3.7.1 Yajnavalkya to Uddalaka Aruni

Then Uddalaka Aruni questioned him. 'Yajnavalkya,' he said, 'we were living among the Madras, in the house of Patanchala Kapya, studying the sacrifice. His wife was possessed by a gandharva. We asked him, "Who are you?" He said, "Kabandha Atharvana." He said to Patanchala Kapya and to the sacrificers: "Kapya, do you know that thread on which this world, the next world and all beings are strung together?" Patanchala Kapya said, "I do not know it, sir." He said to Patanchala Kapya and the sacrificers: "Kapya, do you know that inner controller who controls from within this world, the next world and all beings?" Patanchala Kapya said, "I do not know him, sir." He said to Patanchala Kapya and the sacrificers: "Kapya, whoever knows that thread and that inner controller knows Brahman, knows the worlds, knows the gods, knows the Vedas, knows the self, knows everything." So he told them, and I know it. If you, Yajnavalkya, drive away the cows meant for the knower of Brahman without knowing that thread and that inner controller, your head will shatter.' 'I do know that thread and that inner controller, Gautama.' 'Anyone can say "I know, I know." Tell us how you know it.'

'Your head will shatter' is the debate's old formula for staking everything on one's claim; it is not a threat to anyone who questions or doubts.

Meaning today and context

Uddalaka asks the two questions behind every search for meaning: what holds everything together, and what guides us from within? He also refuses a mere claim of knowing: 'Anyone can say "I know." Show me how.'

Brihadaranyaka 3.7.1. At Janaka's debate, Uddalaka Aruni (who speaks almost all of this unit) tells Yajnavalkya of a spirit that once spoke through a woman's mouth and asked about the 'thread' and the 'inner controller', and challenges Yajnavalkya to explain them.

3.7.2 Yajnavalkya to Uddalaka Aruni

He said: 'Wind, Gautama, is that thread. By wind as the thread, Gautama, this world, the next world and all beings are strung together. That is why, Gautama, they say of a man who has died, "his limbs have come loose": for by wind as the thread, Gautama, they are strung together.' 'That is so, Yajnavalkya. Now describe the inner controller.'

Meaning today and context

The 'thread' is the life-breath that holds a body and a world together; when it goes, the parts fall apart. The text then moves deeper: beyond what holds things together is what guides them from within.

Brihadaranyaka 3.7.2. Yajnavalkya answers Uddalaka's first question: the thread is wind (vayu). Uddalaka accepts and asks him to describe the inner controller.

3.7.3 Yajnavalkya to Uddalaka Aruni

Meaning today and context

The earth does not know what moves it, yet something steadies it from within. The Upanishad says the same presence is your own deepest self: you are not only the parts you can see, but what quietly guides them.

Brihadaranyaka 3.7.3. Yajnavalkya begins describing the inner controller (antaryamin) to Uddalaka Aruni, starting with the earth; the same refrain follows for each power of nature (3.7.3-14).

Brihadaranyaka 3.7.23. Yajnavalkya completes the list with semen (the power of procreation) and sums up the inner controller for Uddalaka Aruni, who then falls silent.
