Two birds, companions and close friends, cling to the same tree. One of them eats the sweet fig; the other, not eating, looks on.

Within each of us there is the one who chases, tastes, enjoys and suffers, and there is the quiet witness that only watches. Noticing that witness gives some room between oneself and every craving and hurt.
Mundaka 3.1.1 (also Rigveda 1.164.20 and Shvetashvatara 4.6). Angiras gives the image of the two birds on one tree: one eats the fruit, the other only watches.
On the same tree a person, sunk down and deluded, grieves because of helplessness. When he sees the other, the Lord who is worshipped, and sees 'this is his greatness', his sorrow is gone.
For someone in deep grief or despair, the loss comes first and must be acknowledged; this verse is not a reason to set mourning aside. If you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Much sorrow comes from feeling powerless and alone inside one's own life. Seeing something larger and steadier, whether as God or as one's deeper Self, does not undo every loss but can lift the sense of helplessness.
Mundaka 3.1.2 (also Shvetashvatara 4.7). Angiras explains the two birds: the individual, sunk in the tree of life, grieves in helplessness; when he sees the other, the Lord, and his greatness, his sorrow goes.
When the seer sees the golden-coloured maker, the Lord, the Person, the source of Brahma, then the knower, shaking off merit and sin, free of stain, attains the highest equality.
Going beyond merit and sin describes the freedom of one who has realised the Self; it is not permission to act without regard for right and wrong.
Meaning today and context
Even our good deeds can become a burden when we keep score of them. The verse points to a freedom beyond both pride in merit and weight of guilt, an evenness that sees all as one.
Mundaka 3.1.3. Angiras: when the seer sees the golden-hued maker, the Lord, the Person, the source of Brahma, he shakes off merit and sin and reaches the highest sameness.
This is the life that shines forth through all beings. Knowing it, the wise one does not go on talking. Playing in the Self, delighting in the Self, yet active: such a one is the best of those who know Brahman.
Meaning today and context
Real understanding shows in fewer words, not more, and in a joy that does not depend on outside things. Yet the best of the wise are not idle; their inner contentment goes together with active work in the world.
Mundaka 3.1.4. Angiras: this is the life that shines through all beings; one who knows it does not talk beyond the point, delights in the Self, and is still active; such a one is the best of Brahman-knowers.
This Self is to be gained by truthfulness, by discipline, by right knowledge and by brahmacarya, constantly. Within the body, made of light and pure, is the one whom the renunciants, their faults worn away, behold.
Brahmacarya and tapas mean restraint and discipline, not a demand for celibacy on a householder or for punishing the body.

Inner clarity is not a lucky accident; it grows from steady honesty, self-discipline, real understanding and restraint, kept up day after day. As faults wear away, what was always there becomes visible.
Mundaka 3.1.5. Angiras names the means: the Self is reached through truthfulness, discipline, right knowledge and constant brahmacarya; renunciants whose faults are worn away see it shining within the body.
Truth alone wins, not untruth. By truth is laid out the path of the gods, by which the sages, their desires fulfilled, ascend to where the highest treasure of truth is.

Lies can seem to win for a while, but they do not build a road anywhere worth going. Truthfulness, even when it costs something, is what keeps a life on a path that leads somewhere lasting.
Mundaka 3.1.6, the source of India's national motto. Angiras: truth alone wins, not untruth; by truth the path of the gods is laid, which sages free of desire travel to the supreme treasure of truth.
Vast and divine is that, its form beyond thought; subtler than the subtle it shines. Farther than the farthest, it is also near, here; in those who see, it is set right here in the secret place of the heart.

The deepest reality is beyond what the mind can picture, which makes it seem far away; yet it is nearest of all. Not being able to think it is no reason to think it absent.
Mundaka 3.1.7. Angiras: that reality is vast and divine, beyond thought, subtler than the subtle, farther than the far yet near, hidden in the cave of the heart of those who see.
It is not grasped by the eye, nor by speech, nor by the other senses, nor by austerity or ritual action. When one's nature is purified by the clarity of knowledge, then, meditating, one sees it, the one without parts.
Meaning today and context
No amount of outward effort, ritual or proving oneself reaches the deepest Self. What helps is a mind made clear and quiet, so that it can see what is already there.
Mundaka 3.1.8. Angiras: the Self is not grasped by the eye, by speech, by the other senses, by austerity or by ritual action; one whose being is purified by the clarity of knowledge sees it, the partless, in meditation.
This subtle Self is to be known by the mind, the Self in which breath has entered in five ways. The whole mind of creatures is woven through with the senses; when that is purified, this Self shines forth.
The fivefold breath is part of the Upanishad's account of the person, not a breathing exercise or medical advice.

Our mind is usually tangled up with the senses and their pulls. As it becomes clearer and less agitated, what we truly are can be noticed more easily.
Mundaka 3.1.9. Angiras: this subtle Self, into which breath has entered fivefold, is to be known by the mind; the whole mind of creatures is woven with the senses, and when it is purified the Self shines forth.
Whatever world one of purified nature brings to mind, and whatever desires he wishes for, that world he wins and those desires. Therefore one who seeks well-being should honour the one who knows the Self.
Honouring the wise is not a duty to give money, obedience or worship to anyone who claims spiritual powers; be wary of teachers who promise wishes fulfilled in return.
Meaning today and context
A clear and pure mind is powerful; its intentions tend to come true. The verse also asks us to respect people of real inner wisdom and learn from them.
Mundaka 3.1.10, the close of the section. Angiras: whatever world a person of pure mind thinks of and whatever desires he wishes for, he wins; so one who wants prosperity should honour the knower of the Self.
