Chapter 7

7.1 Chanakya

arthanāśaṃ manastāpaṃ gṛhiṇīcaritāni ca | nīcavākyaṃ cā'pamānaṃ matimānna prakāśayet ||

Loss of wealth, anguish of mind, the goings-on in one's home, a mean person's words, and an insult: a wise person does not make these public.

Privacy is not secrecy about harm. If you are facing abuse at home, distress or debt you cannot handle, do reach out: women's helpline 181, police 112, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Some things lose nothing by staying private and gain nothing by being broadcast: money troubles, family quarrels, an insult someone threw at you. Share them with the few who can help, not with everyone.

Chanakya lists five things a sensible householder keeps to himself: money lost, inner pain, troubles at home, insults from mean people, and humiliation.

7.2 Chanakya

dhanadhānyaprayogeṣu vidyāsaṃgrahaṇeṣu ca | āhāre vyavahāre ca tyaktalajjā sukhī bhavet ||

In dealings with money and grain, in gathering knowledge, in eating and in business, one who sets aside shyness is happy.

Meaning today and context

Don't be too shy to ask for the money you are owed, to ask a question in class, to eat when you are hungry, or to state terms in business. Hesitation in these places costs you and helps no one.

A practical maxim on when shyness only gets in the way.

7.3 Chanakya

santoṣāmṛtatṛptānāṃ yatsukhaṃ śāntireva ca | na ca taddhanalubdhānāmitaścetaśca dhāvatām ||

The happiness and peace that belong to those satisfied by the nectar of contentment do not belong to those greedy for wealth, who run here and there.

Meaning today and context

Chasing more money in every direction rarely brings peace. Contentment is not laziness; it is knowing when enough is enough so that you can actually enjoy what you have.

Chanakya contrasts the contented with those who chase money in every direction.

7.4 Chanakya

santoṣastriṣu kartavyaḥ svadāre bhojane dhane | triṣu caiva na karttavyo'dhyayane japadānayoḥ ||

Contentment should be practised in three things: one's own spouse, food and wealth. And in three it should never be practised: study, prayer and giving.

Meaning today and context

Be satisfied with your partner, your meals and your earnings, but never think you have learned, prayed or given enough. Settle where craving harms you; keep growing where growth helps.

Chanakya says where contentment belongs and where it does not.

7.5 Chanakya

viprayorvipravahnyośca dampatyoḥ svāmibhṛtyayoḥ | antareṇa na gantavyaṃ halasya vṛṣabhasya ca ||

One should not pass between two brahmins, between a brahmin and the fire, between husband and wife, between master and servant, or between a plough and its bullock.

Meaning today and context

Read today as simple courtesy: don't barge between people who are talking, working together or in a private moment, and don't push into a couple's or a team's relationship.

A rule of traditional etiquette: do not walk between pairs who belong together.

7.6 Chanakya

pādābhyāṃ na spṛśedagniṃ guruṃ brāhmaṇameva ca | naiva gāṃ ca kumārīṃ na vṛddhaṃ na śiśuṃ tathā ||

One should not touch with the feet fire, a teacher or a brahmin, nor ever a cow, a young girl, an old person or a child.

Meaning today and context

Touching with the foot is a sign of disrespect in Indian custom. The spirit is to treat teachers, elders, children and living beings with care, and fire with caution.

Another rule of respect: what one should never touch with one's feet.

7.7 Chanakya

hastī hastasahasreṇa śatahastena vājinaḥ | śṛṅgiṇī daśahastena deśatyāgena durjanaḥ ||

Keep a thousand cubits from an elephant, a hundred from a horse, ten from a horned beast, and from a wicked person, leave the country.

Keeping distance from a harmful person is wise, but this is not a licence to shun people without cause. If you are in danger, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Some people do more damage than any wild animal. When someone is truly harmful, keeping well away is wisdom, not weakness.

A simile about keeping a safe distance from what can harm you, ending with the wicked person.

7.8 Chanakya

hastī aṃkuśamātreṇa vājī hastena tāḍyate | śṛṅgī lakuṭahastena khaḍgahastena durjanaḥ ||

An elephant is controlled by the goad alone, a horse by the hand, a horned beast by a stick in the hand, and a wicked person by a sword in the hand.

This is not a licence for violence, threats or revenge. Deal with harmful people through firm boundaries and the law; if you are in danger, call police 112 or women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Read as an old saying that some people respond only to firm limits. Today those limits are boundaries, rules and the law, never violence.

A harsh nīti image: each creature is controlled by its own instrument, and the wicked only by force.

7.9 Chanakya

tuṣyanti bhojane viprā mayūrā ghanagarjite | sādhavaḥ parasampattau khalāḥ paravipattiṣu ||

Brahmins are pleased by a meal, peacocks by the rumble of clouds, good people by others' prosperity, and the wicked by others' misfortune.

Meaning today and context

What makes you happy shows who you are. If a friend's success stings and someone's fall feels good, that is worth noticing and changing.

A list of what pleases whom, ending with the difference between the good and the wicked.

7.10 Chanakya

anulomena balinaṃ pratilomena durjanam | ātmatulyabalaṃ śatruṃ vinayena balena vā ||

Win over the strong by going along with them, the wicked by opposing them, and an enemy of equal strength by courtesy or by strength.

This is strategy for handling conflict, not a licence for manipulation or harm. If you face threats or abuse, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Not every conflict needs the same response. With the powerful, cooperation works better than a fight; with someone acting in bad faith, firmness; with an equal, try courtesy first and stand your ground if you must.

Chanakya's strategy for three kinds of opponent: the stronger, the wicked and the equal.

7.11 Chanakya

bāhuvīryaṃ balaṃ rājño brāhmaṇo brahmavitbalī | rūpa-yauvana-mādhuryaṃ strīṇāṃ balamanuttamam ||

Strength of arm is the strength of a king; the brahmin who knows Brahman is strong; beauty, youth and sweetness are the unsurpassed strength of women.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time and is not the view of this app. It must never be used to demean, distrust, judge or control women. Brahmin here should be read as one who knows, by learning and conduct, not by birth.

Meaning today and context

The point that different roles draw on different strengths still holds. But reducing a woman's strength to looks and youth is a view of its time, not a truth.

A traditional list of where each kind of person's strength lies.

7.12 Chanakya

nā'tyantaṃ saralairbhāvyaṃ gatvā paśya vanasthalīm | chidyante saralāstatra kubjāstiṣṭhanti pādapāḥ ||

Do not be too straight. Go and look at the forest: there the straight trees are cut down, while the crooked ones are left standing.

This is about not being naive, not a licence for deceit or crookedness. Honesty remains a value; just add good sense to it.

Meaning today and context

Being honest does not mean being naive. Kindness without any self-protection invites people to use you; it is fine to say no and to guard your interests.

An image from the forest: the straight trees are the ones the woodcutter fells.

7.13 Chanakya

yatrodakastatra vasanti haṃsās | tathaiva śuṣkaṃ parivarjayanti | na haṃsatulyena nareṇa bhāvyaṃ | punastyajantaḥ punarāśrayantaḥ ||

Where there is water, there the swans live, and when it dries up they abandon it. A person should not be like the swans, leaving again and returning again.

Meaning today and context

Don't be a fair-weather friend who is around in good times and gone in hard ones. Stay with people and places that gave you shelter even when the water runs low.

A verse in upajāti metre contrasting the fair-weather swan with how a person should be.

7.14 Chanakya

upārjitānāṃ vittānāṃ tyāga eva hi rakṣaṇam | taḍāgodarasaṃsthānāṃ parīsrava ivāmbhasām ||

For wealth that has been earned, giving it away is truly its protection, as the outflow is for water held in a tank.

General wisdom about generosity, not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Money that only piles up goes stale, like still water. Sharing and putting wealth to good use keeps it healthy and keeps you generous.

Chanakya compares earned wealth to water in a tank, kept fresh by letting it flow out.

7.15 Chanakya

yasyārthāstasya mitrāṇi yasyārthāstasya bāndhavāḥ | yasyārthāḥ sa pumālloke yasyārthāḥ sa ca jīvati ||

Whoever has wealth has friends; whoever has wealth has relatives; whoever has wealth is a man in the world; whoever has wealth truly lives.

A cynical observation, not a measure of anyone's worth. If financial loss leaves you feeling worthless or hopeless, please talk to someone: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This describes how the world often behaves, not how it should. It can explain why people drift away when money runs out, but your worth was never measured by your bank balance.

A cynical observation about how the world treats people with money.

7.16 Chanakya

svargasthitānāmiha jīvaloke | catvāri cihnāni vasanti dehe | dānaprasaṃgo madhurā ca vāṇī | devārcanaṃ brāhmaṇatarpaṇaṃ ca ||

Of those who come from heaven, four marks dwell in the body here in the world of the living: a habit of giving, sweet speech, worship of the gods, and honouring brahmins.

Meaning today and context

Heaven shows up in how a person lives: they give, speak kindly, have reverence, and honour the learned. These are habits anyone can build.

An upajāti verse on four signs by which those 'from heaven' are known in this world.

7.17 Chanakya

atyantakopaḥ kaṭutā ca vāṇī | daridratā ca svajaneṣu vairam | nīcaprasaṅgaḥ kulahīnasevā | cihnāni dehe narakasthitānām ||

Extreme anger, harsh speech, poverty, enmity with one's own people, keeping low company and serving the ignoble: these are marks in the body of those who come from hell.

Poverty and 'low birth' are not marks of sin or worth; that part reflects the prejudices of its time. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth. This verse reflects the caste and purity ideas of its time and must never be used to rank, shun or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Anger, harsh words, feuding with family and bad company do make life a kind of hell, and those are worth working on. Poverty and humble origins are not signs of anyone's worth.

The counterpart of 7.16: marks of those 'from hell', in upajāti metre.

7.18 Chanakya

gamyate yadi mṛgendramandiraṃ | labhyate karikapolamauktikam | jambukālayagate ca prāpyate | vatsapucchakharacarmakhaṇḍanam ||

If one goes to a lion's den, one finds a pearl from an elephant's temple; but go to a jackal's lair and one gets a calf's tail and scraps of donkey hide.

Meaning today and context

The company you seek decides what you gain. Learn from people of real calibre, even if it is harder to reach them; petty company gives petty returns.

A rathoddhatā verse on how where you go decides what you find.

7.19 Chanakya

śvānapucchamiva vyarthaṃ jīvitaṃ vidyayā vinā | na guhyagopane śaktaṃ na ca daṃśanivāraṇe ||

Life without learning is useless, like a dog's tail, which can neither cover what should be hidden nor keep off biting insects.

Harsh words about life without learning are meant to spur study, not to judge anyone. No one's life is worthless, whatever their schooling.

Meaning today and context

Learning is what lets you protect yourself and your dignity in life. It is never too late to learn a skill, read, or study something that makes you more capable.

A blunt simile urging learning: life without it is compared to a dog's tail.

7.20 Chanakya

vācā śaucaṃ ca manasaḥ śaucamindriyanigrahaḥ | sarvabhūte dayā śaucametacchaucaṃ parārthinām ||

Purity of speech, purity of mind, restraint of the senses, and compassion for all beings: this is the purity of those who seek the highest.

Meaning today and context

Being clean inside matters more than any ritual: honest words, a mind free of malice, self-control, and kindness to every living being.

Chanakya defines true purity as inner, not ritual.

7.21 Chanakya

puṣpe gandhaṃ tile tailaṃ kāṣṭhe vahniṃ payo ghṛtam | ikṣau guḍaṃ tathā dehe paśyā''tmānaṃ vivekataḥ ||

As fragrance is in a flower, oil in sesame, fire in wood, ghee in milk and jaggery in sugarcane, so see the Self in the body, through discernment.

Meaning today and context

What is most valuable is often not visible on the surface; it has to be drawn out with patience. Look past the body to the deeper self in yourself and in others.

A closing verse of the chapter: the Self is hidden in the body as essences are hidden in things.
