Chapter 14

14.1 Chanakya

ātmāparādhavṛkṣasya phalānyetāni dehinām | dāridrya-roga-duḥkhāni bandhanavyasanāni ca ||

Poverty, disease, sorrow, captivity and calamities: these are the fruits, for embodied beings, of the tree of their own offences.

Do not use this verse to blame people who are poor, ill or suffering; much hardship is not anyone's fault. It is not medical advice: illness needs treatment. If you are weighed down by guilt or despair, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Some of our troubles do grow from our own choices, and honesty about that helps us change. But many hardships come from circumstances, other people or plain chance.

Chanakya traces suffering to one's own wrongdoing, picturing it as a tree whose fruits are hardship.

14.2 Chanakya

punarvittampunarmitraṃ punarbhāryā punarmahī | etatsarvaṃ punarlabhyaṃ na śarīraṃ punaḥ punaḥ ||

Wealth can be had again, a friend again, a wife again, land again. All this can be regained, but not this body, again and again.

Listing a wife among things that can be 'had again' reflects the outlook of its time; a spouse is a person, not a possession. If a loss has left you hopeless, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Losses of money, land or position can be recovered over time; your health and life cannot. Don't wreck your body chasing what can be won back.

Chanakya reminds the reader that almost everything lost can be regained except the body and life itself.

14.3 Chanakya

bahūnāṃ caiva sattvānāṃ samavāyo ripuñjayaḥ | varṣandhārādharo meghastṛṇairapi nivāryate ||

A union of many, even of small beings, conquers the enemy. A raining cloud, pouring down streams, is held off even by blades of grass (woven into a thatch).

Meaning today and context

Alone we may be weak, but together ordinary people can withstand great pressure. Build teams, neighbourhood ties and family bonds before the storm comes.

A simile for strength in unity: many small things together can stop what none could stop alone.

14.4 Chanakya

jale tailaṃ khale guhyaṃ pātre dānaṃ manāgapi | prājñe śāstraṃ svayaṃ yāti vistāraṃ vastuśaktitaḥ ||

Oil on water, a secret with a wicked person, a gift to a worthy recipient, and learning in a wise person: even a little of each spreads out by itself, by the nature of the thing.

Meaning today and context

Small things in the right or wrong hands grow. A secret told to a gossip will spread; a little help to the right person or a little knowledge to a thoughtful one multiplies.

Chanakya lists four things that spread by their own nature even when small.

14.5 Chanakya

dharmākhyāne śmaśāne ca rogiṇāṃ yā matirbhavet | sā sarvadaiva tiṣṭheccetko na mucyeta bandhanāt ||

The state of mind people have when hearing a discourse on dharma, at a cremation ground, and when ill: if that stayed with them always, who would not be freed from bondage?

Meaning today and context

Moments of loss or illness show us clearly what matters, but the clarity fades fast. Write down what you learned in such moments and return to it.

Chanakya observes the sober clarity people feel at a religious discourse, at a cremation ground and in sickness, and wishes it would last.

14.6 Chanakya

utpannapaścāttāpasya buddhirbhavati yādṛśī | tādṛśī yadi pūrvaṃ syātkasya syānna mahodayaḥ ||

The understanding a person has once regret has arisen: if it were there beforehand, who would not attain great good fortune?

Meaning today and context

Before a big step, imagine looking back on it with regret and ask what you would wish you had done. Hindsight used in advance is foresight.

A maxim on foresight: the wisdom that comes with regret would bring great success if it came beforehand.

14.7 Chanakya

dāne tapasi śaurye vā vijñāne vinaye naye | vismayo na hi kartavyo bahuratnā vasundharā ||

In charity, austerity, valour, knowledge, humility and good policy, one should not be puffed up with wonder at oneself: the earth holds many jewels.

Meaning today and context

However good you are at something, there are others as good or better. Remembering that keeps you humble and still learning.

Chanakya warns against pride in one's own excellence, since the earth holds many gems.

14.8 Chanakya

dūrastho'pi na dūrastho yo yasya manasi sthitaḥ | yo yasya hṛdaye nāsti samīpastho'pi dūrataḥ ||

One who dwells in someone's mind is not far even when far away. One who is not in someone's heart is far even when standing near.

Meaning today and context

Closeness is not about living in the same city or house. Keep the people you love in mind and heart, and the distance matters less.

A verse on closeness: distance is measured by the heart, not by miles.

14.9 Chanakya

yasmācca priyamicchettu tasya brūyātsadā priyam | vyādho mṛgavadhaṃ gantuṃ gītaṃ gāyati susvaram ||

From whomever one wants something pleasing, to him one should always speak pleasantly. The hunter, going to kill a deer, sings a song in a sweet voice.

This verse describes flattery as a tool for getting what one wants. It is not a licence to manipulate or deceive anyone. If someone is pressuring or deceiving you, especially over money, seek help; for danger call 112.

Meaning today and context

Read it as a warning, not a method: sweet words can be bait. Be wary when someone is unusually flattering just as they want something from you.

A cynical maxim: speak pleasantly to whoever you want something from, as a hunter sings sweetly to lure a deer.

14.10 Chanakya

atyāsannā vināśāya dūrasthā na phalapradāḥ | sevyatāṃ madhyabhāgena rājavahnigurustriyaḥ ||

Too close, they bring ruin; too far, they give no benefit. The king, fire, the teacher and women should be approached from the middle distance.

Placing women alongside fire and kings as things to be handled at a distance reflects the prejudices of its time. It is not this app's view and must never be used to demean, distrust or control women.

Meaning today and context

With a boss or anyone powerful, keeping a respectful middle distance, neither overly familiar nor aloof, often works best. The verse's grouping of women with fire is a prejudice of its time.

Traditional advice on dealing with powerful or dangerous things from a middle distance; it lumps women together with the king, fire and the guru.

14.11 Chanakya

agnirāpaḥ striyo mūrkhāḥ sarpo rājakulāni ca | nityaṃ yatnena sevyāni sadyaḥ prāṇaharāṇi ṣaṭ ||

Fire, water, women, fools, snakes and royal households should always be dealt with carefully; these six can take life in an instant.

Listing women with fire, snakes and fools as dangers reflects the prejudices of its time. It is not this app's view and must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. If you face violence, call 112 or the women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Fire, water, snakes and unchecked power do call for care, and so does dealing with someone who acts without thinking. Including women in this list is a prejudice the verse carries from its time.

A list of six things said to be dangerous and to be handled with constant care; it includes women among them.

14.12 Chanakya

sa jīvati guṇā yasya yasya dharmaḥ sa jīvati | guṇadharmavihīnasya jīvitaṃ niṣprayojanam ||

He lives who has good qualities; he lives who has dharma. The life of one without qualities and dharma has no purpose.

This is a call to cultivate virtue, not a judgement that anyone's life is worthless. If you feel your life has no purpose, please reach out to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

What gives a life its meaning is the good it holds and does. Cultivating character is something anyone can begin at any time.

Chanakya says a person truly lives only through good qualities and dharma.

14.13 Chanakya

yadicchasi vaśīkartuṃ jagadekena karmaṇā | puraḥ pañcadaśāsyebhyo gāṃ carantīṃ nivāraya ||

If you wish to bring the world under your control by a single act, stop the cow that grazes in front of the fifteen mouths.

Meaning today and context

The common reading is: master your own senses and especially your tongue, and you will win over people. Self-control in speech and appetite does more than any outside effort.

A riddle verse. The 'cow' (gām, also meaning speech or the senses) grazing before the 'fifteen mouths' is commonly read as the restless senses and tongue moving among their objects.

14.14 Chanakya

prastāvasadṛśaṃ vākyaṃ prabhāvasadṛśaṃ priyam | ātmaśaktisamaṃ kopaṃ yo jānāti sa paṇḍitaḥ ||

Speech suited to the occasion, kindness in keeping with one's standing, anger in proportion to one's strength: one who knows these is wise.

Meaning today and context

Fit your words to the moment, your promises to what you can actually deliver, and your anger to what you can handle. Overreaching in any of these backfires.

Chanakya defines the wise person by a sense of proportion in speech, favour and anger.

14.15 Chanakya

eka eva padārthastu tridhā bhavati vīkṣitaḥ | kuṇapaḥ kāminī māṃsaṃ yogibhiḥ kāmibhiḥ śvabhiḥ ||

One and the same thing is seen in three ways: as a corpse by yogis, as a desirable woman by the lustful, and as meat by dogs.

The example treats a woman's body as an object for yogis, the lustful and dogs alike. That reflects the prejudices of its time, is not this app's view, and must never be used to demean or objectify women.

Meaning today and context

What we see depends heavily on the mind we bring. The verse makes the point using a woman's body as the thing looked at, which reflects the outlook of its time.

A verse on perception: the same body appears three ways to three viewers. Its example reduces a woman's body to an object.

14.16 Chanakya

susiddhamauṣadhaṃ dharmaṃ gṛhacchidraṃ ca maithunam | kubhuktaṃ kuśrutaṃ caiva matimānna prakāśayet ||

A well-prepared medicine, one's dharma (good deeds), the flaws of one's home, sexual union, a bad meal and something shameful heard: a sensible person does not make these public.

Keeping household matters private never means hiding abuse or violence; if anyone at home is in danger, tell someone you trust or call 112 / women's helpline 181 / Childline 1098. Secrecy about medicine is not medical advice; always tell your doctor what you take.

Meaning today and context

Some things are better kept private: your good deeds, intimate life and the small embarrassments of your household. Discretion protects dignity and relationships.

A list of private matters a sensible person keeps to himself.

14.17 Chanakya

tāvanmaunena nīyante kokilaiścaiva vāsarāḥ | yāvatsarvajanānandadāyinī vākpravartate ||

Koels pass their days in silence for as long as it takes, until the time comes when their voice, which gives joy to all people, comes forth.

Meaning today and context

There is a time to stay quiet and a time to speak. Wait until your words will help or delight, rather than talking just to fill the silence.

A simile from nature: the koel stays silent through the dry months until spring, when its voice delights everyone.

14.18 Chanakya

dharmaṃ dhanaṃ ca dhānyaṃ ca gurorvacanamauṣadham | sugṛhītaṃ ca karttavyamanyathā tu na jīvati ||

Dharma, wealth, grain, the teacher's word and medicine: these must be well taken in and carefully kept; otherwise one does not live (well).

This is not medical or financial advice. Take medicines as your doctor prescribes, and get qualified advice on money matters.

Meaning today and context

Good advice, savings, food and medicine only help if you take them seriously and handle them carefully. Half-hearted use wastes them.

Chanakya lists things that must be received and handled with care, or they fail to sustain life.

14.19 Chanakya

tyaja durjanasaṃsargaṃ bhaja sādhusamāgamam | kuru puṇyamahorātraṃ smara nityamanityataḥ ||

Give up the company of the wicked; seek the company of the good; do good deeds day and night; always remember the eternal, apart from what passes.

Meaning today and context

Choose your company carefully, keep doing good, and remember what lasts amid what changes. These four habits steady a whole life.

A closing summary of practical spiritual life in four imperatives.
