In the beginning this world was the self alone, in the shape of a person. He looked around and saw nothing other than himself. He first said, 'I am.' From that came the name 'I'. That is why even now, when someone is addressed, he first says 'It is I' and then states whatever other name he has. Because before (pūrva) all this he burned up (auṣ) all evils, he is puruṣa. One who knows this burns up whoever wants to be ahead of him.

Before any name, role or label, there is the simple sense 'I am'. Every other identity is added on top of it, which is why it is worth asking who that 'I' really is.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.1 begins a creation account: in the beginning there was only the self, shaped like a person, who first said 'I am'.
He was afraid; that is why one who is alone is afraid. Then he reflected: 'Since there is nothing other than me, what am I afraid of?' At that his fear went away. For what was there to fear? It is from a second that fear arises.
This is about the root of fear, not a reason to dismiss real danger or to stay isolated. If you are in danger, call 112; if fear or loneliness overwhelms you, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Fear grows from feeling separate and surrounded by what is 'other'. Stopping to ask 'what exactly am I afraid of?' can itself loosen fear, and the deeper the sense of belonging to the whole, the less there is to dread.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.2: the self, alone, became afraid; then it reflected that there was nothing other than itself to fear, and the fear left, for fear comes from a second.

He made this very self fall into two, and from that came husband and wife. Therefore, as Yājñavalkya used to say, 'each of us is like one half of a split pea.' That is why this space is filled by the wife. He united with her, and from that human beings were born.

The text honours the longing for a companion as part of how life itself began. Husband and wife are pictured as two halves of one whole, each completing the other.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.3: alone, the self found no joy and wanted a second; it split itself into husband and wife, and from their union human beings were born. Yājñavalkya is quoted on each person being like half of a split pea.
She thought: 'How can he unite with me after producing me from himself? Let me hide.' She became a cow, the other a bull; he united with her, and from that cattle were born. She became a mare, the other a stallion; she a she-ass, the other a he-ass; he united with her, and from that the one-hoofed animals were born. She became a she-goat, the other a he-goat; she a ewe, the other a ram; he united with her, and from that goats and sheep were born. In this way he created every pair that exists, down to the ants.

The maker is not apart from what is made. Seeing the world as an expression of the one self, rather than as something foreign, changes how we stand in it.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.5: the self realises that it is itself the creation, since it has made all this.
Then he churned thus, and from the mouth as from a womb, and from the two hands, he created fire. That is why both of these are hairless on the inside, for the womb is hairless inside. When people say, 'Sacrifice to this god, sacrifice to that god', each god is only his own creation, for he himself is all the gods. Then whatever is moist he created from semen, and that is Soma. All this is just this much: food and the eater of food. Soma is food, fire is the eater of food. This is Brahman's higher creation: that he created gods better than himself, and that, being mortal, he created immortals. That is why it is a higher creation. One who knows this comes to be in this higher creation of his.

At that time this was undifferentiated. It became differentiated by name and form alone: 'He has such a name, such a form.' Even now it is differentiated by name and form alone: 'He has such a name, such a form.' He has entered here, right up to the tips of the nails, as a razor lies in its case, or fire in its fire-nest. People do not see him, for he is incomplete. Breathing, he is called breath; speaking, speech; seeing, the eye; hearing, the ear; thinking, the mind. These are only the names of his actions. Whoever meditates on one or another of these does not know, for he is incomplete in each one of them. One should meditate on him as the self, for in it all these become one. This self is the track of all this, for through it one knows all this, just as one finds (a lost animal) by its footprints. One who knows this finds fame and praise.

This self is dearer than a son, dearer than wealth, dearer than everything else, for it is more inward. If a person calls something other than the self dear, and someone tells him, 'You will lose what you hold dear', it may well turn out so. One should meditate on the self alone as dear. For one who meditates on the self alone as dear, what is dear does not perish.
The 'self' here is the innermost Self, not selfishness, and the verse does not ask anyone to care less for their child or family. If you are grieving a loss, the grief is real; this verse does not dismiss it.

Children, money and possessions can be lost, and a love that rests only on them lives in fear of that. The verse points to what is innermost as the dearest thing, which no loss can take. It does not ask us to love our children less, but to rest our deepest security where it cannot be taken away.

In the beginning this was Brahman. It knew only itself: 'I am Brahman.' Therefore it became all. Whoever among the gods awoke to this became that; so too among the seers, so too among human beings. Seeing this, the seer Vāmadeva realised: 'I was Manu, and the sun.' So even now, whoever knows 'I am Brahman' becomes all this. Even the gods cannot prevent him from becoming it, for he becomes their very self. But whoever worships another deity, thinking 'He is one, and I am another', does not know. He is like a domestic animal to the gods. Just as many animals serve a person, so each person serves the gods. Even if one animal is taken away it is unpleasant, how much more if many are? That is why the gods do not like people to know this.
'I am Brahman' is about the Self beyond the ego, not a claim to special power over others, and not a reason to drop care for one's body, family or work.
Meaning today and context
'I am Brahman' is not a boast of the ego but the recognition that one's deepest self is not separate from the whole. It frees a person from seeing themselves as small, dependent and owned by forces outside them, and the text says no power can take that recognition away.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.10, the great saying 'ahaṃ brahmāsmi': Brahman knew itself as 'I am Brahman' and became all; whoever knows this becomes all, while one who worships a god as other than himself is like a domestic animal to the gods.
In the beginning this was Brahman, one only. Being one, it did not flourish. It created a better form, the ruling power: those who are rulers among the gods, Indra, Varuṇa, Soma, Rudra, Parjanya, Yama, Mṛtyu and Īśāna. Therefore there is nothing higher than the ruling power, and so at the royal consecration the brāhmaṇa sits below the kṣatriya and honours him; he confers that glory on the ruling power itself. Yet Brahman is the source of the ruling power. So even if a king reaches the highest rank, in the end he takes refuge in Brahman, his own source. Whoever harms it strikes at his own source; he becomes worse, like one who has harmed someone better than himself.
Brāhmaṇa and kṣatriya here name functions, learning and rule, in the society of the time; they are never a basis for ranking people by birth or caste.

Brihadaranyaka 1.4.13: still not flourishing, Brahman created the śūdra order as Pūṣan, the earth, which nourishes everything.
sa naiva vyabhavat | tacchreyo rūpamatyasṛjata dharmam | tadetatkṣatrasya kṣatraṃ yaddharmaḥ | tasmāddharmātparaṃ nāsti | atho abalīyānbalīyāṃsamāśaṃsate dharmeṇa | yathā rājñaivam | yo vai sa dharmaḥ satyaṃ vai tat | tasmātsatyaṃ vadantamāhurdharmaṃ vadatīti | dharmaṃ vā vadantaṃ satyaṃ vadatīti | etaddhyevaitadubhayaṃ bhavati ||
Still it did not flourish. It created a better form, dharma. Dharma is the ruling power of the ruling power; therefore there is nothing higher than dharma. Through dharma even a weaker person hopes to prevail over a stronger one, just as through a king. Truly, that which is dharma is truth. That is why of a person who speaks the truth they say, 'He speaks dharma', and of one who speaks dharma, 'He speaks the truth.' For both are this one thing.
Standing on what is right does not mean facing danger alone; if you are being harmed or threatened, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Above every kind of power stands what is right. When you are weaker than the person wronging you, what is right and true is your strength, and justice exists so that the weak can stand against the strong. Truth and right conduct are not two separate things.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.14: Brahman finally created dharma, the 'power above power'; through dharma the weak can prevail over the strong, and dharma is the same as truth.

So these are the priestly power, the ruling power, the people and the śūdra. Among the gods Brahman became so through fire; among humans as the brāhmaṇa; through the kṣatriya as a kṣatriya, through the vaiśya as a vaiśya, through the śūdra as a śūdra. Therefore people seek their world among the gods in fire, and among humans in the brāhmaṇa, for in these two forms Brahman came to be. Now, if anyone leaves this world without having seen his own world, that world, being unknown, does not benefit him, like the Veda not recited or any other work left undone. Even if one who does not know this does a great and holy work, it surely runs out for him in the end. One should meditate on the self alone as one's world. For one who meditates on the self alone as his world, his work does not run out; for from this very self he brings forth whatever he desires.
The varṇa names describe the social order of the time; worth is by conduct and knowledge, never birth, and this passage must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Even great achievements and good deeds run out if we never come to know ourselves. A life can be full of work and still miss what matters most; knowing the self gives lasting worth to what we do.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.15: after naming the four social orders, the passage turns: one who dies without having seen his own 'world', the self, gains nothing even from great good works, which run out; one who meditates on the self as his world does not lose his work.

Now this self is a world for all beings. In that he makes offerings and sacrifices, he is the world of the gods. In that he recites the Veda, he is the world of the seers. In that he makes offerings to the ancestors and wishes for offspring, he is the world of the ancestors. In that he gives people shelter and gives them food, he is the world of human beings. In that he finds grass and water for animals, he is the world of animals. In that beasts and birds, down to the ants, live off his houses, he is their world. Just as one would wish safety for one's own world, so all beings always wish safety for one who knows this. This has been known and examined.

A household is not just for its own members: through it, teachers, ancestors, guests, the hungry, animals and even ants are sustained. Living this way, sharing food and shelter and caring for creatures, makes one's life a home for many, and goodwill returns.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.16: the self, the householder, is a 'world' for all beings: by offerings for the gods, study for the seers, offerings and children for the ancestors, shelter and food for people, grass and water for animals, and home for birds and creatures down to ants.

In the beginning this world was the self alone, one only. He desired: 'Let me have a wife, then let me have children; then let me have wealth, then let me do works.' That is the full extent of desire; even wishing for more, one would not find more than this. So even now a person who is alone desires: 'Let me have a wife, then let me have children; then let me have wealth, then let me do works.' As long as he does not obtain each of these, he thinks himself incomplete. But here is his completeness: the mind is his self, speech his wife, breath his children, the eye his human wealth, for with the eye one finds it; the ear his divine wealth, for with the ear one hears it; the body is his work, for with the body one does work. This is the fivefold sacrifice. Fivefold is the animal, fivefold the person, fivefold is all this, whatever there is. One who knows this obtains all this.
This does not say a single or childless person is incomplete; it says the opposite, that completeness is found within. Wanting a family or a livelihood is not wrong.

Spouse, children, money and career: the Upanishad names exactly the list most of us chase, and the feeling of being incomplete until we have it all. It then points to a completeness already present in our own mind, speech, breath, senses and body. That does not make these goals wrong; it means our worth does not wait on ticking every box.
Brihadaranyaka 1.4.17: the self, alone, desired a wife, children, wealth and work; that is the whole extent of desire, and a person feels incomplete until he has each. The Upanishad then gives an inner completeness: mind, speech, breath, eye, ear and body as the fivefold sacrifice.
