Prakaraṇa 10

10.1 Shankaracharya

dṛśisvarūpaṃ gaganopamaṃ paraṃ sakṛdvibhātaṃ tvajamekamakṣaram | alepakaṃ sarvagataṃ yadadvayaṃ tadeva cāhaṃ satataṃ vimukta om ||

That which is the very nature of seeing, like the sky, supreme, shining once and for all, unborn, one, imperishable, untainted, all-pervading, without a second: that indeed am I, forever free. Om.

Meaning today and context

Seeing itself, as distinct from what is seen, is never born and never hurt. The verse is a statement to dwell on rather than an argument.

In the chapter on the nature of seeing, Shankaracharya speaks as the Self, declaring himself to be pure seeing, like the sky.

10.2 Shankaracharya

dṛśistu śuddho'hamavikriyātmako na me'sti kaścidviṣayaḥ svabhāvataḥ | purastiraścordhvamadhaśca sarvataḥ supūrṇabhūmā tvaja ātmani sthitaḥ ||

I am seeing itself, pure, changeless by nature; by nature no object belongs to me. In front, across, above, below, everywhere, I am the fullness of the infinite, unborn, abiding in myself.

Meaning today and context

Whatever you look at, the looking is complete in itself and lacks nothing. In meditation, resting in that fullness can ease the feeling of always needing more.

The Self continues: as pure seeing it is changeless and has no object of its own; it is full in every direction.

10.3 Shankaracharya

ajo'maraścaiva tathājaro'mṛtaḥ svayaṃprabhaḥ sarvagato'hamadvayaḥ | na kāraṇaṃ kāryamatīva nirmalaḥ sadaiva tṛptaśca tato vimukta om ||

Unborn, undying, likewise unageing, immortal, self-luminous, all-pervading, without a second am I; neither cause nor effect, utterly stainless, always content, and therefore free. Om.

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die or to neglect health. If you are thinking about death or ending your life, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Ageing and death belong to the body; the awareness that has watched you grow from a child has not aged. Many find that this eases the fear of getting old.

The Self declares itself beyond birth, death and causation, and always content.

10.4 Shankaracharya

suṣuptajāgratsvapataśca darśanaṃ na me'sti kiṃcitsvamiveha mohanam | svataśca teṣāṃ parato'pyasattvatasturīya evāsmi sadā dṛgadvayaḥ ||

No seeing of deep sleep, waking or dream belongs to me in any way; it is a delusion here, like a dream. Since these [states] have no reality either by themselves or through another, I am always the Fourth, non-dual seeing.

Meaning today and context

Your days pass through waking, dreaming and sleep, but something is present through all three. The tradition calls it the Fourth; it is not another state but what the states appear in.

The Self: waking, dream and deep sleep do not belong to it; they are delusion like a dream, and it is always the Fourth (turīya).

10.5 Shankaracharya

śarīrabuddhīndriyaduḥkhasaṃtatirna me na cāhaṃ mama nirvikārataḥ | asattvahetośca tathaiva saṃtaterasattvamasyāḥ svapato hi dṛśyavat ||

The continuous stream of body, intellect, senses and pain is not mine, nor am I its, because I am changeless. And since its cause is unreal, the stream is unreal, like what is seen by one who is dreaming.

Calling pain 'unreal' is about the Self, not a reason to ignore pain or skip medical or mental health care. If suffering feels unbearable, please seek help; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Pain is real as experience, but you are more than the pain: you are what notices it. Some people living with chronic pain or illness find this gives them a little room around the hurt, alongside treatment.

The Self: the stream of body, mind, senses and pain is not its own, nor does it belong to that stream.

10.6 Shankaracharya

idaṃ tu satyaṃ mama nāsti vikriyā vikāraheturna hi me'dvayatvataḥ | na puṇyapāpe na ca mokṣabandhane na cāsti varṇāśramatāśarīrataḥ ||

This is the truth: there is no change in me, nor any cause of change, since I am without a second. Neither merit nor sin, neither liberation nor bondage, nor caste or stage of life belong to me, since I am bodiless.

This is about the Self, not a licence to ignore right and wrong in daily life; the same text (US 11.8) says those who claim to be Brahman while acting as doers are ruined.

Meaning today and context

Caste, life stage and social labels belong to the body and society, not to the Self; no one's true worth is set by birth. The verse speaks of the Self, while ordinary life still asks us to act rightly.

The Self: it has no change and no cause of change; merit and sin, bondage and liberation, caste and stage of life do not belong to it, since it has no body.

10.7 Shankaracharya

anādito nirguṇato na karma me phalaṃ ca tasmātparamo'hamadvayaḥ | yathā nabhaḥ sarvagataṃ na lipyate tathā hyahaṃ dehagato'pi sūkṣmataḥ ||

Because I am beginningless and without qualities, I have no action and no fruit; therefore I am the Supreme, without a second. As space, though all-pervading, is not tainted, so I, though in the body, am not tainted, because I am subtle.

Being 'beyond action' describes the Self; it is not advice to give up your work, family duties or care for others. For most people it means acting without being bound by the outcome.

Meaning today and context

Space fills a room without being soiled by what happens in it. The verse says your deepest self is like that: present in everything you do, untouched by it.

The Self: being beginningless and without qualities, it has no action or fruit; like space, it is in the body yet untouched.

10.8 Shankaracharya

sadā ca bhūteṣu samo'hamīśvaraḥ kṣarākṣarābhyāṃ paramo hyathottamaḥ | parātmatattvaśca tathādvayo'pi sanviparyayeṇābhivṛtastvavidyayā ||

I am always the same in all beings, the Lord, beyond both the perishable and the imperishable, the highest. Though I am the supreme Self and non-dual, I am covered over by ignorance, [appearing] as the reverse.

Meaning today and context

We often see ourselves as the opposite of what we are: small, separate, lacking. The verse calls that a covering of ignorance, not the truth about you.

The Self: it is the same in all, beyond perishable and imperishable, yet covered by ignorance it appears as its opposite.

10.9 Shankaracharya

avidyayā bhāvanayā ca karmabhirvivikta ātmāvyavadhiḥ sunirmalaḥ | dṛgādiśaktipracito'hamadvayaḥ sthitaḥ svarūpe gaganaṃ yathācalam ||

Separate from ignorance, from mental impressions and from actions, the Self is without any gap, wholly pure. I am full of the powers of seeing and the rest, without a second, abiding in my own nature, unmoving like the sky.

Meaning today and context

Habits of mind and the weight of past actions are real forces, but they move in the mind, not in the awareness that watches. Knowing this helps you meet old patterns without despair.

The Self: separate from ignorance, mental impressions and actions, it rests in its own nature, unmoving as the sky.

10.10 Shankaracharya

'One whose vision of the Self is the firm conviction "I am the supreme Brahman" is not born again': so says the scripture. When the seed is absent, no fruit is produced; so, delusion being gone, there is no birth.

Meaning today and context

Delusion is pictured as a seed. Remove the seed and what grows from it stops. For daily life this suggests looking at the root belief behind a cycle rather than only at its fruits.

Shankaracharya cites scripture: one firmly convinced 'I am the supreme Brahman' is not born again; with the seed of delusion gone, there is no birth.

10.11 Shankaracharya

mamedamitthaṃ ca tavāda īdṛśaṃ tathāhamevaṃ na paro'pi cānyathā | vimūḍhataivāsya janasya kalpanā sadā same brahmaṇi vādvaye śive ||

'This is mine, and so; that is yours, and such; I am like this, and the other is otherwise': this is only the imagining of bewildered people about Brahman, which is always the same, non-dual and auspicious.

Meaning today and context

So many quarrels at home and work come from 'mine versus yours'. The verse does not erase practical boundaries, but it reminds you how much of the heat in such fights is a story of separateness.

Shankaracharya: notions of 'this is mine, that is yours, I am like this, you are otherwise' are mere imagination about the one, even Brahman.

10.12 Shankaracharya

yadadvayaṃ jñānamatīva nirmalaṃ mahātmanāṃ tatra na śokamohatā | tayorabhāve na hi karma janma vā bhavedayaṃ vedavidāṃ viniścayaḥ ||

In the non-dual, utterly pure knowledge of the great-souled, there is no grief or delusion. When those two are absent, there is neither action nor birth: this is the settled conviction of the knowers of the Veda.

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and deserves time and care; this verse does not dismiss mourning. If grief feels unbearable, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Grief and confusion feed each other. Clear understanding of who you are does not erase loss, but it can keep grief from hardening into a lasting confusion about yourself.

Shankaracharya: in the non-dual knowledge of the great there is no grief or delusion, and without these there is no action or birth.

10.13 Shankaracharya

suṣuptavajjāgrati yo na paśyati dvayaṃ tu paśyannapi cādvayatvataḥ | tathā ca kurvannapi niṣkriyaśca yaḥ sa ātmavinnānya itīha niścayaḥ ||

One who, while awake, does not see duality, as in deep sleep, though he does see it, because of non-duality; and who likewise, though acting, is actionless: he alone knows the Self, no one else. This is the settled conclusion here.

Meaning today and context

The knower is not someone who stops seeing differences or stops working. They see and act fully, but are not split or driven inside. That is a picture of calm engagement, not withdrawal.

Shankaracharya gives the mark of the knower of the Self: seeing duality yet not taken in by it, acting yet actionless.

10.14 Shankaracharya

itīdamuktaṃ paramārthadarśanaṃ mayā hi vedāntaviniścitaṃ param | vimucyate'sminyadi niścito bhavenna lipyate vyomavadeva karmabhiḥ ||

Thus I have stated this vision of the highest truth, the supreme [teaching] settled by Vedānta. If one becomes firmly established in it, one is freed, and, like space, is not tainted by actions.

Meaning today and context

Understanding has to become settled conviction to change a life. The verse asks for steadiness in the insight, not just agreement with it.

Shankaracharya concludes the chapter: he has stated the vision of the highest truth settled by Vedānta; one firm in it is freed and untainted by actions.
