'Maitreyi,' said Yajnavalkya, 'I am about to go away from this place. Come, let me make a final settlement between you and Katyayani here.'
Yajnavalkya first settles his property on his wives before leaving. This is not advice to walk out on a spouse, children or dependants; for most people the teaching means inner detachment within one's duties.

The great dialogue on the Self begins with a practical act: before leaving, Yajnavalkya makes sure those who depend on him are provided for.
Brihadaranyaka 2.4.1. Yajnavalkya, about to leave the householder's life, tells his wife Maitreyi that he wants to settle his property between her and his other wife, Katyayani.
Maitreyi said: 'Sir, if this whole earth filled with wealth were mine, would I become immortal by it?' 'No,' said Yajnavalkya. 'Your life would be just like the life of people who have plenty of things. But of immortality there is no hope through wealth.'
This is not a rejection of earning or of financial security; it says wealth cannot give what lies beyond it. Not financial advice.

Money can make life comfortable, and that has its place. But it cannot answer the deepest questions: who we are, what lasts, how to face death. Maitreyi's question is worth asking before chasing more.
Brihadaranyaka 2.4.2. Maitreyi answers Yajnavalkya's offer of property with a question (these lines are hers): would the whole earth full of wealth make her immortal? Yajnavalkya says no.

Maitreyi chooses understanding over inheritance. When we see that something cannot give what we really seek, we can stop collecting it and ask for what can.
Brihadaranyaka 2.4.3. Maitreyi (the whole unit is her speech) turns down the property and asks Yajnavalkya to teach her what he knows instead.

Brihadaranyaka 2.4.4. Yajnavalkya, pleased with Maitreyi's choice, agrees to teach her and asks her to reflect deeply as he explains.

For where there is duality, as it were, there one smells another, one sees another, one hears another, one speaks to another, one thinks of another, one knows another. But where everything has become one's own Self, then by what and whom would one smell, by what and whom would one see, by what and whom would one hear, by what and to whom would one speak, by what and of whom would one think, by what and whom would one know?
