śrutvā dharmaṃ vijānāti śrutvā tyajati durmatim | śrutvā jñānamavāpnoti śrutvā mokṣamavāpnuyāt ||

By listening one comes to know dharma; by listening one gives up wrong thinking; by listening one gains knowledge; by listening one may attain liberation.

Meaning today and context

Most of what we know came to us by listening. Listening well, to teachers, elders and even critics, is how wrong ideas get corrected.

Chapter 6 opens with praise of listening (śravaṇa), the traditional first step of learning from a teacher.

6.2 Chanakya

pakṣiṇāṃ kākacāṇḍālaḥ paśūnāṃ caiva kukkuraḥ | munīnāṃ pāpī cāṇḍālaḥ sarvacāṇḍālanindakaḥ ||

Among birds the crow is the cāṇḍāla, among animals the dog; among sages the sinner is the cāṇḍāla; but the slanderer is the cāṇḍāla of all.

'Cāṇḍāla' was a caste label used here as an insult. It must never be used to rank, insult or exclude any community; worth is by conduct, not birth.

Meaning today and context

The one lasting point is that speaking ill of others behind their backs is among the lowest things a person can do. The caste insult in which it is put belongs to its time.

A verse that uses the caste word 'cāṇḍāla' as a term of contempt to rank the vilest of each kind, ending with the slanderer.

bhramansaṃpūjyate rājā bhramansaṃpūjyate dvijaḥ | bhramansaṃpūjyate yogī strī bhramantī vinaśyati ||

A king who travels is honoured; a brahmin who travels is honoured; a yogi who travels is honoured; but a woman who wanders is ruined.

This reflects the restrictions placed on women in its time. It is not this app's view and must never be used to stop women from travelling, studying or working, or to control them.

Meaning today and context

Travel broadens anyone who undertakes it. The verse's restriction on women belongs to its age and has no place as a rule today.

A verse praising travel for the king, the brahmin and the yogi, but condemning it for a woman, reflecting the restrictions of its time.

Meaning today and context

Money attracts people and buys a certain respect; that is how the world often behaves. Knowing this helps you tell friends who stay from those who only follow wealth.

Time ripens all beings; time destroys all creatures; time is awake while others sleep; time is hard to overcome.

Meaning today and context

Time works on everything, unseen, even while we are not paying attention. Use it well, because it is not waiting for us.

Meaning today and context

The line on husbands and wives reflects the guardianship of its time. It does not make a husband his wife's keeper, and must never be used to control a spouse; each adult is responsible for their own actions.

This describes how people respond; it is not an endorsement of bribery, flattery or manipulation. Honest dealing remains the standard.
