3.2.1 Angiras to Shaunaka

sa vedaitatparamaṃ brahma dhāma yatra viśvaṃ nihitaṃ bhāti śubhram | upāsate puruṣaṃ ye hyakāmāste śukrametadativartanti dhīrāḥ ||

He knows this highest abode, Brahman, in which the whole world is set and shines brightly. The wise who, free of desire, worship that Person pass beyond this seed.

Meaning today and context

Worship done to get something keeps us inside the cycle of wanting. Devotion offered without bargaining is described as what truly frees.

Mundaka 3.2.1. Angiras: the knower of the Self knows the highest abode of Brahman in which the world rests and shines; the wise who worship that Person without desire pass beyond the seed of rebirth.

3.2.2 Angiras to Shaunaka

kāmānyaḥ kāmayate manyamānaḥ sa kāmabhirjāyate tatra tatra | paryāptakāmasya kṛtātmanastu ihaiva sarve pravilīyanti kāmāḥ ||

One who desires objects, brooding on them, is born here and there by those very desires. But for one whose desire is fulfilled, whose self is made whole, all desires dissolve right here.

Meaning today and context

Each desire we keep feeding pulls us into a new round of chasing. Satisfaction does not come from fulfilling every want, but from a wholeness inside in which wants lose their hold.

Mundaka 3.2.2. Angiras: one who keeps desiring, dwelling on desires, is born again and again through them; but for one whose desire is fulfilled and whose self is made whole, all desires dissolve here itself.

3.2.3 Angiras to Shaunaka

nāyamātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā śrutena | yamevaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhyastasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanūṃ svām ||

This Self is not gained by discourses, nor by intellect, nor by much learning. It is gained by the one whom it chooses; to that one this Self reveals its own form.

Meaning today and context

Clever arguments, degrees and many books do not by themselves bring inner realisation. It comes more like grace, to the one who is open and wholeheartedly seeks it, than as a reward for intellectual effort.

Mundaka 3.2.3 (also Katha 2.23). Angiras: the Self is not reached by lectures, cleverness or much learning; it is reached by the one it chooses, and to that one it reveals its own nature.

3.2.4 Angiras to Shaunaka

nāyamātmā balahīnena labhyo na ca pramādāttapaso vāpyaliṅgāt | etairupāyairyatate yastu vidvāṃstasyaiṣa ātmā viśate brahmadhāma ||

This Self is not gained by one without strength, nor through heedlessness, nor by austerity lacking its true mark. But the wise one who strives by these means, his self enters the abode of Brahman.

Strength here means inner resolve, not physical strength; the verse does not exclude anyone who is ill, disabled or physically weak.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual life needs inner strength, steady attention and practice joined with understanding. Weak resolve, distraction and discipline done only for show do not get far; sincere effort does.

Mundaka 3.2.4. Angiras: the Self is not reached by the weak, nor through carelessness, nor by austerity without its proper mark; the wise one who strives by these means enters the abode of Brahman.

3.2.5 Angiras to Shaunaka

saṃprāpyainamṛṣayo jñānatṛptāḥ kṛtātmāno vītarāgāḥ praśāntāḥ te sarvagaṃ sarvataḥ prāpya dhīrā yuktātmānaḥ sarvamevāviśanti ||

Having reached it, the sages, satisfied with knowledge, their selves made whole, free of passion and at peace, having attained the all-pervading on every side, wise and inwardly united, enter into the All.

Meaning today and context

The picture of the realised person is one of contentment, freedom from compulsive liking and disliking, and peace. Such people feel at home everywhere, not set apart from the world.

Mundaka 3.2.5. Angiras describes the sages who have reached the Self: content in knowledge, whole, free of passion, at peace; having reached the all-pervading everywhere, they enter into all.

3.2.6 Angiras to Shaunaka

vedāntavijñānasuniścitārthāḥ saṃnyāsayogādyatayaḥ śuddhasattvāḥ | te brahmalokeṣu parāntakāle parāmṛtāḥ parimucyanti sarve ||

Those who have well ascertained the meaning of the knowledge of Vedanta, the strivers purified through the yoga of renunciation, at the last end of time in the worlds of Brahman, become supremely immortal and are all set free.

Renunciation here is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; for most people it means inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Clear understanding joined with inner letting go is what frees. For most people, renunciation means loosening the grip of possessiveness and ego, not leaving home.

Mundaka 3.2.6. Angiras: renunciants who have firmly grasped the meaning of Vedanta and are purified by the discipline of renunciation are all freed in the worlds of Brahman at the final end.

3.2.7 Angiras to Shaunaka

gatāḥ kalāḥ pañcadaśa pratiṣṭhā devāśca sarve pratidevatāsu | karmāṇi vijñānamayaśca ātmā pare'vyaye sarve ekībhavanti ||

The fifteen parts go back to their foundations, and all the senses to their corresponding deities. His actions and the self made of understanding, all become one in the supreme, the imperishable.

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse pictures the end of a life as a homecoming, each part returning to where it came from and the self merging into the one. For someone thinking about death, it speaks of return and unity rather than loss.

Mundaka 3.2.7. Angiras describes the liberated one's end: the fifteen parts return to their sources, the senses to their deities, and actions and the self made of understanding all become one in the imperishable.

3.2.8 Angiras to Shaunaka

yathā nadyaḥ syandamānāḥ samudre' staṃ gacchanti nāmarūpe vihāya | tathā vidvānnāmarūpādvimuktaḥ parātparaṃ puruṣamupaiti divyam ||

As flowing rivers come to rest in the ocean, leaving behind name and form, so the knower, freed from name and form, reaches the divine Person, higher than the high.

Meaning today and context

Much of our anxiety comes from defending a name, a role and an image of ourselves. The image of the river reaching the sea suggests that letting go of that small identity is not a loss but a return to something vast.

Mundaka 3.2.8. Angiras gives the image of rivers: as flowing rivers vanish into the ocean, leaving name and form, so the knower, freed from name and form, reaches the divine Person beyond the highest.

3.2.9 Angiras to Shaunaka

sa yo ha vai tatparamaṃ brahma veda brahmaiva bhavati nāsyābrahmavitkule bhavati | tarati śokaṃ tarati pāpmānaṃ guhāgranthibhyo vimukto'mṛto bhavati ||

Whoever knows that supreme Brahman becomes Brahman itself. In his family no one is born who does not know Brahman. He crosses over sorrow, he crosses over sin; freed from the knots of the heart, he becomes immortal.

The line about one's family praises the influence of a wise person on their household; it does not mean wisdom or worth is inherited by birth, and it is never a reason to rank families.

Meaning today and context

Knowing who one truly is changes a person at the root: sorrow and guilt no longer define them, and the inner knots loosen. Such clarity also tends to shape the people around them and those who come after.

Mundaka 3.2.9. Angiras: whoever knows the supreme Brahman becomes Brahman; in his line no one is born who does not know Brahman; he crosses grief and sin and, freed from the knots of the heart, becomes immortal.

3.2.10 Narrator

tadetadṛcā'bhyuktam | kriyāvantaḥ śrotriyā brahmaniṣṭhāḥ svayaṃ juhvata ekarṣiṃ śraddhayantaḥ | teṣāmevaitāṃ brahmavidyāṃ vadeta śirovrataṃ vidhivadyaistu cīrṇam ||

This has been declared by a Rig verse: Those who perform the rites, are versed in the Veda, are devoted to Brahman, who themselves offer into the one seer-fire with faith, to them alone should one teach this knowledge of Brahman, to those by whom the vow of the head has been duly kept.

Qualification here is about sincerity, discipline and faith, not birth or caste; the verse is never a reason to exclude anyone from learning.

Meaning today and context

Deep teaching is best received by people who are already sincere, disciplined and serious about it. For a learner, the point is to prepare oneself with earnest practice and faith, not to look for shortcuts.

Mundaka 3.2.10. The Upanishad quotes a Rig verse on who should receive this teaching: those devoted to practice, learned in the Veda, intent on Brahman, who offer to the fire with faith and have kept the 'vow of the head' (śirovrata) properly.

3.2.11 Narrator

tadetatsatyamṛṣiraṅgirāḥ purovāca naitadacīrṇavrato'dhīte | namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyo namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyaḥ ||

This is the truth that the seer Angiras declared of old. One who has not kept the vow does not study it. Salutation to the supreme seers! Salutation to the supreme seers!

Meaning today and context

The Upanishad ends by honouring the teachers through whom this wisdom came down, and by reminding the student that such knowledge is received through commitment, not casual reading.

Mundaka 3.2.11, the closing of the Upanishad in the text's own voice: this truth the sage Angiras taught of old; one who has not kept the vow does not study it; salutations to the great seers.
