When this self grows weak and sinks, as it were, into bewilderment, the vital powers gather around it. Taking into itself these particles of light, it goes down into the heart. When the person in the eye turns back and away, one no longer knows forms.

At the end, the powers we rely on, sight and the rest, draw back into something more central. The text invites us to ask what that centre is, which the senses only served.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.1. Continuing from 4.3, Yajnavalkya describes to King Janaka what happens when a person is dying: the senses withdraw into the heart.

'He is becoming one; he does not see,' they say. 'He is becoming one; he does not smell,' they say; 'he does not taste… he does not speak… he does not hear… he does not think… he does not touch… he does not perceive,' they say. Then the tip of his heart lights up, and by that light the self departs, through the eye, or the head, or other parts of the body. As it departs, the life-breath departs after it; as the breath departs, all the vital powers depart after it. It becomes conscious and goes on to consciousness. Knowledge and deeds take hold of it, and its past experience too.

What we have learned and what we have done do not simply vanish; the text says they go with us. It is a reason to care about who we are becoming now, not a cause for dread.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.2. Yajnavalkya tells Janaka how the self leaves the body at death, and that knowledge, deeds and past experience go with it.
As a caterpillar, reaching the tip of a blade of grass, reaches out to another foothold and draws itself over to it, so this self, having struck down this body and left it unconscious, reaches out to another foothold and draws itself over to it.

The image is of continuity: one support is let go only as another is taken. Life, as the text sees it, moves on rather than simply stopping.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.3. Yajnavalkya gives Janaka the image of a caterpillar crossing from one blade of grass to the next for the self passing to a new body.
As a goldsmith takes a piece of gold and fashions another, newer and more beautiful form, so this self, having struck down this body and left it unconscious, makes for itself another, newer and more beautiful form: that of the ancestors, or of the gandharvas, or of the gods, or of Prajapati, or of Brahma, or of other beings.

The material stays; the shape changes. The verse sees the self as something that keeps taking form, which can soften the fear that death is pure loss.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.4. Yajnavalkya compares the self taking a new form to a goldsmith reshaping gold into something newer and finer.
This self is indeed Brahman, made of understanding, made of mind, made of breath, made of sight, made of hearing, made of earth, water, wind, space, made of light and of no light, of desire and of no desire, of anger and of no anger, of dharma and of no dharma; it is made of everything. That is what is meant by 'made of this, made of that'. As one acts, as one conducts oneself, so one becomes. Doing good, one becomes good; doing evil, one becomes evil. One becomes virtuous by virtuous action, bad by bad action. And so they say: 'A person is made of desire.' As is his desire, so is his resolve; as is his resolve, so is the deed he does; and what deed he does, that he attains.
This describes how actions shape what one becomes; it is not fatalism, and not a judgement that anyone's suffering is deserved.

On this there is a verse: 'Attached, a man goes with his deeds to the very thing on which his inner self, his mind, is set. Having reached the end of whatever deeds he did here, he returns from that world to this world, back to action.' So it is with the man who desires. Now the man who does not desire: who is without desire, free of desire, whose desires are fulfilled, whose desire is the self, his vital powers do not depart. Being Brahman itself, he goes to Brahman.
This describes how actions shape what one becomes; it is not fatalism, and not a judgement that anyone's suffering is deserved.

Where the mind is fixed, there we keep going back, like a craving that pulls us into the same loop. Freedom comes not from getting everything, but from wanting what is already whole in us.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.6. Yajnavalkya quotes a verse to Janaka: the one who desires returns to action again and again; the one free of desire, whose only desire is the self, becomes Brahman.
On this there is a verse: 'When all the desires that lodge in one's heart are let go, then the mortal becomes immortal and attains Brahman here.' As a snake's cast-off skin lies dead on an anthill, so lies this body. But this bodiless, immortal life is Brahman itself, is light itself. [Janaka of Videha said:] 'Sir, I give you a thousand cows.'

Immortality here is not living forever but being free, now, of the cravings that bind the heart. The body is like a skin we wear; who we are is not used up with it.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.7. Yajnavalkya quotes a verse to Janaka on release from desire and compares the discarded body to a snake's slough; Janaka responds by offering a thousand cows.
On this there are verses: 'There is a narrow, ancient path stretching far; it has touched me, I have found it myself. By it the wise, the knowers of Brahman, go up from here to the heavenly world, set free.'

The path to freedom is old and narrow, but it can be found by a person for themselves. Inner truth has to be discovered, not just inherited.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.8. Yajnavalkya quotes verses to Janaka on the ancient, subtle path by which knowers of Brahman go free.
In it, they say, there is white and blue, yellow, green and red. This path was found by Brahman; by it goes the knower of Brahman, the doer of good, the one made of light.

Much of our anxiety comes from treating ourselves as only a body with needs to protect. Knowing a deeper self does not mean neglecting the body, but it loosens the constant fretting around it.

Brihadaranyaka 4.4.12. A verse: one who truly knows the self has no reason to burn with anxiety over the body.

Brihadaranyaka 4.4.19. A verse: there is no real multiplicity; one who sees only diversity goes from death to death.
Knowing that alone, the wise seeker of Brahman should make it his understanding. He should not dwell on many words, for that is mere weariness of speech.

Brihadaranyaka 4.4.21. A verse: having known the self, the wise should cultivate insight and not get lost in many words.
This great, unborn self is the one made of understanding among the vital powers. It lies in the space within the heart: the controller of all, the lord of all, the ruler of all. It does not become greater by good action, nor any less by bad action. It is the lord of all, the sovereign of beings, the protector of beings. It is the dike that holds these worlds apart so that they do not run together. Brahmins seek to know it by reciting the Veda, by sacrifice, by giving, by austerity and fasting. Knowing it alone, one becomes a sage. Wishing for it alone as their world, wandering ascetics go forth.
'Untouched by good or bad deeds' is about the self, not permission to act badly. Fasting and austerity: not medical advice. Going forth as a renunciant is not advice to abandon family or responsibilities; 'brahmin' means by conduct, not birth.

Your deepest self is not made bigger by praise or success, nor smaller by failure or mistakes. Study, giving and discipline are ways of coming to know it, not ways of earning worth.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.22. Yajnavalkya tells Janaka that the great unborn self in the heart is the lord of all, untouched by good or bad deeds, and is what seekers try to know by study, sacrifice, giving and austerity.
This is stated in a Rig verse: 'This is the eternal greatness of a knower of Brahman: it does not grow by action, nor does it become less. One should know its footing; knowing it, one is not stained by evil action.' Therefore, one who knows this, becoming calm, self-controlled, withdrawn, patient and collected, sees the self in himself and sees all as the self. Evil does not overcome him; he overcomes all evil. Evil does not burn him; he burns away all evil. Free from evil, free from stain, free from doubt, he becomes a true brahmin. 'This is the world of Brahman, Your Majesty, and you have been brought to it,' said Yajnavalkya. [Janaka:] 'Sir, I give you the people of Videha, and myself along with them, to serve you.'
'Brahmin' here means one who knows Brahman, by conduct and understanding, never by birth. Janaka's offer of himself as a servant is gratitude to a teacher, not a model for handing oneself or one's property over to anyone.

Calm, self-control, letting go, patience and a collected mind are named here as the ground for seeing clearly. They are practical qualities anyone can grow, and they make guilt and doubt lose their grip.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.23. Yajnavalkya quotes a Rig verse and tells Janaka that one who knows this becomes calm, controlled and patient and sees the self in all; Janaka, taught, offers his kingdom and himself in service.
sa vā eṣa mahānaja ātmājaro'maro'mṛto'bhayo brahma | abhayaṃ vai brahma | abhayaṃ hi vai brahma bhavati ya evaṃ veda ||
This great, unborn self is unageing, undying, immortal, fearless: it is Brahman. Brahman is fearlessness itself. Whoever knows this becomes the fearless Brahman.
Meaning today and context
Fear clings to what ages and dies. Knowing yourself as something deeper than that is the root of real fearlessness, in illness, ageing and loss.
Brihadaranyaka 4.4.25. Yajnavalkya closes the teaching to Janaka: the self is fearless Brahman, and whoever knows this becomes fearless.
