truly are has no caste, class or social label. This is one of the clearest statements that birth and status say nothing about a person's real worth.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that the Supreme has no caste, stage of life or doer.

6.15 Dattatreya

grasitāgrasitaṃ ca vitathyamiti janitājanitaṃ ca vitathyamiti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamavināśi vināśi kathaṃ hi bhavet ||

Swallowed (by time) and not swallowed, both are false; born and unborn, both are false. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how could the imperishable ever become perishable?

Meaning today and context

What is truly you cannot be destroyed or used up by time. That does not make loss painless, but it can give a floor beneath fear of loss.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how the imperishable could ever become perishable.

6.16 Dattatreya

puruṣāpuruṣasya vinaṣṭamiti vanitāvanitasya vinaṣṭamiti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamavinodavinodamatiśca katham ||

The notion of man and not-man has perished; the notion of woman and not-woman has perished. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be the thought of sorrow and delight?

Meaning today and context

Our deepest identity is not male or female, nor any other label. Seeing this can free us from roles we feel trapped in, while we still live our lives with care.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that the notions of man and woman have vanished.

6.17 Dattatreya

yadi mohaviṣādavihīnaparo yadi saṃśayaśokavihīnaparaḥ | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamahameti mameti kathaṃ ca punaḥ ||

If the Supreme is beyond delusion and dejection, if it is beyond doubt and grief, if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how could 'I' and 'mine' come back again?

Meaning today and context

Much of our worry, doubt and grief is built around 'I' and 'mine'. Seeing that our deepest self is not that small owner can bring real relief, even while we keep caring for people and things.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how, for one free of delusion and grief, 'I' and 'mine' could return.

6.18 Dattatreya

nanu dharmavidharmavināśa iti nanu bandhavibandhavināśa iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivamihaduḥkhaviduḥkhamatiśca katham ||

Truly, dharma and adharma are destroyed; truly, bondage and freedom are destroyed. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be here the thought of sorrow and freedom from sorrow?

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

In the vision of the one Self, even the idea of being bound and needing release falls away. For the rest of us, dharma remains the way we live while that vision ripens.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that even dharma and adharma, bondage and freedom, have vanished.

6.19 Dattatreya

na hi yājñikayajñavibhāga iti na hutāśanavastuvibhāga iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ vada karmaphalāni bhavanti katham ||

There is no division between sacrificer and sacrifice; there is no division between the fire and the offering. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), tell me, how can there be fruits of action?

Meaning today and context

When doer, deed and result are seen as one reality, there is no separate self to collect rewards or punishments. Acting from that sense lightens the anxious weight of outcomes.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, how there could be fruits of action at all.

6.20 Dattatreya

nanu śokaviśokavimukta iti nanu darpavidarpavimukta iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ nanu rāgavirāgamatiśca katham ||

Truly, one is free of grief and of its absence; truly, free of pride and of its absence. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be the thought of attachment and detachment?

Meaning today and context

Even humility can become a quiet pride, and detachment a new attachment. Real freedom is not swinging to the opposite pole but resting beneath both.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that one free of grief and pride has no room for attachment and aversion.

6.21 Dattatreya

na hi mohavimohavikāra iti na hi lobhavilobhavikāra iti | yadi caikanirantarasarvaśivaṃ hyavivekavivekamatiśca katham ||

There is no change into delusion or out of it; there is no change into greed or out of it. If all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva (the auspicious), how can there be the thought of non-discrimination and discrimination?

Meaning today and context

Greed and confusion come and go like weather, but they never change what we are at the core. Knowing this, we can face them without despair, and still practise discernment.

In chapter 6 of the Avadhuta Gita, Dattatreya repeats the refrain 'if all is one, unbroken, wholly Shiva', and asks how any distinction could then stand; here, that delusion and greed do not touch the Self, nor does the idea of discrimination.

6.22 Dattatreya

tvamahaṃ na hi hanta kadācidapi kulajātivicāramasatyamiti | ahameva śivaḥ paramārtha iti abhivādanamatra karomi katham ||

You and I, ah, are never separate at any time; thinking in terms of family and caste is untrue. I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how then can I offer salutation here?

'How can I bow?' expresses the Avadhuta's sense that nothing is other than the Self; it is not a reason to be arrogant or to stop showing respect to parents, teachers, elders or anyone.

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level there is no 'you' and 'me' to rank by family or caste. This is a strong statement that birth-based distinctions have no ground in the Self, and that the other person is not truly other.

Dattatreya changes the refrain to 'I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how can I bow to anything here?'; here, that 'you' and 'I' are not two, and that thoughts of family and caste are untrue.

6.23 Dattatreya

guruśiṣyavicāraviśīrṇa iti upadeśavicāraviśīrṇa iti | ahameva śivaḥ paramārtha iti abhivādanamatra karomi katham ||

The thought of teacher and disciple has fallen away; the thought of instruction has fallen away.

Teaching and learning are a bridge; when the truth is fully seen, the bridge is no longer needed. Until then, a good teacher and real learning matter greatly.

Dattatreya changes the refrain to 'I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how can I bow to anything here?'; here, that even the roles of guru and disciple have dissolved.

6.24 Dattatreya

na hi kalpitadehavibhāga iti na hi kalpitalokavibhāga iti | ahameva śivaḥ paramārtha iti abhivādanamatra karomi katham ||

There is no division into imagined bodies; there is no division into imagined worlds. I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how then can I offer salutation here?

Calling the world unreal is about not being ruled by appearances; it is never a reason to neglect your body, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

The lines we draw between 'my body' and 'yours', 'this world' and 'that', are drawn by the mind. Seeing this can soften the sense of isolation.

Dattatreya changes the refrain to 'I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how can I bow to anything here?'; here, that the divisions into bodies and worlds are only imagined.

6.25 Dattatreya

sarajo virajo na kadācidapi nanu nirmalaniścalaśuddha iti | ahameva śivaḥ paramārtha iti abhivādanamatra karomi katham ||

Never at any time is it stained with dust (passion) or cleansed of it; truly it is spotless, unmoving and pure. I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how then can I offer salutation here?

If guilt or shame feels overwhelming, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416. The verse does not mean harm done to others need not be put right.

Meaning today and context

Whatever we have done or suffered, our innermost self has never been soiled. For someone weighed down by guilt or shame, this can be a gentle starting point for healing.

Dattatreya changes the refrain to 'I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how can I bow to anything here?'; here, that the Self is never stained or cleansed, only ever pure.

6.26 Dattatreya

na hi dehavidehavikalpa iti anṛtaṃ caritaṃ na hi satyamiti | ahameva śivaḥ paramārtha iti abhivādanamatra karomi katham ||

There is no alternative of body and bodilessness; conduct is untrue, not the truth. I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how then can I offer salutation here?

This describes the inner state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, practice, worship, care for others or one's responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

The Self is not made better or worse by what the body does; that is the point here. It describes the vision of one already free, and is not a reason to stop caring how we behave.

Dattatreya changes the refrain to 'I alone am Shiva, the supreme reality: how can I bow to anything here?'; here, that the distinction of embodied and bodiless is gone and conduct is not the ultimate truth.

6.27 Dattatreya

vindati vindati na hi na hi yatra chandolakṣaṇaṃ na hi na hi tatra | samarasamagno bhāvitapūtaḥ pralapati tattvaṃ paramavadhūtaḥ ||

Where there is no 'it is found, it is found', no, none at all; where there is no rule of metre, no, none at all: there, immersed in the one sameness, purified by inner realisation, the supreme Avadhuta pours out the truth.

Meaning today and context

Some truths come out not as polished argument but as an overflow from deep experience. This verse explains why the Avadhuta Gita sounds like ecstatic speech rather than a treatise.

The closing verse of chapter 6 (repeated at the end of chapter 7) describes how the Avadhuta's song arises: not from rules of verse or learned effort, but from absorption in the one reality.
