Prakaraṇa 13

13.1 Shankaracharya

acakṣuṣṭvānna dṛṣṭirme tathāśrotrasya kā śrutiḥ | avāktvānna tu vaktiḥ syādamanastvānmatiḥ kutaḥ ||

Since I have no eyes, seeing is not mine; for one without ears, what hearing? Having no speech, speaking cannot be mine; having no mind, how could thinking be?

Meaning today and context

The senses and the mind are instruments; you are the awareness that knows their activity. This is a way of loosening identification, not of ignoring what the senses tell you.

Shankaracharya opens the chapter on 'eyelessness', speaking as the Self: since the Self has no organs, the activities of the organs are not its own.

13.2 Shankaracharya

For one without breath there is no action; with no intellect, there is no knower. So neither knowledge nor ignorance is mine, who am the light of pure consciousness alone.

Meaning today and context

Even 'knowing' and 'not knowing' are states of the mind. Beneath both is the plain light of awareness that never gains or loses anything.

Continuing, Shankaracharya extends the negation to breath, intellect, and even knowledge and ignorance.

13.3 Shankaracharya

nityamuktasya śuddhasya kūṭasthasyāvicālinaḥ | amṛtasyākṣarasyaivamaśarīrasya sarvadā ||

For me, thus ever free, pure, unchanging like an anvil, unmoving, immortal, imperishable, and always bodiless [, there is no hunger or thirst...: continued in the next verse].

Meaning today and context

These words describe what in you does not change through all of life's changes; they invite a steadier sense of who you are.

Shankaracharya lists the Self's attributes; the sentence runs into the next verse.

13.4 Shankaracharya

jighatsā vā pipāsā vā śokamohau jarāmṛtī | na vidyante'śarīratvādvyomavadvyāpino mama ||

Hunger and thirst, grief and delusion, old age and death do not exist for me, for I am bodiless and all-pervading like space.

Not dietary or medical advice: eat, rest and get care for the body. If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and deserves care; if you are thinking about death or self-harm, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The body will hunger, age and die, and the mind will grieve; the verse points to the awareness in which all this is known, as a place of steadiness. It does not mean these needs or feelings should be ignored.

Completing the sentence, Shankaracharya says the bodily and emotional afflictions do not touch the bodiless, all-pervading Self.

13.5 Shankaracharya

asparśatvānna me spṛṣṭirnājihvatvādrasajñatā | nityavijñānarūpasya jñānājñāne na me sadā ||

Having no sense of touch, touching is not mine; having no tongue, tasting is not mine. Being of the nature of eternal knowing, I never have [the mind's] knowledge or ignorance.

Meaning today and context

Pleasant and unpleasant sensations are known, but the knowing is not itself pleasant or unpleasant. That gap gives room to respond rather than react.

Shankaracharya continues negating the senses of the Self: touch and taste.

13.6 Shankaracharya

yā tu syānmānasī vṛttiścākṣuṣkā rūparañjanā | nityamevātmano dṛṣṭyā nityayā dṛśyate hi sā ||

But the mental modification that arises through the eye, coloured by form, is always seen by the Self's eternal seeing.

Meaning today and context

What you see is first a shape in the mind, and that shape is lit by awareness. Images come and go; the seeing remains.

Shankaracharya explains how perception happens: the mind takes the shape of what the eye sees, and the Self's eternal seeing illumines that.

13.7 Shankaracharya

tathānyendriyayuktā yā vṛttayo viṣayāñjanāḥ | smṛtī rāgādirūpā ca kevalāntarmanasyapi ||

Likewise the modifications joined with the other senses, coloured by their objects, and memory, and [states] in the form of desire and the like, even those purely within the mind,

Meaning today and context

Memories, cravings and moods are also events in the mind, as much as sights and sounds. They too are seen, not the seer.

Continuing the sentence, Shankaracharya includes the other senses, memory and emotions.

13.8 Shankaracharya

mānasyastadvadanyasya dṛśyante svapnavṛttayaḥ | draṣṭurdṛṣṭistato nityā śuddhānantā ca kevalā ||

those mental [modifications] are seen [as belonging] to something else, and so are the modifications of dream. Therefore the seeing of the seer is eternal, pure, infinite and alone.

Meaning today and context

Every feeling, memory and dream is witnessed. Knowing you are the witness, not the passing state, can help you get through a hard mood without believing it is permanent.

Completing the sentence, Shankaracharya concludes that all mental states, including dreams, are seen as other, so the seer's seeing is eternal.

13.9 Shankaracharya

anityā sāviśuddheti gṛhyate'trāvivekataḥ | sukhī duḥkhī tathā cāhaṃ dṛśyayopādhibhūtayā ||

Through lack of discrimination it is taken here as non-eternal and impure; and [one thinks] 'I am happy' or 'I am unhappy' through the seen [mind], which is only a limiting adjunct.

Meaning today and context

'I am unhappy' quietly merges you with a state of mind. 'Unhappiness is here' is truer, and leaves room to care for it.

Shankaracharya explains the error: through lack of discrimination the seer's seeing is mistaken for the passing, impure states of the mind.

13.10 Shankaracharya

mūḍhayā mūḍha ityevaṃ śuddhayā śuddha ityapi | manyate sarvaloko'yaṃ yena saṃsāramṛcchati ||

With a dull [mind] one thinks 'I am dull'; with a clear one, 'I am pure': so does this whole world think, and by this it goes into saṃsāra.

Meaning today and context

On a foggy day we decide we are stupid; on a bright day, that we are wise. Neither verdict is about who you are: your worth does not rise and fall with your mental weather.

Continuing, Shankaracharya says that taking on the qualities of the mind is how everyone falls into the cycle of worldly existence.

13.11 Shankaracharya

acakṣuṣṭvādiśāstroktaṃ sabāhyābhyantaraṃ hyajam | nityamuktamihātmānaṃ mumukṣuścetsadā smaret ||

If one seeks liberation, let him always remember the Self here as the scriptures teach it, 'without eyes' and so on: within and without, unborn, ever free.

Meaning today and context

Understanding grows by returning to it again and again. A few moments a day of remembering 'I am the awareness, not the passing states' can change how a hard day feels.

Shankaracharya gives the practice: the seeker should constantly remember the Self as the scriptures describe it.

13.12 Shankaracharya

acakṣuṣṭvādiśāstrācca nendriyāṇi sadā mama | aprāṇo hyamanāḥ śubhra iti cātharvaṇe vacaḥ ||

And from the scripture that speaks of [the Self as] 'eyeless' and so on, the senses are never mine. 'Without breath, without mind, pure': so runs the word of the Atharvaveda.

Meaning today and context

The teaching is not Shankara's invention; he grounds it in the Upanishads. A reader can follow the thread back to the sources.

Shankaracharya cites scripture: the Atharvaveda (the Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad) describes the Self as without breath or mind.

13.13 Shankaracharya

śabdādīnāmabhāvaśca śrūyate mama kāṭhake | aprāṇo hyamanā yasmādavikārī sadā hyaham ||

The absence of sound and the rest in me is also taught in the Kaṭha [Upaniṣad]. Since I am without breath and without mind, I am always changeless.

Meaning today and context

What has no parts to be disturbed cannot be disturbed. The calm sought in hard times is already present beneath the noise.

Shankaracharya cites the Kaṭha Upaniṣad as well, and concludes that the Self is changeless.

13.14 Shankaracharya

vikṣepo nāsti tasmānme na samādhistato mama | vikṣepo vā samādhirvā manasaḥ syādvikāriṇaḥ ||

Therefore there is no distraction in me, and so no samādhi either; distraction or samādhi would belong to the mind, which changes.

Not advice to give up meditation or any practice that helps you; Shankaracharya is speaking of the Self, not dismissing the mind's training.

Meaning today and context

A restless meditation does not make you a failure, and a calm one does not make you better: both are states of the mind. Keep practising, without measuring your worth by how the session went.

Shankaracharya draws a striking conclusion: since the Self has no mind, neither distraction nor meditative absorption belongs to it.

13.15 Shankaracharya

amanaskasya śuddhasya kathaṃ tatsyāddvayaṃ mama | amanastvāvikāritve videhavyāpino mama ||

How could that pair belong to me, who am mindless and pure, since I am without mind and changeless, bodiless and all-pervading?

Meaning today and context

The ups and downs of practice happen in the mind. Who you are is not on that roller-coaster.

Continuing, Shankaracharya repeats why the pair of distraction and absorption cannot touch the Self.

13.16 Shankaracharya

ityetadyāvadajñānaṃ tāvatkāryaṃ mamābhavat | nityamuktasya śuddhasya buddhasya ca sadā mama ||

As long as there was this ignorance, so long was there something for me to do. For me, ever free, pure and always awake,

Meaning today and context

Effort has its place while we are confused; it is a means, not a permanent identity as 'the striver'.

Shankaracharya says that duties of practice belonged to him only while ignorance lasted; the sentence continues into the next verse.

13.17 Shankaracharya

samādhirvāsamādhirvā kāryaṃ vānyatkuto bhavet | māṃ hi dhyātvā ca buddhvā ca manyante kṛtakṛtyatām ||

how could there be samādhi or non-samādhi, or any other thing to be done? For having meditated on me and known me, [people] feel they have done all that was to be done.

'Nothing left to do' is about the inner search, not a reason to give up work, family or care for others.

Meaning today and context

The restless sense of 'not yet enough' ends not by doing more but by knowing what you already are. Life's work goes on; the inner chase can rest.

Completing the sentence, Shankaracharya says that for the one who knows, there is nothing left to accomplish.

13.18 Shankaracharya

ahaṃ brahmāsmi sarvo'smi śuddho buddho'sitaḥ sadā | ajaḥ sarvaga evāhamajaraścāmṛto'kṣayaḥ ||

I am Brahman, I am all, pure, awake, ever unbound; I am unborn, all-pervading, unageing, immortal, undecaying.

Meaning today and context

Said slowly and meant, these words are a way to rest in a wider sense of self than the worried, limited one. They are a contemplation, not a denial of the body's needs.

Shankaracharya states the realisation in the first person, as a contemplation for the seeker.

13.19 Shankaracharya

madanyaḥ sarvabhūteṣu boddhā kaścinna vidyate | karmādhyakṣaśca sākṣī ca cetā nityo'guṇo'dvayaḥ ||

Apart from me, no other knower exists in any being. [I am] the overseer of actions and the witness, consciousness, eternal, without qualities, without a second.

Being 'witness' of actions does not remove responsibility for them in daily life.

Meaning today and context

The same awareness looks out through every face. Seen this way, others are not strangers or rivals, and our own moods are things we witness rather than are.

Shankaracharya describes the Self as the one witness in all beings.

13.20 Shankaracharya

na saccāhaṃ na cāsacca nobhayaṃ kevalaḥ śivaḥ | na me saṃdhyā na rātrirvā nāharvā sarvadā dṛśeḥ ||

I am neither being nor non-being nor both; [I am] alone and auspicious. For me, who am seeing, there is never dawn or dusk, night or day.

Meaning today and context

Awareness has no clock: it is present on the worst night as on the best morning. That can be a quiet anchor when time feels heavy.

Shankaracharya says the Self is beyond the categories of being and non-being, and beyond time.

13.21 Shankaracharya

sarvamūrtiviyuktaṃ yadyathā khaṃ sūkṣmamadvayam | tenāpyasmi vinābhūtaṃ brahmaivāhaṃ tathādvayam ||

That which is free of all forms, like space, subtle and without a second: from even that I am apart. I am Brahman alone, likewise without a second.

Meaning today and context

Every image of the Self, even 'vast space', is still an image. The teaching keeps pointing past our pictures to what is looking.

Shankaracharya refines the space analogy: the Self is subtler even than space.

13.22 Shankaracharya

mamātmāsya ta ātmeti bhedo vyomno yathā bhavet | ekasya suṣibhedena tathā mama vikalpitaḥ ||

'My self, his self, your self': just as distinctions arise in the one space through different hollows, so [such distinctions] are imagined in me.

Meaning today and context

The space in a jar and the space in a room are one space. Seeing others this way softens rivalry and loneliness without erasing anyone's individuality in daily life.

Shankaracharya explains apparent separateness with the image of one space divided by different holes or hollows.

13.23 Shankaracharya

bhedo'bhedastathā caiko nānā ceti vikalpitam | jñeyaṃ jñātā gatirgantā mayyekasminkuto bhavet ||

Difference and non-difference, one and many, are imagined; the known and the knower, going and the goer: how could these be in me, who am one?

Meaning today and context

Even the idea of 'getting somewhere' spiritually assumes a traveller and a distance. The verse invites letting go of that race.

Shankaracharya extends the point: all pairs of distinction are imagined in the one Self.

13.24 Shankaracharya

na me heyaṃ na cādeyamavikārī yato hyaham | sadā muktastathā śuddhaḥ sadā buddho'guṇo'dvayaḥ ||

For me there is nothing to reject and nothing to take, since I am changeless; ever free and pure, ever awake, without qualities, without a second.

Meaning today and context

Much suffering is the constant push to get what we want and get rid of what we don't. Underneath, nothing needs to be added to you or removed for you to be whole.

Shankaracharya says that for the changeless Self there is nothing to reject or to gain.

13.25 Shankaracharya

ityevaṃ sarvadātmānaṃ vidyātsarvaṃ samāhitaḥ | viditvā māṃ svadehasthamṛṣirmukto dhruvo bhavet ||

Thus, with a collected mind, one should know the Self always as all. Having known me as dwelling in his own body, the seer becomes free and steadfast.

Meaning today and context

What is sought is not far away: it is the awareness right here in your own body and life. Knowing that brings a steadiness that does not depend on circumstances.

Shankaracharya sums up the practice and its fruit.

13.26 Shankaracharya

kṛtakṛtyaśca siddhaśca yogī brāhmaṇa eva ca | yadaivaṃ veda tattvārthamanyathā hyātmahā bhavet ||

When one knows the true meaning in this way, he has done what was to be done; he is perfected, a yogi, and a true brāhmaṇa. Otherwise he would be a slayer of the Self.

'Brāhmaṇa' here means one who knows Brahman, by understanding and conduct, never by birth. 'Slayer of the Self' is a metaphor for spiritual neglect, never about ending one's life; if you are thinking of harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416 now.

Spiritual standing is measured by understanding, not by birth or title. 'Slaying the Self' is a strong image for living one's whole life without knowing who one is.

Shankaracharya praises the one who knows this truth, and says that without it one 'slays the Self'.

13.27 Shankaracharya

vedārtho niścito hyeṣa samāsena mayoditaḥ | saṃnyāsibhyaḥ pravaktavyaḥ śāntebhyaḥ śiṣṭabuddhinā ||

This certain meaning of the Veda has been told by me in brief. It should be taught to tranquil renunciants by one whose understanding is disciplined.

'Renunciants' reflects the text's monastic setting; for most people the teaching means inner detachment, not leaving family or work.

Deep teaching is meant for a mind that is ready and calm, and is best passed on by a careful teacher.

Shankaracharya closes the chapter by saying who should receive this teaching.
