Sukeśā Bhāradvāja, Śaibya Satyakāma, Sauryāyaṇī Gārgya, Kausalya Āśvalāyana, Bhārgava Vaidarbhi and Kabandhī Kātyāyana: these, devoted to Brahman, grounded in Brahman, searching for the highest Brahman, thought, "He will tell us all of it," and with fuel in their hands they approached the revered Pippalāda.

These students were already serious and learned, yet they still went to a teacher with humility. Real learning often starts when we admit there is more to know and go to someone who knows it.
The opening frame: six seekers, already devoted to Brahman, come together to the sage Pippalāda with fuel in their hands, the traditional sign of a student asking to be taught.
tānha sa ṛṣiruvāca | bhūya eva tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śraddhayā saṃvatsaraṃ saṃvatsyatha | yathākāmaṃ praśnānpṛcchata | yadi vijñāsyāmaḥ sarvaṃ ha vo vakṣyāma iti ||
The sage said to them: "Live here one more year with austerity, chastity and faith. Then ask whatever questions you wish. If we know, we will tell you all of it."
Brahmacarya here is the discipline of a student living with a teacher. It is not a demand that householders give up married life, and not a call to punish the body.

Deep questions need a prepared mind: patience, steady discipline and trust come before answers. The teacher's "if we know" is a model of honesty: even a great sage does not pretend to know everything.
Pippalāda does not answer at once. He asks the six to live with him for another year in discipline, chastity and faith; only then may they ask, and he will answer if he knows.

He said to him: "Prajāpati, the lord of creatures, desired offspring. He performed austerity (tapas). Having done so, he produced a pair, matter (rayi) and life (prāṇa), thinking: 'These two will make creatures for me in many ways.'"

In this picture, everything living is made of two things working together: substance and the life that moves it. Even the creator begins with focused effort, tapas, before anything comes into being.
Pippalāda answers Kabandhī: creation begins with the creator's tapas, which produces a pair, rayi (matter, nourishment) and prāṇa (life, energy).
ādityo ha vai prāṇo rayireva candramāḥ | rayirvā etatsarvaṃ yanmūrtaṃ cāmūrtaṃ ca | tasmānmūrtireva rayiḥ ||
"The sun is life (prāṇa); the moon is matter (rayi). Matter is all this, whatever has form and whatever is formless. Therefore form itself is matter."

The Upanishad reads the world as a meeting of energy and form, like sun and moon. It invites us to see the living force and the material body as two sides of one creation.
Pippalāda identifies the pair: the sun is prāṇa, the moon is rayi; and rayi is everything that has shape, gross or subtle.
"When the sun rises and enters the eastern quarter, it gathers the living beings of the east into its rays. When it lights up the south, the west, the north, below, above, the in-between quarters, everything, it gathers all living beings into its rays."

Sunlight reaching every direction is a picture of one life holding all lives together. Every living thing, everywhere, is touched and sustained by the same source.
Pippalāda continues the image of the sun as prāṇa: as it rises and lights every direction, it gathers the life of all beings into its rays.
"(The wise know him as) taking all forms, golden, knower of all that is born, the final refuge, the one light, giving heat. With a thousand rays, existing in a hundred ways, the life of all creatures: this sun rises."

A sunrise can be more than weather: the Upanishad sees in it the one light that gives life to everything. Pausing at sunrise with that thought can be a small daily practice of gratitude.
The verse quoted by Pippalāda praises the sun as the one light and the life of all creatures.

"The year is Prajāpati. It has two courses, the southern and the northern. Those who worship thinking that sacrifices and pious works are all that need be done win only the world of the moon, and they return again. Therefore the sages who desire offspring take the southern course. This is matter (rayi), the path of the ancestors."

Good deeds and rituals bring good results, but the Upanishad says results run out, and one comes back to where one started. Doing good is worthwhile; it is not the same as knowing oneself.
Pippalāda applies rayi and prāṇa to time: the year has a southern and a northern course. Those who rely only on rituals and good works go the southern way, the path of the ancestors, to the moon's world, and return to birth.
"But by the northern course, seeking the Self through austerity, chastity, faith and knowledge, they win the sun. This is the home of all life; this is immortal; this is the final refuge. From here they do not return. This is the end (of the round). On this there is a verse:"

What the Upanishad values most is not more results but the search for the Self, carried out with discipline, trust and understanding. That search is described as the way out of endless repetition.
The contrast: those who seek the Self through discipline, chastity, faith and knowledge take the northern course to the sun, from which there is no return.

The same pattern of life and substance runs through every scale of time: year, month and day. Even the waxing and waning of the moon can be read as part of one living order.
Pippalāda applies the pair to the month: the dark fortnight is rayi, the bright fortnight prāṇa.
"Day-and-night is Prajāpati. Its day is life (prāṇa), its night matter (rayi). Those who join in love by day spill away their life. That they join in love by night is (counted as) chastity."
This is an ancient rule of restraint, reflecting its time. It is not medical or sexual-health advice and should never be used to shame anyone about their body or their relationship.

Applied to the day: day is prāṇa, night is rayi. Pippalāda gives a traditional rule of restraint: intimacy by day wastes one's vitality, while intimacy at night (in due measure) counts as brahmacarya.

Pippalāda ends his answer to Kabandhī: householders who raise a family keep the creator's vow, and the world of Brahmā belongs to those who live with discipline and in whom truth is established.
