dve akṣare brahmapare tvanante vidyāvidye nihite yatra gūḍhe | kṣaraṃ tvavidyā hyamṛtaṃ tu vidyā vidyāvidye īśate yastu so'nyaḥ ||
In the imperishable, infinite, supreme Brahman two things lie hidden: knowledge and ignorance. Ignorance is the perishable; knowledge is the immortal. But He who rules over both knowledge and ignorance is another, beyond them.

Our knowing and our not-knowing both sit within something larger. Even our confusion is not outside God; and the One who holds both is not limited by either.
The fifth chapter opens with the sage's teaching on knowledge and ignorance, both hidden in the infinite Brahman, and the Lord who rules over both.
yo yoniṃ yonimadhitiṣṭhatyeko viśvāni rūpāṇi yonīśca sarvāḥ | ṛṣiṃ prasūtaṃ kapilaṃ yastamagre jñānairbibharti jāyamānaṃ ca paśyet ||
He who alone presides over every womb, over all forms and all sources; who in the beginning bore with knowledge the seer, the tawny one (kapila) who was brought forth, and watched him as he was born.

Wisdom itself has a source. Whatever we learn, from teachers or experience, is ultimately a gift that comes from beyond us.
The sage describes the one who presides over every source and form, and who nourished with knowledge the first-born 'tawny seer' (kapila ṛṣi).
Spreading out each net in many ways, this God draws it back in this field. Having created the lords again, the great Self, the ruler, exercises lordship over all.
Meaning today and context
Creation and dissolution are one movement, like a fisherman casting and drawing in a net. Beginnings and endings in our own lives belong to the same rhythm.
The sage describes God spreading and gathering in each net of existence in this field (the world), creating the lords and ruling over all.
As the sun shines, lighting up all the quarters, above, below and across, so that God, the blessed, the adorable, alone governs all sources and their inherent natures.
Meaning today and context
Like sunlight that falls on everyone, the divine presence does not pick favourites. Every nature, every temperament, is lit by the same source.
The sage compares God to the sun lighting every direction; in the same way He alone governs all sources and their natures.
He, the womb of all, who ripens each thing's own nature and brings to its full change all that can be ripened; the One who governs this whole universe and assigns all the qualities (guṇas) to their work.
Meaning today and context
Growth takes time; things ripen according to their nature. Patience with our own slow change, and others', is in keeping with how the world is made.
The sage says the source of all ripens each thing's nature and brings everything to its full development, distributing the guṇas.
tadvedaguhyopaniṣatsu gūḍhaṃ tadbrahmā vedate brahmayoniṃ | ye pūrvaṃ devā ṛṣayaśca tadviduste tanmayā amṛtā vai babhūvuḥ ||
That is hidden in the Upanishads, the secret part of the Vedas. Brahmā knows it as the source of Brahman (the Veda). The gods and seers of old who knew it became one with it and became immortal.

The deepest teaching is not on the surface of religion; it is in its quiet, inward heart. Those who truly know it do not just hold an idea but become what they know.
The sage says this reality is hidden in the Upanishads, the secret of the Vedas; the gods and seers of old who knew it became one with it and immortal.
guṇānvayo yaḥ phalakarmakartā kṛtasya tasyaiva sa copabhoktā | sa viśvarūpastriguṇastrivartmā prāṇādhipaḥ saṃcarati svakarmabhiḥ ||
He who is bound up with the qualities, who does deeds for their fruit, is also the one who enjoys what he has done. Taking all forms, made of the three qualities, travelling the three paths, the lord of the life-breaths wanders according to his own actions.
Karma here is about one's own choices. It is never a reason to blame people for their illness, poverty, or suffering.
Meaning today and context
We reap what we do; the restless round of our life is shaped largely by our own choices. That is sobering, but also hopeful: what our actions bind, our actions can also begin to loosen.
The sage turns to the individual soul: joined with the qualities, it acts for results, enjoys them, and wanders by its own deeds along three paths.
The size of a thumb, bright like the sun, joined with intention and the sense of 'I': through the quality of the intellect and the quality of the body, this other (individual self) is seen as tiny as the point of an awl.
Meaning today and context
The self in us is radiant, yet it appears small because it is wrapped in our intentions and our ego. Our sense of being small comes from what we identify with, not from what we are.
The sage describes the individual self as thumb-sized, bright as the sun, joined with intention and ego, and seen as tiny as an awl's point.
vālāgraśatabhāgasya śatadhā kalpitasya ca | bhāgo jīvaḥ sa vijñeyaḥ sa cānantyāya kalpate ||
As a part of the tip of a hair split a hundred times, and that again a hundred times: so should the individual soul be known; and yet it is fit for infinity.

However small or insignificant you feel, the text says what you are is capable of the infinite. Feeling tiny and being limitless are not opposites.
The sage says the individual soul is like a hundredth of a hundredth of a hair's tip, yet it is fit for infinity.
By intention, touch, sight and delusion, and by food, water and rain, the self grows and is born. The embodied one, in due order, takes on forms in different places according to his deeds.

What we take in, through food, the senses and our desires, shapes who we become. Paying attention to what we feed body and mind is part of spiritual life.
The sage describes how the embodied self, by thoughts, touch, sight and delusion, and by food and drink, grows and is reborn in forms according to its deeds.
Many forms, gross and subtle, the embodied one chooses by its own qualities. By the qualities of its actions and of its self, the cause of its joining with them is seen to be another.

Our habits and qualities pull us toward the lives we end up in, yet the text also points to a larger cause beyond our own doing. We are responsible, but not alone.
The sage says the embodied self chooses many gross and subtle forms by its own qualities; the cause of its union with them is seen as another.
Without beginning and without end, in the midst of the chaos, the creator of everything, of many forms, the one who encircles the whole universe: knowing God, one is freed from all fetters.
Meaning today and context
Freedom comes not from escaping the mess of life but from recognising what holds it. The same God who is behind the chaos is the one who frees us within it.
The sage repeats the refrain: knowing the beginningless, endless creator in the midst of chaos, one is freed from all fetters.

He who is grasped by the heart's feeling, who is called 'without a nest' (bodiless), the maker of being and non-being, Shiva, the auspicious, God who brings forth the parts of creation: those who know Him leave the body behind.
'Leave the body' means freedom from rebirth through knowledge, not death. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
God is grasped by devotion and feeling, not argument alone. 'Leaving the body' here means being freed from identifying with it, the end of rebirth, not ending one's life.
The sage closes the chapter: those who know Shiva, grasped by inner feeling, bodiless, maker of being and non-being, leave the body behind (are freed from embodiment).
