Muṇḍaka 2, Khaṇḍa 2

2.2.1 Angiras to Shaunaka

āviḥ saṃnihitaṃ guhācaraṃ nāma mahatpadamatraitatsamarpitam | ejatprāṇannimiṣacca yadetajjānatha sadasadvareṇyaṃ paraṃ vijñānādyadvariṣṭhaṃ prajānām ||

Manifest, close at hand, moving in the secret place of the heart, it is called the great abode; in it is set all this that moves, breathes and blinks. Know that, which is being and non-being, the most desirable, the highest, beyond the understanding of creatures, the best of all.

Meaning today and context

What the seeker looks for is not far away or hidden in some distant heaven; it is described as nearer than anything, at the very centre of one's own life. The search turns inward.

Mundaka 2.2.1. Angiras continues teaching Shaunaka: Brahman is manifest and close at hand, moving in the hidden cave of the heart; everything that moves, breathes and blinks is set in it.

2.2.2 Angiras to Shaunaka

yadarcimadyadaṇubhyo'ṇu ca yasmim̐llokā nihitā lokinaśca | tadetadakṣaraṃ brahma sa prāṇastadu vāṅmanaḥ tadetatsatyaṃ tadamṛtaṃ tadveddhavyaṃ somya viddhi ||

That which is radiant, subtler than the subtle, in which the worlds and their inhabitants are set: that is this imperishable Brahman. It is breath, it is speech and mind. It is the true, it is the immortal. That is the target to be pierced, dear one; pierce it.

Meaning today and context

The verse names one aim behind all of life's activity: the real, the undying. It invites a person to make that the target of their attention, rather than scattering it everywhere.

Mundaka 2.2.2. Angiras describes Brahman as the luminous, subtlest reality in which all worlds rest, and tells Shaunaka that this is the target to be pierced.

2.2.3 Angiras to Shaunaka

dhanurgṛhītvaupaniṣadaṃ mahāstraṃ śaraṃ hyupāsā niśitaṃ sandhayīta | āyamya tadbhāvagatena cetasā lakṣyaṃ tadevākṣaraṃ somya viddhi ||

Taking up the great weapon, the bow of the Upanishad, fit to it the arrow sharpened by constant meditation. Drawing it back with a mind absorbed in that, pierce, dear one, that very target, the imperishable.

Meaning today and context

Teaching alone is like a bow without an arrow; practice alone is an arrow without a bow. Understanding, a mind sharpened by regular practice, and wholehearted focus have to come together to reach what one aims at.

Mundaka 2.2.3. Angiras begins the famous image of the bow and arrow: the Upanishad is the bow, the mind sharpened by meditation is the arrow, and the imperishable is the target.

2.2.4 Angiras to Shaunaka

praṇavo dhanuḥ śaro hyātmā brahma tallakṣyamucyate | apramattena veddhavyaṃ śaravattanmayo bhavet ||

Om is the bow, the self is the arrow, Brahman is said to be the target. It is to be pierced by one who is not careless; one should become one with it, like the arrow.

Meaning today and context

Heedlessness, drifting and half attention, is the one thing that makes the arrow miss. Whether in meditation or in any serious aim, full and careful attention lets a person become absorbed in what they are doing.

Mundaka 2.2.4. Angiras explains the image: Om is the bow, the self is the arrow, Brahman the target; it must be struck without heedlessness, becoming one with it like an arrow lodged in its mark.

2.2.5 Angiras to Shaunaka

yasmindyauḥ pṛthivī cāntarikṣamotaṃ manaḥ saha prāṇaiśca sarvaiḥ | tamevaikaṃ jānatha ātmānamanyā vāco vimuñcathāmṛtasyaiṣa setuḥ ||

In whom the sky, the earth and the space between are woven, and the mind together with all the life-breaths: know that one alone, the Self. Give up other words. This is the bridge to immortality.

Meaning today and context

There is a point where more talk, argument and reading stop helping and only direct attention to what one is helps. The verse asks a seeker to drop idle chatter and put their energy into that.

Mundaka 2.2.5. Angiras: the one Self in which sky, earth, mid-space and the mind with all the senses are woven is to be known alone; all other talk is to be let go, for this is the bridge to immortality.

2.2.6 Angiras to Shaunaka

arā iva rathanābhau saṃhatā yatra nāḍyaḥ | sa eṣo'ntaścarate bahudhā jāyamānaḥ | omityevaṃ dhyāyatha ātmānaṃ svasti vaḥ pārāya tamasaḥ parastāt ||

Where the channels come together like spokes in the hub of a wheel, there it moves within, being born in many forms. Meditate on the Self as Om. May you be well in crossing to the far shore beyond darkness.

The channels (nadis) here are part of a meditation image, not a breathing or medical practice; meditation methods are best learnt from a qualified teacher.

Meaning today and context

Beneath all the many roles and moods we pass through, there is one centre, like the hub that holds the spokes. Coming back to that centre in quiet attention is described as a crossing out of darkness, and the teacher sends his students off with a blessing.

Mundaka 2.2.6. Angiras: where the channels of the body meet like spokes in a hub, the Self moves within, appearing in many ways; meditate on it as Om. He blesses the students to cross beyond darkness.

2.2.7 Angiras to Shaunaka

yaḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvavidyasyaiṣa mahimā bhuvi | divye brahmapure hyeṣa vyomnyātmā pratiṣṭhitaḥ | manomayaḥ prāṇaśarīranetā pratiṣṭhito'nne hṛdayaṃ sannidhāya | tadvijñānena paripaśyanti dhīrā ānandarūpamamṛtaṃ yadvibhāti ||

He who knows all and understands all, whose greatness is this on earth: this Self is established in the space of the shining city of Brahman. Made of mind, leader of breath and body, he is established in food, having placed the heart there. By knowing it, the wise see fully what shines forth as bliss, as the immortal.

Meaning today and context

The same awareness that guides the body and mind is described as joy itself. Calm, steady people find that joy not by adding things to life but by seeing what is already at its heart.

Mundaka 2.2.7. Angiras: the all-knowing one whose glory fills the earth dwells in the space of the heart, the city of Brahman, guiding body and breath; the wise see it as bliss and the immortal.

2.2.8 Angiras to Shaunaka

bhidyate hṛdayagranthiśchidyante sarvasaṃśayāḥ | kṣīyante cāsya karmāṇi tasmindṛṣṭe parāvare ||

The knot of the heart is broken, all doubts are cut away, and one's deeds wear out, when that which is both high and low is seen.

Meaning today and context

Much of our inner tightness comes from confusion about who we are. When that is seen clearly, the knot of anxious grasping loosens, the endless doubting quietens, and past actions lose their grip on the mind.

Mundaka 2.2.8. One of the best-known verses of the Upanishad: when the highest and the lowest (Brahman) is seen, the knot of the heart breaks, doubts are cut and actions wear away.

2.2.9 Angiras to Shaunaka

hiraṇmaye pare kośe virajaṃ brahma niṣkalam | tacchubhraṃ jyotiṣāṃ jyotistadyadātmavido viduḥ ||

In the highest golden sheath is Brahman, stainless and without parts. It is pure, the light of all lights; it is what the knowers of the Self know.

Meaning today and context

Whatever stains a person's life, the verse points to something in them that is never stained. Remembering this can steady someone who feels defined by their mistakes.

Mundaka 2.2.9. Angiras describes Brahman in the innermost golden sheath: stainless, without parts, the light of lights, known by those who know the Self.

2.2.10 Angiras to Shaunaka

na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṃ nemā vidyuto bhānti kuto'yamagniḥ | tameva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṃ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṃ vibhāti ||

There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars; these lightnings do not shine, how then this fire? Everything shines only after it, as it shines; by its light all this is lit.

Meaning today and context

Everything we see, think and feel is known only because awareness is there to know it. Awareness is not one more lit object; it is the light by which everything else appears.

Mundaka 2.2.10 (also in Katha 5.15 and Shvetashvatara 6.14). The sun, moon, stars and lightning do not light up Brahman; everything shines only after it, by its light.

2.2.11 Angiras to Shaunaka

brahmaivedamamṛtaṃ purastādbrahma paścādbrahma dakṣiṇataścottareṇa | adhaścordhvaṃ ca prasṛtaṃ brahmaivedaṃ viśvamidaṃ variṣṭham ||

This immortal Brahman alone is in front, Brahman behind, Brahman to the south and to the north. It spreads below and above. Brahman alone is all this, this whole world, the best.

Meaning today and context

If the real is everywhere, then nothing and no one is outside it. This can soften the sense of being cut off, alone or surrounded by what is alien, and invite a more reverent way of seeing ordinary life.

Mundaka 2.2.11, the close of the second section: Brahman, the immortal, is in front, behind, right, left, below and above; this whole world is Brahman.
