Chapter 13

13.1 Chanakya

मुहूर्त्तमपि जीवेच्च नरः शुक्लेन कर्मणा । न कल्पमपि कष्टेन लोकद्वयविरोधिना ॥

muhūrttamapi jīvecca naraḥ śuklena karmaṇā | na kalpamapi kaṣṭena lokadvayavirodhinā ||

A person should live even a moment by pure deeds, rather than an age by evil deeds that ruin both this world and the next.

मनुष्य को शुद्ध कर्मों के साथ एक मुहूर्त भर भी जीना चाहिए, पर ऐसे बुरे कर्मों के साथ एक कल्प तक भी नहीं, जो इस लोक और परलोक दोनों को बिगाड़ते हैं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

What matters is not how long you last but what you do with your time. A short stretch of honest work is worth more than years of gain built on harm.

मायने यह नहीं रखता कि आप कितने समय टिके, बल्कि यह कि उस समय में क्या किया। ईमानदार काम का थोड़ा-सा समय भी नुकसान पहुँचाकर कमाए गए बरसों से बेहतर है।

Chanakya opens the chapter by weighing the quality of a life against its length: a short life of clean deeds against a long one spent in harm.

13.2 Chanakya

गते शोको न कर्तव्यो भविष्यं नैव चिन्तयेत् । वर्तमानेन कालेन प्रवर्त्तन्ते विचक्षणाः ॥

gate śoko na kartavyo bhaviṣyaṃ naiva cintayet | vartamānena kālena pravarttante vicakṣaṇāḥ ||

One should not grieve over what is past, nor brood over the future. The discerning act in the present moment.

जो बीत गया उसका शोक नहीं करना चाहिए और भविष्य की चिंता में नहीं डूबना चाहिए। विवेकी लोग वर्तमान समय के अनुसार ही काम करते हैं।

This verse is about not being paralysed by regret or worry; it does not mean that grief after a loss is wrong. Mourning takes time and should be allowed. If grief or worry feels unbearable, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

यह श्लोक पछतावे या चिंता में जकड़ न जाने के बारे में है; इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि किसी को खोने के बाद शोक करना गलत है। शोक में समय लगता है और उसे होने देना चाहिए। यदि दुख या चिंता असहनीय लगे, तो किसी भरोसेमंद व्यक्ति से बात करें या टेली-मानस 14416 पर कॉल करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Regret and worry both pull you away from the only time you can act in. Learn from the past, plan for the future, but put your effort into today.

पछतावा और चिंता दोनों हमें उस समय से दूर ले जाते हैं जिसमें ही हम कुछ कर सकते हैं। अतीत से सीखिए, भविष्य की योजना बनाइए, पर मेहनत आज में लगाइए।

A well-known maxim on time: the wise neither brood over the past nor worry about the future, but act in the present.

13.3 Chanakya

स्वभावेन हि तुष्यन्ति देवाः सत्पुरुषाः पिता । ज्ञातयः स्नान-पानाभ्यां वाक्यदानेन पंडिताः ॥

svabhāvena hi tuṣyanti devāḥ satpuruṣāḥ pitā | jñātayaḥ snāna-pānābhyāṃ vākyadānena paṃḍitāḥ ||

Gods, good people and a father are pleased by one's true nature; relatives by bathing and drink (hospitality); and the learned by a well-spoken word.

देवता, सज्जन और पिता स्वभाव से ही प्रसन्न होते हैं; संबंधी स्नान-पान (आतिथ्य) से, और विद्वान अच्छे वचन से।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Different people value different things. Those closest to us want our genuine character, relatives value being looked after, and thoughtful people value a good conversation.

अलग-अलग लोग अलग चीज़ों को महत्व देते हैं। सबसे अपने लोग हमारा सच्चा स्वभाव चाहते हैं, रिश्तेदार आवभगत को सराहते हैं, और समझदार लोग अच्छी बातचीत को।

Chanakya lists what pleases different people: some are won by one's true nature, some by hospitality, the learned by good words.

13.4 Chanakya

आयुः कर्म च वित्तञ्च विद्या निधनमेव च । पञ्चैतानि च सृज्यन्ते गर्भस्थस्यैव देहिनः ॥

āyuḥ karma ca vittañca vidyā nidhanameva ca | pañcaitāni ca sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ ||

Lifespan, action, wealth, learning and death: these five are fashioned for an embodied being while it is still in the womb.

आयु, कर्म, धन, विद्या और मृत्यु: ये पाँच बातें देहधारी के लिए गर्भ में रहते हुए ही रच दी जाती हैं।

This is a traditional belief, not a fact about health, education or money. Illness should be treated, children's learning supported, and effort made; do not use this verse to give up on care or on anyone's future.

यह एक पारंपरिक मान्यता है, स्वास्थ्य, शिक्षा या धन के बारे में कोई तथ्य नहीं। बीमारी का इलाज होना चाहिए, बच्चों की पढ़ाई में साथ देना चाहिए और प्रयास करना चाहिए; इस श्लोक के आधार पर देखभाल छोड़ने या किसी के भविष्य से उम्मीद छोड़ने का काम न करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Some of what shapes our lives is outside our control, and accepting that brings some peace. But Chanakya's own advice elsewhere is to plan, study and work hard; this verse is no excuse to stop trying.

जीवन की कुछ बातें हमारे वश में नहीं होतीं, और यह स्वीकार करने से कुछ शांति मिलती है। पर चाणक्य स्वयं दूसरी जगह योजना, पढ़ाई और परिश्रम की सीख देते हैं; यह श्लोक प्रयास छोड़ने का बहाना नहीं है।

A fatalistic verse: five things are said to be set for a being while still in the womb.

13.5 Chanakya

अहो वत ! विचित्राणि चरितानि महात्मनाम् । लक्ष्मीं तृणाय मन्यन्ते तद्भारेण नमन्ति च ॥

aho vata ! vicitrāṇi caritāni mahātmanām | lakṣmīṃ tṛṇāya manyante tadbhāreṇa namanti ca ||

Ah, how wonderful are the ways of the great-souled! They regard wealth as a blade of grass, and yet they bow down under its weight.

अहो, महात्माओं के चरित्र कितने विचित्र हैं! वे लक्ष्मी को तिनके के समान मानते हैं, और फिर भी उसके भार से झुक जाते हैं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Truly great people hold money lightly and become more humble, not more proud, as it grows, like a branch that bends when it is full of fruit.

सच्चे बड़े लोग धन को हल्के में लेते हैं और धन बढ़ने पर अधिक विनम्र होते हैं, घमंडी नहीं, जैसे फलों से लदी डाल झुक जाती है।

Chanakya marvels at the conduct of great souls, who think little of wealth yet grow humbler the more of it they hold.

13.6 Chanakya

यस्य स्नेहो भयं तस्य स्नेहो दुःखस्य भाजनम् । स्नेहमूलानि दुःखानि तानि त्यक्त्वा वसेत्सुखम् ॥

yasya sneho bhayaṃ tasya sneho duḥkhasya bhājanam | snehamūlāni duḥkhāni tāni tyaktvā vasetsukham ||

Whoever has attachment has fear; attachment is the vessel of sorrow. Sorrows have attachment as their root; giving these up, one should live happily.

जिसे मोह (स्नेह) है, उसे भय है; स्नेह ही दुःख का पात्र है। दुःखों की जड़ स्नेह है; उन्हें छोड़कर सुख से रहना चाहिए।

This is not advice to abandon family, partners or friends, or to stop caring for anyone. It is about loosening clinging, not cutting off love. If you feel alone or overwhelmed, reach out to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

यह परिवार, जीवनसाथी या मित्रों को छोड़ देने, या किसी की परवाह करना बंद करने की सलाह नहीं है। यह आसक्ति को ढीला करने के बारे में है, प्रेम को काट देने के बारे में नहीं। यदि आप अकेलापन या बोझ महसूस करते हैं, तो किसी से संपर्क करें या टेली-मानस 14416 पर कॉल करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Much of our anxiety comes from clinging: to people, outcomes or possessions. Loving without clinging, without needing to control, lightens both fear and sorrow.

हमारी बहुत-सी चिंता चिपकाव से आती है: लोगों से, नतीजों से या चीज़ों से। बिना जकड़े, बिना नियंत्रण किए प्रेम करना भय और दुःख दोनों को हल्का करता है।

A verse in the renunciant mood: attachment brings fear and sorrow, so give up clinging and live in ease.

13.7 Chanakya

अनागतविधाता च प्रत्युत्पन्नमतिस्तथा । द्वावेतौ सुखमेधेते यद्भविष्यो विनश्यति ॥

anāgatavidhātā ca pratyutpannamatistathā | dvāvetau sukhamedhete yadbhaviṣyo vinaśyati ||

The one who provides for what has not yet come, and the one whose wit is ready when things happen: these two prosper in happiness. The one who says 'what will be, will be' perishes.

जो आने वाली बात का पहले से प्रबंध कर लेता है, और जो समय आने पर तुरंत सूझबूझ दिखाता है: ये दोनों सुख से बढ़ते हैं। जो 'जो होगा देखा जाएगा' सोचता है, वह नष्ट होता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Plan ahead where you can, and think quickly when something unexpected comes. Leaving everything to chance is the one approach that reliably fails.

जहाँ हो सके पहले से योजना बनाइए, और जब कुछ अचानक आ पड़े तो तुरंत सोचिए। सब कुछ भाग्य पर छोड़ देना ही वह रास्ता है जो निश्चित रूप से विफल होता है।

Chanakya names two kinds of people who prosper and one who perishes, an idea known from the fable of the three fish.

13.8 Chanakya

राज्ञि धर्मिणि धर्मिष्ठाः पापे पापाः समे समाः । राजानमनुवर्तन्ते यथा राजा तथा प्रजाः ॥

rājñi dharmiṇi dharmiṣṭhāḥ pāpe pāpāḥ same samāḥ | rājānamanuvartante yathā rājā tathā prajāḥ ||

When the king is righteous, the people are righteous; when he is sinful, they are sinful; when he is middling, they are middling. The people follow the king: as the king, so the people.

राजा धर्मात्मा हो तो प्रजा भी धर्मिष्ठ होती है, पापी हो तो पापी, और सामान्य हो तो सामान्य। प्रजा राजा का अनुसरण करती है: जैसा राजा, वैसी प्रजा।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

People take their cue from those who lead them. A manager, a teacher or a parent sets the tone; if you want honesty around you, show it first.

लोग अपने अगुवा से ही सीखते हैं। मैनेजर, शिक्षक या माता-पिता माहौल तय करते हैं; अगर आप अपने आसपास ईमानदारी चाहते हैं, तो पहले खुद दिखाइए।

Traditional nīti on kingship: the people follow the example of their king. Famous for its last phrase, yathā rājā tathā prajāḥ.

13.9 Chanakya

जीवन्तं मृतवन्मन्ये देहिनं धर्मवर्जितम् । मृतो धर्मेण संयुक्तो दीर्घजीवी न संशयः ॥

jīvantaṃ mṛtavanmanye dehinaṃ dharmavarjitam | mṛto dharmeṇa saṃyukto dīrghajīvī na saṃśayaḥ ||

I regard a living person who is without dharma as one who is dead. One who dies joined with dharma lives long; there is no doubt of it.

जो देहधारी धर्म से रहित होकर जीता है, उसे मैं मरे हुए के समान मानता हूँ। जो धर्म से युक्त होकर मरता है, वह निःसंदेह दीर्घजीवी है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

A life is measured by what it stands for. People who lived rightly are remembered and continue to shape others long after they are gone.

जीवन का माप इससे है कि वह किस बात के लिए खड़ा रहा। जो सही ढंग से जिए, वे याद रखे जाते हैं और जाने के बाद भी दूसरों को राह दिखाते हैं।

Chanakya contrasts living without dharma with dying in it: the first is a kind of death, the second a long life in memory.

13.10 Chanakya

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां यस्यैकोऽपि न विद्यते । अजागलस्तनस्येव तस्य जन्म निरर्थकम् ॥

dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāṃ yasyaiko'pi na vidyate | ajāgalastanasyeva tasya janma nirarthakam ||

One who has not even one of dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation: his birth is as useless as the teat on a goat's neck.

जिसके पास धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष में से एक भी नहीं है, उसका जन्म बकरी के गले के थन की तरह व्यर्थ है।

The verse is a rhetorical spur, not a judgement on anyone's worth. No one's life is useless. If you feel your life has no point, please talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

यह श्लोक प्रेरित करने के लिए कही गई बात है, किसी के मूल्य पर निर्णय नहीं। किसी का भी जीवन व्यर्थ नहीं है। यदि आपको लगता है कि आपके जीवन का कोई अर्थ नहीं, तो कृपया किसी भरोसेमंद व्यक्ति से बात करें या टेली-मानस 14416 पर कॉल करें।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

A good life aims at something: doing right, earning honestly, enjoying rightly, seeking deeper freedom. If you feel adrift, start with any one of these.

अच्छा जीवन किसी लक्ष्य की ओर बढ़ता है: सही करना, ईमानदारी से कमाना, उचित आनंद लेना, गहरी मुक्ति खोजना। अगर आप भटके हुए हैं, तो इनमें से किसी एक से शुरुआत कीजिए।

Chanakya uses a blunt rural image to say that a life without any of the four aims of life (dharma, artha, kāma, moksha) is wasted.

13.11 Chanakya

दह्यमानाः सुतीव्रेण नीचाः परयशोऽग्निना । अशक्तास्तत्पदं गन्तुं ततो निन्दां प्रकुर्वते ॥

dahyamānāḥ sutīvreṇa nīcāḥ parayaśo'gninā | aśaktāstatpadaṃ gantuṃ tato nindāṃ prakurvate ||

Burned by the fierce fire of another's fame, mean-minded people, unable to reach that position, then take to slander.

दूसरे के यश की तीव्र आग में जलते हुए नीच प्रवृत्ति के लोग, उस स्थान तक पहुँचने में असमर्थ होकर, फिर निंदा करने लगते हैं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Much criticism comes from envy, not from fault in you. And if you catch yourself running someone down, ask whether it is jealousy speaking.

बहुत-सी आलोचना ईर्ष्या से आती है, आपकी किसी कमी से नहीं। और अगर आप खुद किसी की बुराई करने लगें, तो पूछिए कि कहीं यह जलन तो नहीं बोल रही।

Chanakya explains why small-minded people slander others: they are burned by envy of a fame they cannot reach.

13.12 Chanakya

बन्धाय विषयासङ्गं मुक्त्यै निर्विषयं मनः । मन एव मनुष्याणां कारणं बन्धमोक्षयोः ॥

bandhāya viṣayāsaṅgaṃ muktyai nirviṣayaṃ manaḥ | mana eva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandhamokṣayoḥ ||

Attachment to sense objects leads to bondage; a mind free of sense objects leads to liberation. The mind alone is the cause of people's bondage and liberation.

विषयों में आसक्ति बंधन का कारण है और विषयों से मुक्त मन मुक्ति का। मनुष्यों के बंधन और मोक्ष का कारण मन ही है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

What traps us is less the world than the mind that clings to it. Working on your own mind, its cravings and habits, is where freedom begins.

हमें दुनिया उतना नहीं बाँधती जितना उससे चिपका हुआ मन। अपने मन पर, उसकी लालसाओं और आदतों पर काम करना ही स्वतंत्रता की शुरुआत है।

A verse found in the Upanishadic tradition: the mind alone binds or frees a person.

13.13 Chanakya

देहाभिमानगलिते ज्ञानेन परमात्मनः । यत्र यत्र मनो याति तत्र तत्र समाधयः ॥

dehābhimānagalite jñānena paramātmanaḥ | yatra yatra mano yāti tatra tatra samādhayaḥ ||

When pride in the body has melted away through knowledge of the Supreme Self, then wherever the mind goes, there is samādhi.

जब परमात्मा के ज्ञान से देह का अभिमान गल जाता है, तब मन जहाँ-जहाँ जाता है, वहाँ-वहाँ समाधि है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Peace is not only found sitting still. When the sense of 'me and mine' loosens, ordinary moments too can feel whole and calm.

शांति केवल ध्यान में बैठकर ही नहीं मिलती। जब 'मैं और मेरा' का भाव ढीला होता है, तो साधारण क्षण भी पूर्ण और शांत लगने लगते हैं।

A verse of spiritual teaching: when identification with the body falls away through knowledge of the Supreme Self, every state of mind becomes absorption.

13.14 Chanakya

ईप्सितं मनसः सर्वं कस्य सम्पद्यते सुखम् । दैवायत्तं यतः सर्वं तस्मात्संतोषमाश्रयेत् ॥

īpsitaṃ manasaḥ sarvaṃ kasya sampadyate sukham | daivāyattaṃ yataḥ sarvaṃ tasmātsaṃtoṣamāśrayet ||

Who ever gets all the happiness the mind desires? Since everything depends on fate, one should take refuge in contentment.

मन की चाही हुई सारी खुशी किसे मिलती है? क्योंकि सब कुछ दैव के अधीन है, इसलिए संतोष का सहारा लेना चाहिए।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

No one gets everything they want. Doing your best and then making peace with the result protects you from endless dissatisfaction.

किसी को भी सब कुछ नहीं मिलता। अपना पूरा प्रयास करके फिर परिणाम से संतोष कर लेना, अंतहीन असंतोष से बचाता है।

Chanakya counsels contentment, since no one gets everything the mind wants.

13.15 Chanakya

यथा धेनुसहस्रेषु वत्सो गच्छति मातरम् । तथा यच्च कृतं कर्म कर्तारमनुगच्छति ॥

yathā dhenusahasreṣu vatso gacchati mātaram | tathā yacca kṛtaṃ karma kartāramanugacchati ||

As among a thousand cows the calf goes to its own mother, so the deed that has been done follows its doer.

जैसे हज़ारों गायों के बीच बछड़ा अपनी माँ के पास ही जाता है, वैसे ही किया हुआ कर्म अपने कर्ता के पीछे-पीछे जाता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Our actions come back to us, sooner or later, without getting lost in the crowd. That is a reason to act with care, and also a comfort when your good work seems unnoticed.

हमारे कर्म देर-सबेर हमारे पास लौटकर आते हैं, भीड़ में खोते नहीं। यह सोच-समझकर काम करने का कारण है, और तब सांत्वना भी जब आपका अच्छा काम अनदेखा लगे।

A famous simile for karma: as a calf finds its own mother among a thousand cows, so a deed finds the one who did it.

13.16 Chanakya

अनवस्थितकार्यस्य न जने न वने सुखम् । जनो दहति संसर्गाद्वनं संगविवर्जनात् ॥

anavasthitakāryasya na jane na vane sukham | jano dahati saṃsargādvanaṃ saṃgavivarjanāt ||

For one whose affairs are unsettled there is no happiness among people or in the forest: people burn him through contact, and the forest through lack of company.

जिसका कार्य (मन) स्थिर नहीं है, उसे न लोगों के बीच सुख है न वन में: लोग संगति से जलाते हैं और वन अकेलेपन से।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

If your mind has no settled direction, changing your surroundings will not fix it. Crowds will irritate you and solitude will feel empty; the steadiness has to come from within.

अगर मन की कोई स्थिर दिशा नहीं, तो जगह बदलने से बात नहीं बनेगी। भीड़ खिजाएगी और अकेलापन खाली लगेगा; स्थिरता भीतर से आनी होगी।

Chanakya says a person of unsettled purpose finds peace neither in society nor in solitude.

13.17 Chanakya

यथा खनित्वा खनित्रेण भूतले वारि विन्दति । तथा गुरुगतां विद्यां शुश्रूषुरधिगच्छति ॥

yathā khanitvā khanitreṇa bhūtale vāri vindati | tathā gurugatāṃ vidyāṃ śuśrūṣuradhigacchati ||

As one who digs with a spade finds water in the earth, so the student who serves and listens attentively obtains the knowledge that rests in the teacher.

जैसे कुदाल से खोदने वाला धरती में पानी पा लेता है, वैसे ही सेवा और ध्यान से सुनने वाला शिष्य गुरु में स्थित विद्या को प्राप्त कर लेता है।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Learning takes steady effort and respectful attention. Keep asking, keep listening, keep showing up, and what a good teacher knows will reach you.

सीखने के लिए लगातार प्रयास और आदरपूर्वक ध्यान चाहिए। पूछते रहिए, सुनते रहिए, आते रहिए, तो अच्छे शिक्षक का ज्ञान आप तक पहुँचेगा।

A simile for learning: knowledge held by a teacher is drawn out by a patient, attentive student, as water is reached by digging.

13.18 Chanakya

कर्मायत्तं फलं पुंसां बुद्धिः कर्मानुसारिणी । तथाऽपि सुधियश्चार्याः सुविचार्यैव कुर्वते ॥

karmāyattaṃ phalaṃ puṃsāṃ buddhiḥ karmānusāriṇī | tathā'pi sudhiyaścāryāḥ suvicāryaiva kurvate ||

People's results depend on their actions, and the intellect follows action. Even so, the wise and noble act only after careful thought.

मनुष्य का फल कर्म के अधीन है और बुद्धि भी कर्म के अनुसार चलती है। फिर भी बुद्धिमान और श्रेष्ठ लोग भली-भाँति विचार करके ही काम करते हैं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Our habits and circumstances shape how we think, but that is no reason to stop thinking. Careful reflection is how we change the pattern.

हमारी आदतें और परिस्थितियाँ हमारी सोच को ढालती हैं, पर यह सोचना छोड़ देने का कारण नहीं। सोच-विचार से ही हम उस ढर्रे को बदलते हैं।

Chanakya admits that results follow past action and even thinking follows it, yet the wise still think carefully before acting.

13.19 Chanakya

एकाक्षरप्रदातारं यो गुरुं नाऽभिवन्दते । श्वानयोनिशतं भुक्त्वा चांडालेष्वभिजायते ॥

ekākṣarapradātāraṃ yo guruṃ nā'bhivandate | śvānayoniśataṃ bhuktvā cāṃḍāleṣvabhijāyate ||

One who does not honour a teacher who has given him even a single syllable is born a hundred times as a dog and then among cāṇḍālas.

जो एक अक्षर देने वाले गुरु का भी आदर नहीं करता, वह सौ बार कुत्ते की योनि भोगकर चांडालों में जन्म लेता है।

The verse uses birth among cāṇḍālas as a punishment, reflecting the caste prejudice of its time. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth; this verse must never be used to rank, insult or exclude any community. Respecting teachers also never means tolerating abuse from them.

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Behind the harsh words is a sound point: be grateful to everyone who has taught you something, however small.

कठोर शब्दों के पीछे एक सही बात है: जिसने भी आपको थोड़ा-सा भी सिखाया हो, उसके प्रति कृतज्ञ रहिए।

A harsh traditional threat about disrespecting a teacher, using rebirth as a dog and among cāṇḍālas (a community then treated as outcaste) as the punishment.

13.20 Chanakya

युगान्ते प्रचलेन्मेरुः कल्पान्ते सप्त सागराः । साधवः प्रतिपन्नार्थान्न चलन्ति कदाचन ॥

yugānte pracalenmeruḥ kalpānte sapta sāgarāḥ | sādhavaḥ pratipannārthānna calanti kadācana ||

At the end of an age Mount Meru may move; at the end of a kalpa the seven seas may shift. But the good never waver from a purpose they have taken on.

युग के अंत में मेरु पर्वत भी हिल सकता है, कल्प के अंत में सातों समुद्र भी; पर सज्जन अपनी स्वीकार की हुई बात से कभी नहीं डिगते।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Keep your word. A person whose promises hold even when it is hard becomes someone others can build their lives around.

अपनी बात के पक्के रहिए। जिसका वचन मुश्किल में भी टिकता है, वही ऐसा व्यक्ति बनता है जिस पर दूसरे भरोसा कर सकें।

Chanakya praises the steadfastness of good people: mountains and oceans may move at the end of an age, but they do not go back on what they have undertaken.

13.21 Chanakya

पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि अन्नमापः सुभाषितम् । मूढैः पाषाणखण्डेषु रत्नसंख्या विधीयते ॥

pṛthivyāṃ trīṇi ratnāni annamāpaḥ subhāṣitam | mūḍhaiḥ pāṣāṇakhaṇḍeṣu ratnasaṃkhyā vidhīyate ||

On earth there are three jewels: food, water and good speech. Fools give the name of jewels to pieces of stone.

पृथ्वी पर तीन रत्न हैं: अन्न, जल और सुभाषित (मधुर, हितकारी वचन)। मूर्ख लोग पत्थर के टुकड़ों को रत्न कहते हैं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

The things that truly sustain life, food, water and kind, wise words, are worth more than gold or gems. Value them, don't waste them, and share them.

जो चीज़ें सच में जीवन चलाती हैं, अन्न, पानी और अच्छे वचन, वे सोने और हीरों से अधिक मूल्यवान हैं। इनकी कद्र कीजिए, इन्हें बर्बाद मत कीजिए और बाँटिए।

One of the best-known subhāṣitas: the earth's true jewels are food, water and good speech.
