Adhyāya 1, Brāhmaṇa 3

1.3.1 Upanishadic seer

dvayā ha prājāpatyā devāścāsurāśca tataḥ kānīyasā eva devā jyāyasā asurāḥ | ta eṣu lokeṣvaspardhanta | te ha devā ūcurhantāsurānyajña udgīthenātyayāmeti ||

There were two kinds of Prajāpati's children, the gods and the demons. The gods were the younger, the demons the elder. They contended with each other for these worlds. The gods said: 'Come, let us overcome the demons at the sacrifice by means of the udgītha.'

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad sets up a story about the inner powers of a person, speech, smell, sight, hearing and mind, and which of them can stay free of what drags us down.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.1 opens the story of the gods and the demons, both children of Prajāpati, who contend for the worlds; the gods decide to overcome the demons at the sacrifice through the chanted udgītha.

1.3.2 Upanishadic seer

They said to speech, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said speech, and chanted for them. Whatever enjoyment there is in speech, it chanted for the gods; whatever good it speaks, it kept for itself. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it and pierced it with evil. That evil is this: whatever improper thing one says. That is that evil.

Meaning today and context

The text locates evil not somewhere far away but in our own speech: the unfitting, hurtful or false word. Speech that serves only our own advantage is already open to it.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.2: the gods ask speech to chant for them; speech keeps the good speaking for itself, and the demons pierce it with evil. The evil is speaking what is improper.

1.3.3 Upanishadic seer

Then they said to breath, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said breath, and chanted for them. Whatever enjoyment there is in breath, it chanted for the gods; whatever good it smells, it kept for itself. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it and pierced it with evil. That evil is this: whatever improper thing one smells. That is that evil.

Meaning today and context

Each sense, when it works for its own pleasure, can be pulled toward what is not good for us. The story asks us to notice where our senses lead.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.3: the same happens to breath in the nose, the sense of smell; it keeps the good smelling for itself and is pierced with evil.

1.3.4 Upanishadic seer

Then they said to the eye, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said the eye, and chanted for them. Whatever enjoyment there is in the eye, it chanted for the gods; whatever good it sees, it kept for itself. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it and pierced it with evil. That evil is this: whatever improper thing one sees. That is that evil.

Meaning today and context

What we choose to look at shapes us. The verse treats looking at what is unfitting as the place where harm gets in.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.4: the eye chants for the gods, keeps the good seeing for itself, and is pierced with evil, which is seeing what is improper.

1.3.5 Upanishadic seer

Then they said to the ear, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said the ear, and chanted for them. Whatever enjoyment there is in the ear, it chanted for the gods; whatever good it hears, it kept for itself. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it and pierced it with evil. That evil is this: whatever improper thing one hears. That is that evil.

Meaning today and context

Listening is not neutral. Gossip, slander and cruel talk that we take in leave their mark, so it matters what we lend our ears to.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.5: the ear chants for the gods, keeps the good hearing for itself, and is pierced with evil, which is hearing what is improper.

1.3.6 Upanishadic seer

Then they said to the mind, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said the mind, and chanted for them. Whatever enjoyment there is in the mind, it chanted for the gods; whatever good it intends, it kept for itself. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it and pierced it with evil. That evil is this: whatever improper thing one intends. That is that evil. In this way they touched these deities with evils; in this way they pierced them with evil.

Meaning today and context

Wrong begins even before words and deeds, in what we intend and imagine. Watching our intentions is the deepest kind of self-care the text points to.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.6: last the mind chants, keeps the good intending for itself, and is pierced with evil, which is improper intention. So all these powers were struck with evil.

1.3.7 Upanishadic seer

atha hemamāsanyaṃ prāṇamūcustvaṃ na udgāyeti | tatheti tebhya eṣa prāṇa udagāyat | te'viduranena vai na udgātrātyeṣyantīti | tamabhidrutya pāpmanāvivyatsan | sa yathāśmānamṛtvā loṣṭo vidhvaṃsetaivaṃ haiva vidhvaṃsamānā viṣvañco vineśuḥ | tato devā abhavan, parāsurā | bhavatyātmanā, parāsya dviṣanbhrātṛvyo bhavati ya evaṃ veda ||

Then they said to this breath in the mouth, 'Chant the udgītha for us.' 'So be it,' said this breath, and chanted for them. The demons knew: 'Through this chanter they will overcome us.' They rushed at it, wanting to pierce it with evil. But just as a clod of earth that strikes a stone is shattered, so they were shattered, scattered in all directions, and perished. Then the gods prevailed and the demons were defeated. One who knows this prevails in himself, and the rival who hates him is defeated.

The defeat of the 'rival who hates him' belongs to the story; it is not a licence to wish harm on anyone.

Meaning today and context

The breath that sustains life works for the whole body and keeps nothing for itself, and that is why evil cannot touch it. What serves all, not just its own pleasure, stands firm.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.7: finally the gods ask the breath in the mouth, the vital breath, to chant. It keeps nothing for itself, and the demons who attack it shatter like a clod hitting a stone.

1.3.8 Upanishadic seer

te hocuḥ kva nu so'bhūdyo na itthamasakteti | ayamāsye'ntariti | so'yāsya āṅgiraso'ṅgānāṃ hi rasaḥ ||

They said: 'Where was he who has stood by us like this?' 'He is here within the mouth (āsya).' So he is Ayāsya Āṅgirasa, for he is the essence (rasa) of the limbs (aṅga).

Meaning today and context

What truly holds us together is not the senses that seek pleasure but the quiet life-breath within, which we rarely notice.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.8: the gods ask who it was that stood by them; the answer is the breath within the mouth, named Ayāsya Āṅgirasa because it is the essence of the limbs.

1.3.9 Upanishadic seer

sā vā eṣā devatā dūrnāma | dūraṃ hyasyā mṛtyur | dūraṃ ha vā asmānmṛtyurbhavati ya evaṃ veda ||

This deity is named Dūr, for death is far (dūra) from it. Death is far from one who knows this.

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad promises that understanding what sustains life loosens death's hold. It speaks of an inner freedom from fear of death, not of escaping the body's end.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.9: the breath is given the name Dūr, 'far', because death is far from it, and from one who knows it.

1.3.10 Upanishadic seer

sā vā eṣā devataitāsāṃ devatānāṃ pāpmānaṃ mṛtyumapahatya yatrāsāṃ diśāmantastadgamayāṃ cakāra | tadāsāṃ pāpmano vinyadadhāt | tasmānna janamiyānnāntamiyānnetpāpmānaṃ mṛtyumanvavāyānīti ||

This deity struck away the evil, death, of these deities and sent it to where the ends of the quarters are; there it laid down their evils. Therefore one should not go to those people, nor go to that end, thinking, 'Lest I fall in with evil, with death.'

This reflects ancient beliefs about distant lands; it is never a reason to avoid, distrust or look down on people from other places or communities.

Meaning today and context

A piece of old myth explaining why the farthest lands were thought dangerous. Today it is best read as a picture of evil being pushed out of the inner world.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.10: the breath strikes away the evil, death, from the other powers and banishes it to the ends of the quarters; hence the old injunction not to go to those far regions.

1.3.11 Upanishadic seer

sā vā eṣā devataitāsāṃ devatānāṃ pāpmānaṃ mṛtyumapahatyāthainā mṛtyumatyavahat ||

This deity, having struck away the evil, death, of these deities, then carried them beyond death.

Meaning today and context

When the senses and mind are joined to what sustains life rather than to their own cravings, they too are lifted beyond what kills.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.11: having removed their evil, the breath carries the other powers beyond death.

1.3.12 Upanishadic seer

sā vai vācameva prathamāmatyavahat | sā yadā mṛtyumatyamucyata so'gnirabhavat | so'yamagniḥ pareṇa mṛtyumatikrānto dīpyate ||

It carried speech across first. When speech was freed from death, it became fire. This fire, having passed beyond death, blazes.

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad links each human power to a power of the cosmos: speech to fire.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.12: speech, carried beyond death, becomes fire.

1.3.13 Upanishadic seer

atha prāṇamatyavahat | sa yadā mṛtyumatyamucyata sa vāyurabhavat | so'yaṃ vāyuḥ pareṇa mṛtyumatikrāntaḥ pavate ||

Then it carried breath across. When it was freed from death, it became wind. This wind, having passed beyond death, blows.

Meaning today and context

Smell, the breath of the nose, is matched with the wind.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.13: smell (breath in the nose), carried beyond death, becomes wind.

1.3.14 Upanishadic seer

atha cakṣuratyavahat | tadyadā mṛtyumatyamucyata sa ādityo'bhavat | so'sāvādityaḥ pareṇa mṛtyumatikrāntastapati ||

Then it carried the eye across. When it was freed from death, it became the sun. That sun, having passed beyond death, shines with heat.

Meaning today and context

Sight is matched with the sun.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.14: the eye, carried beyond death, becomes the sun.

1.3.15 Upanishadic seer

atha śrotramatyavahat | tadyadā mṛtyumatyamucyata tā diśo'bhavan | tā imā diśaḥ pareṇa mṛtyumatikrāntāḥ ||

Then it carried the ear across. When it was freed from death, it became the quarters. These quarters have passed beyond death.

Meaning today and context

Hearing is matched with the directions of space.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.15: the ear, carried beyond death, becomes the quarters of space.

1.3.16 Upanishadic seer

atha mano'tyavahat | tadyadā mṛtyumatyamucyata sa candramā abhavat | so'sau candraḥ pareṇa mṛtyumatikrānto bhāti | evaṃ ha vā enameṣā devatā mṛtyumativahati ya evaṃ veda ||

Then it carried the mind across. When it was freed from death, it became the moon. That moon, having passed beyond death, shines. In the same way this deity carries beyond death one who knows this.

Meaning today and context

Our powers of speech, sight, hearing and thought are not only private; the text sees them as part of the larger world. Knowing this is said to free a person from death's grip.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.16: the mind, carried beyond death, becomes the moon; the breath carries beyond death whoever knows this.

1.3.17 Upanishadic seer

athātmane'nnādyamāgāyat | yaddhi kiñcānnamadyate'nenaiva tadadyate | iha pratitiṣṭhati ||

Then it chanted food for itself, for whatever food is eaten is eaten by it alone; and it stands firm here.

Meaning today and context

Life is what eats and is nourished. Food is not a mere pleasure of the tongue but what keeps the whole person standing.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.17: the breath then chants food for itself, since all food is eaten by breath alone.

1.3.18 Upanishadic seer

The gods said: 'All this is just so much, food. You have chanted it for yourself. Give us a share in this food.' 'Then enter into me.' 'So be it,' they said, and entered into it from all sides. Therefore whatever food one eats through this breath, by that these are satisfied. So too his own people come to one who knows this; he becomes the support of his own, their best, their leader, an eater of food, their head. Whoever among his own people wants to rival one who knows this is not able to support his dependants. But whoever follows him, and wishes through following him to support his dependants, is able to support them.

Meaning today and context

Like the breath that feeds every sense when it eats, a good head of a family or team is one through whom everyone is nourished. Rivalry inside a family or group weakens everyone's ability to provide.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.18: the other powers ask the breath for a share of food; it lets them enter it, so they are fed when it eats. One who knows this becomes the support and leader of his own people.

1.3.19 Upanishadic seer

so'yāsya āṅgiraso'ṅgānāṃ hi rasaḥ | prāṇo vā aṅgānāṃ rasaḥ | prāṇo hi vā aṅgānāṃ rasaḥ | tasmādyasmātkasmāccāṅgātprāṇa utkrāmati tadeva tacchuṣyati | eṣa hi vā aṅgānāṃ rasaḥ ||

He is Ayāsya Āṅgirasa, for he is the essence of the limbs. Breath is the essence of the limbs; yes, breath is the essence of the limbs. Therefore from whatever limb breath departs, that limb dries up. For this is the essence of the limbs.

Meaning today and context

Life is not in the parts by themselves but in what flows through them. The same is true of a family or a body of work: without that living current, things dry up.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.19 explains the name Ayāsya Āṅgirasa again: breath is the essence of the limbs, and any limb it leaves withers.

1.3.20 Upanishadic seer

eṣa u eva bṛhaspatiḥ | vāgvai bṛhatī | tasyā eṣa patistasmādu bṛhaspatiḥ ||

He is also Bṛhaspati. Speech is bṛhatī, and he is its lord (pati); therefore he is Bṛhaspati.

Meaning today and context

A ritual etymology: breath is the master of speech, since we speak on the breath.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.20: the breath is also Bṛhaspati, the lord of speech (bṛhatī).

1.3.21 Upanishadic seer

eṣa u eva brahmaṇaspatiḥ | vāgvai brahma | tasyā eṣa patistasmādu brahmaṇaspatiḥ ||

He is also Brahmaṇaspati. Speech is brahman, and he is its lord; therefore he is Brahmaṇaspati.

Meaning today and context

Here brahman means the sacred word of the Veda, and breath is its master.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.21: the breath is also Brahmaṇaspati, the lord of speech called brahman (the sacred word).

1.3.22 Upanishadic seer

eṣa u eva sāma | vāgvai sāmaiṣa sā cāmaśceti tatsāmnaḥ sāmatvam | yadveva samaḥ pluṣiṇā samo maśakena samo nāgena sama ebhistribhirlokaiḥ samo'nena sarveṇa tasmādveva sāma | aśnute sāmnaḥ sāyujyaṃ salokatām | ya evametatsāma veda ||

He is also the sāman. Speech is sā, and this is ama: that is why the sāman is called sāman. Or else, because he is equal (sama) to a gnat, equal to a mosquito, equal to an elephant, equal to these three worlds, equal to this whole universe, therefore he is sāman. One who knows the sāman thus attains union with the sāman and shares its world.

Meaning today and context

The same life is present in the smallest insect and the largest animal. Seeing this sameness can soften how we look at other living beings.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.22: the breath is the sāman (chant); the name is explained as sā (speech) plus ama (breath), and as sama, 'equal', since breath is the same in a gnat, an elephant and the whole universe.

1.3.23 Upanishadic seer

eṣa u vā udgīthaḥ | prāṇo vā utprāṇena hīdaṃ sarvamuttabdham | vāgeva gīthā | ucca gīthā ceti | sa udgīthaḥ ||

He is the udgītha. Breath is ut, for by breath this whole world is held up (uttabdha). Speech is gīthā. Ut and gīthā: that is udgītha.

Meaning today and context

A ritual etymology: the chant is breath lifted into speech.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.23: the breath is the udgītha: ut is breath, which holds up all things, and gīthā is speech.

1.3.24 Upanishadic seer

On this, Brahmadatta Caikitāneya, while drinking King Soma, said: 'Let this king make my head fall off if Ayāsya Āṅgirasa chanted the udgītha with anything other than this.' For he chanted it with speech and with breath.

Meaning today and context

A ritual oath confirming the teaching: the true chant is made of speech and breath together.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.24: the ritualist Brahmadatta Caikitāneya, drinking soma, swears that Ayāsya Āṅgirasa chanted the udgītha with nothing but speech and breath.

Whoever knows the wealth (sva) of this sāman comes to have wealth. Its wealth is tone (svara). Therefore one about to serve as a priest should wish for tone in his voice, and should perform the priestly office with a voice rich in tone. That is why at a sacrifice people want to see a priest with a fine voice, as one who has wealth. One who knows the wealth of the sāman thus comes to have wealth.

Meaning today and context

Ritual guidance for chanters: the beauty of the voice is the chant's real wealth.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.25: the 'wealth' (sva) of the sāman is its tone (svara); so a priest should have a resonant voice, and people want such a priest at a sacrifice.

1.3.26 Upanishadic seer

tasya haitasya sāmno yaḥ suvarṇaṃ veda bhavati hāsya suvarṇam | tasya vai svara eva suvarṇam | bhavati hāsya suvarṇaṃ ya evametatsāmnaḥ suvarṇaṃ veda ||

Whoever knows the gold (suvarṇa) of this sāman comes to have gold. Its gold is tone. One who knows the gold of the sāman thus comes to have gold.

Meaning today and context

A wordplay on su-varṇa, 'good sound' and 'gold'.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.26: the 'gold' (suvarṇa) of the sāman is also its tone.

1.3.27 Upanishadic seer

Whoever knows the foundation of this sāman stands firm. Its foundation is speech, for it is established in speech that this breath is sung. Some say it is food.

Meaning today and context

Breath needs speech to be heard, as life needs food to stand.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.27: the foundation of the sāman is speech, in which breath is established when it is sung; some say it is food.

1.3.28 Upanishadic seer

Now the ascent of the purifying (pavamāna) chants. The prastotṛ priest begins the sāman; as he begins it, one should murmur these: 'From the unreal lead me to the real. From darkness lead me to light. From death lead me to immortality.' When it says 'From the unreal lead me to the real', the unreal is death and the real is immortality; it is saying, 'From death lead me to immortality, make me immortal.' When it says 'From darkness lead me to light', darkness is death and light is immortality; it is saying, 'From death lead me to immortality, make me immortal.' In 'From death lead me to immortality' nothing is hidden. Then in the remaining hymns he should chant food for himself; and so in them he should choose a boon, whatever desire he desires. The udgātṛ who knows this obtains by his chanting whatever he desires, for himself or for the sacrificer. This indeed wins worlds. There is no fear of being without a world for one who knows the sāman thus.

Meaning today and context

One of the best-loved prayers of India asks to be led from what is false to what is true, from confusion to clarity, from fear of death to what does not die. It can be anyone's prayer at a dark or uncertain time: not for a particular outcome, but to be led toward truth and light.

Brihadaranyaka 1.3.28: during the pavamāna chants the sacrificer murmurs the prayer 'asato mā sad gamaya', and the Upanishad explains it: the unreal and darkness are death, the real and light are immortality.
