Prakaraṇa 12

12.1 Shankaracharya

prakāśasthaṃ yathā dehaṃ sālokamabhimanyate | draṣṭrābhāsaṃ tathā cittaṃ draṣṭāhamiti manyate ||

Just as a person takes his body, standing in the light, to be [itself] luminous, so the mind, which carries a reflection of the seer, thinks, 'I am the seer.'

Meaning today and context

Our thoughts seem to be 'me' because awareness shines through them, the way a lit object seems to glow by itself. Noticing this borrowed light is the first step to not being swallowed by every thought.

Shankaracharya opens the chapter on 'the light' with an analogy: the mind, lit by consciousness, takes itself to be the seer.

12.2 Shankaracharya

Whatever is seen in the world, the deluded person takes himself to be one with it; and so he does not find the Self.

Meaning today and context

We become our job title, our body, our latest failure or our mood. Every one of these is something we observe; the observer is never found by grabbing one more thing to be.

Shankaracharya names the root error: identifying oneself with whatever is perceived.

12.3 Shankaracharya

daśamasya navātmatvapratipattivadātmanaḥ | dṛśyeṣu tadvadevāyaṃ mūḍho loko na cānyathā ||

Just as [the tenth man] counted only nine and took himself to be [missing], so do deluded people take the Self to be among the things seen, and not otherwise.

Meaning today and context

The one we are looking for is the one doing the looking. Searching for the Self as an object is like the counter who forgets to count himself.

Shankaracharya uses the well-known 'tenth man' story: ten men cross a river, each counts nine and forgets himself.

12.4 Shankaracharya

tvaṃ kuru tvaṃ tadeveti pratyayāvekakālikau | ekanīḍau kathaṃ syātāṃ viruddhau nyāyato vada ||

'You must do [this]' and 'You are That': how can these two notions, held at the same moment in the same place, be [both true] when they contradict each other? Tell me, by reasoning.

This argues that liberation does not come from action; it is not advice to give up work, family duties or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Knowing who you are is not one more task on the list. The verse separates the path of doing from the recognition of what you already are.

Against the ritualist (Mīmāṃsā) view that knowledge and action can be combined, Shankaracharya points out that two contradictory ideas cannot hold together.

12.5 Shankaracharya

dehābhimānino duḥkhaṃ nādehasya svabhāvataḥ | svāpavattatprahāṇāya tattvamityucyate dṛśeḥ ||

Suffering belongs to one who identifies with the body; by its own nature it does not belong to the bodiless [Self], as [is seen] in deep sleep. To remove that [identification], 'You are That' is said of the seer.

This is about identity, not a reason to ignore physical or mental pain. Please keep seeing your doctor; if you are in crisis, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

In deep sleep, worries and pain fall away because we are not holding on to 'my body, my life'. The teaching invites a calmer sense of self beneath what hurts; it does not deny the pain or the need to treat it.

Shankaracharya explains why the scripture teaches 'You are That': to remove the identification with the body that brings suffering.

12.6 Shankaracharya

dṛśeśchāyā yadārūḍhā mukhacchāyeva darśane | paśyaṃstaṃ pratyayaṃ yogī dṛṣṭa ātmeti manyate ||

When the reflection of the seer has risen in [the mind], like the reflection of a face in a mirror, the yogi who sees that mental image thinks, 'I have seen the Self.'

Meaning today and context

Even a beautiful inner experience is still something seen. The verse cautions against clinging to special states in meditation as if they were the goal.

Shankaracharya warns meditators: a reflection of consciousness in the mind is not the Self itself.

12.7 Shankaracharya

taṃ ca mūḍhaṃ ca yadyanyaṃ pratyayaṃ vetti no dṛśeḥ | sa eva yogināṃ śreṣṭho netaraḥ syānna saṃśayaḥ ||

If he knows that [image], the deluded [notion] and any other notion as not belonging to the seer, he alone is the best of yogis, and no other; of this there is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

Good moods and bad moods, insight and confusion, all come and go before you. Seeing them all as passing, without calling any of them 'me', is the real practice.

Continuing, Shankaracharya says who the true yogi is: one who knows every mental state as other than the seer.

12.8 Shankaracharya

Since it is the knower of knowing that is meant by 'you' [in 'You are That'], that alone would be his [real] experience; any experience other than that is false.

Meaning today and context

Realisation is not a new event that happens to you; it is recognising the knowing that is present in every event.

Shankaracharya defines true experience: being the knower of all knowing.

12.9 Shankaracharya

dṛśirūpe sadā nitye darśanādarśane mayi | kathaṃ syātāṃ tato nānya iṣyate'nubhavastataḥ ||

In me, whose nature is seeing, always eternal, how could there be seeing and not-seeing? Therefore no experience other than that is accepted.

Meaning today and context

Awareness is not switched on and off like a lamp; it is there even when you notice nothing in particular.

Shankaracharya speaks as the Self: seeing and not-seeing cannot apply to pure seeing.

12.10 Shankaracharya

yatsthastāpo raverdehe dṛśeḥ sa viṣayo yathā | sattvasthastadvadeveha dṛśeḥ sa viṣayastathā ||

Just as the sun's heat that is in the body is an object of seeing, so in the same way whatever is in the mind (sattva) here is an object of seeing.

Meaning today and context

You feel the sun's heat on your skin without becoming the sun. In the same way you can know your sadness or anxiety without being nothing but that sadness or anxiety.

With an analogy of the sun's heat felt in the body, Shankaracharya shows that pain in the mind is an object of the seer, not the seer.

12.11 Shankaracharya

pratiṣiddhedamaṃśo jñaḥ khamivaikaraso'dvayaḥ | nityamuktastathā śuddhaḥ so'haṃ brahmāsmi kevalaḥ ||

The knower, from whom every 'this' has been negated, homogeneous like space, without a second, ever free and pure: I am that Brahman, alone.

Meaning today and context

Take away every label, role, mood and memory, and what is left is not nothing but the open awareness in which they appeared. That, says the verse, is what you are.

Shankaracharya states the conclusion in the first person: what remains when every 'this' is negated.

12.12 Shankaracharya

vijñāturnaiva vijñātā paro'nyaḥ saṃbhavatyataḥ | vijñātāhaṃ paro muktaḥ sarvabhūteṣu sarvadā ||

There can be no other, higher knower of the knower; therefore I am the supreme knower, free, in all beings, always.

Meaning today and context

The awareness in you is the same awareness in everyone. That is a quiet ground for respect and kinship with others.

Shankaracharya argues that the knower cannot itself be known by another knower.

12.13 Shankaracharya

One who knows that the Self's seeing never fails and that the Self is not an agent, and who has let go even of [the notion] 'I am a knower of Brahman': he knows the Self, and no other.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual pride is one more identity. Real understanding does not need to announce itself or feel superior.

Shankaracharya says who truly knows the Self, adding that even the idea 'I am a knower of Brahman' must be dropped.

12.14 Shankaracharya

jñātaivāhamavijñeyaḥ śuddho muktaḥ sadetyapi | vivekī pratyayo buddherdṛśyatvānnāśavattvataḥ ||

'I am only the knower, unknowable, pure, ever free': even this is a discriminating notion of the intellect; being an object seen, it is perishable.

Meaning today and context

Repeating the right words is useful, but the words are not the reality. Hold the teaching lightly, as a pointer.

Shankaracharya notes that even a correct thought about the Self is still a thought, and so passes.

12.15 Shankaracharya

aluptā tvātmano dṛṣṭirnotpādyā kārakairyataḥ | dṛśyayā cānyayā dṛṣṭyā janyatāsyāḥ prakalpitā ||

The seeing of the Self never fails, because it cannot be produced by the factors of action; it is imagined to be produced [only] because of the other seeing, the one that is itself seen.

Meaning today and context

Perceptions come and go with the eyes and the mind; awareness itself is not manufactured by them. You do not have to create it, only stop overlooking it.

Shankaracharya argues that the Self's seeing is not produced by any cause; only the mind's seeing is.

12.16 Shankaracharya

dehātmabuddhyapekṣatvādātmanaḥ kartṛtā mṛṣā | naiva kiṃcitkaromīti satyā buddhiḥ pramāṇajā ||

The Self's agency is false, because it depends on the idea that the body is the Self. 'I do nothing at all' is the true understanding, born of valid knowledge.

'I do nothing' is about the Self, not an excuse for harm or for avoiding work and duties; one remains responsible for what one does.

Meaning today and context

Much of our stress comes from 'I must make everything happen'. Seeing that the deepest you is not the anxious doer can let you act with less strain, while still taking full responsibility for what your body and mind do.

Shankaracharya argues that the Self's doership is false, since it rests on taking the body to be the Self.

12.17 Shankaracharya

kartṛtvaṃ kārakāpekṣamakartṛtvaṃ svabhāvataḥ | kartā bhokteti vijñānaṃ mṛṣaiveti suniścitam ||

Agency depends on the factors of action; non-agency is [the Self's] own nature. The knowledge 'I am a doer, an enjoyer' is certainly false: this is well established.

Not a way to disown one's actions: in daily life we still own our choices and repair harm we cause.

Meaning today and context

Action needs a body, tools and circumstances; awareness needs none of them. Remembering this can loosen the grip of pride in success and self-blame in failure.

Shankaracharya continues the argument against the Self being a doer or enjoyer.

12.18 Shankaracharya

evaṃ śāstrānumānābhyāṃ svarūpe'vagate sati | niyojyo'hamiti hyeṣā satyā buddhiḥ kathaṃ bhavet ||

When one's own nature has thus been understood through scripture and reasoning, how could the notion 'I am one to be commanded [to act]' be true?

Not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; the point is inner freedom, not neglect.

Meaning today and context

Your worth is not the list of things you are told you must do. Duties belong to your roles; who you are is not exhausted by them.

Against the Mīmāṃsā ritualist, who holds that the Self is always one who is commanded to act, Shankaracharya asks how that can stand once the Self is known.

12.19 Shankaracharya

yathā sarvāntaraṃ vyoma vyomno'pyabhyantaro hyaham | nirvikāro'calaḥ śuddho'jaro muktaḥ sadādvayaḥ ||

As space is within everything, I am within even space: changeless, unmoving, pure, unageing, free, ever without a second.

Meaning today and context

Like space that holds every object without being harmed by any, awareness holds every experience. Resting in that can bring steadiness when life feels shaken.

Shankaracharya closes the chapter with a first-person statement of the Self's nature.
