Chapter 8

8.1 Chanakya

adhamā dhanamicchanti dhanaṃ mānaṃ ca madhyamāḥ | uttamā mānamicchanti māno hi mahatāṃ dhanam ||

The lowest want wealth; the middling want wealth and honour; the best want honour, for honour is the wealth of the great.

Meaning today and context

What you are willing to trade your good name for tells you a lot. Money can be earned again; a reputation for integrity is far harder to rebuild.

Chanakya ranks people by what they want most: money, money and honour, or honour alone.

8.2 Chanakya

ikṣurāpaḥ payo mūlaṃ tāmbūlaṃ phalamauṣadham | bhakṣayitvā'pi kartavyāḥ snānadānādikāḥ kriyāḥ ||

Sugarcane, water, milk, roots, betel, fruit and medicine: even after eating these, rites such as bathing and giving may still be performed.

Meaning today and context

A traditional rule about what does and does not break readiness for ritual. Its spirit is that religious practice need not be rigid about small things like water or medicine.

A rule of ritual purity: certain light foods do not prevent one from performing rites.

8.3 Chanakya

dīpo bhakṣayate dhvāntaṃ kajjalaṃ ca prasūyate | yadannaṃ bhakṣyate nityaṃ jāyate tādṛśī prajā ||

A lamp devours darkness and gives birth to soot. Whatever food one eats day after day, such is the offspring that is born.

Not medical or dietary advice. A child's nature is not determined by the parents' food, and no one should be blamed for a child's character on that basis.

Meaning today and context

What you consume, in food, media and company, shapes what comes out of you. Take in what is clean and nourishing if you want your words and work to be so.

A lamp eats darkness and gives off soot; Chanakya uses it to say that what we take in shapes what we produce.

8.4 Chanakya

vittaṃ dehi guṇānviteṣu matimannā'nyatra dehi kvacit | prāptaṃ vārinidherjalaṃ ghanamucāṃ mādhuryayuktaṃ sadā | jīvāḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāśca sakalā saṃjīvya bhūmaṇḍalaṃ | bhūyaḥ paśya tadeva koṭiguṇitaṃ gacchasvamambhonidhim ||

Give your wealth to those endowed with virtue, wise one, and never elsewhere. The water of the ocean, taken up by the clouds, becomes ever sweet; having revived all living beings, moving and unmoving, across the earth, see it go back once more to the ocean, multiplied ten million times.

General wisdom about giving, not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Help given to the right people does not vanish; it does good along the way and comes back many times over. Give with thought, to those who will use it well.

A śārdūlavikrīḍita verse: the cloud takes salt water from the sea and returns it sweet and multiplied.

8.5 Chanakya

cāṇḍālānāṃ sahasraiśca sūribhistattvadarśibhiḥ | eko hi yavanaḥ prokto na nīco yavanātparaḥ ||

Learned seers of the truth have declared that one yavana equals a thousand caṇḍālas; there is none lower than a yavana.

This verse expresses prejudice against foreigners, other communities and those once called outcaste. It is not the view of this app and must never be used to demean any community, religion, nationality or caste.

Meaning today and context

This is a prejudice of its time against foreigners and against those then counted outcaste. It has no place today; respect is owed to every person.

A verse reflecting the prejudice of its age against the 'yavana' (foreigner) and the caṇḍāla.

8.6 Chanakya

tailābhyaṅge citādhūme maithune kṣaurakarmaṇi | tāvadbhavati cāṇḍālo yāvatsnānaṃ na cācaret ||

After an oil massage, after the smoke of a funeral pyre, after intercourse and after a haircut, one remains a caṇḍāla until one bathes.

Worth comes from conduct, never from birth. This verse reflects the caste and purity ideas of its time and must never be used to rank, shun or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Behind it is ordinary hygiene: wash after these things. The use of a caste name as a word for 'unclean' reflects old discrimination and is rejected.

A rule of ritual impurity from the old purity code.

8.7 Chanakya

ajīrṇe bheṣajaṃ vāri jīrṇe vāri balapradam | bhojane cā'mṛtaṃ vāri bhojanānte viṣapradam ||

When food is undigested, water is medicine; when it is digested, water gives strength; during a meal water is nectar, and at the end of a meal it is poison.

Not medical advice. Do not change how you drink water based on this verse; ask a doctor, especially for digestive or kidney conditions.

Meaning today and context

This reflects the health lore of its time. Follow a doctor's advice on what and when to drink.

A traditional claim about when water helps and when it harms.

8.8 Chanakya

hataṃ jñānaṃ kriyāhīnaṃ hataścā'jñānato naraḥ | hataṃ nirnāyakaṃ sainyaṃ striyo naṣṭā hyabhartṛkāḥ ||

Knowledge without action is dead; a man is dead through ignorance; an army without a leader is dead; and women without husbands are ruined.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time and is not the view of this app. It must never be used to demean, distrust, judge or control women. Widowed, single and divorced women are not 'ruined'.

Meaning today and context

The first lines still hold: knowledge you never act on is wasted, and a team without leadership falls apart. The line on women without husbands reflects the dependence forced on women in its time.

A list of things that are 'as good as dead', mixing a sound point with a view of women of its time.

8.9 Chanakya

vṛddhakāle mṛtā bhāryā bandhuhaste gataṃ dhanam | bhojanaṃ ca parādhīnaṃ tisraḥ pum̐sāṃ viḍambanāḥ ||

A wife who dies in one's old age, wealth that has passed into the hands of relatives, and food that depends on others: these three are the humiliations of a man.

Losing a spouse is a grief to be mourned, not a humiliation; the verse does not dismiss it. Not financial or legal advice. If loneliness or grief becomes too heavy, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Old age is hardest when you lose your companion, your means and your independence. Plan for later years, keep some control over your own resources, and stay close to those who are alone.

Three misfortunes that can mock a man in later life.

8.10 Chanakya

agnihotraṃ vinā vedāḥ na ca dānaṃ vinā kriyāḥ | na bhāvena vinā siddhistasmādbhāvo hi kāraṇam ||

The Vedas are nothing without the fire offering, and rites are nothing without giving. There is no success without inner feeling; therefore feeling is truly the cause.

Meaning today and context

Going through the motions is not enough. Whether in prayer, work or relationships, it is the heart you put in that makes it count.

Chanakya says that inner feeling (bhāva) is what makes any practice succeed.

8.11 Chanakya

na devo vidyate kāṣṭhe na pāṣāṇe na mṛṇmaye | bhāve hi vidyate devastasmādbhāvo hi kāraṇam ||

God is not in wood, nor in stone, nor in clay. God dwells in inner feeling; therefore feeling is truly the cause.

Meaning today and context

An image or a temple is a support, not the thing itself. What matters is the sincerity and love you bring.

A continuation of 8.10: God is found in devotion, not in material images.

8.12 Chanakya

kāṣṭha-pāṣāṇa-dhātūnāṃ kṛtvā bhāvena sevanam | śraddhayā ca tayā siddhistasya viṣṇoḥ prasādataḥ ||

When one serves an image of wood, stone or metal with feeling and with faith, then by that faith comes success, through the grace of Vishnu.

Meaning today and context

The form of worship matters less than the faith in it. An image honoured with real devotion becomes a doorway, not an idol to be mocked.

Chanakya qualifies 8.11: worship of images still bears fruit when done with feeling.

8.13 Chanakya

śāntitulyaṃ tapo nāsti na santoṣātparaṃ sukham | na tṛṣṇayā paro vyādhirna ca dharmo dayā paraḥ ||

There is no austerity equal to peace of mind, no happiness higher than contentment, no disease worse than craving, and no dharma higher than compassion.

Meaning today and context

Keeping your mind calm is harder and worth more than outward hardships. Craving keeps you sick with wanting; contentment and kindness heal.

Four comparisons naming what is highest: peace, contentment, freedom from craving, compassion.

8.14 Chanakya

krodho vaivasvato rājā tṛṣṇā vaitaraṇī nadī | vidyā kāmadudhā dhenuḥ santoṣo nandanaṃ vanam ||

Anger is Yama, the king of death; craving is the Vaitarani, the river of hell; learning is the wish-fulfilling cow; contentment is the garden of Nandana.

Meaning today and context

Anger destroys like death, and craving drowns you in a river you never get across. Learning gives you what you need, and contentment is a paradise you can live in now.

Four mythological images for anger, craving, learning and contentment.

8.15 Chanakya

guṇo bhūṣayate rūpaṃ śīlaṃ bhūṣayate kulam | siddhirbhūṣayate vidyāṃ bhogo bhūṣayate dhanam ||

Virtue adorns beauty; good character adorns one's family; mastery adorns learning; enjoyment adorns wealth.

Meaning today and context

Each gift is completed by something else: looks by goodness, a good name by good conduct, knowledge by being able to apply it, and money by putting it to use.

Chanakya names what truly adorns four good things.

8.16 Chanakya

nirguṇasya hataṃ rūpaṃ duḥśīlasya hataṃ kulam | asiddhasya hatā vidyā abhogena hataṃ dhanam ||

For one without virtue, beauty is wasted; for one of bad character, family is wasted; for one without mastery, learning is wasted; without use, wealth is wasted.

Meaning today and context

Good looks, a good family, degrees and savings mean little on their own. What you do with them is what counts.

The converse of 8.15.

8.17 Chanakya

śuddhaṃ bhūmigataṃ toyaṃ śuddhā nārī pativratā | śuciḥ kṣemakaro rājā saṃtoṣī brāhmaṇaḥ śuciḥ ||

Water that has reached the ground is pure; a wife devoted to her husband is pure; a king who brings welfare is pure; a contented brahmin is pure.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time and is not the view of this app. It must never be used to demean, distrust, judge or control women. Faithfulness is asked of both partners equally.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is that integrity is found in faithfulness to one's role: a leader who serves people, a scholar free of greed. Purity is not something only women must prove.

A traditional list of what is pure.

8.18 Chanakya

asaṃtuṣṭā dvijā naṣṭāḥ saṃtuṣṭāśca mahībhṛtaḥ | salajjā gaṇikā naṣṭāḥ nirlajjāśca kulāṅganāḥ ||

Discontented brahmins are ruined, and contented kings; a courtesan with modesty is ruined, and family women without it.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time and is not the view of this app. It must never be used to demean, distrust, judge or control women.

Meaning today and context

The underlying idea is that what is a virtue in one role can be a fault in another: a scholar should be content, a leader should keep striving. The remarks on women reflect their age.

A list of things ruined when their nature is reversed, using stereotypes of its time.

8.19 Chanakya

kiṃ kulena viśālena vidyāhīnena dehinām | duṣkulīno'pi vidvāṃśca devairapi supūjyate ||

What use is a great family to people who lack learning? Even one of humble family, if learned, is honoured even by the gods.

Meaning today and context

Your family name opens fewer doors than you think; what you learn and become opens the rest. Wherever you come from, learning earns respect.

Chanakya puts learning above birth.

8.20 Chanakya

vidvānpraśasyate loke vidvānsarvatra gauravam | vidyayā labhate sarvaṃ vidyā sarvatra pūjyate ||

The learned person is praised in the world; the learned person is honoured everywhere. Through learning one gains everything; learning is revered everywhere.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge travels with you and earns respect wherever you go. It is the one investment no one can take away.

A verse in praise of the learned person.

8.21 Chanakya

rūpayauvanasaṃpannā viśālakulasambhavāḥ | vidyāhīnā na śobhante nirgandhā iva kiṃśukāḥ ||

Though endowed with beauty and youth and born in great families, those without learning do not shine, like kiṃśuka flowers without fragrance.

Meaning today and context

Looks, youth and family give a bright first impression, but without substance it fades. Real attractiveness comes from what you know and who you are.

A simile: the kiṃśuka (flame of the forest) is brilliant but has no fragrance.

8.22 Chanakya

māṃsabhakṣaiḥ surāpānaiḥ mūrkhaiścā'kṣaravarjitaiḥ | paśubhiḥ puruṣākārairbhārākrāntā'sti medinī ||

Meat-eaters, drinkers of liquor and illiterate fools are beasts in human shape; by them the earth is weighed down.

Never use this verse to demean anyone for their diet, for drinking or for lack of schooling. If you are struggling with alcohol, help is available: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is a harsh judgement of its time. Drinking can harm, and learning matters, but no one is a 'beast' because of what they eat or whether they could go to school.

A harsh verse calling some kinds of people 'beasts in human form'.

8.23 Chanakya

annahīno dahedrāṣṭraṃ maṃtrahīnaśca ṛtvijaḥ | yajamānaṃ dānahīno nāsti yajñasamo ripuḥ ||

A sacrifice without food (for the people) burns the kingdom; without mantras it burns the priests; without gifts it burns the patron. There is no enemy like such a sacrifice.

Meaning today and context

A ceremony done for show, without feeding people, without sincerity and without generosity, does more harm than good. If you celebrate, share.

On a sacrifice (yajña) done badly: it harms instead of helping.
