Question 2

2.1 Bhargava Vaidarbhi to Pippalada

atha hainaṃ bhārgavo vaidarbhiḥ papraccha | bhagavankatyeva devāḥ prajāṃ vidhārayante | katara etatprakāśayante | kaḥ punareṣāṃ variṣṭha iti ||

Then Bhārgava Vaidarbhi asked him: "Sir, how many gods (powers) support a creature? Which of them make it manifest? And which among them is the greatest?"

Meaning today and context

We are a team of powers, senses, mind and speech, working together. The question asks what really keeps that team alive.

The second question. Bhārgava Vaidarbhi asks which powers hold up a living being, which make it shine, and which of them is the greatest.

2.2 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

tasmai sa hovāca | ākāśo ha vā eṣa devo vāyuragnirāpaḥ pṛthivī vāṅmanaścakṣuḥ śrotraṃ ca | te prakāśyābhivadanti | vayametadbāṇamavaṣṭabhya vidhārayāmaḥ ||

He said to him: "Space is that god, and wind, fire, water, earth, speech, mind, eye and ear. Having made it shine, they declared: 'We hold up and support this body.'"

Meaning today and context

Each part of us easily believes it is the one running the show: the clever mind, the persuasive tongue, the sharp eye. The story is about to show what that pride overlooks.

Pippalāda answers Bhārgava with a story: the elements and the senses each boast that they hold the body up.

2.3 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

tānvariṣṭaḥ prāṇa uvāca | mā mohamāpadyatha, ahamevaitatpañcadhātmānaṃ pravibhajyaitadbāṇamavaṣṭabhya vidhārayāmīti | te'śraddadhānā babhūvuḥ ||

Prāṇa, the greatest, said to them: "Do not fall into delusion. It is I who, dividing myself fivefold, hold up this body and support it." They did not believe him.

Meaning today and context

The quiet power that actually keeps things going is often the one nobody notices, and when it speaks up, people do not believe it. Things that work silently are easy to take for granted.

In Pippalāda's story, prāṇa, the greatest, speaks to the boasting senses; they do not believe it.

2.4 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

so'bhimānādūrdhvamutkramata iva | tasminnutkrāmatyathetare sarva evotkrāmante | tasmiṃśca pratiṣṭhamāne sarva eva prātiṣṭhante | tadyathā makṣikā madhukararājānamutkrāmantaṃ sarvā evotkrāmante | tasmiṃśca pratiṣṭhamāne sarvā eva prātiṣṭhante | evaṃ vāṅmanaścakṣuḥśrotraṃ ca | te prītāḥ prāṇaṃ stunvanti ||

Out of pride he rose up as if to leave. As he began to leave, all the others began to leave too; as he settled, they all settled. Just as all the bees rise when the king-bee rises and settle when it settles, so did speech, mind, eye and ear. Pleased, they praised prāṇa.

This describes prāṇa in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise, not anatomy, and not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Proof often works where argument fails. The senses learn humility only when they feel what happens without their real support. It is wiser to recognise what holds our life together before we are shown by losing it.

The story's turning point: prāṇa begins to leave, and all the senses are pulled out with it, like bees following their queen; humbled, they praise prāṇa.

2.5 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

eṣo'gnistapatyeṣa sūrya eṣa parjanyo maghavāneṣa vāyuḥ | eṣa pṛthivī rayirdevaḥ sadasaccāmṛtaṃ ca yat ||

"As fire he burns; he is the sun; he is the rain-cloud; he is Indra, the bountiful; he is the wind. He is the earth, matter, the god; he is being and non-being, and what is immortal."

Meaning today and context

Seen deeply, the life in us is the same life that burns in fire, shines in the sun and falls as rain. We are not separate from nature but one of its expressions.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Prāṇa is every power of nature.

2.6 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

arā iva rathanābhau prāṇe sarvaṃ pratiṣṭhitam | ṛco yajūṃṣi sāmāni yajñaḥ kṣatraṃ brahma ca ||

"Like spokes in the hub of a wheel, everything is set in prāṇa: the Ṛg verses, the Yajus formulas, the Sāman chants, sacrifice, the power of warriors and the power of priests."

Meaning today and context

All our learning, work and roles depend on simply being alive. Before any achievement, there is the gift of life that makes it possible.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Everything rests on prāṇa as spokes rest on the hub.

2.7 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

prajāpatiścarasi garbhe tvameva pratijāyase | tubhyaṃ prāṇa prajāstvimā baliṃ haranti yaḥ prāṇaiḥ pratiṣṭhasi ||

"As Prajāpati you move in the womb; it is you who are born again. To you, prāṇa, these creatures bring offerings, you who dwell with the senses."

Meaning today and context

Every birth is the same life appearing again in a new form. Eating, breathing and living are, in this view, offerings to the life within us.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Prāṇa is the creator moving in the womb and born again in every child.

2.8 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

devānāmasi vahnitamaḥ pitṝṇāṃ prathamā svadhā | ṛṣīṇāṃ caritaṃ satyamatharvāṅgirasāmasi ||

"You are the best carrier (of offerings) to the gods, the first offering to the ancestors. You are the true conduct of the seers, of the Atharvans and Aṅgirases."

Meaning today and context

Worship of the gods, remembrance of ancestors and the honest life of sages all run on the same life-force. Living truly is itself a form of worship.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Prāṇa carries offerings to the gods and ancestors and is the true conduct of the sages.

2.9 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

indrastvaṃ prāṇa tejasā rudro'si parirakṣitā | tvamantarikṣe carasi sūryastvaṃ jyotiṣāṃ patiḥ ||

"You, prāṇa, are Indra by your splendour; you are Rudra, the protector. You move through the mid-air; you are the sun, the lord of all lights."

Meaning today and context

The fierce power (Rudra) and the protecting power are named as one, and the same life shines as the sun. What can feel frightening in life is also what guards and lights it.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Prāṇa is Indra, Rudra the protector, and the sun.

2.10 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

yadā tvamabhivarṣasyathemāḥ prāṇa te prajāḥ | ānandarūpāstiṣṭhanti kāmāyānnaṃ bhaviṣyatīti ||

"When you pour down as rain, prāṇa, these creatures of yours stand full of joy, thinking: 'There will be food, as much as we want.'"

Meaning today and context

The joy people feel at the first rain is a joy in life itself, which feeds us. It is a reminder to be grateful for the basic things we depend on.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. When prāṇa rains as the cloud, all creatures rejoice at the promise of food.

2.11 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

vrātyastvaṃ prāṇaikaṛṣirattā viśvasya satpatiḥ | vayamādyasya dātāraḥ pitā tvaṃ mātariśva naḥ ||

"You are pure by nature (needing no rite), prāṇa, the one seer (the sacred fire), eater of all, the true lord of all that is. We are the givers of what you eat; you, Mātariśvan (wind), are our father."

Meaning today and context

We feed our life, but our life is not ours to command; it is closer to a parent who sustains us. That shift, from owner to child, can make us gentler with ourselves.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Prāṇa is pure in itself, the eater of all and our father; we only offer it what it eats.

2.12 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

yā te tanūrvāci pratiṣṭhitā yā śrotraṃ yā ca cakṣuṣi | yā ca manasi saṃtatā śivāṃ tāṃ kuru motkramīḥ ||

"That form of yours which dwells in speech, in hearing and in the eye, and which is spread through the mind: make it gracious; do not go away."

Meaning today and context

Speech, hearing, sight and thought are all lit by the same life. The prayer is simple: may that life stay with us and make all these gentle and good.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. The senses pray to prāṇa to stay kind in them and not depart.

2.13 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

prāṇasyedaṃ vaśe sarvaṃ tridive yatpratiṣṭhitam | māteva putrānrakṣasva śrīśca prajñāṃ ca vidhehi na iti ||

"All this is under the power of prāṇa, even what is set in the third heaven. Protect us as a mother protects her sons; grant us prosperity and wisdom."

Meaning today and context

The prayer asks for two things together: enough to live well, and the wisdom to live rightly. It pictures the power behind life as caring like a mother.

Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. The hymn ends with a prayer: protect us as a mother protects her children, and give us prosperity and wisdom.
