Chapter 9

9.1 Chanakya

muktimicchasi cettāta viṣayānviṣavattyaja | kṣamā''rjavaṃ dayā śaucaṃ satyaṃ pīyūṣavatpiba ||

If you desire liberation, dear one, give up the objects of the senses as if they were poison, and drink forgiveness, uprightness, compassion, purity and truth as if they were nectar.

Giving up sense-objects means loosening craving, not abandoning family or responsibilities, or depriving the body of food and care.

Meaning today and context

Freedom comes less from what you add than from what you stop feeding. Loosen the grip of cravings, and fill that space with forgiveness, honesty and kindness.

Chanakya, addressing the listener as 'dear one', names what to drop and what to drink for freedom.

9.2 Chanakya

parasparasya marmāṇi ye bhāṣante narādhamāḥ | ta eva vilayaṃ yānti valmīkodarasarpavat ||

Those vile people who speak of each other's secret weak points perish, like a snake trapped inside an anthill.

Meaning today and context

Exposing someone's private wounds in a fight may feel like winning, but it traps you too. Some things should never be used as weapons.

A warning about those who expose one another's weak spots.

9.3 Chanakya

gandhaḥ suvarṇe phalamikṣudaṃḍe | nā'kāri puṣpaṃ khalu candanasya | vidvāndhanī bhūpatidīrghajīvī | dhātuḥ purā ko'pi na buddhido'bhūt ||

No fragrance in gold, no fruit on sugarcane, no flower made for the sandal tree; the learned not rich, the king not long-lived: in the past no one at all gave the Creator good counsel.

Meaning today and context

No one has every gift; even the best things come with something missing. Accept that about yourself and others, and value what is there.

An upajāti verse, half in jest: the Creator left some gifts unpaired, for no one advised him.

9.4 Chanakya

sarvauṣadhīnāmamṛtaṃ pradhānam | sarveṣu saukhyeṣvaśanaṃ pradhānam | sarvendriyāṇāṃ nayanaṃ pradhānaṃ | sarveṣu gātreṣu śiraḥ pradhānam ||

Of all medicines, amṛta (nectar) is chief; of all pleasures, eating is chief; of all senses, the eye is chief; of all limbs, the head is chief.

Meaning today and context

Every group has its centre. Know what is most vital in your health, work and life, and protect that first.

An upajāti list of what is chief in each class.

9.5 Chanakya

No messenger travels through the sky, no news comes from there, no one spoke of it beforehand, and there is no meeting with it; yet the excellent twice-born who knows the eclipse of sun and moon placed in the sky, how is he not learned?

Meaning today and context

Knowledge can reach where no one can travel. Careful study and calculation let us know things no messenger could ever bring, and that deserves respect.

A vasantatilakā verse in praise of the astronomer who can predict eclipses.

9.6 Chanakya

vidyārthī sevakaḥ pānthaḥ kṣudhārto bhayakātaraḥ | bhāṇḍārī pratihārī ca sapta suptānprabodhayet ||

A student, a servant, a traveller, one tormented by hunger, one terrified by fear, a storekeeper and a doorkeeper: these seven, if asleep, should be woken.

Meaning today and context

Some people cannot afford to sleep through their duty or their need: someone with an exam, a shift or a journey, or someone hungry or frightened. Help them, even if it means disturbing them.

A list of seven sleepers who should be woken.

9.7 Chanakya

ahiṃ nṛpaṃ ca śārdūlaṃ varaṭīṃ bālakaṃ tathā | paraśvānaṃ ca mūrkhaṃ ca sapta suptānna bodhayet ||

A snake, a king, a tiger, a wasp, a small child, someone else's dog and a fool: these seven, if asleep, should not be woken.

Meaning today and context

Don't stir up trouble that is resting. A powerful person, a dangerous situation or a quarrelsome person is often best left undisturbed.

The counterpart of 9.6: seven sleepers who should be left alone.

9.8 Chanakya

arthādhītāśca yairvedāstathā śūdrānnabhojinaḥ | te dvijāḥ kiṃ kariṣyanti nirviṣā iva pannagāḥ ||

Those by whom the Vedas are studied for money, and who eat the food of śūdras: what can such twice-born do? They are like snakes without poison.

Worth comes from conduct, never from birth. This verse reflects the caste and purity ideas of its time and must never be used to rank, shun or exclude anyone. Sharing food with anyone is never polluting.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is that learning pursued only for money loses its power. The idea that eating someone's food pollutes reflects caste rules that are rejected today.

A verse condemning brahmins who study the Vedas for money, framed in the caste rules of its time.

9.9 Chanakya

yasminruṣṭe bhayaṃ nāsti tuṣṭe naiva dhanāgamaḥ | nigrahā'nugraho nāsti sa ruṣṭaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ||

One whose anger brings no fear and whose favour brings no wealth, who can neither punish nor reward: what can his anger do?

Meaning today and context

Anger without the power or standing to back it is just noise. Don't be shaken by empty threats; and if you lead, make sure your words carry weight through fairness and consistency.

On the powerless anger of one who can neither help nor harm.

9.10 Chanakya

nirviṣeṇāpi sarpeṇa kartavyā mahatī phaṇā | viṣamastu na cāpyastu ghaṭāṭopa bhayaṃkaraḥ ||

Even a snake without poison should spread a great hood; whether there is poison or not, the display of a hood is frightening.

Standing your ground is not a licence to intimidate or threaten anyone. If you are being bullied or are in danger, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Looking weak invites people to push you around. Even if you feel unsure, stand tall and show you can defend yourself.

A snake simile about keeping up an appearance of strength.

9.11 Chanakya

prātardyūtaprasaṃgena madhyāhne strīprasaṃgataḥ | rātrau cauraprasaṃgena kālo gacchati dhīmatām ||

In the morning with talk of gambling, at midday with talk of a woman, and at night with talk of a thief: so the time of the wise passes.

The traditional reading is allegorical. Taken literally, this is not an endorsement of gambling or of objectifying women.

Meaning today and context

Read as intended, it says the wise fill their day with good stories and reflection rather than idle gossip. How you spend your free hours shapes your mind.

A riddle-like verse on how the wise pass their day; traditionally read as listening to the Mahabharata (the dice game) in the morning, the Ramayana (Sita) at midday and the Bhagavata (Krishna, the butter-thief) at night.

9.12 Chanakya

svahastagrathitā mālā svahastādghṛṣṭacandanam | svahastalikhitaṃ stotraṃ śakrasyāpi śriyaṃ haret ||

A garland strung with one's own hand, sandal paste ground with one's own hand, a hymn written with one's own hand: these would take away the fortune even of Indra.

Meaning today and context

This reflects a ritual belief of its time, perhaps about humility: not adorning or praising oneself. There is no harm in making things with your own hands.

A traditional belief about things one should not do for oneself in worship.

9.13 Chanakya

ikṣudaṃḍāstilāḥ kṣudrāḥ kāntā kāṃcanamedinī | candanaṃ dadhi tāmbūlaṃ mardanaṃ guṇavarddhanam ||

Sugarcane, sesame, petty people, a wife, gold, land, sandalwood, curd and betel: being pressed or crushed increases their worth.

This verse must never be used to justify pressuring, beating or controlling a wife, a worker or anyone else. Domestic violence is a crime. If you are being harmed, call women's helpline 181 or police 112. Many editions read śūdrāḥ here, a caste name; worth comes from conduct, never from birth, and the verse must never be used to rank or demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Sugarcane gives juice when pressed and sandalwood fragrance when ground. But people are not sugarcane: no one, whether a wife, a worker or someone you think petty, becomes better by being pressured or beaten.

A list of things said to improve by being pressed or crushed, including people, in the harsh idiom of its time. This edition reads kṣudrāḥ, 'petty or mean people'; many popular editions read śūdrāḥ.

9.14 Chanakya

daridratā dhīratayā virājate | kuvastratā śubhratayā virājate | kadannatā coṣṇatayā virājate | kurūpatā śīlatayā virājate ||

Poverty shines through fortitude; poor clothes shine through cleanliness; plain food shines when served warm; plainness of looks shines through good character.

Meaning today and context

You don't need riches to live with dignity. Steadiness, cleanliness, care in small things and good character make even little go a long way.

Four lines, each showing how a lack is redeemed by a quality.
