Chapter 5

5.1 Chanakya

gururagnirdvijātīnāṃ varṇānāṃ brāhmaṇo guruḥ | patireva guruḥ strīṇāṃ sarvasyābhyāgato guruḥ ||

Fire is the guru of the twice-born; the brahmin is the guru of the varṇas; the husband alone is the guru of women; a guest is the guru of all.

This reflects the caste and gender hierarchy of its time. It is not this app's view and must never be used to rank people by birth or to make a wife subordinate to her husband. Respect is earned by conduct, not caste or gender.

Meaning today and context

The lasting part is the last line: a guest deserves respect from everyone. The rest describes a hierarchy of its age, not how anyone should be ranked today.

A list of who is 'guru' (the one to be revered) for whom, set in the caste and gender order of its time. Only the last line, that a guest is to be honoured by all, still holds.

5.2 Chanakya

yathā caturbhiḥ kanakaṃ parīkṣyate | nigharṣaṇacchedanatāpatāḍanaiḥ | tathā caturbhiḥ puruṣaḥ parīkṣyate | tyāgena śīlena guṇena karmaṇā ||

As gold is tested in four ways, by rubbing, cutting, heating and beating, so a person is tested in four: by generosity, by character, by qualities and by actions.

Meaning today and context

Don't judge people by looks, words or status. Watch whether they share, how they behave, what they are good at, and what they actually do, especially under pressure.

A famous simile in vaṃśastha metre: as gold is tested by four trials, so a person's worth is tested by four.

5.3 Chanakya

tāvadbhayena bhetavyaṃ yāvadbhayamanāgatam | āgataṃ tu bhayaṃ vīkṣya prahartavyamaśaṃkayā ||

Fear danger only as long as it has not yet come. But once you see that danger has arrived, strike at it without hesitation.

'Strike' means tackle the problem decisively. It is not a licence for violence or revenge against any person; if you are in danger, call police 112 (women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Worry is useful only as preparation. When the problem is actually here, stop dreading it and deal with it head-on.

Advice on facing danger: be wary while it is still coming, but once it has arrived, act decisively instead of freezing.

5.4 Chanakya

ekodarasamudbhūtā ekanakṣatrajātakāḥ | na bhavanti samāḥ śīle yathā badarikaṇṭakāḥ ||

Born of the same womb, born under the same star, they are still not alike in character, like the berries and the thorns of the jujube tree.

Meaning today and context

Siblings, even twins, differ in temperament. Don't compare one child with another or expect them to be the same; know each one on their own terms.

An observation that birth does not decide character: children of the same parents, born under the same star, still turn out differently.

5.5 Chanakya

niḥspṛho nādhikārī syānnākāmo maṇḍanapriyaḥ | nā'vidagdhaḥ priyaṃbrūyātspaṣṭavaktā na vañcakaḥ ||

One without ambition would not be an official; one without desire would not love adornment; one who is not refined would not speak pleasantly; one who speaks plainly is not a deceiver.

Meaning today and context

Someone who tells you the hard truth to your face is rarely the one cheating you. Be more careful of smooth talk than of blunt honesty.

Four observations linking a trait to its natural consequence, ending in a well-known saying about plain speakers.

5.6 Chanakya

mūrkhāṇāṃ paṇḍitā dveṣyā adhanānāṃ mahādhanāḥ | varāṃganā kulastrīṇāṃ subhagānāṃ ca durbhagā ||

Fools hate the learned, the poor hate the very rich, courtesans hate women of good family, and the unfortunate hate the fortunate.

The pairing of 'courtesans' and 'women of good family' reflects the social prejudices of its time and must never be used to judge or demean any woman.

Meaning today and context

Resentment often grows from comparison: we dislike in others what we feel we lack. Noticing this in ourselves is the first step to letting it go.

An observation on envy: people resent those who have what they lack. Two of its examples reflect the social categories of its time.

5.7 Chanakya

ālasyopagatā vidyā parahastagataṃ dhanam | alpabījaṃ hataṃ kṣetraṃ hataṃ sainyamanāyakam ||

Learning neglected through laziness is lost; wealth in another's hands is lost; a field sown with too little seed is lost; an army without a leader is lost.

Meaning today and context

Skills fade if you stop practising, money you can't access isn't really yours, half-hearted investment yields little, and a team without direction falls apart.

Four things that are as good as lost: neglected learning, money held by others, a field under-sown, and an army without a leader.

5.8 Chanakya

abhyāsāddhāryate vidyā kulaṃ śīlena dhāryate | guṇena jñāyate tvāryaḥ kopo netreṇa gamyate ||

Learning is retained by practice; family honour is upheld by good conduct; a noble person is known by their qualities; anger is seen in the eyes.

Meaning today and context

Revision keeps knowledge alive; a family's name rests on how its members behave, not on its lineage; and character shows in what we do.

Four maxims on how things are kept or known: learning by practice, family honour by conduct, nobility by qualities, anger by the eyes.

5.9 Chanakya

vittena rakṣyate dharmo vidyā yogena rakṣyate | mṛdunā rakṣyate bhūpaḥ satstriyā rakṣyate gṛham ||

Dharma is protected by wealth, learning by application, a king by gentleness, and a home by a good woman.

Meaning today and context

Good intentions need means, knowledge needs use, authority needs gentleness, and a home needs someone who cares for it. Today that care belongs to every member of the household.

Four things and what protects each, addressed to the householder and the king.

5.10 Chanakya

anyathā vedapāṇḍityaṃ śāstramācāramanyathā | anyathā vadatā śāṃtaṃ lokāḥ kliśyanti cā'nyathā ||

Those who make Vedic learning into something other, and scripture and right conduct into something other, and speak of the peaceful [path] otherwise, such people suffer in vain.

Meaning today and context

Twisting teachings to suit ourselves, or saying one thing and living another, brings only trouble. Learn a tradition honestly before speaking for it.

A terse, obscure verse against those who misrepresent sacred learning and right conduct. It is read in more than one way; the rendering below is one plain reading.

5.11 Chanakya

dāridryanāśanaṃ dānaṃ śīlaṃ durgatināśanam | ajñānanāśinī prajñā bhāvanā bhayanāśinī ||

Giving destroys poverty; good conduct destroys misfortune; wisdom destroys ignorance; reflection destroys fear.

This is ethical guidance, not financial advice. Never give beyond your means, and be wary of anyone who promises that a donation will make you rich.

Meaning today and context

Generosity opens doors and builds goodwill, decent conduct keeps us out of trouble, understanding clears confusion, and calm reflection loosens fear.

Four remedies, each paired with what it destroys.

5.12 Chanakya

nāsti kāmasamo vyādhirnāsti mohasamo ripuḥ | nāsti kopasamo vahnirnāsti jñānātparaṃ sukham ||

There is no disease like desire, no enemy like delusion, no fire like anger, and no happiness beyond knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Our worst troubles are often inside us: craving that never ends, confusion about what matters, and anger that burns us first. Understanding is the lasting joy.

Four superlatives on the inner enemies and on knowledge.

5.13 Chanakya

janmamṛtyuṃ hi yātyeko bhunaktyekaṃ śubhāśubham | narakeṣu patatyeka eko yāti parāṃ gatim ||

Alone one goes through birth and death; alone one experiences good and bad results; alone one falls into hell; alone one reaches the highest state.

Meaning today and context

No one can live your life, make your choices or take responsibility for them on your behalf. That is not a call to isolation; it is a call to own your path.

A reflection on each person's sole responsibility for their own path.

5.14 Chanakya

tṛṇaṃ brahmavidaḥ svargastṛṇaṃ śūrasya jīvitam | jitākṣasya tṛṇaṃ nārī niḥspṛhasya tṛṇaṃ jagat ||

Heaven is like straw to the knower of Brahman; life is like straw to the brave; a woman is like straw to one who has conquered his senses; the world is like straw to one without desire.

'A woman is like straw' speaks of a man's mastery of his own desire, in the idiom of its time; it must never be used to belittle women. 'Life is straw to the brave' is about courage, never about one's own life; if you feel your life does not matter, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

What we have truly outgrown no longer controls us. Freedom from craving, not contempt for anything, is the point.

A verse on how things lose their pull for one who has mastered them: the knower, the brave, the self-controlled, the desireless.

5.15 Chanakya

vidyā mitraṃ pravāseṣu bhāryā mitraṃ gṛheṣu ca | vyādhitasyauṣadhaṃ mitraṃ dharmo mitraṃ mṛtasya ca ||

Learning is a friend when abroad; a wife is a friend at home; medicine is the friend of the sick; and dharma is the friend of the dead.

Meaning today and context

Each stage of life has its true support: skills in a strange place, a partner at home, treatment when ill, and the good we have done at the end.

Four friends for four situations of life, and of what comes after.

5.16 Chanakya

vṛthā vṛṣṭissamudreṣu vṛthā tṛpteṣu bhojanam | vṛthā dānaṃ dhanāḍhyeṣu vṛthā dīpo divā'pi ca ||

Rain over the sea is wasted; food for the full is wasted; a gift to the wealthy is wasted; a lamp by day is wasted.

Meaning today and context

Give where it is needed, not where it impresses. Help, time and money count most where there is real lack.

Four examples of giving where it is not needed.

5.17 Chanakya

nāsti meghasamaṃ toyaṃ nāsti cātmasamaṃ balam | nāsti cakṣuḥsamaṃ tejo nāsti dhānyasamaṃ priyam ||

There is no water like rain-water, no strength like one's own strength, no light like the eye, and nothing so dear as grain.

Meaning today and context

The most valuable things are the basic ones: food, sight, clean water, and the strength we build in ourselves rather than borrow from others.

Four comparisons naming the best of each kind.

5.18 Chanakya

adhanā dhanamicchanti vācaṃ caiva catuṣpadāḥ | mānavāḥ svargamicchanti mokṣamicchantidevatāḥ ||

The poor want wealth, animals want speech, humans want heaven, and the gods want liberation.

Meaning today and context

Wanting more is universal; even the gods are not satisfied. Seeing this can help us hold our wants more lightly and ask what would truly end the wanting.

An observation that every being longs for what lies just beyond its state.

5.19 Chanakya

satyena dhāryate pṛthvī satyena tapate raviḥ | satyena vāti vāyuśca sarvaṃ satye pratiṣṭhitam ||

By truth the earth is upheld; by truth the sun shines; by truth the wind blows; everything rests on truth.

Meaning today and context

Families, friendships, businesses and societies all rest on people keeping their word. When truth goes, everything built on it starts to shake.

A praise of truth as the order holding up the world.

5.20 Chanakya

calā lakṣmīścalāḥ prāṇāścale jīvitamandire | calā'cale ca saṃsāre dharma eko hi niścalaḥ ||

Fortune is fickle, the life-breaths are fickle, fickle is this dwelling of life; in this world of moving and unmoving things, dharma alone is steady.

Meaning today and context

Money, health and life itself can change overnight. What we can rely on is doing the right thing, which no turn of fortune can take away.

A reflection on impermanence and the one steady thing.

5.21 Chanakya

narāṇāṃ nāpito dhūrtaḥ pakṣiṇāṃ caiva vāyasaḥ | catuṣpadāṃ śṛgālastu strīṇāṃ dhūrtā ca mālinī ||

Among men the barber is the cunning one, among birds the crow, among four-footed beasts the jackal, and among women the flower-seller.

This reflects occupational and gender stereotypes of its time. It must never be used to distrust, mock or demean anyone because of their work, community or gender.

Meaning today and context

This is a stereotype of its age about certain trades and women. It is not a guide to anyone's character.

A list of who was thought cunning among each kind, using occupational and gender stereotypes of its time.

5.22 Chanakya

janitā copanetā ca yastu vidyāṃ prayacchati | annadātā bhayatrātā pañcaite pitaraḥ smṛtāḥ ||

The one who begets, the one who performs the sacred-thread initiation, the one who gives learning, the one who gives food, and the one who protects from fear: these five are called fathers.

Meaning today and context

Many people father us in the wider sense: teachers, mentors, those who fed us or kept us safe. They deserve the gratitude and respect we give a parent.

A list of five who deserve a father's honour.

5.23 Chanakya

rājapatnī guroḥ patnī mitrapatnī tathaiva ca | patnīmātā svamātā ca pañcaitā mātaraḥ smṛtāḥ ||

The king's wife, the teacher's wife, a friend's wife, one's wife's mother and one's own mother: these five are considered mothers.

Meaning today and context

Some relationships call for respect and clear boundaries. Treating a friend's or mentor's spouse with a parent's dignity protects trust on every side.

A list of five women to be regarded as mothers, setting bounds of respect.
