Now Yajnavalkya had two wives, Maitreyi and Katyayani. Of the two, Maitreyi was one who discoursed on Brahman, while Katyayani then had only such understanding as women commonly had. Now Yajnavalkya was about to take up another way of life.
The phrase about Katyayani having 'a woman's understanding' reflects its time and is not the app's view; it must never be used to belittle women's minds. Maitreyi in the same verse is a woman who seeks Brahman. Yajnavalkya first settles his property between his wives before leaving; this is not advice to abandon a spouse or family. For most people renunciation means inner detachment.

Maitreyi stands out as a woman who seeks the highest knowledge, and the text honours her as a brahmavadini, one who speaks of Brahman.
Brihadaranyaka 4.5.1. The narrator introduces Yajnavalkya's two wives as he prepares to leave household life; this retells the dialogue of 2.4.
'Maitreyi,' said Yajnavalkya, 'I am about to go forth from this place. Come, let me make a settlement between you and Katyayani.'

Even when stepping away from a role, Yajnavalkya first takes care of those who depend on him. Leaving well means providing for others.
Brihadaranyaka 4.5.2. Yajnavalkya tells Maitreyi he is about to leave home as a renunciant and offers to divide his property between her and Katyayani.
Maitreyi said: 'Sir, if this whole earth, filled with wealth, were mine, would I become immortal by it, or not?' 'No,' said Yajnavalkya. 'Your life would be just like the life of people who have every comfort. But of immortality there is no hope through wealth.'
Not a rejection of earning or saving; the verse is about what wealth cannot give.

Money can make life comfortable, and that is not nothing. But it cannot answer the deepest questions or still the deepest fears; for that one has to look elsewhere.
Brihadaranyaka 4.5.3. Maitreyi asks Yajnavalkya whether the whole earth full of wealth would make her immortal; he answers that wealth gives a comfortable life but no hope of immortality.

Brihadaranyaka 4.5.4. Maitreyi replies to Yajnavalkya that she has no use for what will not make her immortal, and asks him to teach her what he knows.

For where there is duality, as it were, there one sees another, one smells another, one tastes another, one speaks to another, one hears another, one thinks of another, one touches another, one knows another. But where everything has become just one's own self, then by what and whom would one see, by what and whom would one smell, taste, speak to, hear, think of, touch or know? By what would one know that by which one knows all this? This self is 'not this, not this'. It is ungraspable, for it is not grasped; indestructible, for it is not destroyed; unattached, for it does not cling; unbound, it does not tremble or come to harm. By what, my dear, would one know the knower? Now you have been taught, Maitreyi. This, my dear, is what immortality is. Having said this, Yajnavalkya went away.
A teaching on the self, not a reason to withdraw from people, work or treatment. Yajnavalkya's leaving follows his provision for his wives.
Meaning today and context
You can never stand outside your own awareness to look at it, because you are it. Whatever can be pointed to, 'not this, not this', is not the deepest you; that which cannot be harmed or held is.
Brihadaranyaka 4.5.15. Yajnavalkya completes his teaching to Maitreyi: where all has become the self, there is no other to see or know; the self is 'not this, not this', and the knower cannot be known as an object. Then he leaves.
