Chapter 15

15.1 Chanakya

yasya cittaṃ dravībhūtaṃ kṛpayā sarvajantuṣu | tasya jñānena mokṣeṇa kiṃ jaṭābhasmalepanaiḥ ||

One whose heart has melted with compassion for all creatures: what need has he of knowledge, of liberation, of matted locks and smearing with ash?

Meaning today and context

Kindness is the heart of spiritual life. Rituals, symbols and learning matter less than how you actually treat living beings.

Chanakya puts compassion above outward religious signs: a heart that melts for all beings needs no matted hair or ash.

15.2 Chanakya

ekamevākṣaraṃ yastu guruḥ śiṣyaṃ prabodhayet | pṛthivyāṃ nāsti taddravyaṃ yaddattvā cānṛṇī bhavet ||

If a teacher awakens a disciple with even a single syllable, there is no wealth on earth by giving which the disciple could be free of that debt.

Gratitude to a teacher never means obeying one who exploits, abuses or demands money or control. Respect is owed to genuine teaching, not to misuse of the guru's position.

Meaning today and context

What a good teacher gives cannot be paid for; it can only be honoured, by gratitude and by passing it on to others.

On the debt owed to a teacher: even one syllable taught creates a debt that no wealth can repay.

15.3 Chanakya

khalānāṃ kaṇṭakānāṃ ca dvividhaiva pratikriyā | upānadmukhabhaṅgo vā dūrataiva visarjanam ||

For the wicked and for thorns there are only two remedies: crushing the face (or tip) with a shoe, or keeping them far away.

This is not a licence for violence, revenge or humiliation. Keep your distance from harmful people, and if you are in danger or being abused, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

The usable part is the second remedy: keep your distance from people who harm others. The first is a call to violence that should not be followed.

A harsh maxim pairing wicked people with thorns: either crush them with a shoe or keep well away.

15.4 Chanakya

kucailinaṃ dantamalopadhāriṇaṃ | bahvāśinaṃ niṣṭhurabhāṣiṇaṃ ca | sūryodaye vā'stamite śayānaṃ | vimuñcati śrīryadi cakrapāṇiḥ ||

One who wears dirty clothes, keeps his teeth unclean, eats too much, speaks harshly, and sleeps at sunrise and sunset: fortune abandons him, even if he were Viṣṇu, the bearer of the discus.

Not medical or health advice, and not a reason to blame anyone for poverty. Night-shift workers, the ill, or anyone sleeping at odd hours for good reason are not at fault.

Meaning today and context

Small daily habits, cleanliness, moderate eating, gentle speech, a steady routine, shape how others see us and how well we work. Neglect them and opportunities quietly slip away.

Chanakya lists habits said to drive away Śrī (fortune, Lakṣmī), even from Viṣṇu himself.

15.5 Chanakya

tyajanti mitrāṇi dhanairvihīnaṃ | dārāśca bhṛtyāśca suhṛjjanāśca | taṃ cārthavantaṃ punarāśrayante | artho hi loke puruṣasya bandhuḥ ||

Friends, wife, servants and well-wishers abandon a man who has lost his wealth. When he has wealth again, they come back to him. For in this world, wealth is a man's kinsman.

This cynical verse should not be offered to someone who has just lost money or been left alone. Not every relationship is about money. If financial loss or loneliness leaves you hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Hard times do show who stands by us, and some relationships are transactional. But many people do stay through loss; this verse describes the worst of human behaviour, not all of it.

A cynical observation that people leave a man who loses his wealth and return when he regains it.

15.6 Chanakya

anyāyopārjitaṃ dravyaṃ daśa varṣāṇi tiṣṭhati | prāpte ekādaśe varṣe samūlaṃ ca vinaśyati ||

Wealth earned unjustly stays for ten years; when the eleventh year comes, it perishes along with its root.

Meaning today and context

Money made by cheating may seem to stay for a while, but it carries the seeds of its own collapse and often takes more with it. Earn in ways you can stand behind.

Chanakya warns that wealth gained by injustice does not last.

15.7 Chanakya

ayuktaṃ svāmino yuktaṃ yuktaṃ nīcasya dūṣaṇam | amṛtaṃ rāhave mṛtyurviṣaṃ śaṃkarabhūṣaṇam ||

What is improper becomes proper for a master; what is proper becomes a fault in a lowly person. Nectar became death for Rāhu, while poison became an ornament for Śaṅkara (Śiva).

This describes a double standard; it is not an endorsement that the powerful may do wrong. 'Lowly' should be read by conduct, never by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

People often judge actions by who does them rather than by what is done. Notice this double standard; it is a description of how the world can be unfair, not a rule to follow.

A cynical observation of double standards: what is improper becomes proper for a master, while what is proper becomes a fault in a lowly person, illustrated from myth.

15.8 Chanakya

tadbhojanaṃ yaddvijabhuktaśeṣaṃ | tatsauhṛdaṃ yatkriyate parasmin | sā prājñatā yā na karoti pāpaṃ | dambhaṃ vinā yaḥ kriyate sa dharmaḥ ||

That is food which remains after the twice-born (guests) have eaten; that is friendship which is shown to others; that is wisdom which does no wrong; that which is done without hypocrisy is dharma.

'Twice-born' (dvija) refers to the upper varṇas of its time. Read it as honouring guests and the learned; it must never be used to rank people by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Share first, be a friend to people beyond your own circle, let cleverness stay clean, and do good without show. Each is a test of whether a virtue is real.

Chanakya redefines four ideals: true food, true friendship, true wisdom and true dharma.

15.9 Chanakya

maṇirluṇṭhati pādāgre kācaḥ śirasi dhāryate | kraya vikrayavelāyāṃ kācaḥ kāco maṇirmaṇiḥ ||

A gem may roll at one's feet while glass is worn on the head; but at the time of buying and selling, glass is glass and a gem is a gem.

Meaning today and context

Being overlooked does not change your real worth, and being flattered does not create it. When it truly counts, real quality is recognised.

A simile on true worth: a gem may lie at one's feet and glass be worn on the head, but in the market each is valued for what it is.

15.10 Chanakya

anantaśāstraṃ bahulāśca vidyāḥ | alpaṃ ca kālo bahuvighnatā ca | yatsārabhūtaṃ tadupāsanīyaṃ | haṃso yathā kṣīramivāmbumadhyāt ||

Scriptures are endless and branches of learning many; time is short and obstacles many. What is essential should be pursued, as the swan takes milk from the midst of water.

Meaning today and context

You cannot learn everything, so learn what matters most. Whether studying for an exam or reading for life, pick out the essence and leave the rest.

Advice on learning: knowledge is endless and time short, so take the essence, like the swan that is said to draw milk out of water.

15.11 Chanakya

dūrāgataṃ pathi śrāntaṃ vṛthā ca gṛhamāgatam | anarcayitvā yo bhuṅkte sa vai cāṇḍāla ucyate ||

One who eats without first honouring a guest who has come from far, tired from the road, arriving at the house unexpectedly: he is called a cāṇḍāla.

The verse uses 'cāṇḍāla', a community then treated as outcaste, as an insult. Worth is by conduct, never by birth; this word must never be used to insult or exclude any community.

Meaning today and context

Look after the tired, unexpected visitor before yourself. Ordinary hospitality, a glass of water, a seat, a meal, is a mark of character.

On hospitality: Chanakya condemns eating without first honouring a weary guest, using a caste label as the insult.

15.12 Chanakya

paṭhanti caturo vedāndharmaśāstrāṇyanekaśaḥ | ātmānaṃ naiva jānanti darvī pākarasaṃ yathā ||

They recite the four Vedas and many treatises on dharma, yet they do not know the Self, just as the ladle does not know the taste of the food.

Meaning today and context

Knowing a lot is not the same as understanding it. Let what you read change how you see yourself and live, or it stays like food on a ladle.

Chanakya mocks book learning that never turns inward, with the image of a ladle that stirs food but never tastes it.

15.13 Chanakya

dhanyā dvijamayī naukā viparītā bhavārṇave | tarantyadhogatāḥ sarve uparisthāḥ patantyadhaḥ ||

Blessed is the boat made of the twice-born, which works in reverse on the ocean of existence: all who go below cross over, and those who stand on top fall down.

'Twice-born' (dvija) reflects the varṇa order of its time. Read it as the wise and learned of any background; it must never be used to rank people by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

The usable point is humility before the wise: those who bow and learn get through; those who stand on their pride sink.

A paradoxical image praising the twice-born as a boat over the ocean of worldly life, where those who stay low cross and those who stand high fall.

15.14 Chanakya

ayamamṛtanidhānaṃ nāyako'pyauṣadhīnāṃ | amṛtamayaśarīraḥ kāntiyukto'pi candraḥ | bhavati vigataraśmirmaṇḍalaṃ prāpya bhānoḥ | parasadananiviṣṭaḥ ko laghutvaṃ na yāti ||

This moon, a treasury of nectar, lord of the healing herbs, whose body is made of nectar and who is full of radiance, loses its rays on reaching the sun's orb. Who, living in another's house, does not become small?

Meaning today and context

Depending on someone else's roof or favour, even a capable person feels diminished. Where you can, build a footing of your own; and be kind to those who must stay with you.

A simile in a longer metre: even the moon loses its light when it enters the sun's orb, so anyone staying in another's house loses standing.

15.15 Chanakya

alirayaṃ nalinīdalamadhyagaḥ | kamalinīmakarandamadālasaḥ | vidhivaśātparadeśamupāgataḥ | kuṭajapuṣparasaṃ bahu manyate ||

This bee, which once lived among lotus petals, drowsy with the nectar of the lotus, having come by fate to a foreign land, now thinks much of the juice of the kuṭaja flower.

Meaning today and context

Circumstances change, and wisdom lies in valuing what is available now instead of mourning what used to be. Adapting is not defeat.

A simile in a longer metre: a bee used to lotus nectar, driven by fate to a foreign land, comes to prize the humble kuṭaja flower.

15.16 Chanakya

pītaḥ kruddhena tātaścaraṇatalahato vallabho yena roṣād | ābālyādvipravaryaiḥ svavadanavivare dhāryate vairiṇī me | gehaṃ me chedayanti pratidivasamumākāntapūjānimittaṃ | tasmātkhinnā sadāhaṃ dvijakulanilayaṃ nātha yuktaṃ tyajāmi ||

'My father (the ocean) was drunk up by one in anger; my beloved was struck with the sole of a foot by one in rage; from childhood the best of brahmins hold my rival (Sarasvatī) in their mouths; every day they cut down my home (the lotus) for the worship of Umā's lord. Therefore, grieved, I always leave the dwellings of brahmins, O Lord; it is fitting.'

Meaning today and context

A witty traditional explanation of why learning and wealth so often live apart. It is a story, not advice.

A playful verse in which Lakṣmī, goddess of fortune, explains to Viṣṇu why she avoids the homes of brahmins: Agastya drank up her father the ocean, Bhṛgu kicked her husband, brahmins keep her rival Sarasvatī (learning) in their mouths, and they pluck her lotus home daily for Śiva's worship.

15.17 Chanakya

baṃdhanāni khalu santi bahūni | premarajjukṛtabandhanamanyat | dārubhedanipuṇo'pi ṣaḍaṅghriḥ | niṣkriyo bhavati paṃkajakośe ||

There are indeed many bonds, but the bond made by the rope of love is another thing altogether. The bee, skilled at boring through wood, becomes motionless inside the lotus bud.

Meaning today and context

Love can hold even the strong more firmly than force. It is also worth asking whether a bond of love is keeping you from what you need to do.

A simile on the bond of love: the bee that can bore through wood lies still inside a closed lotus rather than harm it.

15.18 Chanakya

chinno'pi caṃdanatarurna jahāti gandhaṃ | vṛddho'pi vāraṇapatirna jahāti līlām | yaṃtrārpito madhuratāṃ na jahāti cekṣuḥ | kṣīṇo'pi na tyajati śīlaguṇānkulīnaḥ ||

Even when cut, the sandalwood tree does not give up its fragrance; even when old, the lord of elephants does not give up his grace; even when put through the press, sugarcane does not give up its sweetness; even when reduced, a person of noble character does not abandon good conduct and virtue.

'Kulīna' literally means 'of good family'. Read it as a person of good character from any background; nobility comes by conduct, never by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Hard times test character. Losing money, health or status need not mean losing your decency; keeping it is what makes a person truly noble.

A verse in vasantatilakā metre: like sandalwood, an old elephant and sugarcane, a person of good character keeps their virtue even when brought low.

15.19 Chanakya

urvyāṃ ko'pi mahīdharo laghutaro dorbhyāṃ dhṛto līlayā | tena tvaṃ divi bhūtale ca satataṃ govardhanī gīyase | tvāṃ trailokyadharaṃ vahāmi kucayoragreṇa tadgaṇyate | kiṃvā keśava bhāṣaṇena bahunā puṇyairyaśo labhyate ||

'You held up some little mountain on earth with your two arms, playfully, and for that you are always sung of in heaven and on earth as the Govardhana-holder. I carry you, who hold up the three worlds, on the tips of my breasts, and what is that counted for? What is the use of much talk, Keśava? Fame is won by good fortune.'

Meaning today and context

A witty reminder that fame does not always go to whoever carries the most; recognition depends partly on fortune. It is a love poem, not advice.

A playful devotional verse in which a lover of Kṛṣṇa (traditionally read as Rādhā or a gopī) teases him about his fame for lifting Govardhana hill.
