Om: this syllable is all this. Its explanation follows. What has been, what is and what will be: all of it is Om alone. And whatever else lies beyond the three times, that too is Om alone.

Om here is not just a sound to chant; it stands for the whole of what is, in time and beyond it. Sitting with Om can be a way of turning the mind from scattered parts to the whole.
The opening mantra of the Mandukya Upanishad: the seer declares that the syllable Om is all that exists, in every time and beyond time.
All this is indeed Brahman. This Self is Brahman. This Self has four quarters.

The famous phrase 'ayam atma brahma' says that what you most deeply are is not separate from the ground of everything. It can loosen the feeling of being a small, cut-off self struggling against the world.
The seer identifies the whole with Brahman and Brahman with the Self, and announces that this Self has four quarters, which the following mantras describe.
The first quarter is Vaishvanara, whose field is the waking state, whose awareness is turned outward, who has seven limbs and nineteen mouths, and who enjoys the gross [world].
Meaning today and context
Waking life, with its senses, objects and busy mind, is only one way awareness shows up. Seeing it as one 'quarter' among others makes room to notice the awareness that is present in it, not only the things it is busy with.
The first quarter of the Self: Vaishvanara, awareness in the waking state, turned outward and experiencing the gross world.
The second quarter is Taijasa, whose field is the dream state, whose awareness is turned inward, who has seven limbs and nineteen mouths, and who enjoys the subtle [world].

In dreams the mind makes a whole world from itself, and while it lasts it feels completely real. Noticing this can make us gentler with the worlds our thoughts and worries build while we are awake.
The second quarter of the Self: Taijasa, awareness in the dream state, turned inward and experiencing subtle, mind-made objects.
Where the sleeper desires nothing and sees no dream, that is deep sleep. The third quarter is Prajna, whose field is deep sleep: become one, a mass of awareness, made of bliss, enjoying bliss, whose mouth is thought.
Not advice about sleep disorders or sleep as an escape; persistent insomnia or oversleeping deserves medical care.
Meaning today and context
Every night, in deep sleep, all our problems, roles and desires drop away, and we wake saying 'I slept well'. The peace was not brought by anything we owned; it shows that rest from wanting is already within us.
The third quarter of the Self: Prajna, awareness in deep, dreamless sleep, where desire and dreams fall silent.
This is the Lord of all; this is the knower of all; this is the inner controller; this is the source of all, for it is the origin and the dissolution of beings.

What we touch in deep sleep is described here as the very ground everything comes from and returns to. Rest is not empty; it is a return to the source.
The seer describes Prajna, the deep-sleep quarter, as the Lord of all: the source from which beings arise and into which they dissolve.

Not aware of the inner, not aware of the outer, not aware of both, not a mass of awareness, not aware, not unaware; unseen, beyond all dealings, ungraspable, without marks, unthinkable, not to be named; its essence is the one certainty of the Self, in which the world comes to rest; peaceful, auspicious, non-dual: this they consider the fourth. That is the Self; that is what is to be known.
This is non-dual teaching about the nature of awareness. It is not a reason to neglect the body, family, work or treatment, and not a technique to replace care for one's mental health.
Meaning today and context
Moods, thoughts, dreams and even sleep come and go, but something is present through all of them. This mantra points to that steady awareness, which is not one more experience to chase but what every experience appears in. Recognising it can give a steadiness that does not depend on how the day is going.
The central mantra: the fourth (turiya) is described only by negation. It is not a further state but the Self itself, in which waking, dream and sleep appear.
This Self, in terms of the syllable, is Om. In terms of its measures (sounds): the quarters are the measures and the measures are the quarters, namely the sound a, the sound u and the sound m.
Meaning today and context
The Upanishad links the sound of Om to the states of our own experience, so chanting it can be a map: a for waking, u for dream, m for sleep. Chanting Om then becomes a way of attending to the whole of oneself.
The seer turns from the four quarters to the syllable Om: the Self, considered as a syllable, is Om, and its quarters are the sounds a, u and m.
jāgaritasthāno vaiśvānaraḥ akāraḥ prathamā mātrā āpterādimattvādvā | āpnoti ha vai sarvānkāmānādiśca bhavati ya evaṃ veda ||
Vaishvanara, whose field is the waking state, is the sound a, the first measure, because it pervades (āpti) or because it comes first (ādimattva). One who knows this obtains all desires and becomes the first.

Every word begins from the open sound 'a', and all of life begins from the waking world we share. The 'fruit' named here is the Upanishad's way of praising this meditation, not a promise of getting what we want.
The sound a is matched with Vaishvanara, the waking quarter, because it pervades and comes first; the mantra adds the fruit for one who knows this.
svapnasthānastaijasa ukāro dvitīyā mātrotkarṣādubhayatvādvā | utkarṣati ha vai jñānasaṃtatiṃ | samānaśca bhavati | nāsyābrahmavitkule bhavati ya evaṃ veda ||
Taijasa, whose field is the dream state, is the sound u, the second measure, because it is raised higher (utkarṣa) or because it is in between (ubhayatva). One who knows this raises the stream of knowledge and becomes even-minded; in his family no one is born who does not know Brahman.
Meaning today and context
The middle sound stands for the inner world of the mind, between outer waking and silent sleep. Understanding one's inner life is praised as something that steadies a person and is passed on to those around them.
The sound u is matched with Taijasa, the dream quarter, because it is higher or because it stands between a and m; the mantra adds the fruit for one who knows this.
suṣuptasthānaḥ prājño makāraḥ tṛtīyā mātrā miterapītervā | minoti ha vā idaṃ sarvamapītiśca bhavati ya evaṃ veda ||
Prajna, whose field is deep sleep, is the sound m, the third measure, because it measures (miti) or because [all] merges into it (apīti). One who knows this measures all this and becomes the place where all merges.
Meaning today and context
As Om closes on 'm', the lips shut and the sound folds back into silence, just as the day's experiences fold into sleep. Ending the chant with attention to that closing can be a simple way to let the mind settle.
The sound m is matched with Prajna, the deep-sleep quarter, because it measures or because everything merges in it; the mantra adds the fruit for one who knows this.
amātraścaturtho'vyavahāryaḥ prapañcopaśamaḥ śivo'dvaitaḥ | evamoṃkāra ātmaiva | saṃviśatyātmanātmānaṃ ya evaṃ veda ||
The fourth is without measure, beyond all dealings, the stilling of the world, auspicious, non-dual. Thus Om is the Self itself. One who knows this enters the Self by the Self.
This is non-dual teaching about the nature of awareness. It is not a reason to neglect the body, family, work or treatment, and not a technique to replace care for one's mental health.
Meaning today and context
After a, u and m comes silence, and the Upanishad says that silence is the truest part of Om. Resting in the quiet after the sound, without reaching for anything, is a way of coming home to oneself.
The closing mantra: the fourth, without any measure, is the silence beyond a-u-m; Om is thus the Self itself, and the one who knows this enters the Self by the Self.
