Vallī 4 (2.1)

2.1.1 Yama to Nachiketa

parāñci khāni vyatṛṇatsvayaṃbhūstasmātparāṅpaśyati nāntarātman | kaściddhīraḥ pratyagātmānamaikṣadāvṛttacakṣuramṛtatvamicchan ||

The Self-existent pierced the openings of the senses outward; therefore one looks outward, not at the Self within. Some wise person, seeking immortality, turned his eyes inward and saw the inner Self.

Meaning today and context

It is natural that we are drawn outward, to screens, other people's opinions, things to get. That's how we're built. But real steadiness comes from turning attention inward now and then, which few people try.

Yama opens the fourth vallī (traditionally 2.1): the senses were made to turn outward, so people look outward; only a rare steady person turns the gaze inward and sees the Self.

2.1.2 Yama to Nachiketa

parācaḥ kāmānanuyanti bālāste mṛtyoryanti vitatasya pāśam | atha dhīrā amṛtatvaṃ viditvā dhruvamadhruveṣviha na prārthayante ||

The childish run after outward desires and walk into the snare of death spread wide. But the wise, knowing immortality, do not seek the constant here among things that are not constant.

Meaning today and context

Looking for lasting security or happiness in things that change, money, status, approval, sets us up for disappointment. Enjoy them, but don't ask them to be permanent.

Yama: the childish chase outward desires and fall into death's wide net; the wise, knowing what is immortal, do not seek the permanent among impermanent things.

2.1.3 Yama to Nachiketa

yena rūpaṃ rasaṃ gandhaṃ śabdānsparśāṃśca maithunān | etenaiva vijānāti kimatra pariśiṣyate | etadvai tat ||

That by which one knows form, taste, smell, sounds, touches and the pleasures of love: by this alone one knows. What is left over here? This, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

Every experience, pleasant or painful, is known by the same awareness. Instead of only chasing experiences, notice the one who knows them all; that awareness is what you are.

Yama: that by which one knows form, taste, smell, sound, touch and sexual pleasure, what remains apart from it? This is that Self.

2.1.4 Yama to Nachiketa

svapnāntaṃ jāgaritāntaṃ cobhau yenānupaśyati | mahāntaṃ vibhumātmānaṃ matvā dhīro na śocati ||

That by which one perceives both the dream state and the waking state: knowing it as the great, all-pervading Self, the wise person does not grieve.

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and deserves care; this verse does not ask you to stop mourning. If grief feels unbearable, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Your dreams change and your waking days change, but the one who witnesses both stays the same. Resting in that steady awareness takes the sharpest edge off sorrow, though it does not mean we stop feeling.

Yama: knowing the great, all-pervading Self by which one sees both dream and waking, the wise person does not grieve.

2.1.5 Yama to Nachiketa

Whoever knows this honey-eater, the living Self close at hand, as the lord of what has been and what will be, no longer shrinks away from it. This, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

The self that tastes life's sweetness and bitterness is not separate from what governs past and future. Knowing that removes a kind of fear, the urge to hide from ourselves or from life.

Yama: one who knows this Self, the experiencer, the living self close at hand, as the lord of past and future, no longer shrinks from anything.

2.1.6 Yama to Nachiketa

yaḥ pūrvaṃ tapaso jātamadbhyaḥ pūrvamajāyata | guhāṃ praviśya tiṣṭhantaṃ yo bhūtebhirvyapaśyata | etadvai tat ||

He who was born of old from austerity, who was born before the waters, who entered the cave of the heart and dwells there, who looked out through beings: this, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

The same first source from which everything arose is present in each heart, seeing through each of our eyes. You are not cut off from the origin of things.

Yama identifies the Self with the first-born of creation, born of austerity before the waters, who abides in the cave of the heart and looks out through beings.

2.1.7 Yama to Nachiketa

yā prāṇena saṃbhavati aditirdevatāmayī | guhāṃ praviśya tiṣṭhantīṃ yā bhūtebhirvyajāyata | etadvai tat ||

She who comes into being with the breath of life, Aditi, made of the gods, who entered the cave of the heart and dwells there, who was born through beings: this, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

The boundless power that gives life to all things, imagined as the mother of the gods, is also within you. The divine is described in many forms, male and female, because no single form contains it.

Yama identifies the Self with Aditi, the boundless goddess who comes into being with the breath of life, made of all gods, dwelling in the cave of the heart.

2.1.8 Yama to Nachiketa

araṇyornihito jātavedā garbha iva subhṛto garbhiṇībhiḥ | divediva īḍyo jāgṛvadbhirhaviṣmadbhirmanuṣyebhiragniḥ | etadvai tat ||

Jātavedas, the fire hidden in the two fire-sticks, well guarded like the embryo by pregnant women, to be praised day after day by wakeful people bearing offerings: this, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

Like fire latent in wood until it is kindled, the Self is present in us waiting to be awakened through daily care and attention. Tending it is like tending a flame.

Yama identifies the Self with Agni, the fire hidden in the two fire-sticks like an embryo in the womb, worshipped daily by watchful people with offerings.

2.1.9 Yama to Nachiketa

yataścodeti sūryo astaṃ yatra ca gacchati | taṃ devāḥ sarve arpitāstadu nātyeti kaścana | etadvai tat ||

That from which the sun rises and into which it goes to set, in it all the gods are fixed; no one ever passes beyond it. This, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

All powers, even the sun's, rise from and return to one source. Whatever rises and sets in our lives, that ground remains.

Yama: that from which the sun rises and into which it sets, in which all the gods are fixed and which no one goes beyond, is the Self.

2.1.10 Yama to Nachiketa

yadeveha tadamutra yadamutra tadanviha | mṛtyoḥ sa mṛtyumāpnoti ya iha nāneva paśyati ||

Whatever is here, that is there; whatever is there, that is here as well. From death to death goes he who sees here as if there were many.

This verse is about the Self that does not die, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about death or ending your life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When we see ourselves as fundamentally separate from others and from the sacred, we live in constant comparison, loss and fear. Seeing the one reality in all softens that.

Yama: what is here is also there, and what is there is also here; whoever sees multiplicity here goes from death to death.

2.1.11 Yama to Nachiketa

manasaivedamāptavyaṃ neha nānāsti kiṃcana | mṛtyoḥ sa mṛtyuṃ gacchati ya iha nāneva paśyati ||

By the mind alone is this to be attained: there is no diversity here whatever. From death to death goes he who sees here as if there were many.

This verse is about the Self that does not die, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about death or ending your life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Unity is not found by travelling somewhere; it is realised through a purified, attentive mind. Practice of the mind, not external change, opens this view.

Yama repeats the teaching: this is to be attained by the mind alone; there is no diversity here at all.

2.1.12 Yama to Nachiketa

The Person the size of a thumb dwells in the midst of the body, lord of what has been and what will be. One does not shrink away from him. This, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

The image of a small light in the heart helps make the Self feel near rather than abstract. What rules all time is not far away; it is right at the centre of you.

Yama: the Person the size of a thumb dwells in the middle of the body; knowing him as lord of past and future, one no longer shrinks away.

2.1.13 Yama to Nachiketa

aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo jyotiriva adhūmakaḥ | īśāno bhūtabhavyasya sa evādya sa u śvaḥ | etadvai tat ||

The Person the size of a thumb is like a flame without smoke, lord of what has been and what will be. He alone is today, and he alone tomorrow. This, truly, is that.

Meaning today and context

Moods, circumstances and fortunes change from day to day, but the inner light is the same today and tomorrow. When the future feels uncertain, there is something in you that will still be there.

Yama continues: the thumb-sized Person is like a smokeless flame, lord of past and future; he is the same today and tomorrow.

2.1.14 Yama to Nachiketa

yathodakaṃ durge vṛṣṭaṃ parvateṣu vidhāvati | evaṃ dharmānpṛthakpaśyaṃstānevānu vidhāvati ||

As water rained on a rugged height runs off down the mountainsides, so one who sees things as separate runs after them.

Meaning today and context

A scattered view of life leads to a scattered life, pulled in every direction like water down a hillside. Seeing what connects things brings the energy back together.

Yama: as rain falling on rough heights runs off down the mountains, so one who sees things as separate runs after them.

2.1.15 Yama to Nachiketa

yathodakaṃ śuddhe śuddhamāsiktaṃ tādṛgeva bhavati | evaṃ munervijānata ātmā bhavati gautama ||

As pure water poured into pure water becomes just the same, so, Gautama, becomes the self of the silent sage who knows.

Meaning today and context

When understanding is clear, there is no struggle to merge with the truth; like water into water, it simply happens. Inner purity removes the feeling of separation.

Yama, addressing Naciketas as Gautama: as pure water poured into pure water becomes just that, so becomes the self of the sage who knows.
