Adhyāya 3, Brāhmaṇa 8

3.8.1 Gargi to The brahmins

atha ha vācaknavyuvāca brāhmaṇā bhagavanto hantāhamimaṃ dvau praśnau prakṣyāmi | tau cenme vivakṣyati | na vai jātu yuṣmākamimaṃ kaścidbrahmodyaṃ jeteti | pṛccha gārgīti ||

Then Vacaknavi said: 'Venerable brahmins, I will now ask him two questions. If he answers them for me, none of you will ever defeat him in talk about Brahman.' 'Ask, Gargi.'

Meaning today and context

Gargi, a woman, steps forward in an assembly of the most learned men of her time and sets the terms of the test herself.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.1. After Uddalaka falls silent, Gargi Vacaknavi, who had questioned Yajnavalkya earlier (3.6), speaks to the assembled brahmins and announces two questions; this unit is hers apart from the closing 'Ask, Gargi'.

3.8.2 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

sā hovāca ahaṃ vai tvā yājñavalkya yathā kāśyo vā vaideho vograputra ujjyaṃ dhanuradhijyaṃ kṛtvā dvau bāṇavantau sapatnātivyādhinau haste kṛtvopottiṣṭhedevamevāhaṃ tvā dvābhyāṃ praśnābhyāmupodasthām | tau me brūhīti | pṛccha gārgīti ||

She said: 'Yajnavalkya, as a hero's son from Kashi or Videha strings his unstrung bow, takes in his hand two arrows that pierce the enemy, and rises to face him, so I have risen to face you with two questions. Answer them for me.' 'Ask, Gargi.'

Meaning today and context

Gargi questions with courage and precision, like an archer choosing two arrows. Asking hard questions openly, even of the most respected person in the room, is part of the search for truth, not disrespect.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.2. Gargi addresses Yajnavalkya with a warrior's image for her two questions; he replies 'Ask, Gargi.' The unit is almost wholly hers.

3.8.3 Gargi to Yajnavalkya

sā hovāca yadūrdhvaṃ yājñavalkya divo yadavākpṛthivyā yadantarā dyāvāpṛthivī ime yadbhūtaṃ ca bhavacca bhaviṣyaccetyācakṣate kasmiṃstadotaṃ ca protaṃ ceti ||

She said: 'Yajnavalkya, that which is above the sky and below the earth, that which is between sky and earth, that which people call past, present and future: on what is it woven, warp and weft?'

Meaning today and context

Gargi asks what everything, in all places and all times, finally rests on. It is the question behind 'what is the ground of my life?' when the familiar supports give way.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.3. Gargi's first question to Yajnavalkya (the unit is wholly hers): on what is all of space and time woven?

3.8.4 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

sa hovāca yadūrdhvaṃ gārgi divo yadavākpṛthivyā yadantarā dyāvāpṛthivī ime yadbhūtaṃ ca bhavacca bhaviṣyaccetyācakṣata ākāśe tadotaṃ ca protaṃ ceti ||

He said: 'Gargi, that which is above the sky and below the earth, that which is between sky and earth, that which people call past, present and future: it is woven, warp and weft, on space.'

Meaning today and context

The first answer is space, the open room in which everything happens. It is a true answer but not the last one; Gargi will push further.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.4. Yajnavalkya answers Gargi's first question: all of it is woven on space (akasha).

3.8.5 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

sā hovaca namaste'stu yājñavalkya yo ma etaṃ vyavoco'parasmai dhārayasveti pṛccha gārgīti ||

She said: 'Homage to you, Yajnavalkya, for you have answered this for me. Brace yourself for the other one.' 'Ask, Gargi.'

Meaning today and context

Gargi honours a good answer openly before pressing on. One can respect a person fully and still keep questioning them.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.5. Gargi bows to Yajnavalkya for his answer and warns him to prepare for her second question; he says 'Ask, Gargi.'

3.8.6 Gargi to Yajnavalkya

sā hovāca yadūrdhvaṃ yājñavalkya divo yadavākpṛthivyā yadantarā dyāvāpṛthivī ime yadbhūtaṃ ca bhavacca bhaviṣyaccetyācakṣate kasmiṃstadotaṃ ca protaṃ ceti ||

She said: 'Yajnavalkya, that which is above the sky and below the earth, that which is between sky and earth, that which people call past, present and future: on what is it woven, warp and weft?'

Meaning today and context

Asking the same question twice is Gargi's method: she makes sure the first answer is fixed before she asks what lies beneath it.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.6. Gargi (the unit is wholly hers) repeats her question to Yajnavalkya, to lead into the second.

3.8.7 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

sa hovāca yadūrdhvaṃ gārgi divo yadavākpṛthivyā yadantarā dyāvāpṛthivī ime yadbhūtaṃ ca bhavacca bhaviṣyaccetyācakṣata ākāśa eva tadotaṃ ca protaṃ ceti | kasminnu khalvākāśa otaśca protaśceti ||

He said: 'Gargi, that which is above the sky and below the earth, that which is between sky and earth, that which people call past, present and future: it is woven, warp and weft, on space alone.' 'On what, then, is space woven, warp and weft?'

Meaning today and context

Gargi's second arrow asks for the ground of the ground. A real question keeps asking 'and on what does that rest?' until it reaches what rests on nothing else.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.7. Yajnavalkya again answers 'on space', and Gargi asks her second question: on what is space itself woven?

3.8.8 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

He said: 'That, Gargi, is what the knowers of Brahman call the imperishable. It is neither coarse nor fine, neither short nor long, neither glowing like fire nor wet like water; it is without shadow and without darkness, without air and without space, without attachment, without taste or smell, without eyes or ears, without speech or mind, without energy or breath, without mouth, without body, with no inside and no outside. It eats nothing, and no one eats it.'

Meaning today and context

The deepest ground of things cannot be pictured; every description falls short, so the sage says only what it is not. It consumes nothing and nothing consumes it: whatever happens to us, something in us is never used up.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.8. Yajnavalkya answers Gargi's second question: space is woven on the imperishable (akshara), which he describes only by what it is not.

3.8.9 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

By the command of this imperishable, Gargi, the sun and moon stand apart, each held in place. By the command of this imperishable, Gargi, sky and earth stand apart, each held in place. By the command of this imperishable, Gargi, moments and hours, days and nights, fortnights and months, seasons and years stand held in place. By the command of this imperishable, Gargi, some rivers flow east from the snowy mountains and others west, each in its own direction. By the command of this imperishable, Gargi, people praise [those who give], the gods depend on the sacrificer, and the ancestors on the ladle of offering.

Meaning today and context

The regularity we take for granted, days following nights and rivers finding their way, is itself a sign of a deeper order. Life is not chaos at its root, even when our own days feel chaotic.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.9. Yajnavalkya tells Gargi that the whole order of the world, of sun and moon, time, rivers and human and ritual life, is held in place by the command of the imperishable.

3.8.10 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

yo vā etadakṣaramgārgyaviditvāsmiṃlloke juhoti yajate tapastapyate bahūni varṣasahasrāṇyantavadevāsya tadbhavati | yo vā etadakṣaramaviditvā gārgyaviditvāsmāllokātpraiti sa kṛpaṇaḥ | atha ya etadakṣaraṃ gārgi viditvāsmāllokātpraiti sa brāhmaṇaḥ ||

Gargi, whoever in this world makes offerings, performs sacrifices and practises austerities for many thousands of years without knowing this imperishable, for him all that comes to an end. Gargi, whoever departs from this world without knowing this imperishable is pitiable. But whoever departs from this world knowing this imperishable, Gargi, is a true brahmana.

'Brahmana' here means one who knows the imperishable, not a caste; the verse never ranks anyone by birth. 'Pitiable' is not a judgement to pass on anyone who has died.

Meaning today and context

Effort, ritual and discipline without understanding have a limit; their results run out. What makes a life rich is not how much we did, but whether we came to know what is lasting. Here 'brahmana' is defined by that knowing, not by birth.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.10. Yajnavalkya tells Gargi what knowing or not knowing the imperishable means for a human life.

3.8.11 Yajnavalkya to Gargi

That imperishable, Gargi, is the unseen seer, the unheard hearer, the unthought thinker, the unknown knower. There is no other seer than this, no other hearer than this, no other thinker than this, no other knower than this. On this very imperishable, Gargi, space is woven, warp and weft.

Meaning today and context

The ground of the whole universe and the awareness looking out of your eyes are the same. You do not need to go far to find what is lasting; it is what is doing the seeking.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.11. Yajnavalkya concludes his answer to Gargi: the imperishable is the seer and knower that is never seen or known, and on it space is woven.

3.8.12 Gargi to The brahmins

She said: 'Venerable brahmins, count yourselves lucky if you get away from him with a bow. None of you will ever defeat him in talk about Brahman.' Thereupon Vacaknavi fell silent.

Meaning today and context

Gargi, who led the challenge, is the first to say honestly that the answer was beyond dispute. Conceding a truth gracefully is as much a part of inquiry as challenging it.

Brihadaranyaka 3.8.12. Gargi (the unit is wholly hers) tells the assembled brahmins that no one can defeat Yajnavalkya, and falls silent.
