Adhyāya 6

6.1 Upanishadic seer

svabhāvameke kavayo vadanti kālaṃ tathānye parimuhyamānāḥ | devasyaiṣa mahimā tu loke yenedaṃ bhrāmyate brahmacakram ||

Some wise men say it is inherent nature; others, likewise deluded, say it is time. But it is the greatness of God in the world by which this wheel of Brahman is made to turn.

Meaning today and context

Explanations like 'it's just nature' or 'it's just time' describe how things happen but not why. The verse invites us to look past the machinery to the meaning behind it.

The last chapter returns to the question of chapter 1, what causes the world: the sage says some thinkers point to inherent nature, others to time, but they are confused; it is God's greatness that turns the wheel of Brahman.

6.2 Upanishadic seer

yenāvṛtaṃ nityamidaṃ hi sarvaṃ jñaḥ kālakālo guṇī sarvavidyaḥ | teneśitaṃ karma vivartate ha pṛthivyāptejo'nilakhāni cintyam ||

He by whom all this is always enveloped, the knower, the maker of time (time's own end), possessed of qualities, all-knowing: ruled by Him, the work of creation unfolds, which is to be thought of as earth, water, fire, air and space.

Meaning today and context

Even time, which seems to rule everything and wear everything away, is itself under a deeper order. Our fear of time running out can rest in that larger order.

The sage describes God as the knower who envelops all, the destroyer of time, under whose rule all action and the elements unfold.

6.3 Upanishadic seer

tatkarma kṛtvā vinivartya bhūyastattvasya tattvena sametya yogam | ekena dvābhyāṃ tribhiraṣṭabhirvā kālena caivātmaguṇaiśca sūkṣmaiḥ ||

Having done that work and withdrawn it again, having joined principle with principle, with one, with two, with three or with eight, and with time and the subtle qualities of the self...

Meaning today and context

The verse sketches creation as a careful assembling and disassembling of elements. For a reader today, it is a reminder that what is put together will also come apart, in the world and in our lives.

A compressed and obscure verse on how the Lord, having brought forth creation, withdraws and joins principle with principle; it continues into 6.4.

6.4 Upanishadic seer

ārabhya karmāṇi guṇānvitāni bhāvāṃśca sarvānviniyojayedyaḥ | teṣāmabhāve kṛtakarmanāśaḥ karmakṣaye yāti sa tattvato'nyaḥ ||

Whoever, having begun actions joined to the qualities, dedicates all states of being (to the Lord): when these are no more (as his own), the deeds he has done perish; and with his karma exhausted he goes on, in truth other than it.

Meaning today and context

We need not stop acting to be free; we can act and offer the work and the feelings around it to something higher. What we stop clinging to stops binding us.

The sage says that one who performs actions while offering all states and qualities to the Lord sees past deeds come to an end, and goes beyond them.

6.5 Upanishadic seer

ādiḥ sa saṃyoganimittahetuḥ parastrikālādakalo'pi dṛṣṭaḥ | taṃ viśvarūpaṃ bhavabhūtamīḍyaṃ devaṃ svacittasthamupāsya pūrvam ||

He is the beginning, the cause that brings about the union (of soul and body); He is beyond the three times and is seen as without parts. Having first worshipped Him, the all-formed, the source of all becoming, the adorable God dwelling in one's own mind...

Meaning today and context

Worship begins inside: the God to be adored is found first in one's own mind and heart. Outer forms of worship grow from that inner turning.

The sage describes the Lord as the first cause, beyond the three times and without parts, to be worshipped first as dwelling in one's own mind (the sentence continues into 6.6).

6.6 Upanishadic seer

sa vṛkṣakālākṛtibhiḥ paro'nyo yasmātprapañcaḥ parivartate'yaṃ | dharmāvahaṃ pāpanudaṃ bhageśaṃ jñātvātmasthamamṛtaṃ viśvadhāma ||

He is higher than and other than the tree (of the world), time and forms; from Him this expanse of the world revolves. Knowing Him, the bringer of righteousness, the remover of sin, the lord of good fortune, as dwelling in oneself, the immortal, the abode of all...

Meaning today and context

The God who removes wrong and brings goodness is found within, not only in distant heavens. Knowing this can give strength to move away from what we regret.

Continuing from 6.5: the Lord is beyond the tree of the world and beyond time, and is to be known as dwelling within oneself.

6.7 Upanishadic seer

tamīśvarāṇāṃ paramaṃ maheśvaraṃ taṃ devatānāṃ paramaṃ ca daivataṃ | patiṃ patīnāṃ paramaṃ parastādvidāma devaṃ bhuvaneśamīḍyam ||

Him, the supreme great Lord of lords, the supreme deity of deities, the supreme master of masters, beyond the highest: let us know Him, the God, the lord of the world, worthy of praise.

Meaning today and context

Every authority we know, bosses, rulers, even the gods, answers to something higher. That can humble the powerful and comfort those who feel powerless.

A hymn of praise: the sage calls the Lord the supreme ruler of rulers, god of gods, master of masters.

6.8 Upanishadic seer

na tasya kāryaṃ karaṇaṃ ca vidyate na tatsamaścābhyadhikaśca dṛśyate | parāsya śaktirvividhaiva śrūyate svābhāvikī jñānabalakriyā ca ||

He has nothing that he must do, and no organ to do it with; none is seen equal to Him, let alone greater. His supreme power is declared to be manifold, and his knowledge, strength and action are of his own nature.

Meaning today and context

God does not need anything from us; worship is not a deal. Knowing this frees devotion from fear of falling short and from bargaining.

The sage says God has no task to do and no instrument; nothing is equal to or greater than Him; His supreme power, knowledge, strength and action are natural to Him.

6.9 Upanishadic seer

He has no master in the world, no ruler, and no distinguishing mark. He is the cause, the lord of the lords of the organs; He has no begetter and no overlord.

Meaning today and context

God is not one more thing in the world to be pointed at or ranked. This keeps us from reducing the divine to a symbol we can own.

The sage says the Lord has no master or ruler, no mark, no parent; He is the cause and lord of all lords of the senses.

6.10 Upanishadic seer

yastantunābha iva tantubhiḥ pradhānajaiḥ svabhāvataḥ | deva ekaḥ svamāvṛṇoti sa no dadhādbrahmāpyayam ||

The one God who, like a spider with its threads, covers himself by his own nature with threads born of primal matter (pradhāna): may He grant us entry into Brahman.

Meaning today and context

The world is woven by God from within, like a spider's web from its own body. What seems to hide God is itself God's work, so the way out is through, not away.

The sage compares the one God to a spider covering itself with its own threads, here threads born of primal matter, and prays for merging in Brahman.

6.11 Upanishadic seer

eko devaḥ sarvabhūteṣu gūḍhaḥ sarvavyāpī sarvabhūtāntarātmā | karmādhyakṣaḥ sarvabhūtādhivāsaḥ sākṣī cetā kevalo nirguṇaśca ||

One God, hidden in all beings, pervading all, the inner Self of all beings; overseer of actions, dwelling in all beings; the witness, pure awareness, alone, and without qualities.

Meaning today and context

The same witness that is in you is in every other person. This is a reason to treat people with respect, and also a place of calm within you that your moods and mistakes do not touch.

One of the best-known verses: the one God hidden in all beings, their inner Self, the witness, pure consciousness, beyond qualities.

6.12 Upanishadic seer

eko vaśī niṣkriyāṇāṃ bahūṇāmekaṃ bījaṃ bahudhā yaḥ karoti | tamātmasthaṃ ye'nupaśyanti dhīrāsteṣāṃ sukhaṃ śāśvataṃ netareṣāṃ ||

The one controller of the many who are inactive, who makes the one seed into many: the steadfast who see Him dwelling in themselves, to them belongs eternal happiness, not to others.

Meaning today and context

Lasting happiness is not found by collecting more outside, but by seeing what is already within. Pleasures come and go; the joy of knowing the Self does not.

The sage says that eternal happiness belongs to the wise who see within themselves the one controller who makes the one seed many; not to others.

6.13 Upanishadic seer

nityo nityānāṃ cetanaścetanānāmeko bahūnāṃ yo vidadhāti kāmān | tatkāraṇaṃ sāṃkhyayogādhigamyaṃ jñātvā devaṃ mucyate sarvapāśaiḥ ||

The eternal among the eternal, the consciousness of the conscious, the one who grants the desires of the many: knowing that cause, which is reached through discernment and yoga (sāṃkhya and yoga), knowing God, one is freed from all fetters.

Meaning today and context

Understanding and practice go together: clear thinking about what we are, and disciplined inner practice, together lead to freedom. One without the other is incomplete.

The sage calls God the eternal among the eternal, the consciousness of the conscious, who fulfils the desires of many; known through Sāṃkhya and Yoga, He frees from all fetters.

6.14 Upanishadic seer

na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṃ nemā vidyuto bhānti kuto'yamagniḥ | tameva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṃ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṃ vibhāti ||

There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars; these lightnings do not shine, how then this fire? As He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light all this is lit.

Meaning today and context

Every light we know, every brilliance and success, borrows its shine from a deeper source. That is the light of awareness itself, by which we see anything at all.

A famous verse (also in Katha 5.15 and Mundaka): there the sun, moon and fire do not shine; everything shines by His light.

6.15 Upanishadic seer

eko haṃso bhuvanasyāsya madhye sa evāgniḥ salile saṃniviṣṭaḥ | tameva viditvāti mṛtyumeti nānyaḥ panthā vidyate'yanāya ||

The one swan in the midst of this world, He alone is the fire that has entered the waters. Only by knowing Him does one go beyond death; there is no other path for going there.

This verse is about the Self that does not die, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about death, please reach out or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Like fire hidden in water, the divine is present where it seems least likely. Facing death honestly means seeking what in us does not die.

The sage says the one swan (haṃsa) in the midst of this world is the fire within the waters; only by knowing Him does one pass beyond death; there is no other path.

6.16 Upanishadic seer

sa viśvakṛdviśvavidātmayonirjñaḥ kālakālo guṇī sarvavidyaḥ | pradhānakṣetrajñapatirguṇeśaḥ saṃsāramokṣasthitibandhahetuḥ ||

He is the maker of all, the knower of all, the self-sourced; the knower, the destroyer of time, possessed of qualities, all-knowing; lord of primal nature and of the soul, master of the qualities; the cause of worldly existence and of liberation, of continuance and of bondage.

Meaning today and context

Both our bondage and our freedom lie within God's order. Even the times we feel stuck are not outside the reach of grace.

The sage lists the Lord's titles: maker and knower of all, self-born, lord of nature and of the knower of the field, cause of bondage and release.

6.17 Upanishadic seer

sa tanmayo hyamṛta īśasaṃstho jñaḥ sarvago bhuvanasyāsya goptā | sa īśe asya jagato nityameva nānyo heturvidyata īśanāya ||

He is made of that, immortal, abiding as the Lord, the knower, all-pervading, the protector of this world. He rules this world forever; there is no other cause for its being ruled.

Meaning today and context

The world is not left to run on its own; it is held and protected. That trust can help when events feel out of control.

The sage says the Lord, immortal and all-pervading, is the guardian of this world and rules it forever; there is no other cause of its rule.

6.18 Upanishadic seer

yo brahmāṇaṃ vidadhāti pūrvaṃ yo vai vedāṃśca prahiṇoti tasmai | taṃ ha devamātmabuddhiprakāśaṃ mumukṣurvai śaraṇamahaṃ prapadye ||

He who in the beginning created Brahmā and who handed the Vedas to him: in that God, who is the light of one's own understanding, I, seeking liberation, take refuge.

Meaning today and context

After all the philosophy, the sage simply says: I take refuge. Surrender is not giving up thought but letting God light up one's own understanding.

The sage's own act of surrender: seeking freedom, he takes refuge in the God who first created Brahmā and gave him the Vedas, the light of one's own understanding.

6.19 Upanishadic seer

niṣkalaṃ niṣkriyaṃ śāntaṃ niravadyaṃ nirañjanam | amṛtasya paraṃ setuṃ dagdhendhanamivānalam ||

Without parts, without action, at peace, without fault, without stain: the supreme bridge to immortality, like a fire whose fuel has been burnt away.

Meaning today and context

A fire that has burnt all its fuel glows quietly without smoke. Peace is like that: not excitement, but the clear stillness left when restless desire has burnt down.

The sage describes the God to whom he takes refuge: partless, actionless, peaceful, flawless, stainless, the bridge to immortality, like a fire whose fuel has burnt out.

6.20 Upanishadic seer

yadā carmavadākāśaṃ veṣṭayiṣyanti mānavāḥ | tadā devamavijñāya duḥkhasyānto bhaviṣyati ||

When men can roll up the sky like a piece of leather, then there will be an end of sorrow without knowing God.

This verse is about lasting inner freedom; it does not replace help for depression or grief. Please seek support from people you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

We try to fix sorrow by rearranging the outside world, and it keeps returning. The verse says lasting relief needs an inner turning toward what is deepest, not only better circumstances.

The sage says that ending sorrow without knowing God is as impossible as rolling up the sky like a hide.

6.21 Narrator

tapaḥprabhāvāddevaprasādātbrahma ha śvetāśvataro'tha vidvān | atyāśramibhyaḥ paramaṃ pavitraṃ provāca samyagṛṣisaṅghajuṣṭam ||

By the power of his austerity and by the grace of God, the wise Shvetashvatara came to know Brahman, and then he properly taught this supreme purifier, cherished by the company of seers, to those who had gone beyond the stages of life.

Meaning today and context

Knowing comes from both effort and grace: discipline prepares us, but understanding is finally a gift.

A colophon in the third person: it tells how the sage Shvetashvatara, through austerity and God's grace, came to know Brahman and taught it to the most advanced renunciants.

6.22 Upanishadic seer

vedānte paramaṃ guhyaṃ purākalpe pracoditam | nāpraśāntāya dātavyaṃ nāputrāyāśiṣyāya vā punaḥ ||

This supreme secret of the Vedanta was proclaimed in an earlier age. It should not be given to one who is not at peace, nor to one who is not a son or a disciple.

This old rule of transmission is about readiness and a sincere teacher-student bond, not about excluding anyone by birth, gender or family.

Meaning today and context

Deep teaching needs a ready, settled mind and a relationship of trust. Before seeking or sharing profound ideas, it helps to cultivate calm and sincere interest.

The sage gives the traditional rule for passing on this teaching: it is not to be given to one who is not calm, nor to one who is not a son or a disciple.

6.23 Upanishadic seer

yasya deve parā bhaktiryathā deve tathā gurau | tasyaite kathitā hyarthāḥ prakāśante mahātmanaḥ prakāśante mahātmanaḥ ||

One who has supreme devotion to God, and as to God so to the guru: to that great-souled one these teachings, when spoken, shine forth; to that great-souled one they shine forth.

Devotion to a guru does not mean blind obedience. No genuine teacher demands money, unquestioning control, or anything that harms you; if that happens, step away and seek help.

Meaning today and context

Teachings do not open up through cleverness alone; they shine when we come with love and trust. The same text can stay dull to one reader and blaze for another who brings devotion.

The closing verse of the Upanishad: the teaching reveals itself to the great-souled one who has supreme devotion to God, and the same devotion to the guru as to God.
