Prakaraṇa 11

11.1 Shankaracharya

īkṣitṛtvaṃ svataḥsiddhaṃ jantūnāṃ ca tato'nyatā | ajñānādityato'nyatvaṃ sadasīti nivartyate ||

Being the seer is self-established; that living beings [seem] other than it is due to ignorance. Hence this otherness is removed by '[That which is] Being, you are'.

Meaning today and context

You never have to prove that you are aware; it is the one thing beyond doubt. What needs correcting is only the belief that you are something smaller than that.

Opening the chapter on the witness, Shankaracharya says the Self's being the seer is self-evident; the sense of being something other comes from ignorance and is removed by the teaching 'you are Being'.

11.2 Shankaracharya

etāvaddhyamṛtatvaṃ na kiṃcidanyatsahāyakam | jñānasyeti bruvacchāstraṃ saliṅgaṃ karma bādhate ||

Scripture, saying 'This much indeed is immortality' and that knowledge needs no other helper, rules out [ritual] action together with its outward marks.

Meaning today and context

Rituals and practices can prepare the mind, but the text holds that freedom itself comes from understanding, not from doing more.

Against ritualists who hold that knowledge must be combined with ritual action, Shankaracharya cites the Upanishad: knowledge alone is immortality.

11.3 Shankaracharya

sarveṣāṃ manaso vṛttamaviśeṣeṇa paśyataḥ | tasya me nirvikārasya viśeṣaḥ syātkathaṃcana ||

I see the activity of the minds of all without distinction. How could any distinction ever belong to me, who am changeless?

Meaning today and context

Moods rise and fall, good days and bad. The awareness watching them is the same on every day. You can rest as that witness instead of riding every wave.

Shankaracharya: the Self sees the mind's activity in all alike, so no change or particular trait can belong to it.

11.4 Shankaracharya

manovṛttaṃ manaścaiva svapnavajjāgratīkṣituḥ | saṃprasāde dvayāsattvāccinmātraḥ sarvago'dvayaḥ ||

The mind and the mind's activity are like a dream to the one who sees, even in waking. In deep serenity (deep sleep), since duality is absent, [I am] consciousness alone, all-pervading, without a second.

Meaning today and context

Seen from the witness, even waking thoughts have the quality of a dream: vivid but passing. That can take some force out of thoughts that feel urgent.

Shankaracharya: to the seer, the mind and its activity are like a dream even while awake; in deep sleep, with duality absent, only consciousness remains.

11.5 Shankaracharya

svapnaḥ satyo yathābodhāddehātmatvaṃ tathaiva ca | pratyakṣādeḥ pramāṇatvaṃ jāgratsyādātmavedanāt ||

As a dream is real until one wakes, so too taking the body as oneself, and the validity of perception and the other means of knowledge, hold in waking until the Self is known.

Meaning today and context

This verse is balanced: everyday knowledge is valid in everyday life. Look both ways crossing the road; the deeper truth does not cancel ordinary sense.

Shankaracharya: as a dream is real until waking, so taking the body as the self, and treating perception and the other means of knowing as valid, holds in waking until the Self is known.

11.6 Shankaracharya

vyomavatsarvabhūtastho bhūtadoṣairvivarjitaḥ | sākṣī cetāguṇaḥ śuddho brahmaivāsmīti kevalaḥ ||

Like space, I dwell in all beings and am free from the faults of beings: the witness, the knower, without qualities, pure. I am Brahman alone.

Meaning today and context

Whatever has happened to you or through you, the witnessing awareness stays clear. Recalling this can steady you when you feel defined by your faults.

Shankaracharya: like space, the Self is in all beings yet free of their faults; it is the witness, pure, and Brahman alone.

11.7 Shankaracharya

nāmarūpakriyābhyo'nyo nityamuktasvarūpavān | ahamātmā paraṃ brahma cinmātro'haṃ sadādvayaḥ ||

Other than name, form and action, by nature ever free, I am the Self, the supreme Brahman; I am consciousness alone, always without a second.

Meaning today and context

Your name, your appearance and what you do are how the world knows you. The verse says there is a you before all three, already free.

Shankaracharya: the Self is other than name, form and action, ever free by nature.

11.8 Shankaracharya

ahaṃ brahmāsmi kartā ca bhoktā cāsmīti ye viduḥ | te naṣṭā jñānakarmabhyāṃ nāstikāḥ syurna saṃśayaḥ ||

Those who hold 'I am Brahman, and I am also the doer and the enjoyer' are ruined, fallen from both knowledge and action. They should be counted as unbelievers, no doubt.

Meaning today and context

A warning against spiritual ego: using big words like 'I am Brahman' while still acting from ego is worse than plain honesty. Real understanding shows as humility, not as licence.

Shankaracharya criticises those who say 'I am Brahman' while still holding 'I am the doer and enjoyer': they lose both knowledge and right action.

11.9 Shankaracharya

dharmādharmaphalairyoga iṣṭo'dṛṣṭo yathātmanaḥ | śāstrādbrahmatvamapyasya mokṣo jñānāttatheṣyatām ||

Just as the Self's connection with the fruits of merit and demerit, though unseen, is accepted [on the authority of scripture], so let its being Brahman, and liberation through knowledge, be accepted from scripture too.

Meaning today and context

If you trust the tradition's word about karma, the verse says, trust it also when it says you are more than a doer collecting results.

Shankaracharya argues from scripture: as the Self's link with the fruits of merit and demerit is accepted on scripture's word, so should its being Brahman, and liberation through knowledge.

11.10 Shankaracharya

yā māhārajanādyāstā vāsanāḥ svapnadarśibhiḥ | anubhūyanta eveha tato'nyaḥ kevalo dṛśiḥ ||

The impressions [seen in dream], such as [a cloth] dyed with safflower, are experienced here by those who see dreams. Therefore the seer, alone, is other than them.

Meaning today and context

In a dream you see vivid colours and scenes, yet you are not those scenes. The same holds for the images your mind throws up when awake.

Shankaracharya, recalling the Upanishad's dream images (such as a cloth dyed with safflower), argues that the seer of dreams is other than the dream impressions.

11.11 Shankaracharya

kośādiva viniṣkṛṣṭaḥ kāryakāraṇavarjitaḥ | yathāsirdṛśyate svapne tadvadboddhā svayaṃprabhaḥ ||

Like a sword drawn out of its sheath, free from body and organs, the knower is seen in dream to be self-luminous.

Meaning today and context

In dreams there is no physical light, yet everything is seen. Something in you lights experience on its own; the body is not its source.

Shankaracharya: in dream the knower is seen free of body and senses, like a sword drawn from its sheath, and shines by its own light.

11.12 Shankaracharya

āpeṣātpratibuddhasya jñasya svābhāvikaṃ padam | uktaṃ netyādivākyena kalpitasyāpanetṛṇā ||

The natural state of the knower who has awakened, [reached] by grinding away [all that is superimposed], is declared by the sentence 'not, not', which removes what has been imagined.

Meaning today and context

'Not this, not this' is a way of finding yourself by subtraction: whatever you can point to, set it aside, and what cannot be set aside is you.

Shankaracharya: the natural state of the awakened knower, once all that was superimposed is ground away, is taught by the Upanishadic 'not, not' (neti neti), which removes what is imagined.

11.13 Shankaracharya

mahārājādayo lokā mayi yadvatprakalpitāḥ | svapne tadvaddvayaṃ vidyādrūpaṃ vāsanayā saha ||

As worlds of great kings and the like are imagined in me in dream, so one should know that duality, form together with impressions, [is imagined in waking].

Meaning today and context

In a dream you can be a king and lose a kingdom without anything really changing. The verse invites a lighter hold on waking fortunes too, while still acting sensibly in them.

Shankaracharya: just as kingdoms and worlds are imagined in oneself in dream, so the duality of waking, with its forms and impressions, should be known as imagined.

11.14 Shankaracharya

dehaliṅgātmanā kāryā vāsanārūpiṇā kriyā | netinetyātmarūpatvānna me kāryā kriyā kvacit ||

Action is to be done by the one who takes the body and subtle body as self, which consists of impressions. Since my nature is 'not, not', there is no action anywhere for me to do.

Being 'beyond action' describes the Self; it is not advice to give up your work, family duties or care for others. For most people it means acting without being bound by the outcome.

Meaning today and context

Doing belongs to the body-mind; the Self is not a doer. Seeing this can free action from the anxious sense that your worth depends on the result.

Shankaracharya: action belongs to one who identifies with the body and subtle body, made of impressions; the Self, being 'not, not', has nothing to do.

11.15 Shankaracharya

na tato'mṛtatāśāsti karmaṇo'jñānahetutaḥ | mokṣasya jñānahetutvānna tadanyadapekṣate ||

So there is no hope of immortality from action, since action has ignorance as its cause. Since liberation has knowledge as its cause, it depends on nothing else.

Being 'beyond action' describes the Self; it is not advice to give up your work, family duties or care for others. For most people it means acting without being bound by the outcome.

Meaning today and context

No amount of doing makes you what you already are. Effort can clear the way, but freedom is recognised, not manufactured.

Shankaracharya: since action springs from ignorance, it cannot give immortality; liberation comes from knowledge and depends on nothing else.

11.16 Shankaracharya

amṛtaṃ cābhayaṃ nārtaṃ netītyātmā priyo mama | viparītamato'nyadyattyajettatsakriyaṃ tataḥ ||

Immortal, fearless, free from affliction, 'not, not': such is the Self, dear to me. Whatever else there is, is the opposite; so one should give it up, together with action.

'Give up everything else, with action' is about inner detachment; it is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

The one thing that is never in danger is your own awareness, and it is the dearest thing you have. Letting go here means inner letting go: not leaning your whole sense of safety on what can be lost.

Shankaracharya closes the chapter: the Self is immortal, fearless, free from affliction, 'not, not', and dear; everything else is its opposite and should be given up along with action.
