He who is one and without colour, yet by the working of his power puts forth many colours for his own hidden purpose; into whom all this enters at the end and from whom it comes at the beginning: may that God join us to a good and clear understanding.
Meaning today and context
Before asking God for anything else, the sage asks for a good mind. Clear, kind understanding is the first thing worth praying for, because everything we choose flows from it.
The sage Shvetashvatara opens the fourth chapter with a prayer to the one God who, himself without colour or form, gives rise to the many forms of the world, and asks for a clear, good understanding.
That alone is fire, that is the sun, that is the wind, and that is the moon. That alone is the bright one, that is Brahman, that is the waters, that is Prajapati.

The many things we respect or fear in nature are not separate powers but faces of one reality. Seeing this can make the world feel less scattered and more whole.
The sage declares that all the great powers of nature and the gods are that one reality.
You are woman, you are man; you are the boy and the girl too. You are the old man tottering along with a staff. Being born, you become one whose faces are turned in every direction.
Meaning today and context
The same divine presence looks out through a child, a woman, a man and a frail old person. Treating each of them with respect, whatever their age or gender, is a way of honouring God.
Addressing the one God directly, the sage sees him in every human being, of every sex and age.
You are the dark-blue bird, the green one with red eyes; you are the cloud that holds lightning, the seasons and the oceans. Without beginning, you abide everywhere, all-pervading, and from you all the worlds are born.
Meaning today and context
Even small and passing things, a bird's colour, a storm, a change of season, can be seen as touched by the sacred. It is an invitation to look at the natural world with reverence.
Continuing the address to God, the sage sees him in birds, lightning, seasons and seas, as the beginningless source of all worlds.
There is one unborn female, red, white and black, who gives birth to many offspring like herself. One unborn male lies beside her, delighting in her; another unborn one leaves her, having enjoyed what she had to give.
This verse is about craving and detachment, not about women; the 'female' is primal nature (prakṛti). Detachment here is inner, not a reason to abandon family or responsibilities.

The world of nature and its pleasures is the same for everyone; the difference is whether we stay entangled in it or, having lived it, can let it go. Experience is meant to ripen us, not to hold us forever.
The sage uses the image of the 'unborn she-goat' (ajā, also 'unborn'), red, white and black, for primal nature with its three qualities; one unborn soul clings to her, another leaves her once he has had his fill.
Two birds, close companions, always together, cling to the same tree. One of them eats the sweet fig; the other, not eating, simply looks on.
Meaning today and context
Inside each of us there is the one who chases, tastes and suffers the results, and a quieter one who simply watches. Remembering that watcher, even for a moment, gives some distance from the swing of wanting and losing.
The famous image of the two birds (also in the Mundaka Upanishad and the Rig Veda): two companions on one tree, one eating its fruit, the other only watching.
On that same tree a person, sunk down and bewildered, grieves at his own helplessness. But when he sees the other, the Lord, whom the wise worship, and sees this greatness as His, he is freed from sorrow.
Grief is real and deserves to be felt; this verse is not a reason to dismiss mourning. If despair feels overwhelming, please reach out to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Much of our grief comes from feeling powerless and alone, sunk in our circumstances. Turning toward something larger than our small self, God or the deeper Self, does not erase pain but can lift us out of helplessness.
The second half of the two-birds image: the individual sunk in the tree grieves, until he sees the other, the Lord, and his greatness.

Rituals, texts and religious knowledge are means, not the goal. Reciting without understanding what they point to leaves us empty; knowing the reality behind them is what fulfils.
The sage asks what use the Vedic verses are to someone who does not know the imperishable reality in which they and all the gods rest.
The metres, the sacrifices, the rites, the vows, the past and the future, and all that the Vedas speak of: from this the wielder of māyā projects this whole world, and in it the other one (the individual soul) is held fast by māyā.

The same world that is God's creative play can feel like a trap to us when we take it as all there is. The bondage is in how we are caught, not in the world itself.
The sage says the one who wields māyā projects the whole world, including the Vedas and rites, and the individual is bound within it by that same māyā.
māyāṃ tu prakṛtiṃ vidyānmāyinaṃ tu maheśvaraṃ | tasyāvayavabhūtaistu vyāptaṃ sarvaṃ idaṃ jagat ||
Know nature (prakṛti) to be māyā, and the great Lord to be the wielder of māyā. This whole world is pervaded by beings that are parts of Him.
Calling the world māyā does not mean it does not matter. It is not a reason to neglect one's body, family, work or treatment.
Meaning today and context
The changing world is real enough to live in, but it is a display, not the final ground. Seeing every being as part of the one Lord gives a reason to treat the world with care rather than either grasping it or despising it.
One of the most quoted lines on māyā: nature is māyā and the great Lord is its wielder.

He who alone presides over every womb, every source; in whom all this comes together and dissolves: by discerning Him, the Lord, the giver of boons, the God worthy of praise, one comes to this peace that never ends.

Lasting peace does not come from controlling everything but from knowing what holds everything. When we see that we are held, our anxious grip can loosen.
The sage says that by discerning the one Lord who presides over every source of birth, one reaches lasting peace.

The prayer for a good mind returns again and again in this text. A clear, wholesome understanding is something to ask for every day, not once.
The sage repeats (from 3.4) the prayer to Rudra, the source of the gods, who saw the first-born Hiranyagarbha, asking again for good understanding.

Humans and animals alike live under the same Lord. Worship, at its heart, is recognising who sustains all life, including creatures we usually overlook.
The sage praises the Lord of the gods and of all creatures, echoing the Rig Vedic refrain 'to which god shall we offer?'.
Subtler than the subtle, in the midst of the chaos, the creator of everything, of many forms, the one who encircles the whole universe: knowing Him as Shiva, the auspicious, one attains peace without end.

The sage says that knowing Shiva, subtler than the subtle, who creates the world and embraces it, brings unending peace.

The fear of death loosens its grip when we know something in us that is not merely passing. The Lord hidden in every being is also a reason to see others as sacred.
The sage says the Lord is the guardian of the world at the right time, hidden in all beings; knowing Him cuts the snares of death.
Exceedingly subtle, like the fine film that rises above ghee, knowing Shiva hidden in all beings, the one who encircles the universe, knowing God, one is freed from all fetters.

The sage compares the Lord hidden in all beings to the fine cream above clarified butter; knowing Him frees one from all bonds.
