Chapter 10

10.1 Chanakya

One who lacks money is not truly poor; such a person is surely rich. But one who lacks the jewel of learning is poor in every respect.

Meaning today and context

Money can be lost and earned again, but what you know and understand goes with you everywhere. If you must choose where to invest, invest in learning.

Chanakya opens the chapter by contrasting two kinds of poverty: lack of money and lack of learning.

10.2 Chanakya

dṛṣṭipūtaṃ nyasetpādaṃ vastrapūtaṃ pibejjalam | śāstrapūtaṃ vadedvākyaṃ manaḥpūtaṃ samācaret ||

Place your foot where the eye has made it safe; drink water strained through cloth; speak words checked against sound teaching; and do what the mind has judged pure.

Meaning today and context

Care in small things protects you: watch your step, take care with what you consume, check your facts before you speak, and act only on what your conscience approves.

Four rules of care for daily life: look before stepping, filter water, speak with sound knowledge, act on a clear conscience.

10.3 Chanakya

sukhārthī cettyajedvidyāṃ vidyārthī cettyajetsukham | sukhārthinaḥ kuto vidyā sukhaṃ vidyārthinaḥ kutaḥ ||

If you seek comfort, give up learning; if you seek learning, give up comfort. Where is learning for the comfort-seeker, and where is comfort for the seeker of learning?

Meaning today and context

Real learning asks you to give up some ease: less scrolling, less lounging, more effort. This is about choosing effort over idle comfort, not about punishing yourself or skipping sleep and food.

A well-known maxim for students: comfort and serious learning pull in opposite directions.

10.4 Chanakya

kavayaḥ kiṃ na paśyanti kiṃ na kurvanti yoṣitaḥ | madyapāḥ kiṃ na jalpanti kiṃna khādanti vāyasāḥ ||

What do poets not see? What do women not do? What do drunkards not babble? What do crows not eat?

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time about women. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. If you face abuse or danger at home, call 112 or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

The verse is a sweeping generalisation. The part about poets' imagination and drunkards' loose talk can be appreciated, but the line about women is a prejudice and should not be repeated.

A set of four rhetorical questions about poets, women, drunkards and crows, meaning that each knows no limit in its own sphere.

10.5 Chanakya

raṃkaṃ karoti rājānaṃ rājānaṃ raṃkamevaca | dhaninaṃ nirdhanaṃ caiva nirdhanaṃ dhaninaṃ vidhiḥ ||

Fate makes a pauper a king and a king a pauper; it makes the rich poor and the poor rich.

Meaning today and context

Circumstances can change for anyone, up or down. Don't be arrogant in good times or lose hope in bad ones.

Chanakya reflects on how fortune turns: fate can reverse anyone's position.

10.6 Chanakya

lubdhānāṃ yācakaḥ śatrurmūrkhāṇāṃ bodhako ripuḥ | jārastrīṇāṃ patiḥ śatruścaurāṇāṃ candramā ripuḥ ||

To the greedy, a beggar is an enemy; to fools, one who instructs them is a foe; to unfaithful wives, the husband is an enemy; to thieves, the moon is a foe.

The clause about unfaithful wives is a one-sided generalisation of its time; it must not be used to suspect, shame or control women.

Meaning today and context

People often resent whoever exposes or blocks their weakness: the miser resents the one who asks, the stubborn resent the one who corrects. If someone resents good advice, the problem may not be the advice.

A list of four natural enemies: each person resents whoever stands in the way of their weakness.

10.7 Chanakya

Those who have neither learning nor austerity nor generosity, neither good conduct nor virtue nor dharma, are a burden on the earth in this mortal world; they roam about as beasts in human form.

This is a call to cultivate good qualities, not a judgment to pass on anyone. No one is 'a burden on the earth'. If you feel worthless or hopeless, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416 is free and available round the clock.

Meaning today and context

What makes a life human is what we cultivate: knowledge, discipline, giving, character and goodness. It is an invitation to grow, not a label to put on anyone.

A famous upajāti verse describing a life lived without any of the human qualities.

10.8 Chanakya

antaḥ sāravihīnānāmupadeśo na jāyate | malayācalasaṃsargānna veṇuścandanāyate ||

Instruction does not take root in those who lack inner substance. Bamboo does not become sandalwood even by growing beside the Malaya mountain.

Meaning today and context

Good surroundings help only when there is willingness inside. Teachers and mentors can offer, but the learner must bring openness.

A simile on teachability: instruction cannot grow where there is no inner substance.

10.9 Chanakya

yasya nāsti svayaṃ prajñā śāstraṃ tasya karoti kim | locanābhyāṃ vihīnasya darpaṇaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ||

What can scripture do for one who has no understanding of his own? What will a mirror do for one who has no eyes?

Meaning today and context

Books, courses and advice are mirrors; they help only if you look and think for yourself. Reading without reflecting changes nothing.

Chanakya stresses that one's own understanding is what makes learning useful.

10.10 Chanakya

durjanaṃ sajjanaṃ kartumupāyo na hi bhūtale | apānaṃ śatadhā dhautaṃ na śreṣṭhamindriyaṃ bhavet ||

There is no means on earth to make a wicked person good. The anus, though washed a hundred times, does not become the noblest of organs.

People can and do change, and no one should be written off as beyond hope. Read this as permission to protect yourself, not to condemn anyone. If you are being harmed, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

You cannot force change on someone who does not want it. Protect yourself from repeated harm instead of making it your job to fix them.

A blunt simile on how hard it is to reform someone set in wickedness.

10.11 Chanakya

āptadveṣādbhavenmṛtyuḥ paradveṣāddhanakṣayaḥ | rājadveṣādbhavennāśo brahmadveṣātkulakṣayaḥ ||

Hostility toward those one should trust brings death; toward others, loss of wealth; toward the king, ruin; toward brahmins, the destruction of one's family.

The mention of brahmins reflects the social order of its time; respect is due to good and learned people by conduct, never by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Enmity costs more than we think, and enmity with those closest to us and those who guide us costs the most. Quarrels with trusted people and with authority can wreck a life.

A list of four kinds of hostility and their results, in traditional nīti terms.

10.12 Chanakya

varaṃ vanaṃ vyāghragajendrasevitaṃ | drumālayaṃ pakvaphalāmbusevanam | tṛṇeṣu śayyā śatajīrṇabalkalaṃ | na bandhumadhye dhanahīnajīvanam ||

Better a forest haunted by tigers and great elephants, a tree for a home, ripe fruit and water for food, a bed of grass and bark garments worn a hundred times, than a life without money among one's relatives.

This expresses the pain of poverty; it is not advice to leave your family or withdraw from people. If shame about money is weighing heavily on you, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse voices how painful it can feel to be poor and dependent among family. The feeling is real, but it is not advice to cut yourself off; families can be places of support.

A vaṃśastha verse on the humiliation of being poor among one's relatives.

10.13 Chanakya

vipro vṛkṣastasya mūlaṃ ca sandhyā | vedāḥ śākhā dharmakarmāṇi patram | tasmātmūlaṃ yatnato rakṣaṇīyam | chinne mūle naiva śākhā na patram ||

The vipra is a tree: its root is the sandhyā prayer, the Vedas are its branches, and the acts of dharma its leaves. So guard the root with effort; when the root is cut there is neither branch nor leaf.

The verse speaks of the brahmin of its day; read it as about any person's root discipline. It must never be used to rank people by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Whatever your path, there is a root practice that keeps everything else alive: daily reflection, prayer, study or discipline. Neglect the root and the visible branches wither.

A śālinī verse comparing a brahmin's life of learning to a tree whose root is daily prayer.

10.14 Chanakya

mātā ca kamalā devī pitā devo janārdanaḥ | bāndhavā viṣṇubhaktāśca svadeśe bhuvanatrayam ||

My mother is the goddess Lakshmi, my father the god Janardana (Vishnu), my kin are the devotees of Vishnu, and my homeland is the three worlds.

Meaning today and context

Faith can widen the sense of belonging: those who share your values become family, and nowhere is wholly foreign. It speaks to anyone who feels rootless or far from home.

A devotional verse: for a devotee of Vishnu, the whole universe is home and family.

10.15 Chanakya

ekavṛkṣe samārūḍhā nānāvarṇā bihaṃgamāḥ | prabhāte dikṣu daśasu kā tatra parivedanā ? ||

Birds of many colours settle on a single tree; at dawn they fly off in the ten directions. Why grieve over that?

Grief after a loss is natural and needs its time; this verse does not dismiss mourning. If grief feels unbearable, please reach out; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Families, classmates and colleagues gather for a time and then move on. Knowing this can soften the ache of partings, though it does not make missing someone wrong.

An image of birds gathered on one tree for the night that scatter at dawn, on the passing nature of every gathering.

10.16 Chanakya

buddhiryasya balaṃ tasya nirbuddheśca kuto balam | vane hastī madonmattaḥ śaśakena nipātitaḥ ||

One who has intelligence has strength; where is strength for one without it? In the forest an elephant mad with rut was brought down by a hare.

Meaning today and context

Size and power are not everything; clear thinking can overcome far bigger obstacles. When you feel small against a big problem, think before you despair.

Chanakya praises intelligence over brute force, recalling the fable of the hare who outwitted a mighty elephant.

10.17 Chanakya

kā cintā mama jīvane yadi harirviśvaṃbharo gīyate | no cedarbhakajīvanāya jananīstanyaṃ kathaṃ niḥsaret | ityālocya muhurmuhuryadupate lakṣmīpate kevalam | tvatpadāmbujasevanena satataṃ kālo mayā nīyate ||

What worry need I have about my livelihood, if Hari is praised as the sustainer of the universe? Otherwise, how would milk flow from the mother's breast for the infant's life? Reflecting on this again and again, O Lord of the Yadus, Lord of Lakshmi, I spend my time only in serving your lotus feet.

Meaning today and context

Life has its own provisions, like a mother's milk for a newborn. Trust can ease the anxious grip of worry, while you still do your part.

A devotional śārdūlavikrīḍita verse: trust in Hari as the sustainer of all, shown by a mother's milk flowing for her newborn.

10.18 Chanakya

gīrvāṇavāṇīṣu viśiṣṭabuddhi- | stathāpi bhāṣāntaralolupo'ham | yathā sudhāyāmamareṣu satyāṃ | svargāṅganānāmadharāsave ruciḥ ||

Though my mind excels in the language of the gods, I still hanker after other tongues, just as, though there is nectar among the immortals, they relish the wine of heavenly maidens' lips.

Meaning today and context

A light-hearted admission that even an expert enjoys variety. Love of one language need not close the door to others.

A playful upajāti verse in which the poet confesses that, though learned in Sanskrit, he enjoys other languages too.

10.19 Chanakya

Meaning today and context

A traditional claim ranking foods by their nourishing power.

10.20 Chanakya

śākena rogā vardhante payaso vardhate tanuḥ | ghṛtena vardhate vīryaṃ māṃsānmāṃsaṃ pravardhate ||

Leafy vegetables increase diseases; milk makes the body grow; ghee increases vigour; and meat increases flesh.

Not dietary or medical advice; vegetables are part of a healthy diet. For any health or diet question, consult a doctor or qualified dietitian.

Meaning today and context

These are old beliefs about food. The claim that vegetables cause disease is contrary to present medical knowledge.

A traditional claim on the effects of different foods on the body.
