Chapter 12

12.1 Chanakya

sānandaṃ sadanaṃ sutāstu sadhiyaḥ kāṃtā priyālāpinī | icchāpūrtidhanaṃ svayoṣitiratiḥ svājñāparāḥ sevakāḥ | ātithyaṃ śivapūjanaṃ pratidinaṃ miṣṭānnapānaṃ gṛhe | sādhoḥ saṅgamupāsate ca satataṃ dhanyo gṛhasthāśramaḥ ||

A joyful home, intelligent children, a sweet-spoken wife, wealth enough to meet one's wishes, love for one's own spouse, obedient servants, hospitality, daily worship of Shiva, good food and drink in the house, and constant company of the good: blessed is such a householder's life.

Meaning today and context

A good family life is made of ordinary things: warmth, kind words, faithfulness, enough income, welcoming guests, some daily worship or reflection, and good friends. Most of these are in our hands.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse describing the blessings of a happy household, in traditional terms addressed to a householder.

12.2 Chanakya

ārteṣu vipreṣu dayānvitaśce- | cchraddhena yā svalpamupaiti dānam | anantapāraṃ samupaiti dānam | yaddīyate tanna labheddvijebhyaḥ ||

If, moved by compassion for brahmins in distress, one gives even a little with faith, that gift returns without end. What is given to the twice-born is not received back in the same measure (but far beyond it).

The verse names brahmins, as was usual in its time; read it as giving to anyone in need. It must never be used to rank people by caste.

Meaning today and context

A small gift given with real care to someone in need does more good than its size suggests. Compassion, not the amount, gives giving its worth.

An upajāti verse praising compassionate giving to brahmins in distress, as traditional nīti for a householder or king.

12.3 Chanakya

dākṣiṇyaṃ svajane dayā parajane śāṭhyaṃ sadā durjane | prītiḥ sādhujane smayaḥ khalajane vidvajjane cārjavam | śauryaṃ śatrujane kṣamā gurujane nārījane dhūrtatā | itthaṃ ye puruṣāḥ kalāsu kuśalāsteṣveva lokasthitiḥ ||

Courtesy toward one's own people, kindness toward strangers, cunning always toward the wicked, affection toward the good, haughtiness toward the vile, straightforwardness toward the learned, valour toward enemies, forbearance toward elders, and craftiness toward women: the world rests on men who are skilled in these arts.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time about women. It is not the view of this app, and it must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. If you face abuse or danger at home, call 112 or the women's helpline 181. Cunning toward the 'wicked' is also not a licence for manipulation or revenge.

Meaning today and context

Much of this is sound: courtesy to family, kindness to strangers, openness with the learned, patience with elders. But the line about women endorses deceit and should be rejected outright, and cunning toward anyone is risky.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse listing how a worldly-wise man should behave toward different kinds of people.

12.4 Chanakya

hastau dānavivarjitau śrutipuṭau sārasvatadrohiṇau | netre sādhuvilokanena rahite pādau na tīrthaṃ gatau | anyāyārjitavittapūrṇamudaraṃ garveṇa tuṅgaṃ śiro | re re jaṃbuka muñcamuñca sahasā nīcaṃ sunindyaṃ vapuḥ ||

Hands that never gave, ears that were hostile to learning, eyes that never looked upon the good, feet that never went to a holy place, a belly filled with wealth gained unjustly, a head held high in pride: O jackal, jackal, drop it at once, this low and most contemptible body!

Meaning today and context

The body's worth is in how it is used: hands that give, ears that learn, eyes that seek the good, feet that go where they should. Ask what your own hands, ears and eyes are doing.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse: a jackal about to eat a corpse is told to drop it, because the dead man wasted every limb of his body.

12.5 Chanakya

yeṣāṃ śrīmadyaśodāsutapadakamale nāsti bhaktirnarāṇāṃ | yeṣāmābhīrakanyāpriyaguṇakathane nānuraktā rasajñā | yeṣāṃ śrīkṛṣṇalīlālalitarasakathā sādarau naiva karṇau | dhiktāṃdhiktāṃdhigetānkathayati satataṃ kīrtanastho mṛdaṃgaḥ ||

Those men who have no devotion to the lotus feet of glorious Yaśodā's son, whose tongue takes no delight in telling the dear virtues of the cowherd maiden, whose ears do not listen with reverence to the charming tales of Śrī Krishna's play: 'Shame on them, shame on them, shame on these!' says the mṛdaṅga at the kīrtan, again and again.

Meaning today and context

A playful devotional image: the beat of the drum, 'dhik-tām', is heard as a reproach. It expresses the poet's love for Krishna rather than a judgment to pass on others.

A devotional sragdharā verse in which the drum at a kīrtan seems to sound out a reproach to those without love for Krishna.

12.6 Chanakya

patraṃ naiva yadā karīraviṭape doṣo vasantasya kiṃ | nolūko'pyavalokate yadi divā sūryasya kiṃ dūṣaṇaṃ | varṣā naiva patanti cātakamukhe meghasya kiṃ dūṣaṇaṃ | yatpūrvaṃ vidhinā lalāṭalikhitaṃ tanmārjituṃ kaḥ kṣamaḥ ||

If the karīra bush has no leaves, is that the fault of spring? If the owl cannot see by day, is that the sun's fault? If rain does not fall into the cātaka bird's mouth, is that the cloud's fault? What fate wrote long ago on the forehead, who is able to wipe it away?

This is not a reason to give up, to accept mistreatment, or to stop seeking help. If you feel trapped by fate or hopeless, please talk to someone; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Some limits are not anyone's fault, and blaming others for them only adds bitterness. Accept what truly cannot change, while still working on what can.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse on fate: when something lacks a gift, it is not the giver's fault.

12.7 Chanakya

satsaṅgādbhavati hi sādhutā khalānāṃ | sādhūnāṃ na hi khalasaṃgateḥ khalatvam | āmodaṃ kusumabhavaṃ mṛdeva dhatte | mṛdgandhaṃ nahi kusumāni dhārayanti ||

Through the company of the good, even the wicked become good; but the good do not become wicked through the company of the wicked. The earth takes on the fragrance born of flowers, but flowers do not take on the smell of earth.

Meaning today and context

Spending time with good people rubs off on us. Choose your company with care, and if you are on a good path, be a fragrance for those around you.

A praharṣiṇī verse on the power of good company, illustrated by flowers and earth.

12.8 Chanakya

sādhūnāṃ darśanaṃ puṇyaṃ tīrthībhūtā hi sādhavaḥ | kālena phalate tīrthaṃ sadyaḥ sādhusamāgamaḥ ||

Seeing the good is itself merit; the good are living places of pilgrimage. A holy place bears fruit in time; the company of the good bears fruit at once.

Meaning today and context

Time with a wise, kind person can change your outlook the same day. Seek out such people; they are worth more than any journey.

Chanakya compares meeting good people to visiting a pilgrimage place.

12.9 Chanakya

'Everyone is clever at stealing others' wealth and wives.' 'Then how do you live, friend?' 'I live like a worm in poison.'

Meaning today and context

A sharp satire on a place where only the tall are 'great' and everyone is clever at cheating. It describes how a good person survives in a bad environment rather than giving advice.

A satirical śārdūlavikrīḍita dialogue between a traveller and a brahmin about a corrupt city.

12.10 Chanakya

na viprapādodakapaṃkajāni | na vedaśāstradhvanigarjitāni | svāhāsvadhākāravivarjitāni | śmaśānatulyāni gṛhāṇi tāni ||

Homes not sanctified by water from washing a brahmin's feet, not resounding with the sound of the Vedas and scriptures, and without the cries of svāhā and svadhā (offerings to gods and ancestors): those homes are like cremation grounds.

Not a judgment on any household, faith or caste. Homes differ in their practices, and no home should be shamed for them.

Meaning today and context

The verse values hospitality to the learned, study and remembrance of gods and ancestors in the home. Its harsh comparison reflects ritual expectations of its time.

An upajāti verse on homes without ritual observance, in the terms of its time.

12.12 Chanakya

anityāni śarīrāṇi vibhavo naiva śāśvataḥ | nityaṃ sannihito mṛtyuḥ kartavyo dharmasaṃgrahaḥ ||

Bodies are impermanent; wealth is not lasting; death is always near. Therefore one should gather dharma.

Meaning today and context

Since nothing is permanent, spend your days on what matters: kindness, honesty, doing right. Don't postpone goodness to later.

Chanakya reminds that body, wealth and life are passing, so one should gather dharma.

Not a glorification of fighting or violence, and not a description of any caste's or wife's 'nature'. It must never be used to stereotype anyone.

Meaning today and context

Each finds joy in what suits their nature. It is a description, not a model; delight in fighting is not to be imitated.

I cannot compare you with these, O Lord of the Raghus; to what then can you be likened?

The idea that we can learn something from everyone is useful, and the first two lines are fair. Learning lies and deceit is not advice to follow, and the line about women is a prejudice.

A verse on what one can learn from different kinds of people; its last line is a prejudiced generalisation about women.

One who spends without looking (at his means), one who has no protector, one who loves quarrels, and one who lusts after women everywhere: such a man is quickly ruined.

Having no protector (anātha) is a misfortune, not a fault; this must never be used to blame orphans or people without support. Not financial advice.

The wise should not brood over food; let them think of dharma alone. For people's food is born together with their birth.

Big results come from small, steady steps: a page a day, a small saving every month, one kind act at a time. Consistency beats bursts.

Chanakya uses the image of a pot filled drop by drop to describe how all real gains accumulate.

Age alone does not bring wisdom or kindness. Judge people by their conduct, not their years, and don't wait for time to change someone who harms you.
