Chapter 11

11.1 Chanakya

dātṛtvaṃ priyavaktṛtvaṃ dhīratvamucitajñatā | abhyāsena na labhyante catvāraḥ sahajā guṇāḥ ||

Generosity, pleasant speech, courage, and a sense of what is fitting: these four qualities are inborn; they are not gained by practice.

Meaning today and context

Some people seem naturally generous, kind-spoken, brave and tactful. The verse honours these gifts; even if they come easier to some, everyone can still lean toward them.

Chanakya names four qualities he regards as inborn rather than acquired by practice.

11.2 Chanakya

ātmavargaṃ parityajya paravargaṃ samāśrayet | svayameva layaṃ yāti yathā rājyamadharmataḥ ||

One who abandons his own circle and takes refuge with another's perishes of himself, as a kingdom perishes through adharma.

Meaning today and context

Chasing the approval of outsiders while turning your back on those who stood by you usually ends badly. Loyalty to your own people is a source of strength.

A warning against abandoning one's own people to seek shelter with outsiders.

11.3 Chanakya

hastī sthūlatanuḥ sa cāṃkuśavaśaḥ kiṃ hastimātro'ṅkuśaḥ | dīpe prajvalite praṇaśyati tamaḥ kiṃ dīpamātraṃ tamaḥ | vajreṇāpi hatāḥ patanti girayaḥ kiṃ vajramātrannagāḥ | tejo yasya virājate sa balavānsthūleṣu kaḥ pratyayaḥ ||

The elephant is huge in body, yet it is ruled by the goad: is the goad as big as the elephant? When a lamp is lit, darkness is destroyed: is darkness only as big as the lamp? Mountains struck by the thunderbolt fall: are mountains only as big as the thunderbolt? He in whom inner power shines is the strong one; what trust can be placed in bulk?

Meaning today and context

A small, focused effort can move something huge: one lamp lights a room, one good idea can turn a situation. Don't measure your strength by size or numbers.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse with three images showing that strength lies in inner power, not in size.

11.4 Chanakya

kalau daśasahasrāṇi haristyajati medinīm | tadardhaṃ jāhnavītoyaṃ tadardhaṃ grāmadevatāḥ ||

In the Kali age, after ten thousand years, Hari leaves the earth; after half that time, the waters of the Ganga; after half that again, the village deities.

Meaning today and context

A traditional belief about the declining age; it is part of the text's worldview rather than practical counsel.

A traditional prophecy about the Kali age.

11.5 Chanakya

gṛhāsaktasya no vidyā na dayā māṃsabhojinaḥ | dravyalubdhasya no satyaṃ straiṇasya na pavitratā ||

One attached to home has no learning; a meat-eater has no compassion; one greedy for money has no truthfulness; and one obsessed with women has no purity.

The claim about meat-eaters is the text's own view; it is not a reason to judge anyone's compassion by their diet.

Meaning today and context

Each strong attachment crowds out a virtue: comfort crowds out learning, greed crowds out honesty, obsession crowds out integrity. Notice which attachment is crowding out what you value.

A list of four things that cannot coexist with four kinds of attachment.

11.6 Chanakya

na durjanaḥ sādhudaśāmupaiti | bahuprakārairapi śikṣyamāṇaḥ | āmūlasiktaḥ payasā ghṛtena | na nimbavṛkṣo madhuratvameti ||

A wicked person does not attain the state of the good even when taught in many ways. A neem tree, though watered from the root with milk and ghee, does not become sweet.

No one should be written off as beyond change. This is not a reason to label people, only a reminder that you are not responsible for others' choices. If someone is harming you, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Lavish care does not change someone who is set on their ways. Spend your effort where it is welcomed, and don't blame yourself for failing to change someone else.

An upajāti simile on the stubbornness of a wicked nature.

11.7 Chanakya

antargatamalo duṣṭaḥ tīrthasnānaśatairapi | na śudhyati yathā bhāṇḍaṃ surayā dāhitaṃ ca yat ||

A wicked person, whose impurity is within, is not made pure even by a hundred baths at holy places, just as a pot steeped in liquor is not made clean (by washing).

Meaning today and context

Rituals, donations or a good public image do not wash away what is wrong inside. Real change happens in intention and conduct.

Chanakya says outward ritual cannot cleanse inner wickedness.

11.8 Chanakya

na vetti yo yasya guṇaprakarṣaṃ | sa taṃ sadā nindati nā'tra citram | yathā kirātī karikumbhalabdhāṃ | muktāṃ parityajya bibharti guñjām ||

One who does not know the excellence of another's qualities always disparages him; there is nothing strange in this. So a forest woman throws away a pearl found in an elephant's temple and wears a string of guñjā berries instead.

The image of a forest-dwelling (tribal) woman as ignorant is a stereotype of its time; it must not be used to belittle any community.

Meaning today and context

Criticism from people who cannot judge your work says more about them than about you. Seek appraisal from those who understand.

An upajāti simile on why those who cannot recognise worth disparage it.

11.9 Chanakya

ye tu saṃvatsaraṃ pūrṇaṃ nityaṃ maunena bhuṃjate | yugakoṭi sahasrantu svargaloke mahīyate ||

Those who eat in silence every day for a full year are honoured in heaven for thousands of crores of yugas.

Meaning today and context

A traditional promise of merit for a discipline of silence at meals; the practice of eating mindfully can be valued without taking the promise literally.

A traditional claim about the merit of eating in silence.

11.10 Chanakya

kāmaṃ krodhaṃ tathā lobhaṃ svāduśṛṃgārakautukam | atinidrā'tisevā ca vidyārthī hyaṣṭa varjayet ||

Desire, anger, greed, love of tasty food, adornment, idle amusements, excessive sleep and excessive service (to others): these eight a student should give up.

Meaning today and context

A student's attention is precious. Infatuation, temper, greed, junk pleasures, vanity, endless entertainment and oversleeping all drain it; trim them to make room for study.

Chanakya lists eight things a student should avoid.

11.11 Chanakya

akṛṣṭaphalamūlāni vanavāsarataḥ sadā | kurute'harahaḥ śrāddhamṛṣirvipraḥ sa ucyate ||

One who lives on fruits and roots from untilled land, always devoted to life in the forest, and performs the śrāddha every day: such a vipra is called a ṛṣi (sage).

Meaning today and context

The title is earned by how one lives. Simplicity, closeness to nature and daily remembrance are marks of a sage, whatever one's birth.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, the forest-dwelling sage.

11.12 Chanakya

ekāhāreṇa santuṣṭaḥ ṣaṭkarmanirataḥ sadā | ṛtukāle'bhigāmī ca sa vipro dvija ucyate ||

Content with one meal a day, always engaged in the six duties (study, teaching, sacrifice, officiating, giving and receiving), and approaching his wife only in her season: such a vipra is called a dvija (twice-born).

Meaning today and context

Contentment, steady duty and self-restraint are what make someone truly 'born again' into a disciplined life.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, the true 'twice-born'.

11.13 Chanakya

laukike karmaṇi rataḥ paśūnāṃ paripālakaḥ | vāṇijyakṛṣikartā yaḥ sa vipro vaiśya ucyate ||

One devoted to worldly work, a keeper of cattle, who carries on trade and farming: such a vipra is called a vaiśya.

Varṇa here is assigned by conduct, not birth, but the verse still belongs to a caste hierarchy; it must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

The verse defines a person by what they actually do. Trade and farming are honest work; the point is that titles should match how one lives.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, one who has taken up worldly business.

11.14 Chanakya

lākṣāditailanīlānāṃ kausumbhamadhusarpiṣām | vikretā madyamāṃsānāṃ sa vipraḥ śūdra ucyate ||

A seller of lac and the like, oil, indigo, safflower, honey, ghee, liquor and meat: such a vipra is called a śūdra.

This verse uses caste and outcaste names as labels of disgrace. Read it only as a judgment on conduct; it must never be used to rank, insult or exclude anyone by birth, caste or community.

Meaning today and context

The verse uses a caste name as a mark of disgrace, which reflects the hierarchy of its time. Its only usable point is that status is lost by conduct, not that any work or community is lower.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, one who trades in goods the text considers improper for him.

11.15 Chanakya

parakāryavihantā ca dāmbhikaḥ svārthasādhakaḥ | chalī dveṣī mṛdukrūro vipro mārjāra ucyate ||

One who spoils others' work, a hypocrite, intent only on his own ends, deceitful, hateful, soft outside and cruel within: such a vipra is called a cat.

Meaning today and context

Beware the person who is sweet on the surface but undermines others quietly, and check that you are not becoming one. Outward piety means nothing without honest conduct.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, the hypocrite likened to a cat.

11.16 Chanakya

vāpīkūpataḍāgānāmārāmasuraveśmanām | ucchedane nirāśaṃkaḥ sa vipro mleccha ucyate ||

One who has no qualms about destroying step-wells, wells, ponds, gardens and temples: such a vipra is called a mleccha (barbarian).

'Mleccha' was a term for outsiders and foreigners used as an insult. Read the verse only as condemning harm to public goods; never use it to insult any community.

Meaning today and context

Destroying water sources, green spaces and places of worship that serve everyone is a grave wrong. The point holds without the label.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, one who destroys public goods.

11.17 Chanakya

devadravyaṃ gurudravyaṃ paradārābhimarṣaṇam | nirvāhaḥ sarvabhūteṣu vipraścāṇḍāla ucyate ||

One who takes the property of the gods and of the teacher, who violates others' wives, and who lives off all creatures: such a vipra is called a cāṇḍāla.

This verse uses caste and outcaste names as labels of disgrace. Read it only as a judgment on conduct; it must never be used to rank, insult or exclude anyone by birth, caste or community. For abuse or violence, contact police 112 or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Stealing what is held in trust, sexual violation and exploiting others are among the worst wrongs. The verse expresses this through an outcaste name, which is the prejudice of its time.

One of a series (11.11–11.17) that classifies a brahmin (vipra) by how he actually lives, not by birth: here, the worst conduct, labelled with the name of an outcaste group.

11.18 Chanakya

deyaṃ bhojyadhanaṃ dhanaṃ sukṛtibhirno saṃcayastasya vai | śrīkarṇasya baleśca vikramapateradyāpi kīrtiḥ sthitā | asmākaṃ madhudānabhogarahitaṃ naṣṭaṃ cirātsaṃcitaṃ | nirvāṇāditi naṣṭapādayugalaṃ gharṣantyaho makṣikāḥ ||

The virtuous should give away wealth and food; they should never hoard it. The fame of Karṇa, of Bali and of King Vikrama stands even today. 'Our honey, gathered so long, never given and never enjoyed, is lost': thinking this, seeing it gone, the bees, alas, rub their feet together.

Not financial advice; generosity does not mean giving away what you and your family need. Plan savings sensibly.

Meaning today and context

Wealth that is only hoarded is often lost without anyone being helped. Giving and sharing leave a lasting good name; balance saving with generosity.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse contrasting the lasting fame of generous kings with the bees who lose their hoarded honey.
