Janaka of Videha performed a sacrifice with lavish gifts for the priests. The brahmins of the Kurus and Panchalas had gathered there. Janaka of Videha wanted to know: 'Which of these brahmins is the most learned in the Veda?' He penned in a thousand cows; to the horns of each were tied ten measures (pādas) of gold.

Brihadaranyaka 3.1.1. Narration: King Janaka of Videha holds a great sacrifice; brahmins of the Kuru and Panchala lands gather, and Janaka sets a prize of a thousand gold-horned cows to find the most learned among them. This opens the debate in which Yajnavalkya is questioned in turn.

He said to them: 'Venerable brahmins, let whoever is the greatest knower of Brahman among you drive these cows away.' The brahmins did not dare. Then Yajnavalkya said to his own student, 'Samashravas, my dear, drive them away.' He drove them off. The brahmins were angry: 'How can he call himself the greatest knower of Brahman among us?' Now Ashvala was the hotri priest of Janaka of Videha. He asked him, 'Yajnavalkya, are you really the greatest knower of Brahman among us?' He replied, 'We bow to the greatest knower of Brahman. We just want the cows.' At that, Ashvala the hotri resolved to question him.

Yajnavalkya's wry answer deflates the claim to be 'the best': he doesn't boast, he simply acts and lets the questions test him.
Brihadaranyaka 3.1.2. Narration with dialogue: Janaka challenges the brahmins; only Yajnavalkya has his student drive the cows away; the angry priests object, and Janaka's hotri priest Ashvala begins to question him.
'Yajnavalkya,' he said, 'since all this is reached by death and overcome by death, by what means does the sacrificer free himself beyond the reach of death?' 'By the hotri priest, by fire, by speech. Speech is the hotri of the sacrifice. This speech is this fire; it is the hotri; it is freedom, it is full freedom.'

In this ritual teaching, an ordinary power like speech, rightly understood as something larger than oneself, becomes a way past death. Our words are not small things.
Brihadaranyaka 3.1.3. Ashvala, Janaka's hotri priest, asks (the question is his) and Yajnavalkya answers: how does the sacrificer go beyond death? Through speech, which is fire and the hotri priest.
'Yajnavalkya,' he said, 'since all this is reached by day and night and overcome by day and night, by what means does the sacrificer free himself beyond the reach of day and night?' 'By the adhvaryu priest, by the eye, by the sun. The eye is the adhvaryu of the sacrifice. This eye is that sun; it is the adhvaryu; it is freedom, it is full freedom.'
